BTW I loved this chapter… If the rest of the war has chapters like this, it seems like One Piece's old story pacing has returned :D
Chapter 553 "Battle of the Highest" Discussion

Why was Marco referring to WB as the "King"?
Because like Elvis, Whitebeard overdosed… but on HAKI
-
@Dan:
Regardless, an introduction box is not some magical instant vindicator, i don't think. It's all from Oda.
Yeah they pretty much are instant vindicators because they are the narrator which in manga, is all knowing. It's the the authors way of establishing facts (like bounties, titles, and unseen events). So there is a huge difference in the narrator via intro-box stating that one is the strongest person in the world and a character claiming that they or someone else is the strongest person in the world. If we doubt WB as worlds strongest then we'd also have to doubt Sengoku is really fleet admiral, Dofla and Kuma are really shichibukai with relatively enormous bounties, etc etc.
Why was Marco referring to WB as the "King"?
He's the king of the seas. The strongest man/pirate (at the moment)

Chapter out on One Manga: http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/553/

Thank god Oda changed the shape of WB's mustache a little. It doesn't seem so fake now.
-
Marco is an avid Chess player.
-
is it just me ??? what did mihawk really tell donflamingo?
to test his strength or a questioning of whitebeards proximity being really close even though he has long attack ranges. -
That's Komir, not Garp.
You know, I think you're right. My eyes deceive me! I was so focused on the sexy va Tsuru (and the fact that Garp was last seen with her) that I forgot about Komir's fantastic style in hair.
I suppose I will join the search for Garp… maybe he's with Pandaman :getlost:
-
Why was Marco referring to WB as the "King"?
He was basically saying that it's too early for them to be heading for WB. They're basically the knights defending the king. Once they prove themselves by facing the knights then they earned the chance to face the king.
-
Awesome chapter.
The more i see it, the more i'm thinking Marco has the Phoenix ability. That'd be so awesome. -
Why does Onemanga split up the double page spreads? That kinda sucks… On the other hand though, parts like Jozu look much better up close like that.
Marco's power looks even more interesting now, it looks even more like he has wings, and you can definately see his hands seperately. On the last page you can see the end of the "wing" covering his face too, if I'm correct.

I thought he is spinning but maybe he isn't spinning after all if you look closely.
-
Why was Marco referring to WB as the "King"?
Think chess. "Ya can't go straight for the king, ya know."
Hate to correct you, but you mean Jozu vs Mihawk, right?
That's it.
-
Wow thats i am calling an intersting chap, the Whitebeard Pirates seems much stronger as expected and the marines got their asses in real trouble…phew...i hope we can saw Tsuru in action though, her sentence to one of the Vice Admiral was kinda funny...too...
-
Well that's weird. The mangashare translater has Mihawk attacking because WB's in range. The onemanga has it as he attacked to test the difference in power between them. Anybody with the japanese raw can accurately translate what was said.
-
Yeah I hope someone clears this up
-
@$abZ:
Oh and I was right in thinking Jozu and Marco are stronger than Ace.
Uh… why? Because they each blocked one single attack from an admiral/shichibukai?
-
I thought he is spinning but maybe he isn't spinning after all if you look closely.
To be honest, it looks like a bit of both IMO. It really looks like wings in the first small pic and the last one, but the one where he actually deflects the attack looks a lot like hes spinning. Could be spinning in a pheonix form? I guess we'll have to wait before we can tell.
-
Think chess. "Ya can't go straight for the king, ya know."
The onemanga translation has the chess reference more clearer. It says "You can't go straight for the king on the first move, you know."
-
So marco really is a phoenix?
-
@Brave:
is it just me ??? what did mihawk really tell donflamingo?
to test his strength or a questioning of whitebeards proximity being really close even though he has long attack ranges. The second, a questioning of whitebeards proximity being really close even though he has long attack ranges, because it was translate in a similar way in a German translation and I have trust in them.
-
Found something for Marco DF

Oh, and people claiming that luffy isn't in the chapter are wrong, watch carefully
! >! >!
-
are the boa pirates part of the pirate force? looks like Boa Sandersonia is attacking with the captains.
edit
!
-
For the Garp issue….don't you think he's too much important character to participate in battle against elite mooks?
-
So marco really is a phoenix?
We don't know for sure, but you can see feathers flying all over the place indicating wings. Fire plus feather wings usually mean Phoenix.
It seems that Davy Jones guy is just a Squid/Octopus Fishman with his pet Octopus on his head. Obviously he fights with all 6 of his hands being full, so when he needs to open doors, pick things up, or plays the organ, the Octopus does all the work. I can assure you that's how Oda will explain it.
First chapter where there is more characters running around that actual words. First time for everything. I wish we could know exactly what Sengoku was refering to when he said "at least.." I hope that was the actual translation. Becuase he may be refering to something that they still have up their sleeve, or something he is glad isn't there with WB at the moment.
-
The second, a questioning of whitebeards proximity being really close even though he has long attack ranges, because it was translate in a similar way in a German translation and I have trust in them.
so do you mean to sayu mihawk was talking about distance rather than power?
-

http://media.onemanga.com/mangas/00000002/000211372/09.jpgThey look alike, but it's not her, she's part of the Kuja pirates, not WB - or she would be fighting against her sister!
-
Can someone confirm was Mihawk was REALLY saying?
-
Anyone thought about that Marco is maybe the one with a dragon zoan??
What if he is the long awaited first fabel type zoan??
If not, you heard it here first :P -
^ I came up with a lot of Mythical Zoans in the Create Your Own DF Thread. I doubt he's a dragon, but I guess it's possible.
-
I've finally realized one thing that causes tension on this board. Instead of going "this guy is weaker then that guy," why not just "this guy is strong?" It's when you call someone's favorite character weak that's when all the fights start! Of course, even then some people do it on purpose.
Also, quantifying that "Mihawk and Shanks are rivals in swordsmanship," while speculating "Shanks could know other skills," is beyond lame! No one would rationally add that line just so someone else would twist it so that one was stronger then the other? Oda said these guys used to fight with swords against each other, and now I wonder why people just can't leave it at that.
Anyone who states "Shanks can be stronger if he's not just a swordsman," want Shanks to be stronger then Mihawk. It's a detail that's useless to the story.
Meanwhile, anyone who states "Shanks must be weaker without his arm. He can't still be as strong despite what Oda said" are ignoring facts given by us to the author just to make Mihawk stronger. It's annoyingly biased and useless to the story of One Piece.
Yeah, I'm getting fed up with people putting their favorite characters above the plot of the show.

I guess I am the only one who thinks that's a flaming cloak or maybe even a cape that Marco is draping over his head.

Well it could be spinning but if you look closely it could be fast movements of his wings.
-
As i said in the spoilers thread…!
http://apforums.net/showthread.php?p=1222438#post1222438
yes you heard it here first =D and i'm still hoping for it! one of the ancient zoan devil fruit and yeah and the thing about garp…lol i think he fell asleep in the middle of an epic war hahah
-
Blinktopia translated Jozu (after his Mihawk block) as "Captain of the Third Squad - Diamond Jaws".. is that maybe some kind of old batman or james bond villain? :P
-
Well Jozu does sound sort of like Jaws. Unless Jaws is written Ja-zu :ermm: .
Edit: The Japanese title for the movie Jaws is "ジョーズ" Joozu.
-
Uh… why? Because they each blocked one single attack from an admiral/shichibukai?
Nah, I meant that me thinking that Jozu and Marco are stronger than Ace wasn't a bad guess. Not that it was true.

Don't you post in the Shichibukai thread?
-
so do you mean to sayu mihawk was talking about distance rather than power?
I mean that he only aimed for Whitebeard and doesn’t say anything about his strength compared to Whitebeard.
-
I don't think Jaws is a correct romanization for Jozu. Jozu is written ジョズ while Jaws is written ジョーズ. Has Bink used Jozu before?
-
Didn't anyone else think that Marco isn't spinning as we thought but moving his wings very fast?
-
-
I mean that he only aimed for Whitebeard and doesn’t say anything about his strength compared to Whitebeard.
then that says it all
most of the bullshit trying to put mihawk down is because of what people thought he said. if he was testing distance then theres no reason to use his most powerful attack because he was attacking wb and it was just a power slash like i've been saying
can you quote what he said?
-
So marco really is a phoenix?
this looks more like a dragon to me…but i would like both ways, and the other as the last strawhatmember
-
But then someone says "He blocked the world's strongest sword slash!" I guess this could just be saying that Mihawk is the strongest swordsman, though :ermm: .
-
Didn't anyone else think that Marco isn't spinning as we thought but moving his wings very fast?
Makes sense, especially seing as the "wings" are only at each side, not at the top/bottom. It could just be the way its drawn, but overall, it seems more likely anyway.
-
@Kairouseki:
But then someone says "He blocked the world's strongest sword slash!" I guess this could just be saying that Mihawk is the strongest swordsman, though :ermm: .
Yeah… I think only Mihawk knows if he's using his full power. It's just Oda throwing all these "strongest slash !!" & "the king" into the battle to make it more epic.
-
actually i just realised
istead of using akainu to attack wb he used mihawk
aka suggesting that mihawk is admiral level
2 admirals attackign with mihawk
and if mihawk told flamingo he wants to see the distance then attacking mihawk to get a ruler measurement is badass
-
Well the spoiler thrad was full of Mihawk and this thread is once again full of Mihawk…
I trust in Mihawk's words...
