Chapter 584 "The Porchemy Incident" Discussion
-
-
Please don't hold back on making jokes on my account, I actually like to
steal jokesget inspiration from other people. And if I read something that really makes me laugh I'll often add it to my recap, I have done that in the past like with the Akainu memes or those Jimbei drawings that I added to the afterthoughts. -
Yes….just like a prostitute....thats the first mate of the pirate king for you
Look like you had a bad experiment ?
-
I really enjoyed this chapter but I really want to see what will happen after this flashback at AL
-
Well somehow the flashback isn't that awesome so far
-
Well somehow the flashback isn't that awesome so far
How many flashbacks are 2 chapters in?…
-
Well somehow the flashback isn't that awesome so far
And why should all the chapters be awesome? Can't you just enjoy One Piece? Are you not interested about the past of Luffy, the main character?
WB, BB or shanks will not and did not appear each chapters, how did you do to survive? -
Well somehow the flashback isn't that awesome so far
So you aren't excited to find out what a Tenryuubito is doing in the area Luffy and Ace grew up in and also that he/she may be there due to the direction actions of Luffy and Ace?
However, I think most people who don't like the flashbacks probably say that because they just want the crew to get back together.
I can tell you one thing, I do have just a 'little' sadness (which says something because I rarely get this way over a Manga) during this flashback because I really think something bad is going to happen to that kid Sabo.
Your point does make sense. But then why does have to say 'sabo thing' AND 'a brother like you…'
I mean why does he have to reiterate the point about him being closer to luffy?
I see what you are saying, but this conversation in the middle panel can be interpreted in many ways.
After reading the current flashbacks, to me, Ace is saying, "After the Sabo thing (you know, where you showed your loyalty and afterwards said you had nobody but me to depend on) and then from then on, I had to look after you".
That's kind of how I interpret that but I could see how someone would think he is saying Sabo and Luffy were the reasons why he started to feel like he had a right to live.
Man, after looking over Chapter 574 again, this picture is just sad.

Well somehow the flashback isn't that awesome so far
Most flashbacks start slow because they're a break from the storyline, so Oda must give them time to build themselves up as their own stories. However, so far flashbacks have always ended awesome, so there's no reason to doubt this one will be different.
-
Most flashbacks I find rather boring, but this one, even though it came right after the war (hands down the best arc in OP in my book) I find it already surprisingly good after only 2 chapters. I do hope it won't be too long though, will be nice to see how the main story will progress. Especially because we still don't know how Oda is going to play it.. timeskip, how/where will the crew be reunited, etc.

Well, most flashbacks since Chopper's have come with clues about the main storyline. Chopper's showed us who and what Dragon was, explained Wapol's origins and even showed Vivi's father. Franky's told us of who built Roger's ship, introduced Spandam before he appeared in the main story and showed the Gorousei wanting to revive the ancient weapons. Robin's had another "D" character, introduced Akainu's younger self and revealed the existance of the Ancient Kingdom.
With Luffy's flashback having the presence of the Tenryuubito, I bet it will reveal things that will factor within the main story. And since this seems to be the time when the Shichibukai came into being (Hancock, Jinbei and maybe Moria became shichibukai in the years just before or just after this time), maybe we will see some of it as well?
-
Is there something wrong with that? Charlos had like 13 wives, and most of them probably were quite normal people. Like the woman he decided to marry in ch.499.
Thats not love though, is it? Luffy's mom would've betrayed the Tenryubito by actually falling in love with Drgaon and running off with ihm. Charlos is just holding slaves.
-
I'm liking how fast the story is progressing. If this was Blecch, it would be on its 10th chapter.

For some reason I think Sabo might be important in the future? but then I have a sneaking suspicion that I'll be wrong and Sabo will get killed off in the flashback.

No s***. And each panel would only have the character and no other details of the background. Seriously that story is beyond sh** and is so poorly planned IMHO.

I know it got lost a few pages back but is everyone cool on the Sanji and not-swimming thing not being a plot-hole?
-
who really cares if it is.
It's so small that it doesn't really matter imo
-
I know it got lost a few pages back but is everyone cool on the Sanji and not-swimming thing not being a plot-hole?
Yeah, it's something really minor. No quips here, I think you and Rori gave an adequate explanation for it.
-
I know it got lost a few pages back but is everyone cool on the Sanji and not-swimming thing not being a plot-hole?
While the dialogue makes it seem like Sanji could not know about the "not-swim" rule, I still find it absurd that he used to read a compendium about Devil Fruits and failed to know the most basic rule concerning them.
However, I've said it was a minor plot hole at best. It's nothing important, and Kid Sanji could be bored enough to just skip the boring introdutory text of the book and just look at the cool pictures and names of the fruits.
-
who really cares if it is.
But…that's my point...
It isn't -_-
-
I am outraged at the merest possibility that a small minor detail from 12 years ago might be inconsistent with a small minor detail from 3 years ago, even if the Japanese original text does already accomodate both things without being an actual plothole.
Outraged, I tell you.

16chars of I bet this is really annoying to other people
-
16 char of this is hilarious to other ppl
-
I never looked at it as a plot hole at all. Even from the get go I figured Sanji skimmed over the "curse" section and just looked at the interesting powers like any little kid. Therefore he wouldn't realise fruit users couldn't swim. And it's not like any other comic where you have to grasp for straws to make things make sense, I know for a fact Oda would explain exactly like that. That is just how he is.

Hey everyone, RomanceDawn is gonna be on national Japanese TV with a famous Japanese TV personality. Pretty badass.
-
Hahahaha! Watch everything shown be something embarrasing I did.

Any chance of you recording it, or linking it on this site once someone else does

I thought it was a pun intended to RomanceDawn.

Still curious how the flashback in gonna handle the tenryuubito then..

No, he's actually seriously going to be on television IRL. It's pretty goddamn cool what he talked about the TV personality with too. Actually the girl he worked with is who I dressed up as for Halloween.
RE: Luffy and Tenryubito comment.
It can go either way. It's just as ambiguous as the comment from Jaya. In fact, the far more mysterious and compelling part (in retrospect) is what Luffy was about to say before Hacchan silenced him. He was about to say, "Those guys-", or "That guy-" which at the time we could have thought was, "Those guys can't do that!", or,"That guy can't even move!", but it could just as easily have been, "Those are the guys that XXXXXXX."
Goddamn you Japanese language and your ambiguity.

Interesting thought, but unlikely.
Luffy could have heard of the Tenryuubito before, back at the time his flashback takes place, but since he mistook their dog as a possible Tenryuubito at first, it is quite unlikely that he ever saw more than a far away bubblehead-figure of them. Even less that he could identify the one or several who did XXXXXXX in his childhood.
Knowing Luffy, he was probably stuck in a very awkward situation for not getting a clear shot/glance at the Tenryuubito. -
I'm not suggesting they're the same individuals. Simply that he may recognize the attire.
Either way, I'm in the camp that their presence will influence an event and they won't directly influence Luffy since he seems to have a good memory of that period.
But Oda could totally pull off as I suggested with how he set it up.

You know what the best thing out of this flashback is? It's that you have only a vague idea of what it needs to do yet no idea on how it's going to do it. Pretty exciting.
-
Thanks for the promotion Greg, though I am actually dreading a scene that only had one take. I almost killed her camera man.

Wow Romance. Impressive. Thanks for letting us know, Greg. Please let us know what went on and what all you talked about etc as soon as its feasible to do so. Very cool.

OK, that sounds like a good story. Do tell. Common, you know you wanna.

Thanks but it's nothing impressive(seriously it aint), I wouldnt have said anything if Greg had not. I just did a few stunts for her show. Her people wanted a scene where a bunch of us are practicing martial arts. Where they walk through the door and they just see so much happening. Like its just the norm in hollywood. I was swinging this big staff around, and I was somewhat close to a wall so some of my swings were much slower than usual as not to destroy anything. Then her PA's and Camera man come in behind her and get so close to me. I didn't even realise until I turnd my eyes to swing, and I think I made sudden stop as not to smash the camera. Anyone who knows what wushu is will be like "that guy doesn't know what he's doing" hahaha. I was thinking, can we do another take? and they just went on. Guess they like what they saw.
On Topic:
How would you all feel if Luffy touched a Celestial Dragon in his flash back? I can't imagine if one comes through that the Child Trio would leave them untouched. Or at least with an attempt to attack them, no way are they going to be pals with each other. Would it lessen the impact from the first known hit if Luffy attacks them here?

Thinking about this, and have some questions, but as you pointed out, its off topic, and you seems to want to drop it, so I will too. Thanks for sharing, though. It was cool, just as I'd suspected, lol.

I'm confused and feeling thick, and so I'm not sure what you're asking us here (not enough coffee, yet, today). But if you're asking if the impact on the reader of his attack on SA is lessened if we learn that he had already hit one in the past, then I'd say for me, no. That punch in SA was just altogether too satisfying for the experience to be lessened by any previous experience he'd had, or at least it seems to me at this point, without knowing what's to be revealed as the fb continues.
However–it would point to what I have been seeing as a growing maturity and sense of self restaint and leadership in Luffy since as far back as EL if he restrained himself and had a previous bad experience with them (as opposed to restrained himself because he'd been asked and he saw the merit in the request, etc, as we were more of less lead to believe on that chapter… If that makes sense.) It would add another layer to his actions and motivations that we previously were unaware of.
-
Yeah you understood right. Good god, did I word that terribly. If Luffy hit a Dragon during his youth it wouldn't lessen the impact on me from the first incident we saw. Just wondering if anyone else might get upset about it, if it were to happen.
I survived the buster call, feel free to PM me if you want.
-
not to mention we dont' know if Luffy knew who he was back then.
If Luffy as a 7 year old kid see's some adult (the tenryuubito) do stuff don't like and hits him, to him its just a normal guy.
In shabondy Luffy knew who he was, the consequences of hitting him and still did it. The fact he knew all of that makes the punch awesome, if luffy was ignorant to it, then it would lose all its impact. It woudl just be a funny moment like when zoro asked him if he needed directions and was gong to kill him.

Japanese can be absolutely frustrating at times…
I hope all goes well with your Television performance RomanceDawn!
I just read the chapter again and I love Sabo's exchange with Dadan. It's priceless. It reminds me of Sanji's "クソジジイ”.
