Here's hoping Conan will move on to bigger and better things.
wow… there you have it.
Here's hoping Conan will move on to bigger and better things.
How? Seriously, how?
I'll be entertained every night, and Conan will be a rich fuck.
And he can move on to doing something that's more suited for his style of comedy.
^ Which would be nothing?
I'm just surprised that people somehow manage to actually like what passes for Leno's "comedy."
Being perfectly honest here, the only thing I've ever enjoyed him doing was the voice of the Crimson Chin.
I'm pretty sure this isn't win-win, Conan's reputation and pride are screwed, no matter how you look at it. Leno's probably not, he's been through this kind of thing before, and I don't take Conan's fans to have the level of undying rancor 4Kids haters have, so they'll probably get over it in anywhere from a few months to a few years.
Conan made it a big point that he always wanted to host The Tonight Show, and that's why he stuck to NBC. This is worse than NBC simply not keeping its promise, it's basically saying "yeah, you sucked, so we're pulling the plug".
Conan can't simply brush this off as people not giving him a chance, he has to acknowledge the bad ratings, which just reopens the wound from when he was first starting out. He can't completely blame NBC for the low ratings, it's partially his fault. A second "personal failure" as it were.
No amount of money is going to close that wound, and certainly the other networks are going to make note of this. They might give him a show, and will probably give him more opportunity than NBC, but if he still doesn't pull his weight he'll be silently canceled a few years later.
When you're washed up, the best thing to do is self-parody…so maybe Conan should join Comedy Central for a mock late night talkshow like how Colbert parodies The O'Reilly Factor.
Also Jimmy Kimmel was kinda funny, not Leno funny but still.
I liked some of his skits with Adam Corolla on The Man Show but I stopped watching it when he aired that home video of him waking up at 3:00 AM to bang his wife. That was just…tactless.
I'm just surprised that people somehow manage to actually like what passes for Leno's "comedy."
Personaly i just cant get enough of the Kev smokes grass jokes. I could watch em play of each other all night long.
No amount of money is going to close that wound.
Im sure being financialy set for a lifetime of exquisite luxury will do something to sooth his pain.
Pretty much after next week, Conan. I'm done watching NBC. And become full time viewer of CBS, ABC, and Fox.

There's still NBC Nightly News.

The only NBC show I regularly watch is The Office and I despise Fox but if Conan did move there I'd probably watch him.

And I'm just suprised at the irrational hatred for Jay Leno I'm seeing here. I know Conan and Jay have had fun ragging on each other for a long time, but it's always been in good fun. They never were actually feuding. No need to take an actual side, people…
Until this affair happened, I had no idea, there were fanboys for late night talk shows. I mean, god damn, internet, what the hell…?!
What do they got worth watching.
Lets see from what I watch Cougertown, The Middle, Scrubs (another show that NBC screw over), Modren Family, and Castle.

Even if you've been under a rock for the past five years like I have, you should be aware of legends regarding how frienzied Family Guy, South Park and Conan fans can get.
Many of the older "memes" have their origins from those three shows.
Where the memes go to die.

agreed. I don't really have any "side" for something like late night talk shows. Either I watch them or I don't… they're funny one night and maybe they aren't the next. I don't care for the interviews.. I just watch for the skits. And there are other shows on with more skits, so I usually watch those.
I guess i could say that i've always liked Conan more... but I don't dislike Jay.
haha, talk show fanboys... sounds like people arguing over game consoles.
Internet indeed
Modren Family
It's actually pretty fucking funny
Rosie O'Donnell said Leno should just walk !
badum tich!
No but seriously, Jay Leno can rot under a rock while locust eat his skin, dogs peel his meat, roaches walk inside of his bones and his children get raped by horses.
But really, why must the children suffer, the horses should rape Jay directly.

Coco and Leno-head.
Until this affair happened, I had no idea, there were fanboys for late night talk shows. I mean, god damn, internet, what the hell…?!
I actually haven't watched Leno in years, and I don't care if he's on one way or another, and since Conan moved timeslots, I never caught him anymore since I watch the Daily Show instead. So for the last year I really haven't given a crap one way or another. So I don't know about "fanboy" in this instance, and before this, I didn't have anything at all against Leno.
I just happen to think its absolute bullcrap that a guy worked for a company for 15 years under a certain understanding, and CONTRACTS, (contracts that Leno also signed and agreed to and was happy with five years ago! They could have negotiated all this then!) and is now being screwed around like this.
The thing is, we'll never know how well or badly Conan would have done without the Leno show in front of him, lowering the following and lead in. (Is it the local New's fault that their viewerships are 25% lower than they were before the Leno show? When those didn't change people at all? that's specifically got to be the show before it. In this case, Leno's variety show.)
The fairer thing to do, would be to take off Leno's lead in, and let Conan try for another couple months WITHOUT the abberation bonus talkshow in front of him and the news. If his ratings still absolutely sucked in 3 or 6 months, well, THEN consider bringing Jay in.
But since Jay never retired, and his show did bring down the ratings of everything around it, and he's walking right back onto the Tonight show and getting no hiatus at all, and Conan has made the stand of "No, this isn't right or fair" but Jay has not… he's coming across as a total ass in all this. COMBINED with the fact he did it to Carson AND Letterman 20 years ago, and it paints a picture.
So yeah. two weeks ago, I didn't care. I didn't watch either show and really wouldn't have cared if they went away. But in THIS situation? Where EVERYBODY is getting screwed and Leno seems to be the only one coming out ahead? The dude just happens to accidentally keep screwing people out of the Tonight Show? (Jonny, Letterman, and now Conan?) Its full of bullshit.
Well of course there are fanboys, cant belived anyone missed the whole Leno or Letterman deal. Just check any youtube clip of either one and you'll find a fuckton of people arguing til the cows come home about who is the funnier, more sophisticated, or just plain better one.
And to paraphrase Cartman, Leno just goes around imposing his will on people, isnt he awesome:happy:
We'll see whether Conan's popularity is limited to a few fanboys or the majority of late-hour television viewers really soon. Fox is jizzing in their pants as they are about to offer a deal to Conan, and they will give him his liberties (look at the differences between Mad Tv and SNL)
NBC is a company ruled by scumbags, no wonder Leno got the job:

! Conan's Deal to Leave NBC Finalized
! Network agrees on settlement terms.

! January 15, 2010 - Update: And it's done! The Wrap now reports that Conan O'Brien and NBC have come to terms on his departure and O'Brien is getting $30 million as part of his settlement. The deal still needs to be signed, and of course, everyone is waiting to hear how long O'Brien has to wait before he is free to do a new series.
! Also still to be announced is O'Brien's final day on The Tonight Show, but most assume it will be next Friday, the 22nd.
! Original story below:
! There's still no final word on what will happen with Conan O'Brien, but that didn't mean there still wasn't more drama occurring with the very messy situation.
! Multiple sources say that O'Brien's team and NBC are close to finalizing the deal that will see O'Brien leave The Tonight Show after only hosting the show for seven months – with Jay Leno stepping back in as the host. The final terms of that deal need to be ironed out, but O'Brien will be getting a large payout.
! The Wrap.com says O'Brien is likely to get at least $25 million, but that NBC wants the amount of money he gets to vary depending on how long he is restricted from staying off the air. Right now, it looks like O'Brien could be stopped from beginning a new show until as soon as September or possibly a longer wait until January. It's widely assumed that FOX will make O'Brien an offer to come start a new talk show, after he has officially severed ties with NBC.
! One major bone of contention is whether NBC has breached O'Brien's contract or not, by asking him to move The Tonight Show to 12:05 – which is what is causing O'Brien to leave. The Wrap says O'Brien's team argues O'Brien's deal called for him to host The Tonight Show at 11:35, while NBC counters that wasn't the case – he was contracted to host The Tonight Show, regardless of when it aired. If NBC were to be found in breach of the contract, it would be more cut and dry and they would owe O'Brien $40 million. Meanwhile, even as we were hearing that the two sides were close to a deal, one of NBC's bigwigs went on the attack against O'Brien. Dick Ebersol, Chairman of NBC Universal Sports, was quoted in the New York Times as saying, "What this is really all about is an astounding failure by Conan," when it came to the performance of his show and adding that NBC, "bet on the wrong guy."
Ebersol also says O'Brien ignored his suggestions to make his show more mainstream when he took over The Tonight Show and – referring to O'Brien and David Letterman's recent jokes about Jay Leno -- said it was, "chicken-hearted and gutless to blame a guy you couldn't beat in the ratings."
! While he heads up the Sports division, and thus is not directly tied to the O'Brien situation, Ebersol is still a powerful person at NBC and a good friend of NBC Universal's Jeff Zucker – the man who started all this trouble in the first place, by first making the deal for Conan to take over The Tonight Show six years ago (which many feel was premature) and then by starting up The Jay Leno Show, when he didn't want to lose Leno to ABC.
IGN
Good for him, I'm glad he's leaving that shithole. Hopefully he will get a new show and do great on another network.
lol those who think that those late night guys don't have fanboys or memes has never gotten on YTMND, though lately (besides youtube), there hasn't been much floating around on other sites.
I'm hoping people will boycott The Tonight Show when Leno comes back on and send it's ratings to hell. Leno should not get off completely free from this.

I'd be suprised if even 10.000 people cared enough to follow through on something like that.
Since most people don't care enough to watch it on a regular basis anyway, they could just not watch it period :P

NBC to keep Coco's masturbating bear
By Matthew Belloni and Nellie Andreeva
The Masturbating Bear is dead.
As a deal nears for Conan O'Brien's exit from NBC, one thing is certain: the characters and recurring comedy bits O'Brien originated during his 16-plus years on "Late Night" and "The Tonight Show" will not follow the host when he leaves NBC.
The Peacock owns the intellectual property behind such popular O'Brien characters as Pimpbot 5000 and Conando, as well as recurring segments such as In the Year 3000 and Desk Driving. Sources involved in the settlement negotiations say NBC is keeping the copyrighted and trademarked elements of O'Brien's shows as part of the deal. That means the bits and characters will likely never be seen after O'Brien's "Tonight" ends its run Jan 22.
While the vast majority of the characters O'Brien introduced are said to owned by NBC, it's unclear who controls Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, the crass canine puppet that is perhaps O'Brien's most popular recurring bit. Triumph was originated by writer and longtime O'Brien pal Robert Smigel, whose reps declined to comment on whether Smigel or NBC owned rights to the character.
In 1993, David Letterman got into a dustup with NBC when he departed "Late Night" for CBS's "Late Show." NBC attorneys attempted to prevent Letterman from taking intellectual property originated on "Late Night" to the comic's new home. Letterman responded by dropping certain bits and renaming other recurring segments–"Viewer Mail" became "CBS Mailbag" and frequent guest Larry "Bud" Melman began referring to himself by his real name, Calvert DeForest. Letterman mocked the dispute on his first "Late Show" when NBC anchor Tom Brokaw interrupted the monologue and stole cue cards in the name of securing NBC's intellectual property.
O'Brien, if he lands at another late-night show, might be in a tougher spot. Unlike comic personalities Letterman and Jay Leno, O'Brien began his career as a writer on "Saturday Night Live" and "The Simpsons," and his shows relied more heavily on the cleverly scripted bits and outrageous characters.
Losing those assets could hurt O'Brien as he looks for another home, although his "Tonight" had featured fewer of the characters than "Late Night" and the host--who is considered one of the top comedy writers in the business--may be looking for a fresh start. Sources close to him said he was not interested in taking his NBC characters with him.
Refii and Sano really know how to keep a discussion mature, eh?
And why the hell would NBC want to hang on to characters and bits they'll never use. Ah, right, Zucker and his pals are immature as hell (just look at their statements regarding Conan recently). Spite, got it.
Maybe he should rename them as the article suggested. I'm partial to the title 'Auto-Erotic Ursus' myself.
If NBC thinks they can cripple Conan with this, though, then I can only assume that they've forgotten the advent of innovation and that Conan is known for exploring different comedic territory.
I hope for the final blow this upcoming week, Conan bring out the Mastubating Bear, the Pimpbot, and Vomiting Kermit. If don't know what Vomiting Kermit. Here it is.

Conan can pull out all the stops next week since he's gone anyway.

This entire fucking scandal is based around 13 year old behavior and an asshole with an e-penis complex that is screwing over his co-workers lives.
Imagine one of your co-workers, or classmates taking the promotion or the credit for a group project two years ago for another co-worker/classmate of yours.
Now that co-worker/classmate takes your promotion/grade, gets you fired/expelled and ruins your your fucking valedictorian/employee of the year status within the school/job that you've worked for the past 6 years.
This isn't a mature discussion, this is a discussion about an adult acting like a child, and ruining his "friends" lives.
Fuck Jay Leno.
I do hope he does goes all out next week. Since he got Tom Hanks on Tuesday, who is one of Conan's good friends. And I hope he gets Will Ferreal next week as well
The whole situation is a bunch of bull, the old people are scared of change, they miss there leno
He should get Howard Stern, another Leno hater.
I heard Conan is trying to get Stern on the show sometime this week. And if he does then bam. All we need then a guest spot for Letterman (which won't happen, but I have heard rumors that the next night Leno starts up again, Conan will probably appear on Letterman.).

So did you miss everything, then? Leno had absolutely nothing to do with this.
Here's a great read about Jeff Zucker from a member called ffhc2008 from GameFAQs:
Jeff Zucker: Worst TV executive ever
A lot of people don't quite understand what's going on with NBC and why they've fallen off a cliff in the past several years. A lot of people don't understand the root problem of the Conan/Leno debacle. Responsibility falls at the feet of NBC Universal President & CEO Jeff Zucker.
Jeff Zucker's first big break at NBC was when he was a producer on The Today Show. He was pretty good there and led to a revitalization of the program that launched them into 1st place overall in the mid-90s where they remain to this day I believe. So because of that, the guy that used to hold the position that Zucker currently has hired him as President of NBC Entertainment which meant he was responsible for overseeing development of new shows.
Ignoring the fact that he was woefully unqualified for that job in the first place, his resume early on was a mixed bag. He oversaw the development of a ton of new reality shows at NBC, some worked and some didn't. However, it was when Zucker was promoted to this position that NBC finally started losing its long-time position as the #1 network as CBS usurped them.
Incredibly, Zucker kept getting promotions throughout most of the last decade to the point where he was in complete control of NBC in 2004. Not surprisingly, that's when NBC really started cratering. Zucker's first major show push he gave in '04 was the epic Friends spinoff failure, Joey. That was all Zucker.
Another major move that Zucker made back then was to force Leno out…in five years and to promise Conan The Tonight Show in '09. This was done out of fear of losing one or both of them to other networks. Conan was very close to jumping ship to ABC in '04, but decided to stay at NBC for less money for The Tonight Show in five years. So another one of Zucker's first moves was to cancel (in 5 years) Jay Leno, who was far and away in first place. It made no sense then and it obviously makes no sense now. Why he didn't just let Leno walk if he was planning to put Conan on at 11:35 anyway....who knows?
From '04-'07, Kevin Reilly, the then-head of programming at NBC, managed to keep things afloat. Reilly is known as one of the best TV minds out there. He was behind the development of ER and The Sopranos. When he was with FX, he launched The Shield and Rescue Me. He was the one that kept The Office on the air when it was almost canceled after its first lackluster season. He was the guy that gave NBC its one legitimate scripted hit throughout Zucker's tenure in charge in Heroes...which completely fell apart when Reilly left which I'll get to in a second. He developed 30 Rock.
So how did Zucker reward Reilly, a TV master, in '07? He fired him of course! And who did he replace him with? Someone even dumber than Zucker, Ben Silverman. Silverman was/is openly mocked throughout the industry. He was drug-addicted moron whose first order of business was to throw a "white" party at NBC complete with bikini-clad ladies in charge of white tigers. I'm not making this up.
So while Reilly was a guy that actually had some hits under his belt, Silverman was....not. Take a look back at some of the shows NBC launched in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Some of the dumbest **** you'll ever see. That was all Ben Silverman.
Meanwhile, Reilly took the same position he had at NBC at Fox and look at how great they've been doing over the past few years. It looks possible that they're not going to have to cancel a single new show this year due to poor ratings. That's damn impressive.
Anyway, so Zucker continued to let Silverman turn NBC into the CW with no objections at all. He stopped caring in '08 when he said that he could no longer see a scenario where NBC would be #1 again. My, my, what an inspiring CEO to have.
Finally, due to pressure from GE, Zucker fired his buddy Silverman in May '09, but countered that smart move with the decision to start The Jay Leno Show, which has turned out to be perhaps the biggest blunder in TV history. It's been no good for anyone involved. Oh yeah, and the recent debacle with Conan/Leno? 100% the idea of Jeff Zucker as well. Bravo sir!
One last thing. Remember how I said that Zucker is in charge of not just NBC but NBC UNIVERSAL? Universal Pictures has also cratered under Zucker. They're the one major Hollywood studio that has managed to lose a ****load of money despite the booming Hollywood business under the recession. Read up on some of their flops last year like the mega-budgeted disaster Land of the Lost. A lot of the responsibility here falls to Ronald Meyer, but Zucker is the one that's keeping him employed.
Do try and pay attention if you're going to act like a 4-year-old and flip your shit. You wanna freak out at someone, yell at this asshole:
I suggest anyone thinking of making further accusations read this article before making a fool of themselves. Particularly.
Mr. Zucker said that it was during a phone call in the first week of January from Jeff Gaspin, NBC Universal’s head of entertainment, that he learned that the network’s affiliates were threatening to pre-empt the Leno show. “It was becoming tough to deal with,” Mr. Zucker said. “The pressure from the affiliate body was strong.”
Mr. Gaspin’s idea was to move Mr. O’Brien’s show to 12:05 a.m., and give Mr. Leno a half-hour show at 11:35 p.m. “That’s what he wanted to do, and I said, O.K., give it a shot,” Mr. Zucker said. The shot exploded in their faces.
Leno could have said "No, this isn't right, let's try something else first", the same way Conan did.
Or actually retired when he said he was going to retire instead of immediatley jumping into a thunder grabbing variety show in an earlier slot that undermined the transition.
Conan, for his part, could have been a bit less pissy about "it being half an hour later is the most horrible thing that could possibly happen to the history of the show ever!" I understand why he didn't want to be directly behind Leno and nearly in his old time slot again, but he still had the honor, prestige, name and paycheck of the show (and in half the country that would still be at 11:00, not midnight) and could have given that idea at least some consideration first, and tried it for a couple months.
If after say, three months, the situation didn't correct a little, something else could have been done.
Similarly, Leno could have gone on Hiatus for a couple months leaving Conan with different lead ins, to again, see if the show corrected itself with different stuff around it. And if by… APril, things weren't a bit better, THEN they could try a half hour of Leno before him.
There were several less extreme options that could have been taken and tried first. And there's blame and egos aplenty to go around. Zucker is obviously the worst of it though.
But Leno getting the Tonight Show from a THIRD person, and not having any hiatus time at all, (and his 9 oclock show clearly having an adverse affect on the ratings) while Conan's entire staff is now out of a job, really does paint a picture of a bad guy, even if its not Leno's fault.
Leno really couldn'tve said anything about it, except do the same thing Conan did. He has no control over this. I can't begrudge the man for wanting to work and make money, no matter how much of it he has now. He even said, when he annoucned he'd hand the Tonight Show over to Conan, that he wasn't leaving showbusiness.
As you can see from all the reports on this, Zucker and Friends are refusing to bend on this issue, which is why Conan is leaving. He tried to talk with them about this, Zucker said "fuck you," Conan replied with "no, fuck you, I'm outta here."
And I hope he gets Will Ferreal next week as well
Ugh Ferrell has to be one of the most painfuly unfunny men of all time. And yet he keeps getting work.
The fucker has got 50+ movies under his belt and he's still only ever gotten two laughs from me.

I prefer not to take bloggers with names like ffhc2008 on GameFAQs when I can read news articles.
By Hollywood standards, Mr. O’Brien’s letter was an extraordinary gesture — releasing a statement to make public his anger at the company paying him tens of millions of dollars before he even reached a settlement…
Jeff Gaspin,
Pause: Who is not even mentioned by the tv aficionado ffhc2008
(and yes, I did read both your article and his long blog-post, and I don't accuse you of not mentioning him, I am stating ffhc2008 doesn't have his facts straight)
.. the chairman of NBC Entertainment, who broached the idea last week of shifting the late-night lineup, said he was motivated by trying to retain both stars, not to drive Mr. O’Brien away. But other NBC executives indicated privately that they would be satisfied with a new late-night lineup with Mr. Leno back at “The Tonight Show” at 11:35 and Mr. Fallon settling in at the “Late Night” show at 12:35.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/13/business/media/13conan.html?scp=2&sq=conan&st=cse
Furthermore (and here's the good part!)
"My goal is to keep Jay, Conan and Jimmy as our late-night lineup," Gaspin said.
He characterized the plan as a "compromise" that gives Leno what he wants – his old time slot back – and lets Conan keep the title of "Tonight Show" host.
"I hope and expect that before the Winter Olympics begin, we will have everything set," Gaspin said.
"I can't imagine we won't have everything set by then."Read more: http://www.nypost.com/p/news/national/just_call_him_conan_flyin_ThND8Mdv5MI5Pv8udof1LJ#ixzz0crDO8Pye

Freudian slip?
Now I may not be a fancy big-shot poster like ffhc2008, but according to the news reported, and the fact that I have never heard in the history of television a network offering a host with abysmal ratings his choice of a show he was officially fired from according to Jay Leno's own words during his talk show.
Jay Leno got the tonight show from Letterman, who NBC was in negotiations with and was Carson's choice, and now from Conan who was promised the show for the past 6 years, and took a paycut to stay with the network rather than going to ABC (Jimmy Kimmel) in exchange for the Tonight Show (since its creation) at 11:30.
A host with failing ratings gets prime time positioning, and a host with superior ratings that is just starting out is fired. Make your own judgments, and don't rely on blogs.
I'm just going to finish off with the fact that Conan had about a week to make a decision, if you were given a week to give up your dream-job that you worked hard with less money for the past 6 years to get and suddenly saw it become obsolete, wouldn't you be pissed?
A host with failing ratings gets prime time positioning, and a host with superior ratings that is just starting out is fired. Make your own judgments, and don't rely on blogs.
In that case
It's all NBC not Leno.

If I'm getting a severance package worth 30 million….no.
If I'm getting a severance package worth 30 million….no.
Im sorry Conan, but as barbaric as it may seem we are going to have to ask that you take your huge celebrity severance package and go take a higher paying job at another channel.
Hahahahahahahahahaha! Nice one
So Leno is talking to Jimmy Kimmel and…
_FNmWFD4oWg
lmao Oh wow. He got his ass roasted.
Now as for Conan, think of it like this. Not only is hosting The Tonight Show his dream job, but he's trying to keep the show where it's been for several years. The show belongs at 11:15pm, NOT 12am. Otherwise, as many others have said, it would no longer be The Tonight Show. It effectively becomes The Tomorrow Show. Why even change something that's been in place since it started?
NBC is at total fault, but even then, Leno sees how bad this hurts Conan and doesn't even bother to do anything. He's just basically standing there, saying "Well, okay then. Sucks for you, eh? I suppose I'll take control of the show again, then."
Im sorry Conan, but as barbaric as it may seem we are going to have to ask that you take your huge celebrity severance package and go take a higher paying job at another channel.
For the second time, although I think I'll have to post it a third, since you guys are posting based on your personal bias:
- 6 years ago, Conan had an offer from ABC to do the show Jimmy Kimmel was doing, for more money, the same prime time hour and more freedom. Conan stayed at NBC with less money by negotiation that in 6 years he would be the host of The Tonight Show, a show he loved and cherished due to his great respect for it.
If Conan only cared about the money, he would have already left. The actual sum is anywhere between 10-20-30 million, based on how long he agrees to stay off the air from another network, it won't be 30, because he loves his show.
Vacation? If you actually watched Late Night television, you would know that during the strike, he was freaking out, he grew a beard and hated not working.
There is a little something certain people in the world have for their job, it can be categorized as love, respect or simply pleasure/thrill. Conan had this feeling for his show, and the thought of hosting The Tonight Show. If you don't respect or love anything in your own life as much, I'm sorry you won't be able to sympathize.
NBC is NOT at total fault. Jay Leno wished to reclaim his old time for his new show, essentially returning to the tonight show with a different moniker, read what Gaspin said again: "He characterized the plan as a "compromise" that gives Leno what he wants – his old time slot back – and lets Conan keep the title of "Tonight Show" host. "
Lets Jay have what he wants, and lets Conan the shlub keep the silver medal.
Think what you like, when this thing is over, listen to the interviews and listen to how he feels when he gets a new show; you probably won't care by then but w/e.
