VIZ Media Takes Down Mangastream

Hey, let's not link to the good sites :/
I know right? Especially not the Company's online reader, that's the best one.
-
Seems like Mangastream will once again be releasing Jump titles but under a couple of conditions.

It is getting funnier and funnier how more desperate mangastream gets to hold on to their revenue.
-
They just couldn't take it
-
Anyone else curious about what would happen if this was reported to Viz?

Mangastream might actually be forced to learn something from all this, lol.
-
Hahahahahahah!
I thought J-Perview was funny. -
I'm not gonna lie that put a big grin on my face. Scanlation sites sure say the darndest things on Twitter.
-
"Hi. I am Bulge *Bulgaira. y u stoop id scan???!!!? Aye stoop id reeed siyte and take off mia liyyke from Facebuk an stoop id follow twatter. AYE hoe u no aye arm seeeerous. U have bin warn."
-
That's pretty good news. The only group doing hq scans at the moment does a really good job, but they're a bit too slow so I have to actively avoid spoilers for like a week. MS is quick and they're still a thousand times better than Mangapanda or whatever the hell they're called now.

I don't understand the point of this though. Their whole gimmick was that they put out scanlations first, super fast. If they're going to wait 4 hours after somebody else does it what do they have to gain? I guess if they actually put more effort into their translations it makes sense. However, if nothing changes in their translation then this is just trying to keep themselves afloat for no reason.
Also I love how they think that they've been under the radar long enough to get away with this. I'm sure Viz still cares enough to be checking up. They even said that they only kept scans up for a few weeks, and not permanently, was to avoid being targeted. So this is their strategy to avoid that? I would have loved to hear that conversation.
"So Viz got pissed because we're using their copywrited material. I don't get it, we're not like Mangareader that keeps them up permanently. What made us such a good target?"
"Well we were popular for putting up scans quick…."
"GOOD, we'll NOT do that. What else?"
"Uhm, well we tried to not keep the scans up long so we wouldn't get in trouble."
"I've got it! Keep them up for about two and a half days! That way they'll NEVER know we are still using their material."
:wassat:
-
So its effectively a "We'll scan and put it up quickly and take it down before anyone realises and no-one will be any the wiser?"
I can't help but laugh at this either.
Guess Air Gear just doesn't bring in the same numbers. Ha.
-
I'm curious as to how long it will take for this to get the attention of Viz and what mangastream will do then (Since I highly doubt Viz will be fine with mangastream doing this after they already told them to stop)
-
This will end in tears.
-
I'll go email them about it just to see what happens.
But I won't. Someone else would do it for me.Talk about desperate for hits.
-
I kinda want SJ to bring the pain just to see what happens
-
Haven't they learned from the past two or three times that Jump has gone after them?
-
Haven't they learned from the past two or three times that Jump has gone after them?
Hasn't it only been a past one time?
-
I thought there was at least two - one when they stopped archiving the series that they scanned, only keeping up the licensed ones for about a month, and the other when they took those series down entirely. Maybe a third after they tweeted Kubo and make the whole "acquiring chapters before the street date" thing public, though that might be the same thing as the first one that I mentioned.
-
One was when they made a Mangastream iphone app that they were making money off of.
Two was when the Kubo tweet brought down the wrath of Japanese and American publishers, resulting in the shutdown of many larger manga sites, including the crippling of MangaHelpers.
Third was when Viz came after them after launching Jump Alpha, forcing them to host only manga that Viz hasn't licensed.
And a fourth is surely immanent, because they don't fucking learn, lol.
-
If they wanted to do Jump titles so bad, they should just do what Redhawk does and scan the material without hosting it on their site. But of course, that would mean foregoing all that revenue, who cares about doing it for the fans.
-
Well, I think the idea is they're assuming Viz and those guys go after sites with the largest amounts of traffic. And this way they could do high quality scanlations of some of these series without having that risk of being one of those sites or having their scanlations on those sites. Because nobody would be stealing their scans and making mirrors without permission, the aggregator sites would use the first versions that come out done by Mangazone or whomever, because those tend to get the most hits. And they could avoid their stuff being archived that way. Really, I dunno if Viz would go through with legal action or not this way, I don't know much about that ever actually happening. That is, assuming this isn't some sorta weird joke.
Also it still seems like kind of a waste of time to me. I would just use my resources to do other series that are being ignored or aren't licensed rather than being group number 80,000 to scanlate Naruto. If not, do high quality volume scanlations rather than purposefully admitting you're over-scanning something. It comes down to they either just REALLY REALLY wanna scanlate those series and don't know any other way how (join/form another group), or they just want more hits on their site.
-
It's most likely Fairy Tail and Air Gear doesn't get the hits they did when they were hosting the Big 3. So they're doing this to get some of those hits and revenue back. SJ needs to seriously go after them by this point.
-
Meh, I have already moved on so I have no interest in any further Mangastream/SJ drama.
-
LOL oh we need our add revenue back so instead of scanning different series that we may have dropped in the past we are going to put up our old cancelled series.
-
What're they even using that money for?
-
-
-
Me and my friend sent emails to Viz about this ha ha, I wanna see how they will react.
-
I do find it funny that Mangastream has brought ire from both the pro-scanlation and the anti-scanlation communities.
-
Really, I'm just wondering what prevents them from doing things like RHS (Red Hawk Scans) does…
-
@LUFFY#1:

… Why? Does it personally bother you? Why not just let them do it until Viz says something on their own?
-

Their own greed, I imagine.
-

We were just doing it for shits and giggles really.
-
i just noticed that mangastream put the lastest naruto up on there sight and it doesn't appear to be like any of the other versions around?
-
I noticed it too. I thought Viz took down MS….

If you check about a page or two back on this thread Mangastream is doing the Jump titles again with some stupid stipulations.
I look forward to more drama with VIZ.
-
Ah I see okay then
-
I assume people stopped going to mangastream when they stopped providing actual content and their ad revenue dropped 8000%.
So of course they're going to take chances again.

You know when you bring up that point I don't know at this point if the traffic will return in any significant way. Have fans moved on, do they really care as long as they can get their comics somewhere else faster?
-
Well MS was the fastest group and did the best translations … so I guess I'll at least re-read the OP chapters again since the new groups are not that good.
But I doubt there are a lot people who gives a damn about high quality translation -
I know my browser already goes to three other places before mangastream as the suggested location first so… yeah, it's done.
What limitations have they placed on themselves in order to feel justified in what they're doing?
-
i went to mangastream for their J-previews. The readers also very useful
-
Didn't MS have the worst translations? Or at least ones that were inferior to scans that would come out a day later.
-
@RobbyBevard:

Releasing their chapters four hours after other sites do and taking them down 60 hours after they're uploaded.
-
They stopped doing the J-previews :/
That was really handy when it came to looking at series I really didn't want to read (bleach, naruto) and getting early spoilers on Toriko.
-
Releasing their chapters four hours after other sites do and taking them down 60 hours after they're uploaded.
4 hours being nothing when an upload is first thing in the morning and most people don't check this things till the afternoon or at night anyway…. And if someone hasn't read a scan within 3 days of the release they weren't going to anyway. So in effect, not affecting their audience at all aside from backlog.
So basically it's purely about the ad revenue then.
