That, in all honesty, was probably the greatest thing I've ever seen.

GINYU FORCE RULES. GINYU FORCE RULES.
that was hilarious
-
ok, Translation of Tokusentai was awesome. "Ginyu Force Rules" is pretty funny and fits with the corniness of the original song.
Let's see if I can find another clip of the Ginyu Special Corps and see how their dub voices are this time…
Oh, here we go.

My only theory: with all of the MMPR series being filmed in and around Australia (and even having "Australian" Catherine in one series), Jeese has gone from a stereotype to a token.
Just think of Jeese as a male Cat and you'll be fine. (wait, what am I saying?)

Why the freak out? It's not like he appears much. He'll be gone after Goku fights Ginyu. Plus it's only 1 voice they got wrong.
-
Ginyu Force Rules~
That was awesome. XD
I've noticed that some of them have new voice actors too.

The clips for next week's episode are up.

http://nicktoons.nick.com/videos/clip/dragon-ball-z-kai-first-up-for-ginyu-force-guldos-time-freeze-clip-3.htmlThey somehow skipped a second clip. A little peeved that Jheese kept the Australian accent (makes no sense since he's an alien), but I'm fine with the rest of the voices. I was a bit skeptical that Chris Sabat was reprising his role as Reacoom, but after hearing how he's not going the dumb meat-head route, I'm fine with it.
Also seems like having Vic do Buttah's voice makes him sound like his original '96 dub voice.

They also fucked up Goku and Kaio.

I admit Kaio's voice sucks but I don't have a problem with Goku's.

WOW! The footage for the Ginyu Squad in kai look so new! I mean it could pass for a series animated in the early 00's!

Eh, it's way toned down. Yeah, he has an accent, but it's not as annoying and in-your-face about it. I can live with it.
-
When Goku was holding Raditz in the beginning of Dragonball Z so Piccolo could hit Raditz with the Special Beam Canon, why couldn't Raditz just fly to dodge the beam?
-

An accent is an accent. Sabat's Jeice was (most likely untentionally) hilariously bad, this Jeice is just bad.
-
Yeah!
OIM JAICE!
-
When Goku was holding Raditz in the beginning of Dragonball Z so Piccolo could hit Raditz with the Special Beam Canon, why couldn't Raditz just fly to dodge the beam?
Because a toddler headbutted him in the stomach what it makes perfect sense.
! I'm actually liking the new Ginyu voices. Guldo's speech and dialogue was pleasant to listen to before he died, especially since the character is supposed to be a slimy, annoying little weirdo. I don't really mind Jeice, when I hear him I don't think "aussie," I think "rock star." Of course, I've never heard the original voices, but still I just find this dub really pleasant to listen to. The dialogue is surprisingly clever considering the content, and the actors are all giving good performances.

DBZ Abridged made fun of this, with Raditz's last words being "DAMN YOU HINDSIGHT!"
Though it's basically because he was too wounded to actually move properly. If he could fly, he would've been able to get Goku off him without problem before.

Just out of interest sake, how did viz handle DB? I heard they changed some guns into laser guns and removed some middle fingers, but what is the actual translation like?
-
I'm reading the Piccolo Daimao Arc, and… Piccolo Senior can spit out monsters? Can all Namekians do that? I know that Piccolo Daimao spits out Piccolo Junior later, but can all Namekians spit out those monsters?
-

I've only read one volume of Viz's translation of the original Dragon Ball, and I was amused that they actually called Commander Blue gay several times. I'm really surprised to hear that they didn't change that in later editions, since I can't imagine Viz ever pulling something off like that these days.
-

Namekians spit out eggs with Namekians, but Daimao was a demon, so he spits out demons.

Even some of the japanese voice actors had regional accents, and for that matter, spoke the common language to begin with. If you're going to call foul on characters having accents despite being space aliens, you have to call out both versions for it.

Depends on which edition you get. They're all pretty well translated. Some editions are totally unedited… and others aren't. There's been quite a few variants over the years.
-

It makes no less sense than aliens speaking English/Japanese in the first place. It's perfectly logical that whatever planet Jheese comes from might have an accent that sounds like our world's "Australian". Mind you, I don't like the accent either, but it's just because it annoys me, not because he's an alien.
-
Namekians spit out eggs with Namekians, but Daimao was a demon, so he spits out demons.
Oh, okay. So Piccolo Daimao is no Namekian?
-
Oh, okay. So Piccolo Daimao is no Namekian?
Kami was a Namekian who wanted to take the role of Earth's God. But he had evil in his heart and so could not.
He split himself in two, the good half, and the evil Piccollo half, which was pure demonic.
This is why the two were linked later, where if one would die, both would die.
When Piccollo Daimao was dying, he passed on all his essance to Piccollo Jr., which kept the connection… somehow, but wasn't as purely evil.
Much later in the Cell saga Piccollo Jr. and Kami fused to become whole again. And Nail was in there somewhere too.
-
It should be noted that during the whole Daimao arc, neither Kami nor Piccolo were regarded as aliens. They were thought of as demons. Toriyama decided to make them into aliens as a twist during the Saiyan arc.
Before anyone says it was something planned out in advance, should point out that Toriyama never really did plot anything out in advance. He generally just ran with the story as he did everything.
As for the accents for the Japanese voices, the most noticeable ones were Goku's, Chi-Chi's and Yajirobe's. All of these had a rough, mountain-hick sounding accents all based on the fact that they lived away from civilization and it was present from the way they spoke. Yeah, it doesn't exactly make sense for them to have accents from our Earth, but it's not like we heard anyone saying terms like "wanker" or "mate." At least those three are from Earth. :P But either way, it's not a big deal. As I said, just a little peeved. S'all. Not really lettin' it bother me. I'm just glad Reacoom isn't a meat-headed moron and Freeza isn't spouting the most god awful puns and gay sexual innuendo.

Kami was never depicted or stated to be a demon. Which would make zero sense anyway.
Also if he didn't plan anything ahead would you mind explaining the part in the 23rd Budokai where Kami and Piccolo argue in Namekian?
-
Toriyama may have made it up mostly as he went along, and forgotten his backstory along the way, but he definitley planned ahead at least a little bit too. There's enough cases of foreshadowing here and there to show that.
I'm pretty sure Raditz not only mentioned there'd be 2 more Saiyins after him, but also teased at a world conquering group they worked for, which would of course be Frieza. (And Kaio hinted at him well before Vegeta was beaten) And Frieza touted all four of his forms while still in his second.
Super Saiyin was dropped way in advance. From the second Goku faced Recoom, Vegeta started talking about it, and Goku wouldn't go blonde for a while. Ditto Gohan's hidden potential… tho that went so many years, arcs and was such a recurring point I'm not sure how much it really counts, that was more an ongoing thread that took forever to really pay off.
Planning on the scale that Oda does with centuries of backstory and a recurring cast of thousands that all fill a role? Not even close. But enough to have some idea of what the next villain and arc is going to be and start dropping hints before the current one is done.
-
The whole bit with Gohan was more of a fluke honestly. I doubt even Toriyama knew when he introduced his anger power with Raditz that it would be the key to stopping a villain in an arc he would create post-Frieza. Yeah he kept using it a few times (notably also against Frieza after Krillin's supposed death when he was impaled), but it's not like he specifically thought it would come to end up being the key to defeating someone like Cell.
As for Piccolo/Kami…I think somewhere in the back of his mind he figured they were aliens but didn't specifically work out how or why, particularly with the whole scene at the Budokai. He ultimately did retcon a few things though to make it make sense.
-
Vegeta mentions Super Saiyans as he and Nappa leave for Earth, too.
-
Well, Frieza's "ball-caressing" scene was on tonight. Thankfully Funi handled it much better.
-

Who said it was Namekian back then? Never heard of demonic tongue? :P
@Yuugi's:
Vegeta mentions Super Saiyans as he and Nappa leave for Earth, too.
Not exactly the same kind later shown. More in reference to super powered half-breeds outdoing them rather than the Super Saiyan form itself.
-
So yeah, I was watchin' Kai earlier. It was the Captain Ginyu episode were he steals Goku's body. As me and my bro were watching, my bro asked me a question that stumped me. If Ginyu likes to steal peoples bodies, was the purple horned alien body his original body or has he had different bodies throughout his life?
-
I always figured the implication was that Captain Ginyu had been body snatching for long periods of time. This is sort of confirmed in that if you really think about it, for him to know how his power works and for him to jump at the opportunity of being Goku, he would have to have been familiar with the concept of snatching bodies.
Especially since in his work as the leader of an evil sentai team, he surely would have come across more suitable, stronger forms.
I always figured the "original" Captain Ginyuu was something weak, like a sentient jelly. But that's just imagination at work.
-
Who said it was Namekian back then? Never heard of demonic tongue? :P
No, actually I haven't.
Piccolo even spoke in some wierd language while doing magic as Daimou, but it was completely different then the way they talked in the tournament. This was literally less then two volumes before the Saiyens showed up. Saying it's implausible that Toriyama was thinking about alien origins by then is silly.
-
On the subject of Toriyama and pre-sci-fi/alien Dragonball, I always really disliked the turn the series took. It essentially went from a gag/adventure series to what would define, or cement, every major cliche in the "Fighting" genre. The wacky Saiyan/alien/sci-fi Dragonball was never really my thing.
-
Dragonball was already what one could call a "fighting manga" long before Raditz showed up. I'm kinda surprised people act like the whole comic was just wackyness and panty jokes before Raditz (Not calling anyone here out).
-
Yes it was. But during the events that would be animated as DBZ, the style and genre of everything would grow to be distinct enough that early and later Dragonball feel as very separate entities. By the time Namek is over (and especially the Cell saga), there are only semblances of Dragonball in the era of the first shown World Tournament (I… forget what its proper title was in English. The budokai).
Edit: Oh, I wasn't aware that this subject was actually being debated. I only read this page before posting. I sort of feel like I just stepped into something I didn't want to.
-
Looking back, Tao Pai Pai made DB history.
Think about it. He was the first bad guy who was both physically comparable to Goku (Pilaf, Commader Red) and not played for laughs largely (General Blue).
-
I remember how intimidating Tao was and how impressive his feats were at the time. It was so cool. Especially in how he would tear down tree trunks and ride them through the air as his transportation choice. Then the way he took a bath and it was revealed that the water was hot enough to boil an egg.
There were a lot of great touches to hype him up as a powerful foe.
-
I was rewatching a few episodes of the end of the Red Ribbon Army saga and it got me thinking. I know Toriyama wanted to end the manga with Frieza but when it came to the Androids/Artificial Humans, wouldn't it have been better to have General White be the one behind them? The last we saw of him, he was sent flying out of his tower by #8 so it's not hard to keep him alive if Toriyama wanted to. He was the only general without a concrete death and he already had a connection with the Artificial Humans since #8 was in his tower. I don't think Gero was even mentioned durng the actual Red Ribbon Army saga.
I also prefer the first half of the Dragonball story. As a kid, I didn't mind it but looking back, the Namekian Dragonballs to bring people back more than once and even the Earth was a bit much.
-
I love the Saiyen and Namek arcs, they retain enough of the original spirit and fun for me. And the transition from the 23rd Budokai is very smooth.
It's the Cell stuff that crashes and burns, that whole storyline is so fucking humorless and without spark.

Cell is a pretty stupid villain to begin with, but that arc being played dead serious makes him ten times more ridiculous.
IM A SCIENCE MONSTER WHO GROWS INTO A MAN THING IF I….SUCK UP TWO ROBOT TEENAGERS WITH MY TAIL VAGINA, ALL SO I CAN....BE STRONG AND DESTROY EARTH OR SOMETHING
Like what the fuck kind of project is he.
And why can a doctor make artificial life that's stronger then people like Freeza and Super Saiyens and Gods and shit. -
Yeah, I figured White died. I was just thinking he'd make more sense to get revenge on Goku for the fall of the Red Ribbon Army than a guy I'm quite certain was never even mentioned in the Red Ribbon Army saga (Gero).
Jump should have let Toriyama end Dragonball when he wanted to instead of making him make sagas that he didn't want to do which of course was the jump the shark moment. If he wanted Goku to die at Namek, then he should have been able to.

That was Japanese, buddy. Daimao's incantations while spitting up a new demon was actually a Japanese nursery rhyme…with racial slurs about the Chinese.
"Pokopen Pokopen Dare Ga Tsutsuita?"
This was what was said. Which basically translates to "Chinaman, Chinaman, who's poking you?"
However, the dub went a different route by having Daimao just giving an order as he created the demon spawn.
-

Y'know, this exact thought occurred to me while I was watching the Kai episode covering 18 and 17 curbstomping everybody.
-
I like to think that the Z Warriors' lifetime data made it possible.
Like how Majin Buu was released only due to the SSJ energy. -
I think somehow that Buu was just a reaction to the Cell arc being way too serious and way too played seriously. Heck, even the whole idea of Mr. Satan barging in from nowhere to challenge Cell was probably Toriyama beginning to revolt by saying "you know if they want an action arc, fine…but I'm not like that and people are forgetting who I was with Dr. Slump and early DB". I'm happy with the Buu arc returning the series to its roots even with some of the massive baggage it has to carry with it.
BTW: Saw a box for cheap of Saban's DBZ dub of the Vegeta arc...contemplated getting it for nostalgic reasons but not sure if I should considering it mostly would just be for novelty.
-
Y'know, this exact thought occurred to me while I was watching the Kai episode covering 18 and 17 curbstomping everybody.
For one part, the reason for the massive beating in the main timeline is Trunks' fault. He altered time so badly that he caused #16 to be unleashed, #19 to be created, Dr. Gero to turn himself into a Cyborg and for #17 and #18 to become stronger than the ones in his own time.
Part of the reason Cyborgs #17 and #18 are stronger is because of the nanomachines within their bodies that supply them with infinite amounts of energy. But because it's so powerful, it makes them out of his control. Which is a reason he went with the energy absorbing design.
As for Cell, it's obvious. He's got mostly everyone's DNA in him. Two Saiyans in his blood, making him perfectly capable of shooting up his power every time he recovers from a near death experience, and having Piccolo's DNA to fix himself up from any major damage would definitely do the trick.

He even showed that he was capable of doing action and comedy at the same time. Take Super Boo vs. Gotenks for example in the hyperbolic time chamber. That fight was pretty damn rad and it was also funny as hell at the same time. The randomness in that fight probably was the influence to gag manga like bobobo how a character would do something completly out of context of the fight than suddenly attack. Like how boo was laying down on his stomach drinking while reading a book.
