Chopperrules

Started off way too slow, but ended at a very good pace. The opening 12 scenes were meh (not in the sense of animation, just in laziness), but at least they changed the color of Luffy's jacket. And that's the last one now, so they can't do it again. Best parts were Doflamingo, Whitebeard pwning the giant and the emotional moment between Ace and Garp. I admittedly teared up a little. I didn't for Oars in this episode, because I couldn't help but laugh thinking of the "cracking" noises Ace made that everyone jokes about.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this episode must have covered a little more than a chapter.

Ok episode.

-The Oars part was kinda dragged in my opinion, and Ace's hacking noises did not help.
-Anime Coby is starting to irk me….a bit.
-Akainu's and Doflamingo's voices sure make them sound pretty villainous.
-Whitebeard quaking Ronze = Awesome
-And, Doflamingo's speech could've been better, but it wasn't bad.
-Tsuru "washing" the pirates was funny.
-The Ace-Garp scene was really touching (and hilarious when Luffy ate all the food in the flashback)
-And finally, Luffy and the others landing was nicely done.*

*Garp's reaction killed me; it was too damn funny.

Do we know if this is Mato doing the translating anymore? He deleted his one piece page and hasn't posted here since forever. That kind of gives me the feeling he isn't working on the show anymore.

I'm somewhat sure he is. Dropping the 's-bomb' was his thing when he translated Dragon Ball and as many as we've seen it used in these simulcasted episodes I think it is likely to be him.

Shit is a perfectly acceptable translation for kuso and I use it many times in mine as well. Because kuso literally means feces.

Sure.

This is a children's comic/show, not a riveting depiction of real life drama and hardships. Crap is an acceptable translation for "kuso". Hell, even if they decided to use "Poopy-doo-doo", it would still be an accurate (albeit stupid, but accurate, nonethless) translation for "kuso".

Okay, kid's show it may be, but even Shonen series aren't 100% free of bad language. And more importantly, the target audience for these series in other countries outside of Japan is generally older, so it's fitting for us (the subs aren't being done for the people of Japan, obviously)

So does "shit" "hell" and "damn" really bother you people that much? Those are hardly swears at all IMO. If they were dropping the f-bomb, that would be a different story alltogether.

I don't want f-bombs, but I don't want "Darn you" or "Dag nabbit".

Opening 12 shots are cheap, yes, but in a way it's kinda nice to see it there.

The Oars segment did drag badly. You really had to put yourself in the feeling of Ace's supposedly really really really I mean REALLY great friendship with Oars to make his desperation be as valid as it was portrayed, i.e. you had to FEEL THE MOMENT, MANNNN. Easily fixable with some filler.

Toei has been animating segments between Ace and the 40 Captains in flashbacks that never really happened, and it works within the story. The flashback with Luffy/Ace/Garp was a great touch. We knew that Garp tried hammering it into their skulls, but seeing it gives it that much more mmph.

No, they adapted "Kuso kurae" (lit. "Eat shit") to "Go to hell". Do note that "kuso kurae" is a common expression in Japan that's roughly equivalent to "Go to hell" in the US, so it's kind of a different situation…

I'm not saying crap isn't an acceptable translation, it just depends on the situation. For Sanji's case, for example, while I don't see it out of character for him to drop the s-bomb, I would be fine with crap being used as well. But when people are screaming at each other, I don't get why swearing isn't acceptable by some of you guys.

As been said though, One Piece isn't a depiction of real-life. So there isn't any "need" to copy how people in our world speak when they're mad.

Or rather, it wouldn't matter if they used 'shit' or 'crap' in this scene since they're both the same thing and both get the point of the scene across. It wouldn't be 'copying' Viz if they choose to use 'crap', in other words. It's not like they'll ever use 'poopy' or anything, as that video you posted seems to suggest.

Just because it's not a real life world doesn't mean there shouldn't be a hint of realism in the basis of human nature depicted. The same applies to any anime series, for that matter, unless it's like an anime for 5 year olds, which is different all together.

This whole swearing argument seems kind of arbitrary to me.

The translation should clearly be appropriate to the situation at hand.

eg: Crocodile has just set a plan in motion that will kill thousands of people, so he can stage a coup of Alabasta.

Luffy: 'Oh Croc you sillly-billy'

My favourite Viz "curse" is still Zoro's "You make scoundrels look good" to Croc after he explained his masterplan of creating a civil war and killing millions of people.

People get mad. They curse. That's perfectly fine.

I'd just like to say that it's completely possible to get the exact same message across with just as much emotion and anger behind it without cursing. Which is usually the path most manga translations "try" to take, with varying success.

Besides, in my opinion, if you have to curse, at least be creative about it. The same thing 10 times over gets annoying, realistic or not.

The episode this week was aboslutely perfect! Hardly any moment felt too drawn out to me (maybe some stuff at the beginning, but hardly anything.)

The scene with Whitebeard and Luffy was done amazingly.

Wow, what a great episode this week! Not too much drag, and lots of well done scenes! (Luffy stopping Crocodile, Luffy looking for Ace, Luffy and Whitebeard meeting)

Nice Luffy vs Crocodile flashback they managed to sneak in.

I also found the way Helmeppo and Moria screamed "Mugiwara!" to be hiliarous.

However, Sengoku's seiyuu needs to express anger better. And lots of Bleach VAs in this episode (Ichigo, Tatsuki, Don Kanonji, Shawlong, Kenpachi, Pesche, Ikkaku, and Ginrei).

They are at the top of my list for seiyuus I recognize by voice alone, no matter how good they are at changing it. (For Mr. 3, for example, even though him and Ikkaku sound nothing alike, I hear a little of Ikkaku when Mr. 3 yells or screams.)

However the others are news to me. When I stop and think about it, I realize Tashigi sounds like Tatsuki. As for Whitebeard, well the seiyuu is really good because I didn't notice. Probably because his Ginrui voice sounds so much older and fragile than Whitebeard, lol. And Shawlong was okay, but Doflamingo beats the hell out of him in both character and his seiyuu performance.

This is true. I feel the seiyuu does a good job making both of these characters sound tough in different ways.

Man there is no consistency to their transferring the episodes to Hulu. For the past couple of weeks the latest episode would stay on FUNimation's site till Saturday, but now they're back to moving them in the middle of the week again.

Wish they'd make up their minds so I at least know when to expect to not be able to see the episodes anymore.

Tonight's episode was badass. Especially the Third Gear animation.

Funi name notes: Speed Jiru has been translated as "Jill". If that was Oda's original intention then it doesn't surprise me.
Also, another Viz term with Jango becoming Django (I never understood that).

My exact thoughts during the Gear Third scene were "Looks like somebody watched Strong World before going to work." :p

A fun, great episode. Luffy taking on an entire crowd like that was very well done. If only every episode could look this good, or at least be storyboarded as well.

Hm…..this episode had a really slow, recap start....but picked up pace.

Couple of things:

-Lol, Ivankov mysteriously regenerated the hole in his afro.
-Some art was very...wonky.
-Nice foreshadowing with Squardo.
-The filler with Jango and Fullbody was hiliarous. XD
-"Hina failed!" ftw.
-Toshio Furukawa does NOT sound well on a young Ace. >_>
-Moria's voice makes laugh each time I hear it. Damn though, I wanted to see Jimbei punch him.
-Luffy punching that giant had a Movie 10 feel to it. It was awesome.

Good episode.

Yeah, that is one of those cool happences in anime. Tanaka had to fight herself during Thriller Bark and Masako Nozawa practically talks to and fights herself in most of Dragon Ball.

Started off a little slow, but another solid episode. Not nearly as good as last week, but it worked for me, and the end was much better. Luffy VS Smoker was definitely well done. As was Jinbei VS Moria.
