Have to say, Funi is being a bit mean. After all this season 4 mumbo jumbo, now a new release is listed and they won't even tell us what that is. I'm a bit aggravated. I'll be happy once they come out with news, but it feels like they've been toying with the fans for a bit too long.

There isn't really anyone to blame. Retailers come out with early solicitations before an announcement all the time.

But can't they announce that now?

It's not their fault someone jumped the gun. Business' work how business' work.

There are a few possibilities to consider. Judging by its run-time, this collection contains 26 episodes. The biggest possibilities are it being Season 1 (1-26) or Season 4 (206-231). I am leaning toward the former, but this might pave the way for 26 episode sets for Season 4. I REALLY don't want to buy 13 episode sets of those arcs, personally.
-
The Amazon listing for Collection One now has a run time of 650 minutes, but the MSRP still remains as $34.98.

Format: Animated, Color, DVD, NTSC
Language: Japanese
Subtitles: English
Aspect Ratio: 1.33:1
Number of discs: 4
Rated: Unrated
Studio: Funimation
DVD Release Date: July 26, 2011
Run Time: 650 minutesThis is definitely a 26 episode set of older episodes. The ratio is fullscreen, it's double the normal runtime, and there are four discs. Does this put movie speculation to rest now?
-
I have to think the $34.98 MSRP is a mistake, FUNimation never prices they're higher-episode count re-releases that way.

Do you remember how expensive the old DBZ season sets were?
How often are their mistakes in the pricing…and a better point: don't look a gift horse in the mouth. -
@Zach:

Weren't they about 50 bucks?

More pointless stuff for everyone.

Keep in mind the language says Japanese only. These details are bs. I'm assuming it isn't subbed paramount war.
-

This is all I can find, but it seems to have been an MSRP of around the same price:

-
Yeah, the DBZ seasons sets were $50 when they first came out like 3 - 4 years ago. The only place that selling $30 dollars when they came out were Walmart.
-
This is really interesting, in all likelihood its season 1, but how awesome would it be if it were 26 episodes of season 4?
-
Another possibility is that they could only have the 4:3 masters for 207+ and they're trying to negotiate for the 16:9/HD masters (and a possible Blu-ray license) before announcing anything.
I know, I know, overly optimistic.
Unfortunately that's unlikely. North America and Japan share the same region for BluRay discs and they haven't released the TV series in BluRay in Japan yet, so there would be a serious reverse importation issue. North America and Japan share the same region coding (meaning you can play a Japanese BluRay disc on your BluRay player and vice-versa, whereas you can't with DVD) and there hasn't been a BluRay release of the TV series in Japan yet (as far as I know). This would make it VERY tempting for Japanese fans to import the Funimation BluRays, which would be very bad for Toei if they wanted to release a BluRay set. If we were to get One Piece TV on BluRay it would be after a Japanese version has been on the market for a while.

The amazon listing has 650.
Speculate!
-
I hate you for saying that, since we all know it's not gonna happen… :(
-
We can shave off that pesky 1 minute descrepancy by removing 3 or 4 seconds of blank space at the beginning and end of each movie.
-
They wouldnt call it collection '1' if it were all of the movies. Darn.
-
Poop. I think it's really gonna be a re-release of Season 1.
-
I've already pre-ordered S3V5, can't wait to get that soon. I'm not too worried on the status on Season 4 yet; if we don't hear anything by July, then I think we should worry.
-
We all just need to hope this isn't a S.A.V.E releases. Only shows that get that type of release are shows FUNi is finished with.
-
It's priced too high for S.A.V.E. The current site for the program advertises that you can get anything in the line for under $30, and that price is over $30. I think we're safe from that label for now.
-
It's pretty much absolutely likely to be a repackaging of the first half of Season One. There's really no rationalizing otherwise, considering the usual FUNi M.O.
-
I'm not happy about it, though.
Like #1Fan said, here's hoping it isn't a S.A.V.E. release.
-
I only bought season 1 so far…but if they continue w/ these collections I'd buy seasons 2 and 3 at that price!
-
Seriously, guys. It's not a bad thing.
FUNi said they'd re-release the show in bigger sets before, haven't they? They said it like a year or two ago, IIRC.
-
You don't understand Mikey, EVERYTHING spells disaster as far as some people here are concerned.

Well, the situation is bound to happen when FUNimation does't tell their fans anything besides "be patient".
-
Just because some people are going a little overboard with concern to OP's future, doesn't mean it's reasonable to counter it with hyperbole to demean those we disagree with. It is neither a bright and shiny future ahead, nor some Orwellian nightmare world for the franchise. We don't know anything either way, so any real speculation is akin to reading tea leaves, and is ultimately a waste of time.
It would be nice if people wouldn't snipe at each other just for their differing opinions, but this is the internet afterall. I would probably be wise to temper my expectations in that respect.
-
Well…just like Funi said: "be patient". This might prove good news for the future of the series in the west, but for the present state it isn't good news. People expecting Season 4 or movie announcements will have to wait either until the re-releases end, or until they sell like bread early in the release. Which means that we'll probably have to wait a year or two until we get announcements on actual new content on the dub.
-
They wouldnt call it collection '1' if it were all of the movies. Darn.
They would if "Collection 2" is all of the specials.
A large movie set that isn't dubbed is unlikely but still possible, and it wouldn't be a horrible thing if Funimation relesed season 4+ without a dub at a lower price. If the language info isn't correct, the 4kids dub never got a box set…
-
Considering recent interviews with integral cast indicate that no dub work has been done, what are the odds that they'd have the time to dub 3-4 movies in the span of a few months?
-
SMFH…
The very thought of us even CONSIDERING that One Piece would be part of a bargin-bin DVD release... That "Save" crap.
This is some bullshit. How the mighty have fallen, goddamn it One Piece.
You were supposed to be THE NEXT THING. Now look at this... Some people are actually considering that you, one of the biggest shonen series around, can go into a bargin-bin collection.
This is... I just cannot believe this.
-
Good word people, this is simply how FUNimation works. Everything eventually gets re-released in a cheaper package. It's been this way for years now. Stop acting like some religious law has been broken, it's just One Piece.

You know they make their voice actors sign Non-Disclosure Agreements, right?
-
One Piece dub is not a failure in the U.S. there are only 5 other shows I can think of that have had over 200 episodes Englished. Yugioh, Pokemon, Naruto, Naruto Shippuden, and Dragon Ball Z. Have I missed one?

Do all of the seasons of Digimon count? I would imagine that's over 200.
-
Lets all wait until after Voyage 5 hits the street to start speculating about FUNi and their cons.
-
I don't think digimon even made it to 100 eps of Englishness. It just so repetitive that you just think it has more. :) I include Shippuden in that list cause I don't think shippuden fans have the same O whoa is me are they gonna cancel my Naruto Shippuden feeling that were getting here in this forum.

True I heard Lance say so at Otakon.

Just like how the OVA 3 Boxset for Tenchi Muyo has been re-released so many times now. Yet they have the license to release the first two OVAs and their spin-offs. Re-releases are just part of what Funimation does.
-
Ah the good ole days. Back when I bought VHS tapes of Tenchi Muyo in this place known as a record store. I still have them somewhere.
-
Doesn't matter if the episodes are over 200 and it's a lot of episodes, They bought up to episode 205 at once. The problem right now is that the sales aren't the best, and that One Piece is an expensive series to license.
-
Hey Funimation forget trying to licence the next 205 episodes and just licence the next 13 eps. I mean who else out there is trying to outbid you? Is there another company willing to start dubbing the series?
Ouch I wish I hadn't posted this now. It sounds sooooo ignant.
-
When I said movie collection, I meant the first 4 movies. 4 discs. Made sense at the time. There is no way in hell that FUNi could get all 10 One Piece Movies (sans #8) available for us in one complete set. And for such a bargain too.

But we didn't know it had 4 discs at the time, the 4 disc's info came out with the run time. ;)

If FUNimation drops the licences, it wouldn't be because they got outbidded.
