One Piece x Toriko Crossover Special!

That opening is too manly.
-
I can't wait to see the Toriko OP animated! It'll be all sorts of manliness!
-
@Kaba:

Yep, ha ha. I noticed they said this will be the first episode of the series. I am all sorts of confused now.
-
Ugh whats with Komatsus voice?
-
He's shouting nervously.
-
@Yuugi's:
He's shouting nervously.
As you will hear him do many many times throughout this series.
Learn to love it. :getlost:
-
@HiroVoid:
God. The Little East Blue arc doesn't go away! There is no filler in One Piece that is more horrible than that!
What? You don't like Largo?
!
@No:I don't mind filler.
I just hate

After reading the manga I say bring it on ^^
-
Anybody catch the special? How was it?
Any sub groups doing this?
-
I'll just copypasta my blog post on it:
Well, there we go. How should I start on this..? Well, I think I'll start on the visuals.
Even though the animation director was one of One Piece's regulars, the art and style reminded me a lot of Movie 10. It had a similar setting in that both Hungry Island and Merveille were forest-covered islands filled with unique and fierce animals that could give the characters a run for their money. Luffy's was also drawn with highlights just like in that movie, and some of his expressions did look similar, such as when Chopper first got snagged, so I'll have to check and see later on if Movie 10's animation director did any key animating. The scenery itself looked quite nice, and the animation was a bit above-average though none of the fights were as flashy as they could've been.
Plot-wise, well, most of the time crossovers end up having an Excuse Plot, as the main attraction is seeing the two different sets of characters interact, not elaborate plotting. In that sense, this was very much a crossover. There was really little going on. There was no villain to fight, no conflict to be had apart from running into random beasts. How it handled its characters wasn't really anything special either, though. Luffy and Toriko got along almost immediately due to their natures, while the rest of the cast was really only there to provide a means to exposit upon Toriko's basic premise. Sanji's interactions with Komatsu were nothing that we haven't really seen from Sanji's interactions with other cooks before, and despite the fact that Chopper can talk to animals, they didn't really try to do anything interesting with him or Terry. And of course there's the problem of majority of the Straw Hats being left behind, but that's a necessary evil considering that the full Straw Hat crew would dwarf the Toriko contingent.
As for the Toriko characters, they pretty much came off as they did during the chapters that I read, so that's good for consistency, I suppose. I have to say though that I prefer Daisuke Kishio's portrayal of Komatsu in ufotable's OVA over Romi Park's.
This was meant as a fun little diversion, and that's just what it was, a diversion. There's nothing particularly deep here, or anything I really found gripping. It didn't make me want to go out and read Toriko from cover-to-cover, but I'm sure there are people who will see this and be intrigued by this peak into the blue-headed Gourmet Hunter's world and perhaps crave more.
-
Well, that was an interesting review. But, I do agree that this special serves no big purpose other than to whore out Toriko for his own show and getting the Straw Hats involved is a clever marketing tactic.
P.S. Have any groups announced that they will sub the special and the show? I'm amazed that there is no word on this unless FUNimation secretly got simulcast rights.
-
I too am a little annoyed by this. I've been waiting since Saturday for a sub of it.
-
Cross, you don't read Toriko anymore ?
-
I never really read much of it to begin with. I read the first two chapters, watched ufotable's OVA of the first arc, and flipped through some later chapters where Toriko was fighting that clown guy (people say this series will make you hungry, that made me want to throw upβ¦), and that's it.
I've been hearing now though that there were two versions of the crossover, the version I saw only aired the first half, and there's another version with a second half that has more Toriko characters, so I'll have to re-evaluate once I manage to watch the rest, hopefully with subs this time.
-
You don't consider reading more of it ? Because this seres is prety fucking awesome.
Clown guys ? What clown guy ?
Did he have four arms ?
-
I don't remember him having four arms, but he bit Toriko's arm off and puked up a humongous insect.
-
Oh that's Tommyrod. I didn't like him that much.
But did you ever see Grinpatch ?
-
This whole "2 crossovers" thing is just way to confusing for me. At first, all I wanted was a sub. Now I hear that was a longer version, which I want a sub of now; which all I've even been able to find is the 1/2 hr long one (raw of course). Ughβ¦
-
Put short, prefectures with cable problems got a cut down version of 30 minutes, places without problems got the whole hour.
-
That sux. But could you plz clarify for me; there was no Toriko episode 1 last weekend right?
-
No, as far as I know that should have aired a week after the special, but I'm no 100 % certain.
-
The old kai/op slot was taken by the op/toriko special. I guess the full thing didn't air everywhere in japan, as most of the raws are apparently 22 mins.
No ep one last week.
-
Toriko episode 1 is the first half of the crossover.
Episode 2 will air 10th April.

Seriously, Crossword! Give the series another chance. Unlike other manga that gets eventually bogged down with angsty characterizations and conflicts, Toriko learns to handle its conflicts with stride and still have everyone reap the rewards and have a lot of fun in the end. In other words, Shimabukuro wants the series to be fun and let everyone have fun reading it. One Piece and Dragon Ball are the only other big adventure mangas that we know of that can follow in that same vein.
-
Any one know a place to watch this, sub or not.
-
I don't remember him having four arms, but he bit Toriko's arm off and puked up a humongous insect.
To be fair, the fighting scenes aren't exactly what you read to get hungry XD
Those kind of scenes are just manly fighting. -
Toriko is a good series.
-
This post is deleted!
-
The fighting scenes in Toriko are awesome.
-
Is it just me, or did this special just go on way too long.
They could have easily done this story in just a half an hour. -
Any one know a place to watch this, sub or not.
Animearth-Kaen released a sub of this in HD, so I finally got a chance to see this after reading the manga counterpart.
The most interesting thing about it was comparing the two crossovers. The manga shows the new designs of the Strawhat crew, while we get the "classic" design in the anime. The manga appears to take place more within the One Piece universe, whereas, the anime is more clearly Toriko's world, with a lot more detail in explaining what Toriko is doing throughout its adventures.
As for this anime, it was enjoyable and fun, but it is really an introduction to the Toriko universe, with the more well-known One Piece characters being introduced to Toriko and his story (roughly).
Animal/monster fighting takes up a lot of it and it does pay off in a very nice Luffy/Toriko tagteam move, but its hard to take completely serious. I did laugh at quite a few moments, and Toriko did grow on me some, despite is extremely masculine physique and fighting style. I may read this in the future. The art was very clean and attractive, but the animation didn't always keep up with the speed of the action.
Character interaction, the meat and potatoes of any crossover, was good but wasted some potential. Seeing Nami get kidnapped, however, didn't entirely wash
Not exactly a milestone, but an above average crossover nonetheless, and a very basic intro into the Toriko universe. Since this is much more part of the Toriko series than the One Piece series, don't expect Funimation to ever release this, unless they also license Toriko in the future,

Gomu gomu no nail punch
-
The Toriko crossover sure made me hungry.
-
It could've been worse.
Sanji couldn't have been there.
-
I was upset that the other Straw Hats (Zoro, Usopp, Robin, Franky, Brook) didn't get that many parts in the special.
-
Finished my review of the second half. In conclusion, watching an episode of One Piece and an episode of Toriko seperately would've been a better use of one hour.
Yeah, I wasn't too wild about it.

True. I liked the special, but I rather woulda had the flashback episode of One Piece and the premiere episode of Toriko.
-
@Pix:

I didn't hate it, I just thought that that certain script didn't warrant a full hour. If they had done more than just Luffy and Toriko punching and eating things than maybe it would've worked.

I just finished watching the special and in all honesty, it really wasn't that bad. Sure, it focused majorly on whoring out Toriko but at the same time, the Straw Hats weren't left completely behind just to ride on Toriko's coattails as I originally feared. We did get to see some nice action and great looking beasts (LOVED the sponge cake lions!) and the team up with Luffy and Toriko against the giant Cocoala was absolutely awesome! That said, while the manga crossover felt more comedy oriented, the anime focused more on the action and I feel that both versions are worth watching in their own right.
A few nitpicks though. One is obviously Toriko's knife attack serving only to KO the monster instead of beheading it like it was shown in the manga. I have a feeling that this is the same thing we'll see happen to the Garara gator in the upcoming weeks. Second is Coco, Sani, and Rin jumping in at a very awkward moment. I didn't feel that they should've been shown as it will make their official debuts in the anime much less impacting to the viewer. Finally, Toriko's magically regenerating outfit. Oh Toei, have you learned nothing from Fist of the North Star?
-
Just finished watching. Much better than I actually expected it to be. I particularly liked the whole island being a big desert.

This is one thing I'm worried about too. It's the same reason there's always a slight facepalm whenever Zoro cuts somebody, and all you see is people being knocked away.
-
I finished watching the special last night. I didn't hate it, but it wasn't really that good either.
I loved the monster designs, they felt like what would be in a Toriko story.
Otherwise there were a few out of character bits, Nami was made completely useless (c'mon guys, she CAN fight), the entire episode was just whoring out for Toriko (which is the point yes, but they could've done it significantly more subtlely), the Straw Hats were on a boat the entire dang time, Coco Sunny and Rin all showed up out of nowhere for sake of plot convenience, and really the special could've lasted just half an hour.
Still it wasn't a bad special but it really wasn't that great either. I was amused but I don't think I'll watch it again for awhile.
-
I'd love to see what Kaizoku-Fansubs would do for this special. It'd be pretty interesting to see what type of animated text they would use for Toriko's nail punch and Fork & Knife attacks. :)

I'm officially calling that move Toriko's butter knife.

Genius. ^^^^^^^^^^^^

I hope someone subs this.
-
FUNi prolly will since they just licensed the series.
-
The subbed episode by AE-Kaen is 46:04 minutes. Is that the right one or is there a longer version?

It is the right one. There was a shorter version for people who's cable doesn't work that well cuz of the earthquake. But since the commercials have been removed it's 46 mins.
-
I watched it two days ago and I liked it. Sure, Toriko's friends appeared out of nowhere, and sure, the coolest SH Pirates were left on the ship, but I got to see Toriko fighting and that's all I need.
-
Glad to see that you liked it! I think for the purpose of seeing the Straw Hats fighting alongside Toriko is what really makes this special and that is why I like it as well.
By the way, now that FUNimation has licensed Toriko, I'm sure they've also picked up the crossover special as well so we'll be seeing that up on the official One Piece site shortly.
