The fact that Japan does not have bluray version of One Piece for their own region is baffling and to be honest a total brain fart on the media people of Japan. I live in the land of high quality Hollywood movie releases on Bluray. To be asked to 'settle' for something in a lower quality is again baffling and brain fartish. It's going to take a supreme effort to buy an HD series in this day and age. Shame on Japan for putting the rest of the worlds One Piece fans in this situation.
Funimation dvd discussion II ( UPDATED 8/4/12, FIRST POST FOR F.A.Q)

-
Well refusing to buy any potential Season 4 releases at all just because it's not in Blu-Ray won't help at all.
-
Oh I'm buying whats available even if it's only on DVD but seriously it really needs to be on Bluray in 2011 and beyond. Why the Japan bs with DVD only needs to be explained. why are the Japanese people only excepting that.
-
Toei wouldn't allow Funi to release Blu-Ray sets before they're released in Japan. It would cause Japanese people to import the Funi DVDs, which is something Toei doesn't want.
-
Yes that is the current situation in Japan. But why? They have goofy harem anime on Bluray from the year before available in japan why is One Piece considered only worth less than that?
The best reason I can come up with is like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings took a really long time to show up on Bluray. Maybe One Piece is held up in such high regard that it warrents such a long time before a bluray release. -

One Piece has an edge over them in that its movies are released in Blu-Ray. If you want my opinion, I think they're planning on remastering episodes 1-206 before they start releasing the series in an HD format.
-
Though it may not matter since it's a movie, we did get Movie 8 on Blu-ray almost a full year before Japan did. So it's not entirely impossible for us to get a Blu-ray of season 4 before Japan. But it's also highly unlikely.
-
how much exatcly will be cut off? since they will be letter boxed or whatever. it would be nice to see how the effect goes with episodes in question 200+ and beyond.either way it is a little troubling if people dont start buying because of the aspect ratio, which could be the final nail in the coffin for this series here.
but nothing has happened yet, so we'll just see
-
Personally I have no problem with the ratio aspect. I mean not even that Japanese fans have access to those widescreens on DVD so why are we different? Toei always seems like to keep people away from the good stuff.

Because we don't take sixty dollars for a three episode disc for a 500+ episode long series, so we're not going to take cropped masters.
-
I really hope we can at least get widescreen masters on DVD (no matter how abysmal the chances may be). I know there is risk of reverse importation, but can't that be reduced if the DVDs are region 1 only? Knowing I'm missing some of the picture will just bug the hell out of me. Don't get me wrong, I have resolved to pick up OP on DVD/BD, but if they're full screen, their priority for purchase will be greatly reduced. With my luck, whenever I buy/settle for one version of a product, a better version comes out shortly after, and I refuse to get shafted on DVD/BD purchases again. If anything, I'm hopeful for eventual BD releases of the OP movies (movies 6,9, and 10 would look so epic).

When it comes to the movies, I have the utmost confidence in a Blu-Ray release as well. The Blu-Rays have been out for at least a year in Japan, so the manditory waiting period has long since ended. In fact, something tells me every last one of them will be a BD/DVD Combo Pack, possibly even a re-release of Movie 8 in the same format.
EDIT: BTW, for those of you in LA attending AX, the Industry Panel is at 6:45 PST on Friday. Don't forget to keep One Piece on their mind in the event it's not mentioned in the panel.

Turns out Sonny Strait is the latest VA to sing the Dragon Soul song, so I put this together to maybe get an idea of what his Sogeking singing will sound like:

Oh no, no, I'll be glad for his improvement when the time comes. But, uh…that was pretty bad.

Because checking to make sure a performer is any good before hearing an upcoming performance of his is totally unreasonable!
See, I can be facetious for no good reason, too!

I wonder if Stephanie Young has been practicing her yelling with tons of emotion voice. Any clips of her doing similar in other shows? Asuming she's not retired or replaced by the time the episode gets released.
Didn't the original Japanese voice for Robin get replaced for a while during the Enies Lobby arc? Nami replaced for a while during Little Garden. Reindeer boy during the water 7 arc. Smoker due to death of actor. And Big head guy due to political PR relations. I don't think anything like that has happend with the English cast yet. -

And for the dub, we had Mike McFarland take over as Helmeppo from Troy Baker. Other than that, no problems.

So again we will find out July 1st when season 4 will get dubbed by Funimaiton?

@Lil:

shut up
-
Nobody ever said Anime Expo was going to announce the next season.
@dirt:
shut up
Or do that.
-
@Lil:
So again we will find out July 1st when season 4 will get dubbed by Funimaiton?
Not necessarily. AnimeExpo is the first (and biggest) of three very large conventions Funimation is doing this July. This means that if Funimation and Toei wanted to save the announcement for a large event, AnimeExpo is a great candidate for that. However, there are two more conventions this month (San Diego Comic Con and Otakon) that are also good candidates for an announcement if Funimation has the license already. The last we heard Funimation wants more but didn't have the license/couldn't say anything (which, considering Funimation is generally open when they decide to drop licenses, such as the recent case with Higurashi, means that they are not intending to drop it) but they definitely wanted more.
This means the only reason we wouldn't get anything else would be if Toei decided to take their ball and go home, which is very unlikely - Funimation doesn't continue series unless they are doing well enough fiscally to justify the further investment (which I'm sure One Piece would be). We also don't know what other things may be holding up the license - there may be talks about the movies, BluRay, additional electronic distribution (i.e. buying episodes through outlets such as iTunes, PSN, Xbox Live, etc.), a spot on the Funimation Channel, or some other detail, and I'm sure these things would take time to hash out.
-
Ok thanks but dixxy you said something about When They Cry anime. Will they release season 2 anytime soon too besides One Piece season 4? Cuz I really wanted to get the 2nd season of that and season 4 of One Piece….thanks
-
They're done with "When They Cry", no more of that series will get licensed.

Well from Funimation anyway. I still hope we can get the other seasons of Higurashi in the states (I so want to get Rei and Kira on BD), maybe from Sentai Filmworks or even Media Blasters.

I haven't gotten that far in the series but I do remember some yelling there.
I would think that things look favorable for One Piece and Funi. I am not too worry about it so I am not going to be stressing too much about AX. Also I be out with friends when the Funi Panel happens. Maybe I hook the phone to Twitter though but not going for it.
-
Claymore can be found in the states on Bluray. I might just swing by Best Buy Today and pick up the entire series.
-
Stephanie young did some yelling as Olivier from FMA:B
SPOILERS FROM FULL METAL ALCHEMIST BROTHERHOOD PART 3
-
So today's July 1st. Did anyone find out anything about Season 4 of One Piece getting dubbed? thanks
-
Yes we found out they dropped the license have a nice day

if we did, this thread wouldn't be that quiet …..
plus the panel doesn't start for another 7 hours
-
Then why did Maron say they dropped the license. Did they drop it or not? Thanks
-
Don`t you think anyone would have mentioned by now?
-
Funimation has a One Piece survey up at the moment. Suggest you take it and get heard.

EDIT: Funi so dropped the series. That is why they are doing a survey about the series….

LOL
It's interesting how this survey came out today, when they have a panel later on tonight
-

I know it sounds weird, but that's what I heard!
! Ok seriously we won't know anything for another 6 hours. I'm sure they're not dropping it but it may take more time for S4 to be obtained from Toei's evil clutches.
-
I think this survey is a good sign for news tonight. I doubt they'd be asking what type of merchandise you'd buy if they planned on dropping it… Really looking forward to tonight. Hopefully they'll say they've licensed through cp9 and have a date for when we'll see them. Hopefully we'll also hear about the 3ds game... Europe got gigant battle today...
-
Jesus i hope they get more. heck ill settle for the crappy masters (as if we or funi had a choice), for now. so long as we can keep the crazy one piece train rolling :)
-
Anybody know if the One Piece Podcast guys are doing live Tweeting from the industry panel tonight?
-
@Gentleman:
Anybody know if the One Piece Podcast guys are doing live Tweeting from the industry panel tonight?
They are for panels right now, so I'm pretty sure they will be then.
-
I just left AX for the day. Since all I care about is One Piece and the game room it is exhausting walking around huddled up with so many people. Gonna miss the panel tonight because of work but will be there the next few days all day.
I am highly optimistic for Season 4 news.
-
Panel starts at 6:45pm Pacific/9:45pm Eastern if anyone is interested. I don't know if I'm allowed to post a live feed or not.
-
I know I'm going to be following the live tweeting at http://twitter.com/onepiecepodcast
If they announce it tonight, I'm going to be sad I wasn't there to celebrate. There's always Otakon.
-
And 11.45am for us Aussies out their xD
-
Well, I've already accepted that it's not going to come, so I'm not getting my hopes up.
-
@Yuugi's:
Well, I've already accepted that it's not going to come, so I'm not getting my hopes up.
I'm only going to be disappointed if they don't announce anything new.
-
While I have my hopes up always for more One Piece, I won't be too sad after all the cons I have looked at news for hoping for more one piece. (I think last years AX was the first one I hoped for news at)
-
i reckon most likey funimation will announce season 4, hence funimation sending out the survey…
