Okay, crazy theory fun time! This is one I'd been gnawing on before it seemed the joining was imminent: maybe Aladdin gave Jinbe that scar. It could have even happened right after the funeral. Maybe he was upset Jinbe would still work with humans after Otohime's (supposed) assassination by one, how he even wanted to cover it up, and so they had a falling out. He worked under and respected the queen like Jinbe, but he clearly had to take a moment to put aside his anger and help the Celestial Dragon when she asked, and even Arlong asked whether there was some anger pent up in there.
I figured Aladdin should be a bigger part of the story considering how much the flashback spotlighted him, and maybe he and Jinbe, similar in many respects, differed in that he had some resentment he couldn't release and which took over when the queen was killed seemingly by a human, while Jinbe could set it aside for the success of her dream.
Anyway, now that the true killer, Hody, is known, maybe Jinbe wants to find and make amends with him and the other Sun Pirates, tell them that Tiger and Otohime did have it right, and help them find a way to live safe from the Marines.
I could be way off base, but that's crazy theory fun time for ya.
Yay for crazy theories! Anyways, I had the same type of theory but instead of just Aladdiin, I said the whole crew did not like how Jinbe continued to work for humans, especially after the death of their Queen and perhaps caused Jinbe's scar in their fit of rage. And remember Camie did tell Luffy (found here: http://www.manga-access.com/manga/O/One_Piece/chapter/609/7) that there were a lot of detail more to the story that would take too long to explain at the time.
Is it just me or is Luffy not the one to respect somebody's private adventure? I am foreseeing some more Luffy crew mate asking till the Strawhat's leave this arc. I mean, there hasn't even been any underpants stealing yet…

The whole situation was a bit rushed. Next chapter will probably tell us if there's a continuation or not.

Why would anyone want to steal his shorts? Besides, he still has his kimono.
Fairy Tail is a pretty shitty example and I don't recall Lucy EVER having a decent fight. And sea kings can't fight on land, and are so huge that it'd make almost any fight too one sided
Oh come on.Nobody truely believes Shira is gonna join lol. It's just to waste space to get to a thousand pages.
What I mean is:this is shounen
In shounen:fighting=story/character development/plot
Summoning seamonsters= NOT fighting.
This latest chapter has further given evidence to why Shirahoshi will not join. A key appeal to the Shonen genre is the underdog striving over adversity trope and the Straw Hats utilizing an Ancient Weapon from the Void Century would completely destroy that aesthetic hence taking away from the "follow your dreams" inspiration that is basically the foundation for this series. I could easily see Shirahoshi helping out in the closing acts of the series, alongside the countless allies that Luffy has inspired, to show readers that Luffy's charisma and will to believe is more powerful than his physical strength, but for Shirahoshi joining now. Nope.
Why would anyone want to steal his shorts? Besides, he still has his kimono.
Robin actually respects him enough not to… unless you imply that the one doing the ball-grabbing isn't a woman.
And what a character building plot development if the audience is exposed to what is under Jimbe's kimono. I bet people who are annoyed that he is not "goofy enough" would feel pretty envious at that scene.

I don't know if I should laugh or be scared at the very thought of that.
But Franky and Jinbe interacting could be the best thing ever.
No one count Shirahoshi out just yet. It's pretty clear we're about to get a little a lot more detail in regard to her character and possibly her role in the story.

It could be revealed she has a sailor mouth, the ability to cure cancer and to grow a third eye, and she still wouldn't be any more likely to join.

I wonder, did you miss the panel of her having to fly alongside the ship because she was too huge?
Shirahoshi will not join. She needs to stay at FI until the "appointed time" so she can lead the Seakings to carry Noah for whatever goal the prophecy talked about. Likely the world government war that will occur at the end of the series.
I wonder, did you miss the panel of her having to fly alongside the ship because she was too huge?
Why would that panel have changed their minds? I mean, didn't they already know she was too big to fit on the ship from the moment that we saw her? I had assumed that her supporters were pretty much always expecting her to be flying beside the ship.

And for her to wait by the ship whenever the SHs disembark and go on land. Some character development she'll have.
Though I have to ask. What is the appeal of Shirahoshi? Why do people want her to join the crew? I find her extremely annoying, but maybe I'm missing something? Don't get me wrong, she's fine just for the arc, but long term? I really do not like that idea.
I ask because some people are adamant about her joining and get rather defensive when you say she's not.

Her boobs are bigger than the rest of the crew combined.
She's fine as a side character, she would get too anoying as a main character.
But shouldn't people for a more competent and less annoying girl and not just take the first one that comes along? I mean why not put Conis, Chimney, or Keimi in the crew? They are about as useful as Shirahoshi and they'd actually fit on the sunny!

I guess you weren't here when people were insisting on Keimi as the next crewmate for about six months?
Prior to Amazon Lilly giving them Marguerite, and then Hancock to make crazy theories about. (And Perona appeared alongside Zoro in a coverstory, clearly she was joining too.) Madame Shirley got support the week she appeared too. For no real reason other than she looked cool.
Its an endless pattern. If its a cute girl, people support them in spite of all logic saying no. If its a fat "ugly" fishman, people insist its impossible even though the story has flat out said its happening in the near future.

A yes Keimi! I remember "but she has a dream to be a world famous clothes designer!" Yeah that was the best!
I'd honestly take Keimi over Shirahoshi. But I'd would hold out for a proper female character to join. (One that isn't super naive and a cry baby)
I was talking to a rabid Shirahoshi fan, and apparently her character type is a fetish? That's kind of creepy TBH. His justification was that Japan is a perverted society so it is ok… yeah.

Oda would not sacrifice character for fan service.
Oda should make the next crew mate female if only because it will give those poor, creepy people who've been growing more and more desperate for a permanent girl addition to the cast since Water 7 some much needed relief.
Keimi will join because who else is going to make the totally badass coat Luffy -has- to wear to be an awesome pirate like Shanks, Roger and Whitebeard?
Well as awkward and weird and how I can't see how it would all work, I'm game for Shirahoshi joining.
Let her join now, and let Jimbei's OBLIGATION or whatever he was planning be her related, thus he is like "well she is joining, so I guess I can now too"
Then bam we have our 10 crewmates and NO MORE WORRYING ABOUT THIS ANYMORE.
We would then have plenty of males and females, we ve plenty of humans and oddballs, and we would have both a fishman and a mermaid, AND we also have a giant to boot. We basically got every single thing int he manga covered EXCEPT having a Logia. We have Paramecia, we have Zoan. We have a talking animal, a skeleton, a robot. With both Shirahoshi and Jimbei there is really nothing left to "want" They cover our only missing members in we have no mermaids, no fishman or giants.
Sure we have no longarms and whtever else was listed on the slave list, but unless some of them are super unique, they aren't as strange as fishfold in appearance or as unique as a GIANT.
You know it feels like playing an RPG and our party has every race exept one, or every class except one and then as always you finally get it at some point in the game. This is what this would feel like. We finally got a fishman, we finally got a mermaid and we also got a giant as a super added bonus.
Now I don't want to get into how awkward it might be having a giant, a giant mermaid, what her power would do, how overpowered it would be, how weak she would be on land, or any other arguement you guys have waiting. All I'm saying is that I want her and Jimbei to join just for the sole fact of checking off the list of potential crew members
Potential Crew Members
A Giant
A Fishman
A Mermaid
Another Female
Logia
BONUS CRITERIA
Unique fighting style (this is a must fore each of the 5 above)
Crewmate 9
Crewmate 10
You can throw in Dreams, Jobs, Quirks, Gags, ect all you want, but you can't deny that for the most part we have been looking for crewmates that fit one of those criteria to be something NEW in the crew. I mean look at above list, is there really anything we are missing besides those 5 things for the strawhat crew? We have everything else. Humans, animals, paramecias, zoans, undead, robots, and even sentient ships. We have no fishman, or mermaids, we have no giants, and we have no logias. AND seems everyone wants another female, regardless of us having 2 already.
That's my reason for wanting her to join. Would I prefer a normal human giant and a normal sized mermaid? Yea probably, would feel like it would be easier to use them in future arcs, but also be nice to just get this whole new crewmate thing done with and her joining crossing off two things at once, well actually 3 since she is female. And both her and Jimbei each easily check off the Bonus Criteria. Look at how many things get checked off by having just TWO people join. People argue constantly over dreams, gags, quirks, ect and how they aren't established or Oda sometimes adds them later, ect. I say ignore those things now and lets just get the big things checked off that I posted above. I'm sure we all have thought Lets get a giant as a crewmate, lets have a fishman, lets have a mermaid, we need another female, we need a logia, and of course as the title of this topic is 2 more crewmates we have always been looking for 10. If Shirahoshi and Jimbei join EVERYTHING is done but the Logia. And personally I don't see one ever joining, Logias are too powerful.
cnet's translation makes it pretty clear now that he will join later on… Oda probably has something bigger in store later on but so far I don't like the handling.
But maybe it is even better and some doubts will be gone

I'm assuming his obligation or whatever he plans on doing is related to Shirahoshi. Jimbei knows 100% what she is and I feel he will feel the need to do something for her. Whether its protect her until she masters her ability, bring her somewhere safe, or god knows what.
Or the other thing is his sun pirates. What are they doing? Where are they? Why aren't they with Jimbei? Will they protect Shirahoshi? Are they in trouble, is Jimbei still their captain or whats the deal with them. I'm more inclined to say its about Shirahoshi, since couldn't he join the strawhats and deal with the Sun Pirates when they reach them. I mean its obvious that LUffy is head towards Raftel, so good chance that the Sun Pirates are on the way (I assume they in New World), so couldn't Jimbei ask the strawhats to take a detour at some point, or just at some point swim off to take care of personal business. I'm sure Luffy would allow either and I feel Jimbei knows that.
I doubt it is about Shirahoshi… I bet it is his crew maybe we will get the explanation this week
Probably a little bit of both. As I said in chapter topic, Jimbei wants Otohime's ideals to become a reality. He is a smart guy though and realizes that its not him who will do this, but the princess. And based on this current arc, would he not maybe think "i need to keep her alive"
Now if it is both, how does he accomplish both? Will he send someone to give word to Sun Pirates to come to him? Can they come to him? Or will he take shirahoshi with him to be able to protect her while doing his sun pirates obligation?
Just seems so damn easy to fix all problems if they both join. Though again then we have a mermaid basically as strong as Spandam when on land, AND she is a giant to boot. Both kind of hard obsticles to ignore when thinking of her joining.
But as I said above it does check off a lot of things that should please everyone. I mean it should please those who want a female. It should please those who want a mermaid. It should please those who want a Giant. It should please those who want a dream. It should please those who want a unique power. Those are all things that just shirahoshi brings to table. Then Jimbei brings being fishman and ANOTHER unique fighting style.
Oh and Shirahoshi also brings a new story element to the table. I mean before Robin joined the whole story was about finding One Piece. When she joined we then added finding the true history of the world. If Shirahoshi joins then it adds bringing about Otohime's ideals.
Though I can see that being a deal tricky to accomplish being apart of a pirate crew, and not with her people. So that is my main objection to her not joining. Not her size, her weakness, her strength, her crying, her ect. Its the fact that if she were a strawhat, she would be a pirate and not leading her people.
Shirahoshi won't join nor Jinbei's reason will be about her… After his statement I think it has nothing to do with Shirahoshi or with someone currently being at fishmen island
Shirahoshi won't join nor Jinbei's reason will be about her… After his statement I think it has nothing to do with Shirahoshi or with someone currently being at fishmen island
Yea reading it again, I'm sure it doesn't either.
Just feels weird to me that at moment it seems BOTH Luffy and Jimbei are going to just leave fishman island, and trust that Shirahoshi will be fine. They spent soo much effort this arc and attention to keeping her safe. Felt like Luffy was Jimbei during the Marineford war. About as many times as Jimbei said "i'll die for this" Luffy said "don't leave me Shirahoshi cause then I can't protect you"
But maybe the Ryuugen Palace is really a safe place. Is there another way to invade it other than Van Der Decken throwing people in like he did? Cause if not, then she should be safe there.
I'm just not one of those that believe that her power will remain secret, thus expect basically what Amazon Lily would recieve and MORE if Hancock were to have been found out. If Hancock were foudn out, only the WG would retaliate. If Shirahoshi is found out. WG, Pirates, freelancers, vigilantes, maybe even revolutionary army would all be seeing her as a threat or a tool to use.
I just can't believe taht no one knows, considering Deckens entire crew knew. 30,000 humans saw sea kings come and stop the ship. millions of fishfold saw this as well. The whole royal family and its guards seemingly know. Jimbei knows. And who knows who else. Even if Deckens entire crew were thrown in prison, which there was no evidence of that. All it takes is those 30,000 people to even somewhat spread the story of what happened, and then even 1 person in the world able to piece together what it was. Some may say that people think the ancient weapons are things and not people, all it takes is someone to have say a handed down story like decken that knows otherwise. Or lets brng up the gouresei. They killed the Oharan's not because they could find ancient weapons, but because they might learn the true history. Is it not a safe bet to assume they might also know that poseidon was a person and not say a ship?
Am I the only one that thinks Jinbe will still join, and that this is a Brook-like situation. Remember Brook agreed to join, but then he couldn't, he still had things to take care of(Getting his shadow). There is still plenty that Jinbe needs before he joins(Hopefully a stated dream, closure on the Sun Pirates etc.) and I think that this mini-arc with Caribou might intertwine with Jinbe, and clear it up.
