Damn, even though the title gives it away it's just so….emotional! Damnit, oda is taunting us. This had better be turned into a high quality episode.
Chapter 574 "The Death of Portgas D. Ace" Discussion
-
-
At least he died with a smile on his face… ;3;
Thus, another 'Will of the D.' trait is shown.
-
The Marines are gonna breakup we are gonna have the marines that follow absolute justice such as Onigumo, Akainu,Doberman and the other morally corrupt marines will try to enforce a totalitarian rule over the grand line. While Garp, Aokiji, possibly Sengoku, Smoker Tashigi become either outlaws or break off from the marines .
-
Heartbreaking… but I have to say Jinbei, Marco and Vista are looking really cool this chapter...
But Ace died with a smile on his face... he was a D
-
Oh yeah about Ace dying with a smile on his face I hope it's clear to everyone why going off what he said. He's spent his whole life with insecurities, self-hate, and self-loathing. When all those ppl came to fight for him to live his question was answered. In a sense that was his dream to find out if his life was worth living/had any value in it.
He never really wanted to be PK and he only wanted to make WB PK because WB made him feel like he belonged.
So after getting in that last goodbye to WB, it was easy for him to die protecting his brother with a smile on his face.
Dude never had much of an ambition compared to a simple minded/one track mind Luffy or you could say his ambition was much more vast given what he wanted was so relative.
-
Unbelievable. I havent felt this way in a while. At least when I see a fictional character die. This is a rescue mission arc. SJ titles are notorious for these things, and here we are slapped with the biggest rescue arc we've seen from many series, and BAM! It comes out as a failed mission. Oda has caught our hearts with this one. His delicate preparation has further proved why he is among the best of the best manga-ka period.
I salute you Oda-sensei
You salute Oda for a lame arc [so far] that was already dead and you believe wasting a character who doesn't go out in style unbelievable?
-

Oh, and man, you can bet Luffy is also going to be even more pissed off with Blackbeard once all this is settled.
-
I really shouldn't have read this before I leave for school.
Now I'm shaking and crying like a baby. ;__________________________________; I bet I'll be like a zombie whole day….Seriously, I just can't believe this happens!! T_____________T He has always been my fave chara (with some others). I really hope that someone will come and do his/her magic and then he'll woke up. ;_____; In other hand, I hope not.
At least he died with a smile on his face… ;3; I wouldn't cry this much without that last panel... Heartbreaking indeed. ;______________________;
Marco's phoenix tears perhaps? Maybe some type of haki life force transfer from Whitebread? But I also I see the point in keeping him dead. It's just that I like Ace but oh well, wait and see I suppose. :/
-
But's sad we never have saen the full extend of willpower roger's son had… his haki would be amazing...
But well like Zik said... He wasn't about fame...
R.I.P Ace... and poor Luffy
-
You salute Oda for a lame arc [so far] that was already dead and you believe wasting a character who doesn't go out in style unbelievable?
I salute Kubo for killing Aizen with style…
Or was it all an ILLUSION... again?
Seriously though, go back to your beloved Bleach/Naruto.
-
i thought i would be happy seeing ace die but no i actually almost cry
fuck you oda and your wonderful manga
sniff sniff
EDIT: i forgot to say ….lol who the hell said that oda loves his character too much to kill them?? oh and im a noob :ninja:
-
Very emotional chapter. It's not so much that the loss of Ace that hits me, it's all the emotions the characters are expressing, every word they say, every flashback panel…
Luffy needs a hug after all this is over...
-
Leave it to Oda to take Ace, a character that I have hated since he showed up and make me feel sad about his death. Great chapter Oda has flipped the game by killing off a major Character. BB needs to show up because I think I might like Akainu as much as BB now
-
Man… The look that Garp and Luffy gave after Ace's death really tore me up inside...
-
This is…. if I were somebody to cry at movies/manga I'd have been crying all day. Ace was my childhood comic hero since I was 12 years old and started reading OP. He was always my number one favorite in the series... always. In fact, he's most of the reason I decided to pick up the manga/anime again after not reading/watching it for about 4 years or so.
I don't know what his death will do, or if it's permanent, but either way I'm absolutely dying inside at this.
For all you who dislike Ace or liked this death, I feel no anger for you. Now just let me cry internally in peace.
-
….This entire time I've been acting like Ace's death wouldn't impact me.....
I hate the things that Ace did, but.....
And Luffy's reaction is just.....
One of two things is going to happen:
-Luffy is going to FREAK OUT SCREAMING HAKI, nearly killing everyone around him (friend or foe).
-Luffy is going to be dragged by someone (I think Jinbei). He'll cry horribly. And from this day forth, the next few arcs will be very dark.I think the ladder is most likely, but the prior would make sense considering how much we've built 'haki' up and how much Luffy is going to feel broken now.
-
Eh. I don't see Ace's death as tragic so much as amusing in a sick kind of way. Oda makes his readers tap their feet through an incomprehensible free-for-all to finally get to the execution platform, and after they finally stop dicking around and get his cuffs off, he gets cold-cocked (or rather, hot-cocked) by Red Dawg. That's a cheap shot that you just have to nod with respect at for how slickly it was executed. Not the greatest comic-book cheap shot ever, but still respectable. Well played, Oda. Well played.
I'm gonna miss him, I guess, but I can't really say this breaks my heart by any stretch of the imagination. I see it as a very reassuring turn of events, because it means that the plot is finally going to start moving again, hopefully back to Luffy's crew, so I can see what they've been up to. Luffy had his fun with his jailbreak, now I want to see Nami swoop down in her balloon to rescue Chopper from cannibals with a lightning storm. And of course more of Zoro and Perona's epic (?) team-up.
If anybody, fuck Luffy, I feel the most sorry for Buggy. He's just lost his best drinking partner (although he's probably gained another one in the form of Mr. 3). Luffy will be fine, eventually.

That could happen but one is vertain this will have some effects on LUffy… I bet someone has to pull him out of his deep hole
-
More over…. I don't want to know if this will be in the anime...

This post is deleted!

I'm wondering how Garp will be able to stay a marine without attacking Akainu. He's not going to cool down about this for along time.
I'm also a little surprised Garp has such confidence, almost like he could kill him easily if Sengoku didn't stop him.
Although, I realize that's just words but it seems Sengoku believes he can do it. Either that or he's just holding him back for political reasons or to save Garp.
The way it was written tho made it seem to me Garp could kill an admiral with no problem. Even tho he did fight Roger and Shiki etc. Okay, I'll stop since I'm rammbling in circles now and not even sure what my point was. ^^;

Something tells me that the one to pull him out will be:
-Hancock (EXTREMELY, HIGHLY UNLIKELY!!!!)
-The Strawhats -
On a slightly different topic, I would like to extend props to the cover page for this chapter. Nami is no fucking slouch at Whack-a-Mole. Luffy better watch his ass.

I'm not sure if this was in a previous chapter or forum talk, or even maybe a dream, but I remember Garp saying at the execution platform that no matter the outcome of this war he will be quitting the Marines…I can't seem to find the chapter though...

-The StrawhatsWell I was thinking more about the SH, who all had a big lose in their life, Jinbei, Garp or even WB, who will say something to him ike that is the world of pirates.
Boa is cool and all but he is to unexperienced with life
-
Luffy's face at the end is fucking heartbreaking. Dunno why some of the guys who posted at the spoiler thread think it's goofy and out-of-place when it's the most appropriate reaction IMO.
Goodness, I'm gonna be depressed for a month. I'm neutral about Ace, but I never thought his death would've impacted me so much like this. Damn, Oda, damn…
-

You dreamed that.

-The StrawhatsSupernovas started heading over there a couple chapters back. Shabondy is only about 20 minutes away from Marineford, so right about now is when they should be showing up.

I'm talking about One Piece.

I think, if anything, Hancock, Jinbei, Ivankov, and Inazuma (just cause Ivankov is there) will protect Luffy, but not snap him out.
I think the next few arcs will be the rest of the crew getting back together. Luffy enlightened their lives (except Zoro….sort of, but we all know how faithful Zoro is to Luffy either way). It's most likely payback time.
@robbybedfart:

True, but I don't think they give two shits about Luffy. The only one who seemed to enjoy Luffy's company was Law, but that was mostly because they both are laid back and disliked Kidd's attitude.

Akainu is the most cruel sadistic manipulative character and villain that Oda has ever created.
We've seen him ordering his men to destroy the refugee ship in the Ohara Incident 20 years ago as he believes in 'Absolute Justice'. He kills off a Marine after the latter, who was scared, attempt to ran from the battle that take place in Marinefort Square. Squado got easily manipulated by Akainu and the latter killed Ace, with his chest being punched through by Admiral's magma fist from behind.

Spandam and Spandine are a bit jealous with that statement.

-
damnnn shit just got serious
-
Maybe we just witnessed the birth of an all new Luffy. Darker, or perhaps less bold, happy-go-lucky, the guy finally realized there is death out there, and that if he messes up, next body on the floor could be a strawhat…
-

lol
Too bad Luffy rarely notices sexual innuedo.
Hell, he was confused when Hancock invited him to see her naked.
-
God Oda knows how to draw a character crying. The moment I saw the close up of Ace's face I started to tear. It really is sad, and I just don't know what to say.

That picture, and "Thank you for loving me".
That REALLY pulled my heart strings.
I don't want to watch the anime version of this. I will cry buckets of tears.

I'd stop reading One Piece if Luffy becomes emo like that.
Also, I think he already knows it to an extent.
!
-
I really wish our only computer wasn't in the living room, my family is looking at me weirdly for crying while typing. What a heartbreaking chapter.
I was skeptical while reading the original spoiler summary about whether he would be revived or not, but the pics, and especially him dying with a smile, convince me.
He may not have been my favorite character, but I feel like making a new avatar in his honor for a least a little while.
-
I cried. I cried and am crying.
I'm afraid to know what's going to happen when I see this in the anime, I'm going to be bawling, and I thought Merry was bad.
-
hhmmmm very good chapter, but i would wait until next chapter to write ace as dead…
don't want oda to pull another pell
-
rest assured. Anything emotionally sad in the manga will be made 10x more emotional and tear jerking in the anime. I don't think I've ever cried so much when Robin said she wanted Luffy to take her with him… even recently I looked at Robins past and balled my eyes out just looking at the MANGA and I remember thinking that her past didn't effect me much! MAN was I stupid.
So I imagine this and Bonchan staying behind will make me cry so hard people might think I was beaten. xD
-
So what's the title cover?
-
anyone feel like this the manga equivalent of
S4a-qrcuNIA
Im crying on the inside T_T
-
Oda did something really differant with the title cover
-
awww "fire fist" ace is currently viewing this thread… must be sad to lose the character u named urself after :(
i think this chapter marks the 1/2 way point 4 the series
edit: OMG i remember when aeris died i almost cried! and i like never cry!

Yeah, I think that would be appropriate.
The death of Ace (god it still hurts to even type it) being the catalyst to the new age.

I remember that. It was a fake spoiler.
