your joking right? otherwise that's not sasuke that's anko…. did you read the chapter?
And yet it is very clearly drawn as Sasuke.
That's supposed to be Anko  ?
What's Anko. This is obviously Sasuke thinking of Naruto's gentle hands.
She got panel time, so she must be Sasuke.

Goddammit Kishi…
There was a time when Anko looked sexy. Hell there was a time when women looked sexy.
@Thousand:

It's sad that drawing underage women is Kishi's forte.
That speaks volumes about him…
At least he gave us Tsunade.

I think the only one who didn't have exaggerated curvature was that Sound Ninja who was sacrificed for one of Orochimaru's Edo Tensei summons.
Reading this chapter and acknowledging that Fairy Tail has surpassed Bleach in sales, I honestly see it surpassing Naruto by 2012 as well.
(I would say 2011, but it's a month away, and I'm not that optimistic).
And honestly, when it does, all mangaka will simply follow Oda's character designs and originality will go to hell.
The worst part of all about that is… Fairy Tail isn't even any good. It just apes a few aspects of OP and has tons and tons of fanservice.
I tried very very hard to like Fairy Tail. Like 200 chapters or so. Meh.
Negima is better by far in terms of story, art, characterization, combat, and it also has ridiculous ammounts of useless fanservice, I don't get why it doesn't do better. (Outside of the magazine it appears in, I guess.)
Naruto is still coasting on the strength of its first 15 or so volumes.

Is this true?
If so, it might explain why Shueisha was willing to go digital in a topic Robby posted a month or two ago. Shueisha is MORTIFIED of becoming the #2 shounen magazinie, especially with the low magazine circulation numbers it has now. I read about the horrors at Shueisha in the period between DB and OP, supposedly Jump's "dark age" lol. Arrogant bastards.
Anyhow…shounen manga usually isn't going to be the most substantial of stories. We're spoiled well with OP, but 99.5% of manga-ka are not Oda.
Kishimoto: From now on, my drawings will have serious and realistic look!
Every character resembles Sasuke and Naruto's mom is basically Naruto in a wig

I assume it's the same reason terrible films like Avatar make billions. People get turned off when their entertainment isn't shallow enough.
On page 10 Kabuto literaly hid anko up his butt…leaves me to remember how most characters store items.
The first page made me think Naruto was trying to take a dump and it was coming out the wrong end, and that explained everything there was to know about his 'new move.'
That's all I got from this chapter (aside from Anko probably becoming Kabutomaru's pawn and becoming totally useless later on).
can anyone give me the link to that picture that shows the comparison of one piece naruto and bleach…. not the one before and after with dbz, the one that shows specific pictures from the mangas
.... we should really have a thread for all the funny pics and gifs people like gecko and gabzilla make... do we have a page like that, I want to show some friends the funny shit that gets made here... or at least ends up here
This?

Basically.
There's also a pic that's popular in the manga section that compares the backgrounds. The gist of it:
One Piece: HOLY SHIT THE DETAIL
Naruto: Good, could use some work
Bleach: BLACK SKY AND WHITE CYLINDERS = BACKGROUND IN KUBO'S MIND

Has Kishi completely forgotten what women look like?
Is this the one?
!
Edit: WTF, ultimate Ninja'd/fail on my part. I looked for this for the past 10 mins without refreshing this page…
I also enjoy the stick figure "then and now" comic with OP, Naruto, Bleach, and DB.
…And I also thought Anko was Sasuke.
The "childhood Trauma" in the comparison chart should be updated with "forced to survive against monsters and murderous pirates, nearly burning to death in a citywide purge of the lower classes, and Brother got (allegedly) Blown up".
Has Kishi completely forgotten what women look like?
Kishi is… decent when he tries... the problem is that he's already clearly started he doesn't care about Naruto anymore, so he half-asses it. Hence the poor level of art and story. That Anko clearly does look like Sasuke.
Maybe if, like Oda, Kishimoto actually was passionate about his work, this wouldn't be so bad. At the very least, Kishi isn't an arrogant prick like Kubo is; he's just burnt out.
Thanks guys both of those were great but the one I wanted was what crossword had, but I'm showing them that one too
and really we need a thread for all the hilarious pics and gifs we use to make fun of things
This?
!
As fun as that comparison is, it really IS out of date since the end of the war and Luffy's flashback.
Sure, we're right back into adventure and it is keeping the happy feel, but yah… out of date just a tad.
@Robo:
This is the best.

The sad part there is though that Kishi just drew the Naruto in the shot, some hapless assistant spent a day or two doing the rest. The same probably applies to Oda. I'm sure he designed the place and might have done the initial establishing shot, or done the bell, trees and clouds or whatever, but that's probably still mostly the assistants.
But yeah, Bleach just looks so incredibly awful in comparison. Does Kubo even HAVE assistants? Because that really is bad.
That said. Oda has some fucking awesome assistants. As impressive as that two page spread of Shandora is, like three page later, the exact same shot is replicated in full in a tiny panel, fully redrawn with a slightly different angle. That's the true insanity.
(I imagine Kishi's assistants have Konohoa is down to a science by this point, as well as random forest.)
Kubo's assistants were brought up in the thread that image was posted in originally. To everyones astonishment, Kubo has 4. We were joking around about it, but it legitimately is baffling that he would need 4 assistants.
They drink his ink.
the only explenation.

One to bring him his coffee, and two to hold up his ego.
One assistant to rule them all, one assistant to find them, one assistant to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. Not sure what the other is for, though.
He's there for the paperwork. Ruling the world is a lot of paperwork.

Actually, if we are to believe the man himself, it's a different case. In his latest interview in the Shark, that he has done together with Matsumoto Tayu - haven't you read it, Rob? - Oda states that he does most of backgrounds himself. Even if he means just the lineart, I think, that's already quite a feat.

The fourth one will Sam.
I can think of one for inking, one for tones, and one for speed lines. I don't know about the last one. Coffee? Beer? Supplying the fashion magazines?

The last one is for supplying blow jobs.

Just what I was about to point out. To what extend this is true, I don't know, but seeing how Oda is constantly talking about hard work, I doubt he is just being cocky here.
I think Oda has certainly deserved the right to be a little cocky.
Then again people freaked out when they thought Oda was taking a shot at Togashi (which was unfounded).
By cocky I meant Oda boasting of stuff he is not doing. I just can't see Oda saying "I do most of the backgrounds by myself" and then in reality his assistants are doing all the hard work.
Then again, you're right: Oda has the right to be as cocky as he wants.
His assistants could never keep up with all the intricate details Oda plants into his panels, honestly 5 heads aren't better than 1, they'd just jumble his thoughts and we'd get something far more Naruto'y than OP.
@Sea:
LOL.
I was actually praising him. With that part of the sentence taken out of it's context it looks like I was shitting him.
I was actually praising him.
Yes you were. What is the matter?
That said. Oda is one fucking awesome motherfucker. As impressive as that two page spread of Shandora is, like three page later, the exact same shot is replicated in full in a tiny panel, fully redrawn with a slightly different angle. That's the true insanity.
Fixed.
I heard that Kubo was an architecture student. LOL.
@Sea:
Yes you were. What is the matter?
Oh, nothing. I thought that LOL was aimed at me for saying "his assistants are doing all the hard work" when it wasn't the complete sentence and. . .
Wathever. I just woke up.
Good morning everyone!
Oh, nothing. I thought that LOL was aimed at me for saying "his assistants are doing all the hard work" when it wasn't the complete sentence and. . .
I was about to say something, but at that point I had not read the interview. Just read it now.
No, I hadn't seen that interview. Well damn Oda. Even more respect for you now man.
I'd be really interested to see what level of detail he goes to on a shot like that before the assistants come in then. Because his usual layouts (that we see anyway) are incredibly messy and rough and unfinished, while some of his more inricate stuff, like the 1000 Sunny layouts in that SBS, are a little rough and unpolished, without aid of ruler and whatnot. Which is the most elaborate pencilling I've seen from him, but of course, that was just SBS bonus material, so… no telling.
Makes sense given the overall consistency. I still say Kishimoto leaves it mostly to the assistants since, at this point, the backgrounds are usually far more detailed and better inked and dynamic than the actual character work and they generally seem more involved than the ammount of effort he's putting towards everything else.
Backgrounds are just, pure and simple, the most time consuming tedious part of drawing a page. It can take a full day to do an elaborate shot, and I just can't see the authors themselves, when on a 7 day schedule, slowing down to do that too often. Hrm.
Suppose it depends on how important the shot is.
Didn't Oda say in the SBS that the assistants do the backgrounds? Like Volume 52 or something…
Didn't Oda say in the SBS that the assistants do the backgrounds? Like Volume 52 or something…
VIZ translation says,
@Oda:
It would be impossible for me to do everything. my staff draws the backgrounds for me. They look at my rough sketches and groundwork, then draw everything up very carefully. My staff is really filled with many great people. The difference with other comics is probably that things like crowds, animals, smoke, clouds, oceans, and anything that "lives and moves" are all drawn by me. When you depend on other people to draw moving things, the presentation becomes a little off sometimes. A little awkward, even. But with this, it's more like something that I refuse to let others do because I'm stubborn.
And for the sake of staying on topic, I miss the time when Haku's ice actually looked like ice (and when they weren't recycled zombies, but that's long been said). Compared to the Demonic Ice Mirrors in part one, his current technique just looks like some half-assed magical barrier thing, with a few geometric shapes and lines here and there.
Well the interview in Color Walk 5 is really recent compared to volume 52 so he probably has been drawing alot more background parts then before since alot of things were going on recent chapters. It would also explain why the Marineford War chapters were shorter than the typical 19 page chapter. He also stated in volume 52 he draws things that move including the ocean. So I would think for the FI arc he's going to be drawing alot more things in the background then he typically does.
Marineford chapters were short because he was making a damn movie at the same time.
And also being a father.
