A lot of time has past by since the explosion, yet not much more news on the matter has been released. It's going to be a huge catastrophe for this plant to undergo a meltdown.
9.0 earthquake hits Japan

Donated.
BBC news is telling me that the reactor is unlikely to go into full on meltdown or even release more than a minimum amount of radiation as the walls are simply too heavily reinforced. So that's some relief.
-
Okay, right now in tagesschau (most reliable German news show) they said that there apparently has been a meltdown and there might be something like a second Chernobyl. :/
-
Well crap. That reactor scared the fuck outta me. I hope it doens't go off or something
-
The death toll from the quake is now estimated to be more than 1,700, according to Koyodo News.

That would be horrible. I hope they can fix it before anything bad happens.
Really, after tsunamis and earthquakes this is the last thing people need. -
The Guardian's energy editor, Terry Macalister, writes that"there is no immediate suggestion that Fukushima could turn into a Chernobyl-sized nuclear crisis."

Your most reliable German news show is garbage. There has been no real proof that there has been any meltdown. Assuming there WAS a meltdown, the amount of safety features and containment devices guarantee that it would not even be a fraction of what Chernobyl was. Please stop spreading nuclear alarmist propaganda. People have enough to worry about.

Well, then the Tagesschau sucks and contradicts itself, because on their official website they say that a meltdown is feared, but has not happened yet

I just saw a video. Some news were talking about the Nuclear Plant while showing the video of the burning oil tanks near Tokyo. You can see how retarded the news are.
-
on Belgium news they say it can never become such a big nuclear crisis as Chernobyl
-
Ofc it can't mate. In Chernobyl everything went to hell. Nothing was left behind it. There is no way for something like that to happen in Japan lol
-
Looks like the warnings are getting less severe according to the map on NHK and http://yokosonews.com/live
-
It may be a strange question, but what's there now? I mean in Prypiat. I'm sure people don't live there anymore. It's like an abandoned city?

Yep. Like Cpt.Price in CoD4 said: "It's a ghost town." Radioation is still present and it's dangerous for humans.

hang in there japan, my thoughts are with you.
i was glued to my tv screen yesterday evening watching footage of the water bulldozing through the countryside carrying the remains of a whole fucking town, some of which was on fire.
i could only cover my mouth with my hands as it swallowed up the cars that couldn't outrun it.
and that whirlpool in the ocean was huge @_@the main page in my paper this morning:

Because german media obviously has first hand information available before anyone else. Imo, they are way too quick to deliver such a judgement.
Right now, you can watch a press conference on NHK, where the cabinet chief Edano just stated there was no meltdown (or at least he didn't mention one, just the cause of the explosion).

Yeah, that's good news. If they can control this Fukushima situation, things tend to calm down from here on.

I've just read: some companies offer guided tours of the city. That's crazy…
About the Fukushima reactor: I'm glad they could manage to do something.

What a destruction… I could only hope as many people survived all this as possible.
Damn, seeing all those collapsed buildings... makes me think there are people trapped in there... I hope not... a building can be easily rebuilt... human lives however... -
The explosion is reported by the Japanese PM to be the result of pressure build up and did not damage the reactor. Only the concrete casing was damaged in the explosion. They are going to use ocean water to help cool the reactor farther and expect no risks, though the evacuation radius was expanded to 20KM just in case. Radiation has decreased as of 6:50pm to 70.5 microsievert from a high of 1000 microsievert.

British TV media isn't overly worried about a meltdown, mostly they want to know what was inside the mushroom-explosion cloud from the plant.
Forgive my ignorance but I'm too young to remember the Kobe quake, how long does this scale disastor take to calm? I mean, I realise the rebuilding etc would take months/years, but how long before Japan doesn't need to fear more aftershocks/quakes/tsunamis?

Aftershocks expected to go on for around a month.

Chernobyl was a unique situation; the reactor core was breached by an explosion and vented radioactive material after the heat set the graphite rods on fire. This was entirely because of the fact that it was a 1950s era reactor that had terrible safety protocols even by Soviet standards. For one thing, Soviet/Russian nuclear plants don't have a containment dome, which would have massively reduced the amount of radioactive steam released. As is, the other reactors at the site kept working for years after the Number 4 reactor went up.
Fukushima isn't going to turn into another Chernobyl if for no other reason than it had a containment building though it could still be a very bad situation where the surrounding area gets heavily contaminated.
Apparently, the Earth itself has shifted its axis by about a foot because of the quake and Honshu has moved about eight feet to the east.

Other people allready told you but I wan't to add that we don't have any reliable News show in Germany. They're all garbarge (so is the whole German TV prgramm^^) especially the one's payed by our taxes.
-
Holy fuck, Greg.
That last clip, along with the 10 kilometers clip left my jaw on the floor. I can't begin to imagine what it's going to take to recover from something like that.
-

Amen to that.
And people should really calm down the reactor wasn't damaged and there was no meltdown. Well, it's not like hydrogen is all better though it's highly explosive and exposure to it can induce cell death, cardiac arrest, seizures and so on depending on its compound, but their protective gear should prevent the worst.
-
Anyone here watch/watched Tokyo Magnitude 8.0.
The fictional work, came true
Aftershocks are scary and people will die from it too. -
Hey Greg, nice to hear from you again.
The videos are kinda scary, I don't know what to say, I hope things will be alright for Japan…
Wow a lot has happened and I was gone just for a couple of hours. I hope the nuclear plant situation can be taken under control... When the news of it cooling down arrived yesterday I was glad it was one less thing for them to worry about but things seem to heat up again.
Steven, I know it has been quite a while since this post but I'd like to say a few things if I may:
@Steven:
Maybe someone with a better understanding of earthquakes or Japan, or simply someone with a better brain than me can answer a question. The area I live in is known for getting rocked by this monster shake every 150 years. We're overdue for it by a bit, and I was wondering if scientifically speaking the quake that just occurred could have any influence over it. Sorry if that sounds stupid, but just something that's been discussed around here.
! Usually small earthquakes happen in my country and your question is discussed at almost every news program when it happens so maybe I can repeat what they say to you.
Of course I cannot guarantee it, there's no way, but the situation of "does an earthquake triggers a bigger one that's due" is the same so maybe it's something:
In one theory, it's all about the energy collected/accumulated at the fault line. I don't know how many fault lines go through Japan, but for one of them to affect another, (even though different people sometimes suggest different theories but this is one) they're usually said that they must be connected enough to cause pressure on the other fault line.
For example, a few years ago we had a major earthquake resulting in thousands of death… that fault line was very very close to another one -the one I'm living on- and the question was "would this be a trigger". It was explained that these things may happen every 100-150 years here but if the energy that's collected there is released in small quakes, it may not be as much a big disaster as expected however there may be no way to know if those small quakes are initiators of a bigger one or not.
I don't know how much that helps, but those small quakes hopefully are some relief that the ground is settling. I'm no expert at this and you don't have to take what I say seriously, but that's as far as I know :(Still no news about my grandma. I appreciate those of who have given your condolences. There's little else that can be done. My mom isn't freaking out exactly but I know she is distressed by this and there's nothing I can do. I don't want to give up hope but she lives in Sendai not too far from the ocean, and she's also very old. It's really the not knowing which is the worst. I'm somewhat relieved to hear that others in this thread have confirmed the safety of friends/family though.
I'm so sorry to hear that piratemarimo, you and your family have my utmost condolences. I still hope with all my heart that you somehow hear from her, please try not to give up hope for now, it's only been a day.
-

NTV is even worse…
I pray for all the people involved in or around Fukushima. I hope it doesn't get worse, than it is now. It's already bad enough...
-

What the man said.
Hold on through it man, hold on through.

Well, I said a cpl of pages back that I'd make a sig to try n help them in whatever little way I can. So here it is. Currently it links to redcross.org, so u can choose to donate money, or blood or whatever u can give. But if anyone knows another link that is better, then please let me know and i'll change it.
(feel free to use the sig as well, I can only hope the more it spreads out, the more people clicking it
-
Your sig is awesome!
…...........

To all of you you have relatives and friends there: Stay strong!

It's nice, if only it actualy uses an otherwise horrible joke for a good cause.
Though I do find it a tiny bit awkward.

Just look at BB as a typical troll who laughs at the poor ppl in Japan ( yes the internet is full of those ppl atm ) while WB is you, all the people who donated.

On Fukushima: despite the similarities, BWR type reactor that is installed on Fukushima differs from the RBMK type reactor. Most importantly, BWR doesn't use graphite for moderation, which diminishes the chances for fire, explosions and amounts of active dust. This might turn out to be serious, but the situation resembles Chernobyl in only one way - just like USSR in 86, Japan shares so little information on the matter as possible.
So have faith or something.
It may be a strange question, but what's there now? I mean in Prypiat. I'm sure people don't live there anymore. It's like an abandoned city?
! The town was evacuated and now stands empty and abandoned. However, with time the exclusion zone changes and becomes quite an interesting natural zone, and even sort of attraction for "stalker" tourists.

Well, I only tried to use OP characters to convey the message and by no means am I making a joke or anything. But if people are finding it insensitive / offensive uncomfortable or even slightly disturbed or whatever because of it. I'll gladly and immediately take it down

The studio ?
I didn't see that mentioned yet.
@ Ponx: oh don't mind me, I said I find it only a little bit awkward. I'd leave it to the mods or at least the majority of posters hee to decide on that.

@ Ponx: I find the signature good. No need to take it down IMO

At first it bothered me a little because of the stupid "Blackbeard was there" jokes, but in this form, it's much better. Especially because it has Whitebeard.

Last question about Chernobyl (I know it's off-topic). I read somewhere that people were evacuated days after the incident. Did all of them die because of radiation? -
The latest news from the nuclear plant are not good, I can't find a good source to copy this but I read that one of the workers has been trapped inside the control room and it's not confirmed if he's alive or not yet.

Last question about Chernobyl (I know it's off-topic). I read somewhere that people were evacuated days after the incident. Did all of them die because of radiation?Plants are constantly evolving around Chernobyl, it's quite amazing actually. Plants have - unlike us - little trouble to adjust to higher radioactivity, basically they deliberately decrease their protein production and alter the composition. It causes them to grow smaller overall but it ensures their survival.
Heh, hope that wasn't too off topic.

Ah, I see. I also read that many animals appeared that weren't there before. Nature is strong.

That's bad. I hope they can get him out.
Another big problem… when will it end?
-
I hope that concerns the previously mentioned hydrogen explotion. Kinda looks like it too from the pictures.
@ Havoc : so all that tish tosh about plants becoming grotesquely mutated after a nuclear apocalypse is hogwash ?
