@Mr.333:

The jacket blurb from last time was about how Oda wishes there were cool animals in the Zodiac like a man-eating rabbit or anaconda-swallowing devil goat. This time around it's just a nonsense follow-up to that…
nothing to do with OP.
How much are the volumes in yen? And whats that equal to in dollars?
They're 400 yen, or about $4.50. But if you're buying them in a store that's not in Japan, you're probably going to pay $6-8.
Thats better than the $10.00 here in america
Today I get some japanese books from Amazon Japan, Vol. 59 too:
Here the cover scan in HQ scan by redon:
Hell yeah, man, way to go! Sorry to ask, but are we also getting the raw scans around the next week or so? I really like having them on my pc XD
I only scan the covers, I don´t now when will be the RAW, sorry.
Thats better than the $10.00 here in america
Eh? I'm talking about America. Or do you mean the Viz volumes?
Okay , I shall go and create a new zodiac for the Church of the Godly Oda , be right back :ninja:
Oh and could we merge the "3.2 mil first print" thread here too ? We prety much talk about one and the same thing .
….........wait do we already have vol 59 SBS or did I miss something ?
@No:

I'd rather not have a thread that degenerated into comparing Bleach and American superhero comic books and arguing which sucks worse into this thread.
Keep that nonsense over there.

Hey, Aohige, you think it'd be good to use this kinda thread to talk about One Piece selling in other countries?

One of the biggest problem with that is, it's really hard to get an actual numerical figure from US and such.
Most of the manga sales figures are reported like "the industry reported 14% increase from last year, bringing the industry sales to $120 million" and other vague nonsense.
US sales figures also tends to avoid actual numbers and prefers to simply "rank" them, without actually reporting ANY numbers for each. (ex: top 10 selling manga ranked in order, etc etc)
Getting the actual print count of each franchise is nigh impossible, unlike Japanese manga which frequently reports both circulation print count as well as sales.
And quite frankly it's extremely negligible. Manga sales outside of Japan is so small, it doesn't really have an impact to the much larger sales figures for high selling franchise. However, same cannot be said for franchise that's niche in Japanese market.
(For example, One Piece sells 2.3~2.4 million per volume and Naruto sales 1.1~1.2 million. Even if OP sold zero outside of Japan, and Naruto sold 100,000 per volume outside of Japan, which is a generous estimate, it's nowhere near enough to bridge the gap)

Yeah, thinking it over, guess you're right. Though it'd be grat if Viz and such released the numbers. Oh well xD

Of course, no problem
@CCC:
The little inside jacket blurb is pretty weird this time around.
"Why am I drinking alone, you might ask? Someone is singing about how if we all imagine world peace then the world will, little by little, become peaceful. Won't you have a drink too? Today is the anniversary of John's death. Oh, I mean John the dog. A dog."
ohh yeah, the Bascoholics later joined him..
but we wanted just to drink.. world peace is okay we guess.:ninja:
I hope you don't mind but Aohige's post makes me want to adress something about international sales :
You know guys , I wonder if I'd even want to get OP in my country . Just seeing what the few fans that are around here (one topic on one forum (which has a design straight out of 2003) plus one almost 100% dead new forum) use for "fishman" - well that gave me a serious Komatsu face reaction . There is a scan group , somewhere around Alabasta , but I fear to look into it to be honest .
And then there's the whole thing that there is little chance the anime would get broadcast at all . The four mainstream channels do not cary anime at all - the last ones I saw on them were the "Princes Mononoke" and "Spirited Away" movies , done prety good , surprisingly , may I add . The last anime series on was digimon , six to four years or more ago .
Yeah .
Yeah Naruto gets broadcast here , but it's on a cable chanell that is very expensive to even get . I'm stil mistified where the fanbase that was here before that decision came from - I do know that while in a café I sometimes go to (due to my conection's "no playing any videos or you shall have an incredibly slow loading of forum pages and all images for the rest of the month" restrictions) , I actualy saw someone was reading Naruto on there on onemanga .
Also couple this with the fact that every other "cult" hit series got covered in the one international comics magazine even published here (Naruto , Alita , that thing with Eden in the title , Neon Genesis Evangelion , you name it) except this series as far as I know , and the fact not one chapter of Dragonball got published here , and most asian releases consist of shojou esque korean manhwa (while the one good one I saw about a murdering priest , half of whose soul is owned by a Rasputin like demon) never got beyond volume 1 and yeah…..a prety bleak outlook whatever the case with me wanting it or not may be .
One of the biggest problem with that is, it's really hard to get an actual numerical figure from US and such.
About the only "hard numbers" you can find are from Diamond This link will give you the numbers from June 2010 (scroll down to the trade paperback section) Here's a few from that list for reference:
Naruto Vol. 48 - 5,199
Bleach Vol. 31 - 2,842
One Piece Vol. 50 - 1,238
One Piece Vol. 51 - 1,236
One Piece Vol. 52 - 1,230
One Piece Vol. 53 - 1,238
Of course these numbers don't account for internet sales, or most big book store (B&N, Borders, etc) sales.
4.50? So I'm paying 10$ extra for being a Canadian?
4.50? So I'm paying 10$ extra for being a Canadian?
But don't you know what great crime thou hast committed by not being part of …ahem* America! (say that with a deep Republican grunt). Apparently the Canadian dollar is worth less than toilet paper in the good ol USofA and your taxes are soooooooo high my god who will protect the poor widdle publishers from your red tory claws :ninja:
Lol I jest, I lived in Canada so I know the pain of buying manga there...I avoided the problem by buying from Right Stuff online
Just curious : any idea about the SBS yet ?
Nope...
Sigh .
So instead of geting names for the Giant Squad we get random brithday dates .
SIGH .
Or the names of the other three pirates features on that spread beside Doma , Squardo and Makugai . Ya know , helmet guy , jester guy and horse face .
Why was none of that answered ?
And for that matter wouldn't a databook any time soon be a good idea ? I mean when was the last one ?

get with the times your dollar is doing so poorly that the Canadian dollar is almost at par actually worth more than the greenback a few times this year and last, hence our gripe of why we get ripped of still paying the same amount as when our dollar was worth ~$0.75 :)
L-O-L this volume beat Naruto by over a MILLION !
Holy crap , Jump must realy love Oda's obsesive compulsive expanding of the manga with new plots . Unlike with Toriyama .
Oh and I will say it again : shit SBS is shit .
@No:
L-O-L this volume beat Naruto by over a MILLION !
…...... as usual.
Naruto barely gets to million copies, as far as I remember. Not to mention Bleach, that has even less sales.
Worldwide, Naruto destroys One Piece, though. Foreigners are retarded.
Awesome, as expected from One Piece.
Worldwide, Naruto destroys One Piece, though. Foreigners are retarded.
wut?
is this true?
ok… but 1.8 million in the first week is a new record is it?
@iSheep:
Yes, sadly, it is.
No, it isn't, the advantage of millions in Japan can't beat the advantage of thousands in usa, nor the advantage of hundreds in europe.
max is correct.
The oversea sales of manga in general is so low, no matter how much popularity Naruto gets, it's nowhere enough to bridge the gap with OP.
Even if Naruto sold 100,000 outside of Japan (which it doesn't) it just makes OP "only" 900,000 more in the lead instead of a million.

Other way around. Manga is more popular in Europe than it is in the USA.

Yes, also one piece is more popular in europe, then the gap between naruto and one piece is lower.
owh… good to hear that... i hope oda can continuously write his manga freely.. without interruption/idea from his editor or superior..
It's been a long time since I bought Japanese volumes so I'm curious what the best source is these days.
I used to rely on Sasuga but I learned they closed down.

For 2009 Naruto sold 250 000 per volume in France alone. That's 6 volumes a year so 1.5 million Naruto volumes for the entire year.
80 000 for One Piece. Around 390 000 a year.
Fairy Tail is second behind Naruto with about 420 000 a year followed by Soul Eater which is about the same as One Piece.

Actually, that's why I look for SBS each volume
So thanks for the trans o/

France is the second biggest market for manga after Japan. Americas manga market is much smaller compared to France
ONE PIECE VOL. 59 RAW MQ
Yes, also one piece is more popular in europe, then the gap between naruto and one piece is lower.
This really depends on the country. In Italy OP is more popular, in Germany Naruto is a bit more popular and in France Naruto is a lot more popular. France has the biggest non-Asian manga market in the world though, so OP's sales might still be higher than Naruto's sales in the USA.
In Sweden, everything but One Piece, Naruto and Detective Conan crashed and ceased publication mid-story. :S
In my country none of that , or any other mangas , get published , at all .
Just bishie manhwas . With bishie characters and lame art .
The on interesting thing , about a possesed priest hunting down demons , never got past the first volume .

Thanks for the correction Connard, I had no idea France's manga market was that huge.
US manga sales are nowhere near those numbers, judging from the very few stats even available.
ONE PIECE VOL. 59 RAW MQ
Thanks a hell lot, Redon!
In Spain the most sold is Naruto, Bleach and then One Piece and Fairy Tail (apart of special editions like a re-edited Slum Dunk or Dr. Slump), but editors don't publish the number of volumes
