Also, Cross Epoch wasn't that good. Keep that in mind.
One Piece x Toriko Crossover Special!
-
-
Cross Epoch felt…empty for some reason. It just felt too much like Toriyama and Oda wanting to show off their own creations next to one another rather than tell a fun story. Plus, after they arrived at Shenron's banquet, the special just...ended?
It wasn't bad per se, it just felt like it could've been a bit more than just a simple showcase of two talents.
-
I want this to be good. I also feel like Toei is just trying to get more Toriko viewers by putting it together with One Piece. But still I'm looking forward to it I guess.
Edit: By the way Jump Heroes Film starts today in Japan!
-

I would say it was bad. It was nice to see the characters together, but aside from that, it was crap. If it had been Bleach and Naruto characters doing a crossover with the same situations, everyone would be making fun of how horrible it was. I suppose you can say in a way it was just fanservice anyway to see two series crossed over though since all it really did was show different characters together in different situations.
-
People are a lot more forgiving when the creators don't suck.
But both Oda and Toriyama are busy men, its not too surprising that they'd only do a one shot. -
One Piece x Toriko Crossover preview:
-
Daz is 1 for 1 so far.
-
Yeah, cause Toriko would so eat something that can talk and say it doesn't want to be eaten.
You guys do remember that whole "thanking the ingredients" shtick right ?
-
I just finished watching that preview. I'm…a little iffy about Toriko's voice. He sounds more heroic here than beastly that his other VO gave him in the JUMP Vomics and the UFO Table JUMP special. It'll probably grow on me though.
And I do see that Daz might be right about Chopper being mistaken for an ingredient.
-
out of curiosity is this all being delayed cause of the earthquake (both the special and the toriko anime) sorry if someone already asked this
-
Can anyone translate what was being said in that video preview? I'm pretty sure the context was to promote the upcoming special for viewers but I also want to know what that robot announcer was saying.
-

They're not delayed. They will air on schedule.

New trailer is up:

^^ Ha! Sweet, thanks for that!
-
XDD The crossover will have a better animation quality than the normal OP Anime, great!
-
The opening theme for Toriko sounds really badass! Now I really can't wait for the anime to air!!!
-
….is that Komatsu's voice? I mean, I knew there'd be a lot of yelling, but I was hoping for something more along the lines of an Ussop-like voice yelling instead of high-pitched ear hurting. Toriko's voice is alright.
-
They are contractualy obligated to use all advances of modern science to increase Komatsu's annoyance to levels at which no man had annoyed before.

I hate it because I actually like Komatsu. Sure, he isn't a brawler, but I never expected him to be. As long as he can cook well, and continue to improve in that, I don't have a problem with him. For the rest of his character, I always took it for the comic relief and laughed at a lot of his expressions and jokes.
But yeah…Toei definitely seemed to go out of their way to go "Hm. Now how can we possibly make this character annoyingly shrill which means he'll be absolutely hilarious. We also have to make sure Toriko look better by comparison with no equal."
-
I'm glad I'm not the only one who was annoyed at Komatsu's voice. Why didn't Toei just get Kappei Yamaguchi to do the voice instead?
-

That would have been perfect, though I think the one it the PV is alright.
-
i actually liked Yamaguchi's voice. hopefully the new one will grow on me otherwise i'll be disappointed
-
Okay.
I heard it now.
Boy that is gonna get SO annoying over the course of the series.
Plus the voice seems feminine too.

Well, he is voiced by Romi Paku after all. You may remember her from such roles like Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist and Atem Yugi from the '98 Yu-Gi-Oh! series.
-
Oh yeah becase whenever Komatsu makes a face, it's a woman's voice I imagine comming out of his pie hole :getlost:
-

Wait, what? Was it Yamaguchi that voiced Komatsu in the OVA? Because that's what this post seems to be implying.

Here's another trailer showing a 15 second preview of the special with a little bit of new footage thrown in. Ignore the spanish subs. -
Hmm while the crossover looks great, im starting to have my doubts on how toei will handle toriko. Its still to early to tell but ive got the feeling that i would have liked it more if the people who made the OVA special worked on the series instead.
-
OVAs always have higher production value than longrunning series do. Even if those exact same people worked on it, they wouldn't be able to make it look any better.

I think he's referring to the voices. I haven't heard the OVA voices myself, but people seemed to have preferred those.
-
He said the people that made the OVA, so I don't think he's talking about voices.

I meant everything overall, better choice for actors, art design all that. I know ova's do have better quality in almost all aspects but i just think some of the decesions for certain things worked better in that take on the series and could be translated well enough into a long running series.
-
UFOtable is the other company that animated Toriko for the JUMP Festa. I'm not sure myself why they didn't want to pursue the license for the TV series but I guess it's possible that they were outbidden by Toei? shrug
-
UFOtable simply can't afford to produce a long-running series. No wonder Shueisha went with Toei.
-
ufotable? When I think of ufotable I think of, uh, um…looks them up Kara no Kyokai and Fate Zero, and uh... Yeah, I haven't heard of them before. No surprise the newest potential cash cow would go to the studio that specialises in them.
-
Toei can also guarantee a timeslot on a good channel. Toei's had the 9-10AM hour on Sundays for years now.
-
Well.
They can also guarantee shity filler children and redefining "covered in blood" as having one streak of curry running down your forehead.
-
ALL major Shonen shows are going to have filler of some kind be it partial or entire episodes. It's not always bad if the stories are well written and contribute in some form to the official canon.
-
I repeat.
The series is being made by Toei.
When was the last time their filler's didn't include annoying kids that serve no purpose but let the viewers mentaly insert themselves into the story.
-
G8?
16 G's to the 8.
-
Because, as every smart people like No Maam knows, all other long-running shonen series not produced by Toei are 100% free of bad fillers and censorship. This is a Toei exclusivity.

God. The Little East Blue arc doesn't go away! There is no filler in One Piece that is more horrible than that!
-

I don't mind filler.
I just hate
-
I liked the Apis arc actually, despite being universally panned. But why the heck are almost all the filler kids female? Does Toei like girls or something?
-
Most of the cast is male, so they probably figure it's best to toss the females a bone.
Not to mention it's easier to cast a female idol of the week (because honestly, they're not going to have the talent to play a girl well, let alone a little boy).
-
There's Rapanui. And the cook whom Sanji taught to make curry on a marine ship.
I liked the Apis arc too, Kaba, but not for Apis. It was just a bit of mindless fun.
What gets me about these kids is that they'll be inserted into the story yet will mostly contribute nothing. Apis was little miss exposition before Chopper got the job with the animals, Yoko was just a burden that got in the way of a fight. That seems to be what most of these kids do. Heck Jiro. He was on a fricken pirate ship halfway across the Grand Line and even into the New World, yet he didn't do squat. He had no talents, and there was no mention of why he's even on board. Now if he was lke Puzzle's little brother I guess it would make more sense.
But realy, this is the same stuff you guys could see in Linkara's review of that Sonic comic he did a while back.
The kids were thrown into the plot just for the sake of being there, and getting captured.
Thing is, Toei has a history of doing this, and in a world as ruthlessly dangerous as Toriko's, having some random kid in the Gourmet World would be horribly jarring.
-
Kids are normally thrown in for the whole "Treasure" symbolism OP normally has(and by that I mean something significant in their lives that is worth protecting, fighting for, or finding for a greater good-Even though it would seem smal/insignificant to many). I suppose it's something that little children can relate too. It's just really overused to a point it becomes predictable.
-
Oh.
The two kids that random Scorpion bloke from Arabasta fillers. Both were boys.
-
@No:

I think their names were Dip and Chip.

I wonder if Toei's history of doing things like this is also in relation to the company's practice of adapting Japanese folk tales?
There's Rapanui. And the cook whom Sanji taught to make curry on a marine ship.
Okay, show of hands. Who craved a curry dish after watching that episode?
