True, we'll prolly get the flashback as a whole after something major happens in the plot, but it won't be told by anyone, it might be someone "remembering" the events, or we just get it like we got the Noland and Calgara story, with no warning and nobody recalling it.
Chapter 619: "At the Sea Forest" Discussion
-
-
I hoPe the flashback won't go so far back that we see a cute little Jimbe and Arlong.
I'd much rather remember Arlong as hateful and horrible. -
I am way excited now… FOR ADVENTURE! I wish I could just stop checking for new chapters and then, BAM! 30 new chapters at once! But who have that kind of self control anyway? ... Yeah awesome chapter!
-
the Noland and Calgara story, with no warning and nobody recalling it.
Wiper was remembering the talk he had with the Elder, and that triggered the flashback.
-
I think he meant that it came out of nowhere as in a chapter before that, an almost full-volume length flashback was about the last thing anyone would've predicted was coming up. At least I think that's how it was. Compared to say now, where a lot of people seem to expect a flashback next chapter and it seems pretty likely for one to take place, or at EL where it was pretty much a given that we'd see Robin's past at some point.
-
Wiper was remembering the talk he had with the Elder, and that triggered the flashback.
You're right thanx!
-
I think the flash back will be short, but there will be multiples. Jimbei can't go,
"Now let me tell you an hour long story about what when of with Arlong."
While the Palace is being destroyed, the crew is in danger, and an Axe just came from Decken.I think we will get a quick flashback, followed by a longer one.
Yeah because One Piece flashbacks are restricted by real time events. This is a good point, and is in no way completely stupid.
-
…or maybe he didn't mean that >_>
-
Okay, One Piece makes me burst out with laughter quite often, but Jinbe's facefault in this one had me bellowing with a bad case of giggles. Glad my roommate isn't home or it would've woken her up.
The pace seemed a little fast, but I do understand it's necessary with all the stuff that's going on. Ahh, I can't wait to have a flashback!
-
…or maybe he didn't mean that >_>
No you're also right, I did mean that, but when I said "no one recalling it" I honestly didn't remember Wyper doing that until IgorGB pointed that out.
I'll admit I was wrong there.
-
…or maybe he didn't mean that >_>
Haha. But I see your point, and totally agree with you.
-

Do you remember how Chopper's flashback started?
Right as Luffy was about to punch Wapol smack in the face. That's right. Narrators are not necessary.
Or did you think Luffy was actually sitting down with Jinbei and telling his childhood tales with Sabo and Ace while screaming in the forest? -
@Sonic:
Oh man if we're gonna see Fisher Tiger in this flashback it would be awesome, but probably not.
Also, we need more Robin time!
Fingers Crossed For Fisher.
-
Actually, that brings up an interesting question. How much do the SHs know about each other's backgrounds? Many of the flashbacks were pure flashbacks, which differ from this case (where Jinbe is telling them in real time). Is there any indication Zoro's ever explained the reasons for his dream? And did Zoro/Usopp/Sanji ever fill in Luffy on Nami's story, which he skipped out on? For that matter, it's honestly not clear how much of the backstory on Sanji or Chopper was even made clear to the surrounding folk.
Does each new crew member get a binder with all the relevant info?

i thought it was pretty clear that the strawhats don't care about knowing each other's personal histories, it isn't neccessary.
heck, that's why luffy walked away when nami's past was revealed to the others.
he knew that it was none of his business and he wanted to respect nami's personal privacy. -
@MDL:

Er…that's probably a bit too advanced for Luffy.
Still, I think it's a fair point to mention that most of the long flashbacks haven't really happened in a real-time "let me tell you all what happened in the middle of crisis" moment like this.
-

I don't think this has ever been explained. I don't think the rest of the crew know about Sanji or Zoro's history. But for some reason or another they all seem to know about Luffy's connections with Shanks even though he's never said anything about it to them.
Edit: About what I said regarding Shanks, Nami prolly heard Luffy say "this hat is my treasure", "I got this from Shanks" when Buggy pierced the straw hat with his knives. Nami was listening in on that fight wasn't she?
-
I think Nami's past is the only one that other crew members know about, and these other crew members are Sanji and Usopp.
-
They talk to each other about their lives off screen. Its pretty obvious they do stuff on those days at sea where we aren't following them because its inbetween islands and it would just be boring to read about.

Yeah…... I'm sure they do.

See, but it wasn't really needed for the Strawhats to know the info that was in the flashback. The flashback was to inform the reader.
Here, Jimbei is stating something to the Strawhats, and thanking them for stopping Arlong. I think that point I made is relevant. -
Hey speaking of Doujinshi, take a look at the newest Japanese One Piece DVD cover in Japan (and no this is not fake, lolz):

-
It could be true, Luffy is so simple. But what if he realizes the need of it just for the sake of people he loves, after things are explained to him by the smart one like Robin for example.Like we know how he regards Hacchi, Caimie, Jinbe, and now Shirahoshi as dear friend. And he doesn't want their friend's home to be in chaos, never want his friends to get hurt again in the future
So he destroys Fishman Island instead? Where else would they go? Luffy does things like beat up the bad guy and things work themselves out, but here there is no "bad" guy yet. Destroying the island would do what exactly?

Why do I suddenly have the urge to go out and buy a Citrullus lanatus ? :ninja:
-
Meh, I dunno. The chapter was nice but I found the pacing in the forest way too fast. It was like Jimbei meeting Luffy and Shirahoshi, Den meeting Shirahoshi and Luffy, Shirahoshi praying to her mother, Nami and Camie arriving and Jimbei going straight to story time was ALL squashed together. I suppose Oda would make up for it if it were a cliff-notes version of the flashback and not the full thing. Because that wasn't a very good build-up to begin telling the tale of the greatest flashback ever.
-

Yes. I'm sure the anime does a good job at expanding that.
I mean, it wouldn't even count as filler, right? :ninja: -

Maybe if the chapter were 19 pages long, that wouldn't have been a problem. :ninja:
-
@ tatermog: missed that thanks!
Looking at chapter 69 again the way Yosaku says it it does seem like Jimbei might have unleashed Arlong specifically in EB as opposed to "in the seas". Then again there also was no need for yosaku to say "and then he made his way to east blue blah blah".
But did I miss something here was Arlong imprisonned somewhere before that he needed to be released and set free? or is that just a way of speaking?
edit: wait where did yosaku get such inside info anyway? from his bounty hunting? Or was it a 'public' business therefore nothing shady that would dirty the WG's reputation. ok nah no way this deal was public
-
jinbei face is epic in this chapter
-
But did I miss something here was Arlong imprisonned somewhere before that he needed to be released and set free? or is that just a way of speaking?
Nah, it was prolly something like:
Jinbe: "Yeah, you can go to East Blue if ya want".
Arlong: "Ok". -
Last thing I just jumped in without reading anything, but a clam fishman!!!!!!!!!!
I saw that dude too. That guy should totally join the crew.
-
Choppers entire volume long life story and Hiriluk's death (complete with events Chopper wasn't privy to) took place in the middle of Luffy delivering a punch.
We can get a full proper flashback, and the strawhats can get a few sentances, its how it usually works. I don't think any of them have ever actually told their stories to their friends.
And for anybody complaining about the pacing at the end of the chapter… the entire COMEDY of the moment was in the fact that one crazy thing kept appearing after another in the course of a few seconds. It would have just been a boring nonchalant conversation if everyone showed up over the course of half an hour. Do you really want a whole chapter dedicated to everyone arriving one by one while nothing is going on?
-
@Samwize: Lol. I guess it's clear East blue was sacrificed, given to Arlong as a hunting field by the WG (and Jimbei by association as it was for his position) but was it in exchange for Arlong not doing something? Maybe he caused a threathening enough uproar to the WG on Jimbei's decision "to work with humans" that he had to be calmed down with such an offering.
Whatever it is tts gonna be a tough wait to find out drags self on floor
-
Finally read the chapter!
Pretty cool I say, especially the parts with Neptune's kamehameha-like attack and Jimbei's WTF face. lol
-
Ok, I know, that discussion is already over but I just HAVE to get this out of my system.
Blood's not fuckin thicker than water.
What's better?
A maker who disappeared when you were still in mother's tummy and never paid anything for you or never at least ASKED for you, who is bond to you by blood
or
Someone who never cared at all if you're his blood daughter but just fuckin accepted you from the get-go and done literally everything for you and gave up everything and showed you every day that you are loved, but has no blood relation to you?Seriously, fuck blood connections. You don't have to stick with people who don't accept or love you just because they're your blood. You are a free human being with a fuckin mind, go choose and build your own family.
Family is not about DNA. Family is about love. About making a history together. About Friendship. About protecting and caring. And so much more.
Oh, hey, that's one of the themes of this manga/anime I love.
YOU GUYS EVER HEARD OF IT

Personally I'm happy about the quick pacing of this chapter, and not just for the hectic, comedic vibe to it. I was a bit worried that a whole bunch of things might get in the way of Luffy's arrival at the Sea Forest, but Oda just cut straight to the goods after showing us the heavily anticipated events at the Palace. I couldn't have wished for anything more, quite frankly.
-
OMG i just read Bweach Chapter, and compared to OP's this week Chapter, its clearly a F**king Troll !!!

I didn't really find it funny as much as disjointed. I suppose it sits better with a second reading but still. It just felt like Oda was really rushing to start the story. I actually think I'd have preferred the latter, at least it wouldn't have given me such an irritated feeling.
-
Wow, Oda's just speeding along.
Zoro vs Hodi had two options; either Zoro would beat him easy or Hodi would not go down. Interesting to see that it was the latter.
Well, I anticipate the certain-to-come Arlong flashback, that's for sure.

Just for giggles, thought I'd look and see how poorly my memory had served me re: the flashbacks. I'll put it in spoilers so those who aren't interested don't get the wall of text:
! Zoro: begins mid-execution sequence. Never any sense he told anyone else in the crew.
Luffy and Shanks: told pretty thoroughly to Luffy by Buggy, with Nami listening in. This might explain the fact that the crew knows his relationship with Shanks. More likely, it comes from Garp mentioning it during the end sequence of Water 7/Enies Lobby.
Usopp: Usopp Pirate Crew fills in the rest on his relationship with Kaya, but his background with his mother is only in a conversation between Merry and Kaya.
Sanji: much to my surprise, there's no sense that any of this was explained aloud. After the flashback, he mentions his "debt" and that Zeff had eaten his leg to save Sanji, so he needed to protect his restaurant. That seems the most that he gets out, and Luffy barely understands that.
Nami: Nojiko tells Sanji/Usopp/Sleeping Zoro the story, but the actual content/flashback is from Nami, who is remembering while at Bellemere's house. Not clear at all how much is actually passed on to crew.
Chopper: covered already, but flashback is mid-punch. There's a chance Doctorine told Nami some of the material, but that's purely conjecture.
Franky: flashback while he's being shredded by Kalifa. Usopp is in the picture, and he probably gets a clue from the conversation between Lucci and Franky about the troubles he caused, but again, no sign that any information is directly shared.
Robin: flashback starts after trying to tell Spandam the truth of the Buster Call. It seems that none of this is vocalized, since Spandam still doesn't understand how a Buster Call could be a threat to him after the flashback.
Brook: Memory's a little squonky here and don't want to exhaustively re-read Thriller Bark (I hate that arc), but I believe he tells Robin and Franky about Laboon. Actual flashback is, again, given with no sign that any of it is vocalized.
Luffy/Ace/Sabo Snoozefest: Same. Luffy breaks down, Jinbe stands nearby with semi-derp face, then they fight. So, long story short, most of these flashbacks haven't taken place when somebody has said, "hey, let me tell you what happened." The only one that's close is Nami's, and that was still in a roundabout way. Think the guess that we might get a brief flashback/commentary and a fuller one later might be a good one.
-
Surprising that Shirahoshi's been in that tower for a decade, but the bigger surprise was Jimbei being the one that released Arlong into the East Blue.
but…we've known about those two things for a while now.
especially that last one. -

That's a given. Also the B word is not to be spoken in this forum, unless in a context like: "hacchi bleaches his hair".
