Well, Translation Team B strikes again. Sanji's now being called ''Black Foot'', instead of ''Black Leg'', Castle Gate has reverted to Rashomon, and the Fishmen trio are called the Makuro Gang in Vol. 50, and the Macro Gang in 51, like in the coverstory from way back when.
New official Viz media topic V2.

So here's what everything looks like together:
!
-
Black is a pretty ugly colour for such colourful arcs.
And lol at the the Kuma/Rayleigh conversation.
-
Pretty stupid mistranslation on Viz's part for the Kuma Rayleigh conversation, but excellent news about Law still flipping off Kidd! I bet the Bleach and DBZ fanboys are raging.
-
Thanks for the pictures. I absolutely love the cover of volume 51. Probably my favorite so far.
-
That Kuma/Rayleigh mistranslation sounds like something that should go in the Comedy thread in the general section. I should post it…
<.<;
-
I wonder where that mistranslation came from… Was it supposed to be "for real"...or... Nah. I can't put my finger on it.
-
This speed up has been great for my One Piece obsession but hell on my wallet.
Got MCM Expo in London next Saturday, hopefully going to see if I can get some deals on the volumes that I need.
Own 1-40 currently, I can't wait to hold Thriller Bark in my hands.
I'll be at MCM too and it's my first expo. I'm finally gonna get my hands on my first
narutoone piece volume, is there a mcm thread around here? -
So, am I under the assumption that B&N is releasing the June (49-53) volumes early? Or do you guys have secret ways of getting them!?
-
Only way would be to check really. My Barnes and Noble had the first Jaya/Skypiea batch early too, but only by like two days, but didn't have any of the other sets in advance. I guess it's a store-by-store thing.
-
Man, seeing those ones after 48, I hope RightStuf sends them early to me again.
-
well, I just checked my RightStuf order, and they're still "on order with manufacturer" so I don't think I'll see them until maybe 2nd week of June. Which, to me, sounds typical since I just barely received my May batch 2 days ago…
I guess I'll have to make a trip to the local B&N store tomorrow and see what's up. I may have to cancel my RS order if they're there, damn the savings...
-
Speaking of "translation team B" can anyone confirm this as a mistranslation:
In this month's Shonen Jump, chapter 549, when Luffy is talking on the phone with Marine HQ, they state that Buggy once sailed with Pirate King Gold Roger, and also is the BLOOD BROTHER of Red-Haired Shanks, one of the Four Emperors.
Now….I don't know if this is a mistransation or what, but it makes it seem like Shanks and Buggy are quite literally brothers...not sure if the scans just missed that or didn't convey that when that was what Oda meant (doubt this is the case) or Viz mistranslated a brother-like bond to be literal brothers.
Also, it's not like its' a big deal but they somehow missed Burgess's laugh, but got Blackbeards' and Lafitte's....all on the same page. Burgess has the standard Hahaha (even though they got it right two months ago), but Blackbeard's is Zehahaha and Lafittes' is Hohohoho.
Also WB reverted to Gahahaha instead of Grararara
So yeah different translation team than last month and the month before? I assume the same team did Enies Lobby and the past few months. I'm guessing this is the team that uses Hebihime?
Most of this month's dialogue was perfectly fine though. Read through it twice....those were the only two things. Burgess' laugh was hardly worth mentioning. He's not that important and they got Blackbeard's. Whitebeard's is fine either way, so doesn't matter.
The only noteworthy thing to me was the Buggy / Shanks translation.
Also, they got the Buggy / Moses joke PERFECTLY.
Buggy says "The Lord will provide!" and the Impel Down prisoners say "Are you a messanger of God!?" and Mr. 3 responds with "Youve gotta be kidding me!"
Also, I think they did a great job with Chapter 550 which is one of my favorite chapters.
Ace and the others call Whitebeard Pops which is good...casual, yet they're acknowledging him as their father.
The scene with the woman praying goes as follows.
"Even the children know of him"
their song:
"Whitebeard is humming! The devil is comming"
The woman prays, "Heavenly Father please deliver us."
....well it's not in front of me....might be deliver us or save us...something along those lines.
It seems like Viz is progressively lowering the editing standards for One Piece.
We get unedited Sadi (even though she started edited) while all of a sudden Halibel's shirt IS edited even though it never was in the past. I'm sure it won't be in the volume release as Bleach is never edited in the volumes aside from Grimmjow...but it's nice to see OP gets away with more. Well I mean, YuYu Hakusho got away with some cursing towards the very end. They went from "Pug-uglies" to using "Bastard" in YuYu all of a sudden around volume 18 / 19 lol. A little too late unfortunately.
Luckily OP is getting fewer edits now. I mean just think...the two Naruto speed ups came at the peak of Viz's editing. We got the "loopy fist" for Rock Lee, the removal of Shikamaru's cigarettes, the giant glob of white out of naked females (lol though I don't mind them whiting out the near naked Sasuke even if everything was covered)....
One Piece....well we had to wait, but aside from the whole Kami thing and Zolo (yeah way over; hasn't bothered me since like 2005 / 2006), we got a great translation and completely unedited (in terms of artwork) speed-up volumes. Had they come sooner they would've been edited.
Our patience has been rewarded =]
-
Blood brothers in that context =/= Actual brothers
-
Well yes, I know Blood Brother can also be symbolic, but I just thought the way it was used it made them seem like they were actually related…especially in light of the revelation the following chapter that Luffy and Ace are not brothers by blood....though the last chapter I've read (and am planning to read until at the very earliest August and at the very latest January) is chapter 582, so I don't know what has happened since then and in fact am only here for a few minutes to ask about this and then will be gone again until the time when I can read the manga again.
-
Blood brothers is a term that can mean brothers sworn by blood.
Similar to little boys spitting on their hands and smashing them together, or even cutting fingers to press together.
Blood brothers.
-
Finally getting around to reading the latest batch. Just wrapped up Water 7.
The the one big shame of the speedup, they so clearly have multiple translators that aren't entirely coordinating. I understand changing Tom's "Do it with a Don!" to "do it with a "boom"… since Don means nothing in English. But then for it to be, the very last time Franky thinks of it, as "with a bang!" threw me a bit
As did them settling on "haki". I'd hoped they'd go with "ambition". oh well. I'm sure thats been bitched about at length already earlier in this thread.
-
I loved how they decided to use "Haki" over "ambition" because it's rather trivial to give a known word a translation to something that's not known and more of a "name" of some object, like for example Shangri-La.
The Don parts were rather weak, I guess it means more to me when you have a word that you don't know constantly being emphasized over and over– sounds more fitting than a word which you know, and the expression seems rather dull.
-
AGOG, I feel bad for reading that first sentence at leave five times trying to understand. You're totally Loopy.
-
AGOG, I feel bad for reading that first sentence at leave five times trying to understand. You're totally Loopy.
I find this surprising… I don't really see the difficulty in that first sentence.
Shangri-La is a book's proper noun for a "paradise" and cannot be "translated" into anything specific, regardless of what you try.
Haki is also of the same practical use where it means something "spiritual" and some sort of "power" within the person-- obviously, this isn't "ambition" the word that the translators always suggest. It would mean that people were "blasting" ambition and using "ambition" to attack with their fists, for more power-- which would confuse people endlessly.
It's far better to just name it a proper noun, "Haki" is also a practical proper noun that results around some fighting stuff-- "ki" based things, or whatever. Don't care for it!
Regardless, the word cannot mean ambition, therefore, it has no real reason to be translated to mean ambition, and then confuse the readers...
-

Doesn't seem to confuse readers in Japan…..
-
Now starting 24 they upped the freaking price by 2 bucks, which WOULDN'T BE a problem, but what the hell si the extra 2 bucks for?
I agree. The economy sucks. So let's see… a high-margin luxury good like manga, let's make it either more costly, like Viz, or cheaply made, like Tokyopop.
I'd like to see more translation notes. Many series do it-- even Viz's own.
-
I've been trying to get back into One Piece and want to support the English translation, but at $10 a volume it's pricey. I've noticed Right Stuf sells the newer volumes at around $8, so my question is does VIZ get monetary support from my purchase at Right Stuf?
-
Of course they do. You're buying Viz's product. It doesn't matter where you buy it from. (Unless, of course, it's a used copy)
-
I don't know if VIZ gets a direct cut from each book sold, but if enough are sold, RS or any other store will buy more copies directly from VIZ to sell.

snipThe original term in 549 is 兄弟分(Kyoudaibun), which can mean sworn brothers. Blood brother seems like a fine translation to me, since that's about what Kyoudaibun means.
-
Ok, yes I understand now. I mean, I knew that's that the term blood brother may be symbolic rather than literal, I just mistook the way it was being used in that chapter. Sounds good then.
Also, picked up volumes 49 - 53 today at Barnes & Noble! =D
-
OMFG the next batch are out!???? D: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I was JUST IN TULSA at the Barnes and Nobles and they had NOTHING Dx do they cut out Laws middle finger!????? surely they do

Q. Did they edit Law flipping off Kid?
A. No! They did not! They did screw up a fairly important translation though.
-
They did screw up a fairly important translation though.
Yeah, I've been thinking about that "mistranslation". Given future events in the war, "You're not the real Kuma" seems to make sense. Perhaps translators decided to translate it differently? Viz does some edits and stuff, but they're translations are usually good.
-
I rather doubt stephen, cnet, and Aohige got something wrong and viz got it right.

Yeah. Even though it's just a little different, it still makes sense and is passable. I don't think it's worth making a big deal over.
-
Am I the only one who thinks it's a bit ridiculous that Viz still feels the need to constantly point out that the kanji on the marines' coats reads justice? While I did notice more footnotes for signs and stuff in this set than in previous volumes, it was pretty silly to point out that Kizaru had ''justice'' on his back in 513 when the only part of the kanji visible was the top half of the first character.
When I was first reading Vol. 53 was when it really hit me that we're now pretty caught up, on material that I remember following as it was coming out in Japan not too long ago. The various spoiler threads were going through my head, like for 514 where people's reactions were all ''Luffy's on lady land? What the heck? Is Oda really serious about this?''/''New girl's hot''/''insert penis joke here'', during the coliseum fight were people were wondering how things were going to get settled and how there was a break because Oda missed a deadline, and for 522 where most people expressed displeasure at the spoilers, but then slowly started to resign themselves to it once the pictures started coming out…
Felt good.

@Mikey:

Still, now they'd be caught in a bind if what Kuma said turns out to be very different.
-
oh my god… they... THEY KEPT HIS MIDDLE FINGER!??? I MUST GET THESE VOLUMES NOW D:!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! except no place here has them T_T
-
Still, now they'd be caught in a bind if what Kuma said turns out to be very different.
But it's already been established there was more than one Kuma at the time. But other than that I suppose you can say they got lucky.
-
Viz delete a dangling plot thread
Mikey D. Luffy: I'm not seeing what the problem is here guys. -
If it was a big enough problem, I'd complain.
-
We can only wait and see.
-
It doesn't affect me since I know what's going on, but people who don't read scanlations once more lose out. It's the same problem I have with kami et all, the guys doing everything the right way get a rawer deal then us.

Well I suppose that's one of the reasons why it doesn't bother me. But it isn't really that hard to figure out though since they say what "Kami" means in the SBS and in the context they use it. They may not be able to figure it out at first but after a few chapters they should get the hint.
And if any of my friends (who don't read scanlations, just Viz volumes) have a question and/or are confused I'm there to help them out.

You're fairly new, so I should say. These guys:

know their onions.

yeah, but the basic point is….that shouldn't be necessary.
-
So the Will of the D. is that Viz's translation in 513 is correct? 0:
-
yeah, but the basic point is….that shouldn't be necessary.
True, but it rarely happens. They understood the whole Kami thing without a problem. The only things I remember them asking about were Zolo, Rougetown (because the DVDs say differently) and the whole Gear 2 and 3 thing.
-
Don't all kill me at once for this, but wouldn't Viz's translation be the correct one to go off of? After all, it is the "official" English release. Plus some of the translators make changes as they see fit, and since not many people are fluent in Japanese, they just assume that it is correct. (I know based off of translating experience)

Awwww, I forgot some people are still new to this whole world.

The line in the original is:
お前の言う事を私に。。。信じろと。。。。?
Omae no iu koto o watashi ni… shinjiroto....?
Am I supposed to believe in your words?/You expect me to believe what you are saying? There isn't any mention about a REAL KUMA. It's pretty straight forward. All I can figure is that someone just made a mistake that made it through. VIZ normally doesn't just out and out change something for shits and giggles, sometimes they play fast and loose localizing, but that line has got to be a flub. I'm working on the assumption that it is a mistake. If it ISN'T a mistake VIZ certainly has some explaining to do…
