Chapter 596: "Spectrum" Discussion
-
-
I really wish Oda would quit messing with the fans and just say if people are dead or not like he does with kuina, and now apparently with sabo because he isn't showing the face
It's not like this is some extremely cryptic shit he's doing here
-
I kinda want too see not cyborg adult Franky.
-
Lol, who wrote this?
! Yeah, it really says that. Was it Oda?
-
''In order for you to be the king of pirates, I'm going to become the true king of sniping''
Something about that line fills my heart with excitement -
Franky saved the chapter.
And since it was Kuma who sent them everywhere, I wonder if Heracles could be one of those guys from the Revolutionary Army that are spread through all the world.
-
"BONE TO BE WILD!"
covers face and giggles uncontrollably
-
@Thousand:
…the name of the island Brooke is on is sword mountain island. Foreshadowing of Brooke's power-up perhaps?
… Aohige translated it as Pin-holder Island.
I took classes in Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) when I lived there, and I have these items called "kenzans" that are metal shapes with metal nails sticking up–a small bed of nails if you will--that rest in the bottom of whatever bowl or wide container you use and hold the flowers.
here's a pic of some:
! as you can see they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. I imagine, now that we have this chapter, there's a possibility the word denotes more than just these items, but I thought it'd be useful to see them given the shape of the island and it's mountains, and the way it has been translated (seems to me, once again, Ao-san's is the better translation)…
Are you insinuating a LuffyXNami pairing? If so, I just have to be blunt and say it's not going to happen.
LOL No. Just that her feelings are more complicated than the tough girl image she tries to get by with/project. The only shipping I get into with any enthusiasm is Champe'en Ship-ing. LOL That is, when I bother to campaign. (Note to self, need to get over there more)
@Mingo22:Oda already said there wouldn't be any pairings. Doesn't mean people don't have "feelings" for others. Admiration, Concern, ect.
Exactly, thank you Mingo.
-
I agree that Oda should do "What If" cover pages.
Adult Sabo looked awesome. I guess that's what Luffy, Ace, and Sabo would be doing if they were still in Goa Kingdom. This chapter was awesome.
Franky needs to keep that tiger rug.Btw, did anyone else notice
! On the cover page, on top of the One Piece logo,
It says "Oda-Sensei Is Awesome"
EDIT: OuterSpec beat me to it. -
Yeah, it really says that. Was it Oda?
On the raw, it's the katakana for "One Piece." I guess the scanlator was just trying to take out all the Japanese.
Is Sabo wearing a cravat without any shirt on? I can make out his six-pack. If so, he just gained several badass points.
-
-
Sabo is the hot beast.
He is and was always a hot beast.Lol, who wrote this?
! [qimg]http://a.imageshack.us/img203/4997/odav.jpg[/qimg]Yeah, it really says that. Was it Oda?
I laughed hard at this. How did I not notice it before.
Anyways on the chapter, I agree with the people that say it felt different compared to the last few chapters but only because it focused on the crew instead of all of the side characters. I really liked this chapter. Highlights for mw were the BONE TO BE WILD and Franky becoming a legend throughout the Grand Line bits. The Usopp character development was great as usual. The ending didn't really give much of a cliffhanger but it gave me a heartwarming feeling after seeing the crew becoming stronger just to help Luffy.
-
-
Did anyone else find this chapter a bit 'meh'? I mean, we didn't get all that much extra information.
If it weren't for the cover page, I'd actually be a bit disappointed.
-
This chapter wasn't that exciting but definitely necessary. At first, I was kind of weary of the time skip, but now I can't wait to see how everyone changes! It seems like all the characters will grow emotionally, strengthen their fighting skills, and also improve their individual talents. What a huge power-up! Can't wait!
So far,
Zoro - direction sense (one can only hope!), swordsmanship
Nami - navigating skills and weather knowledge, upgrading weapon
Usopp - self-motivation/confidence, awesome sniping skills, weapon upgrade
Sanji - connecting with his inner-lady (just kidding!), cooking as a means to motivate crew, kicking-fighting style
Chopper - self-sufficiency/harmony as both a beast and man, doctor skills, learning monster mode
Robin - trusting others, learning about void century, getting stronger somehow (training with Dragon?)
Franky - thousand sunny goal, researching technology, cyborg and sunny upgrades
Brook - overcoming loneliness, music fighting abilities, swordsmanshipRandom: It's funny how most of the Strawhats after the Grandline are super weird (skeleton, cyborg, reindeer). I wonder how weird the next crewmate will be.
@Joel:
Hm, Ace seems to have a different tattoo on the cover that only says "ACE" with no
S. This confirms what many of us already thought that theSrefers to Sabo's death.Wow! Good find! I hope this means we'll be seeing a very badass Sabo very soon!
I bet the next chapters will have "What if" covers.
Zoro with Kuina, Nami with her sister and mother….
You get the picture.
That would be awesome!
-
Well it's not really much of a cliffhanger true, but Zoro being the last one left gets me all excited. I wonder if the whole chapter next week is going to be about him or if it'll go back to Luffy again.
-
Pop Green is People!
-
I bet the next chapters will have "What if" covers.
Zoro with Kuina, Nami with her sister and mother….
You get the picture.
Chopper with Hiruluk and Kureha still with Dalton as king.
Non-cyborg Franky with Iceburg as the heads of Galley-La.
Robin still at Ohara with her mother and Saul.
Brook with his crew meeting with Laboon back at the Twin Capes. It's a bit harder to come up with a similar situation with Usopp and Sanji for me though.
-
I knew Brook was going to get music upgrades, thank you Oda.
-
Usopp marrying his girl.
Sanji running the sea restaurant. -
What does the character in the paper that the gorilla in the cover page is holding mean?
I'm not sure what it means but I'm assuming it's a bill that that spiked out on since the gorilla guy is also holding a spatula and a pan in the other hand lol
-
Well then, for all you guys who thought this chapter was boring, i can somewhat understand, but for me, its this type of chapters that makes me enjoy One Piece.
As a fan of Dragon Ball, i love battle scenes, and things blowing up etc. but DB lacked.., make that SEVERILY lacked this kind of chapters.
Oda is great by how he builds up important moments in the story, giving you small hints about things yet to come.
So guys, think of this kind of chapter as the foundations for the EPIC chapters we love.
So, about current events im expecting the time skip will happen before chapter 600, maybe at chapters 598-9, and ch 600 will be the reunion, i can't wait…! -
I hope Robin asks Dragon about Luffy's mother and gets a cool animal cap :)
-
Dude, dude dude dude dude. I just got an idea.
An AMV that combines footage of Brook's action scenes with Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild.Make it so, number 2!
-
Good setup chapter. Everything is coming together nicely. Looking forward to Robin meeting Dragon. Dragon's bound to have some big secrets he's willing to share with her.
Makes sense we'll see Zoro last. He's probably the last Strawhat to get the message and it's meaning will most likely be explained to us then.
-
Any one who thinks the chap is "meh" is simply only skimming the surface.
Lazy!
-
I hope Robin asks Dragon about Luffy's mother and gets a cool animal cap :)
I don't expect it, but it would be interesting if Dragon mentioned her briefly.
I've always wondered if the revolutionary animal caps were some sort of in-joke between Dragon and his dad (or you know, just making fun of him.)
-
I wonder if Dragon has a dragon hat.
-
So the Pirate King, the best swordsman in the world and the king of snipers will be on a single crew? Awesome.
-
hey
very interesting chapter !
thanks aohigue and everyone whom took care of this untill the ep got published
here i come with a silly prediction, but who knows ?
[Insane-Mode]I say, ZORRO = SABO !
We don't know about sabo's hears color.. maybe its him.. I say so, cuz @ The cover page, sabo got a similar head as zorros :D
ROFL.[/Insane-Mode]
-
Very much insane, what with we seeing Zoro on his Island when the Revs stopped there for Dragon and Sabo to come back.
-
so sabo is confirmed not dead now right?
-

I went back and looked at the cover page and now I keep thinking that is zoro…

Sabo was already proven to be alive.
-
@Ako:

I explained it in the spoiler thread, and a couple others repeated it here. It says "treasure credit," like the papers Luffy always left as a kid when they ate and ran.
Gotta love Oda–the man is the master of detail.
-
@Mr.:
Chopper with Hiruluk and Kureha still with Dalton as king.
Non-cyborg Franky with Iceburg as the heads of Galley-La.

Ussop with his mother and father.
Sanji - he is the hardest - possibly Jeff with his leg - but we know little of his history other then he has been in the restuarant most of his life.
It can't be Zoro - Zoro was training at that age at the Dojo when they pulled up with the person they rescued.
-
-
the 45 and 30 degree was funny because his voice actor did the same bit at the last jump fest
-
Really? 16 characters of confusion.
Well, on the day of Sabo's attempted escape, Dragon brings a heavily injured person onto his ship.
-
Sabo was already proven to be alive.
where was this proof?
I realize that the possibility of Sabo being alive is very high but i'm going to be one of those people and just say he's dead because i hope he is dead. Nothing he can do as a character in life will ever has a great of an impact as his "death" did on Luffy and Ace. If he's alive what was the point of that whole Flashback, nothing was lost, there was no real story. He might as well just show up later with Luffy saying "i thought you died" because that would have the same effect as that entire flashback and serve the same purpose. But thats just my crazy opinion…
Also i get it was training intros but it was kinda of annoying. We all know what they went through and they all basically said the same thing "I'm going to get stronger for Luffy" They had their own reason and their own little spin but more or less you could predict each of their speeches so it just felt like going through the motions. I'm also on the "No Time Skip" side, just because. It's also likely but not guaranteed. I always like Oda's takes on what otherwise would be a cliche plot or point of story/character development.
also didn't get the brook joke =/

What brooke joke? The BONE to be wild thing?
@S.C.:Well, on the day of Sabo's attempted escape, Dragon brings a heavily injured person onto his ship.
But doesn't that scene occur when the whole town is on fire? And I find it weird they would say person, if it was a kid then they would've stated they found a heavily injured KID onto his ship.

This post is deleted!

@S.C.:

yea, but everyone was saying he was dead. The author doesn't need to spell everything out to everhyone. It was pretty obvious.
-
2 weeks finally :) Yay Sabo is alive xD
-

I feel the complete opposite - if he died, what the hell was the point in introducing his character? He's not like Bellemere or Kuina or Tom. With those characters, I felt by knowing about them, I finally understood the person having the flashback.
Sabo added nothing to understanding Ace or Luffy. Heck, if it weren't for the Sabo reference as he was dying, there would have been no point for a flashback. We'd already learned enough about Ace - him hating his father, meeting Luffy, swearing brothership, promising to live free. In the flashback itself, besides the "brothership" montage (which could have just been Ace and Luffy,) there were just two moments that really explained Ace and Luffy: Luffy preferring to suffer than to be alone, and Ace refusing to run away. Neither moment included Sabo. Heck, even him dying really do much for anyone, since Ace had more than enough angst as it was, and he was only mentioned once.
Sabo was completely unnecessary for that flashback or our understanding of Ace and Luffy. He was a character in his own right, with a story and a dream unconnected to his brothers. Frankly, introducing him and just having him die would have just been a waste of space; why even bother with him? Even without the Dragon scene, I would have had faith that Oda had plans for him; that scene just confirmed it for me.
He was introduced in flashback rather than just showing up because it 1.) provided foreshadowing, so a random character wouldn't just show up and mention being his older brother - after losing Ace, how many readers would feel gypped? and 2.) provided a transition in Luffy's grief.
But doesn't that scene occur when the whole town is on fire? And I find it weird they would say person, if it was a kid then they would've stated they found a heavily injured KID onto his ship.
It specifically notes that it was the "night of the Tenryuubito's arrival." The Grey Terminal had been burnt before that, and they would have gotten up all of the survivors.
-
I think that Franky's serial is probably the most amusing one of them all…
I have to continue, Brook continues to stink for me, with Nami joining in on that odor. Usopp's better not transform him into some muscle builder, it'd feel absurd.

The whole point of the flashback was to introduce the character instead of him popping in out of nowhere later on in the story without the readers knowing who he is. "Hey I'm Sabo!"
Readers–-> :blink:
Actually, that's just part of the reason for the flashback. We also find out why Ace aspired be a pirate freer than anyone else. Why Luffy aspired to become "stronger and stronger" until he was the greatest pirate in the world (The Pirate King). Why they left to become pirates at the age of 17. That was all partly thanks to Sabo. Why and how Ace found his reason to keep on living was thanks to Sabo and Luffy. And Dadan is introduced. I wouldn't mind if Sabo was alive. It's not like Luffy would lose his dream to become Pirate King if he finds out Sabo is in fact alive. Luffy has his mind set and nothing can change his mind from that.
-
I thought the brief flashbacks continue to provide a very nice touch. Especially Robin's.
This chapter didn't provide any new surprises, but I thought it was great in what it sought out to do: provide character growth and hint at future upgrades that we'll get over the timeskip.
I am really excited to probably spend 10+ pages on what Luffy's training will entail and what the definition of Haki.

Yes, you are correct. That is a type of Hanadome called "Kenzan-dome".
Which is a pin-holder with many pin spikes coming out of the base.If their translator knew a little bit more about Japanese culture, as well as actually noticing the shape of the island, he would have understood the reference.
Instead, he simply translated "Ken" and "san" separately, obviously not getting the joke. -
40 DEGREES!!!!!!!

We should make a petition!
