ok, well what happened was my dad was watching the news,
and when there was a break he changed this this other channel
(this was on chinese TV)
then he like called me over to watch this 'anime'
i was like LOL. pirates eh? (the chinese dub was OK..)
this was when it came to nami's arc.
then i fell in love with the hot-guy-in-a-suit-with-blonde-hair-smoking-24-7.
aka: sanji.
after that.
onepiece was my love.
How did you first start liking One Piece?
-
-
To be honest, it wasn't until February of this year that I got into One Piece, and because of this I'm only up to watching the Skypiea Arc (episodes 163 today ) for the first time. Can't wait to get to the CP9 stuff though!
But what got me into it was BigAl's and Tsukento's rants on 4kids' ruining of One Piece.
After watching DBZ a million times, I needed an anime that had a similar style to get into, and One Piece was just begging me to start watching it.
-
I watched the 4kids dub when it first came out, and liked it
eventually I searched online and found out that people hated it compared to the original, so I watched that and here I am blank years later
-
I went to the library and One Piece Volume 1 caught my eye. I decided to read it since I couldn't find any better books.
I never knew that this would revolutionize my anime/manga life.
-
i am ashamed to say 4kids. I saw it, thought it was ok, looked online, found onemanga
-
a good friend of mine swears the rap is good. heck a LOT of my friends like the 4kids rap. i have no earthly clue why. and no they are NOT 8 or 9 year olds.
KUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMINATOR…............................................
Hell no, I love the rap too, I meant I realised gradually how bad 4KIDS actual dub is. I mean I know in comparison to the original Japnese We Are/theme songs - The Gum Gum Rap doesn't compare.
But on its own, I think the Rap is pretty good, although that's probably just because I like rap, as a style of music …

I hate the rap, but you should try listening to it twice the speed, it's actually.. ok xD
My first dose of OP was the anime. Hated the art, swore I'd stop, but I got hooked to the story that I really didn't mind it that much anymore. As the arcs went by, the story & anime art became MUCH better.
Now I'm really glad I tolerated the crappy early anime art, now OP's my favorite manga/anime.
But still, the animation doesn't do the manga any justice. -
When I was 13, I usualy watched some shows during Friday Night. Most of them being stuff like Zatch Bell, Yu-Gi-Oh and Dragon Ball GT. One day, they removed Zatch Bell and put One Piece. At first, I didn't really like it, but, I often let the Tv play the show while I was on my PC so I often heard the dialogues. At first, it sounded liek a stupid anime with a retarded main character but, after starting to watch a few episodes, I quickly got drawn into it. Then, they removed it and put Naruto instead…
That's when I stopped watching Tv... even thought I watched Naruto on my PC a few months after.Yeah, then, at the age of 14, I wanted to watch One Piece again (The 4kids dub I grew with) but I couldn't find it in the web. Then I heard they did a bad job with the translation of One Piece and no one really liked it. So I decided maybe there is a new dub. So I checked out the FUNi dub but I didn't really like it. It just didn't feel fight.
I didn't want to see the japanese anime either so Ì gave up. Then, finaly, at 15, I decided I'd finaly watch One Piece. But since I still didn't wanna watch the anime, I read the manga instead. I don't really regret it. I read it for 3 whole days (Around 36 horus total) from beginning to end. Loved every minute of it. I didn't expect it to last this long knowing that I finished 100 Naruto chapters in 1 hours or so but One Piece really has a lot of content per Chapters.Finaly, I watched the One Piece movies and specials and also the fillers that where not present in the manga and that looked interesting. I also watched the arcs or parts that I wanted to see in animation. So yeah, that's how I learned about One Piece
-
Luffy's uberness against overhelming stereoid Kuro. And later Gear Second gives this-is-best-manga-ever feel. Haki might be next.

Three Words, Man, Three Words :
Gum Gum Rap
(Shivers at the fact that 4KIDS' Dub drew him into liking
basically Dragon Ball's Successor as Japan's Greatest Anime/Manga/Series)I lawled so hard reading this!
The first time I watched it was when my brothers were watching it on 4kids. I just stopped and stared at the screen. I love pirates and study nautical history, so I was intrigued. The dub was horrible and I had a good few laughs at it. After a while, I stopped watching it because I couldn't take the horrible editing. (A sleeping bullet?! REALLY?!).
A months later I got bored one Saturday and started looking for a new anime to start. I remember going through youtube and remembering one piece. I didn't really give it an honest try in the subs, so I thought "hey, nothing to lose".
I started watching from the Baratie portion and couldn't stop after that. My friends thought I was INSANE when I mentioned how awesome the show was. Everyone only ever knows of the 4kids version, which is a crying shame!
And the rest, is history ~
-
well…one of my friends was watching one piece and he recomment it to me.we saw the 1st episode together and i liked it(one piece true fan)
-
I started watching One Piece in july 2008. When i was downloading Remastered Dragonball Z episodes on DBZ-media in march that year , i suddenly noticed they were uploading a new series(One piece ) , i downloaded one episode of the series , never to watch that episode till i went on vacation in july and took my notebook with me. When i was bored during the vacation i watched that one episode. 3 weeks after the vacation 250 episodes had been viewed by my eyes
-
Hm, well I was kinda obsessed with pirates after the whole Pirates of the Caribbean thing, so when Cartoon Network started showing this pirate cartoon I wanted to watch it, and I thought it was pretty good except for the fact that I couldn't understand a word Sanji said (he was still my favorite though…go figure) until they got to the Alabasta arc. Then all of the cutting out of stuff caught up and I didn't know what was going on. (Who is this 'Mr. 3' and why does he matter?!) So I stopped watching.
Later I found the english subs for one piece online and I remembered that I found the series enjoyable so I started watching those. And the rest is history.
-
I first got into One Piece via the anime fansubs back in 2002 or so, somewhere around there.
Hooked from the first episode, though I'd let a year or two go by here and there, and then would marathon those enormous stacks of episodes.
-
I saw my first-ever One Piece episode in Japan years ago when I was 5 years old. It was one of the Buggy episodes (although I can't remember which specific one due to time eroding my memories) and lo and behold, the silly-looking clown suddenly breaks apart into pieces! For a five-year old, that was pretty traumatic. I decided I hated it (and oh, how I regret it). I moved to the US in 2003 and never gave OP a thought.
After moving around a bit, my family eventually moved into a friend's former apartment in 2007ish (he moved back to Korea) and I found stacks of Korean One Piece volumes (1-44), Naruto (26), and a complete series called Mr. Sushi King or something like that. I opened the first volume and closed it almost immediately when I saw a little boy stab himself in the face. I ignored the volumes completely for a year.
One day I was bored. I had stacks of One Piece volumes within reach. I said to myself, what the heck. It wasn't instantaneous, but I ended up loving it. I watched every episode subbed or raw, it didn't really matter, and still continue to do so. And I'm continuing my "inherited" collection of volumes, which is now up to volume 52. Yippee! A volume every three months, an episode every Saturday/Sunday, and manga spoilers every week keeps me pretty satisfied.
I use printed colorspreads as my binder covers to which classmates respond, "That show is for kids," "I saw that tv show before," "Did you draw that?" But I laugh the most when they whine about cleavage shown on Robin in the "Merry Men" colorspread. Poor kids. Aaaaand, I typed too much again.
-
Its all thanks to the Naruto fillers…
I was bored and wanted to read a long on-going series, it was a toss up between Hajime no Ippo, Detective Conan, and One Piece. I ended up watching the anime of One Piece first. I knew the premise of the show and some of the characters but never really gave it a chance before because the first few episodes put me off...stupid mistake on my part
I was reading spoilers left and right so it took a while for the series to give me suspense lol, after I caught up, the middle of Thriller Bark wasn't really exciting me enough then the chapter when Kuma arrived at TB came out and it made me go WTF!!!
I took One Piece seriously after that...
-
Hmm… it was around three years ago? Well, whenever 4kids used to show it on Fox. I think it was around one of the Kuro episodes. I saw it, and fell in love with it. I had no idea what anime was or that the Japanese version was so much better. The only good 4kids has done to OP was making me a fan of it.
-
It was all thanks to 4KIDS actually.
I was watching Dragonball as like a daily night-show since I had nothing to do around 9-10 p.m and didn't want to go to bed yet. But one day, One Piece was on so I watched it. For some reason, it caught my interest (I was like 9 or something) and thought Luffy was funny, apparently I didn't hear his voice or was deaf since his 4KIDS voice was obviously annoying. But yeah, I became a narutard and didn't pay much to One Piece after that.
But like 2 years later, I started picking it up again at the enies lobby ending arc where it shows Luffy's gear 3rd. It got me addicted and than I turned away from Naruto forever.
-
My brother and I started watching Pokemon on ToonamiJetStream when the website was relatively new. Pretty soon, One Piece (albeit the 4Kids version) was added to the roster of shows. Now, I had seen commercials and the like for the show when I watched Teen Titans and Sonic X, but I have to say that I was put off by the art style at first. Anyways, we decided to just watch the first episode and see how we felt after that (we also watched an episode of Naruto this way but I just can't seem to get into that show). It was okay for us at the time, because pretty soon we couldn't wait for a "new" episode every week. Then they took it down and we found out that FUNimation was getting the rights (and by this point, Sanji's 4Kids voice was starting to grate on my ears). I think during the watching online we started buying the manga so we could compare and see how the two were different, and then soon afterwards we bought the Wii game and then we really got into OP.
Sorry if that sounds a little disorganized anywhere; I've injured one of my fingers and it's made typing a little difficult.
-
yes…it was alll 4KIDS!! i remmeber omg good times
every Saturday when i was little i watched it..since the first ep...and i loved it..sanji..made me want to watch it..something about fighting with his legs was awesome to me. i watched it up to the arabasta arc then it stoped showing and i was like -- -- -_-

...Typing this made me want to watch the whole thing over again….damn you -
about the 8th grade had really bad OCD so I had to read constantly to get out of the habits anyway I always read MARVEL comics up to that point but I was getting bored of it. So when I went to a Barnes and Nobel I saw the manga section which I had always neglected but recently I had gotten a one piece game for my Birth day and remembered hearing it was a manga so I went and found it I read it and fell in love with it on the first chapter and haven't stopped reading it since
-
My sibling got me to watch it when I was like 8 years old.
Truth be told I didn't like One Piece when I first heard, so avoided as much as possible (for about 2 years lol), I was a little kid did not know better xD
I watched the anime first, got up to Enies Lobby xD and then I couldn't wait anymore for releases, so started reading the manga.Ahhh, I never regret my decision after 6 years lol
-
I started watching it a few years ago when it was first came out in North America..It was the 4kids dumb…I watched it every saturday morning up until they canceled it. I went without OP for like 2 years I could not find it anywhere. I found it last year and got all caught up and read all the magna. HAHA it was funny I thought that the 4kids OP was good until I saw the subbed version that is.
-
When i first saw the funimation dub and it was kuro arc i think, I notice a person with green hair holding 3 swords with 1 clutch in his mouth(zoro duH!). It was like who is that guy he looks cool and then it was a turn off for me when luffy starts using "rubber power" i thought it was just a joke but i started liking this show. Ya it was that "Pirate Rap" made me puke though.
-
for me it (Seemed) like a normal day.I was watching cartoon network when i saw a commercial for one piece. i was thinking "aww c'mon pirates?!can you people get any lamer?" somehow (probably lost the remote;p) watched it, and thought by the song (which now i realize sucked), "hmm, i dunno about this show." i was about to change it when…it came on (finally because the commercials were like 10 minutes long!) and i saw the fight. it was the fight of sanji vs gin (the episode was called here we go a'gin' -_-') and i thought, "that guy is tough(and awesome)!woohoo go...whatsurname blonde guy! (lol)" so ever since that, i loved OP and sanji as the best ever.wow, even with HORRIBLE 4kids dub, somehow i thought sanji was cool( of course he got 50x better when i saw the sub)my favoritism must have been meant to be ;p the only good think 4kids did was get me addicted to one piece (woohoo for that i thank you 4kids!but i yell at u for everything else)
its wierd, whenever i hear about a new anime, i always think it's gonna be lame. then i watch it and end up loving it. that has happened to me with at least 4 shows(strange..) well maybe its good i thought OP was lame at first!;p
anyway, that is the story of OP came to be my fave anime of all time. ah, a wonderful day i will never forget!
-
I was watching cartoon network and it came on. I watched for a bit and was almost turned off by the horrible crap of an intro song, but i stuck through the bad music and bad voices and saw what was a great anime in the making. When my friend said he was watching Japanese versions of it, i jumped on the cruise and never looked back.
-

can you believe a aite with a name like that exists? O_o -
in 2007 i watched an episode of one piece, can't remember which one but it wasn't that impressing. about a year later a cousin of mine showed me a clip of the luffy vs blueno fight and i thought "daaamn, i HAVE to know how this stretchy guy got to be such a badass"
the next day i was reading the first chapter (cuz i didn't really like the colors in the anime) and got hooked. -
First introduced to what Manga/Anime is by a friend from school - obviously in my youth I had watched yu-gi-oh, pokemon, ect I was unaware it was called anime though -. He had a rather bizzare taste, well, he introduced me to FMA and Trigun which I enjoy greatly, but he also liked the slightly more erotic types, which, is just weird =D
Then a year later or something, over the summer, I was quite bored and thought," Dammit i'm bored, I wonder if there's any good tv show to watch… I know what about those anime things." I looked them up watched FMA and Trigun, and wanting more quickly moved into Deathnote, I saw Bleach listed as a popular anime. Got really hooked, even through the shitty fillers :). I caught up, and remained bored untill the next bleach episode the following week, I thought,"hmm, I wonder which other anime are popular ... oh, one piece, oh yes I heard about from a friend last new year, hmm she said it was about some stretch-armstrong-esque guy, meh I might aswell try it, it has a good few episodes released, should keep me going." I wasn't sure untill the baratie arc, after that I was completely hooked.
-
After Akira, Ninja Scroll, Urotsukidoji and others I liked anime.
Samurai Champloo got me back into it. Bleach was dope, I mean the Soul Society stuff. I tried One Piece as well. It stuck after the 2nd episode. Morgan was ok, since Buggy its been Bananas. It got better and better. Since Skypiea its my all time favourite, Oda is a genius. -
@Psycho_Kenshin:

you may have seen some of the old subs i did way back in the day. i started watching it back in like 2000-2001 or so. back when 1 guy was doing all the episodes himself. i ran into the manga about 6 months later when i got fed up with his slow releases. i eventually started my own subbing project called optp not long after, but the people involved eventually lost interest and it ended up dead. it seems like ages now since that all went down.
-
well my case is easy….saw luffy vs croc. as a first ep. and after that had to start watching from start.....still no regrets ^^
-
The first time I heard about One Piece was about 2001, when I learned that my little brother was watching a cartoon named "Lastik Çocuk" (in Turkish, meaning that "the rubber boy") on TV. At that time I did only have a chance to watch the fight between Luffy and Don Krieg. However, afterwards I could not find the other episodes of the cartoon(at that time did not know about the concept of Anime).
After I started watching animes in 2006, I learned that the cartoon I watched once was an anime named One Piece. Before watching One Piece I watched Bleach and Naruto, but with One Piece(start watching in Spring-2007) I faced with an incredible story. I started reading the manga when it was at the end of Water7 arc, and since then I have been a fan of the work done by Oda sensei. -
I don't know if I've answered this before… but it all started with me buying accidentally a Shanks plushie in an Anime Convention and then some guy telling me that it was from a Manga "One Piece" they were selling a few stands ahead. The rest is history.
-
It was around spring 2004 (I guess) when they started to publish One Piece in Finnish. Back then we didn't have almost any translated manga in stores, so I wanted to try out every new series that came out. I had never heard of One Piece before, but I had been a fan (of some sort) of Dragonball. The first volume seemed interesting, and I decided to continue buying it. After every released volume I started to like the series a bit more, but volume 6 really did it for me. Suddenly everything was turned upside-down: Nami stole the ship, Mihawk appeared and defeated Zoro, Zoro making a vow to Luffy… And I was hooked.
After that volume, I downloaded a bunch of One Piece music, watched anime openings and endings and, after a while, started to illegally download anime for the first time in my life. Before this I had refused to do that, but the urge to see One Piece characters in color and hear their voices was too strong. I never watched the anime further than I had read the manga, as I continued to buy the Finnish translation once in a month. Only recently (few months ago), when the process of publishing One Piece was slowed to one volume in two months, I finally decided to catch up to Japan (at the moment, the latest Finnish volume is vol. 45). I still buy the volumes in Finnish, too, but it's great that I can't get spoiled of the future events now. ^^
-
I first stumbled upon One Piece on a german channel(RTL2) around 2001, I didn't like it at all because I thought it looked really ugly, but every day there was an episode and one day my sis said it was really great and that I should watch, it was episode 37. I really liked Luffy(Ruffy) because he was such a great friend, stopping Nami from stabbing herself and the walk to Arlong Park nailed it for me. There was a couple of times when I got bored with One Piece and forgot about it, but when Water 7 aired I stuck with it. I'm following the japanese version right now and found the manga, too! Such a great series.
A few things that surprised me with the japanese version were the character voices, they sounded really wierd to me and that in the german dub opening 1 was altered and 2 skipped. Oddly I like the 1st german opening more than "We are!" because of the full version's guitar solo :D
Great tune!"We are!" is great as a series theme though!
-
well this is how i got into it. well actually i first liked it wactching 4 kids not knowing what they did to it of course. so i watched to like a little before the final coridle vs luffy fight than i think i got sick of waiting for th realeases so i started wacthing the japense subs and really enjoyed it, then kept watching it. it was later untill i realised all the things 4 kids cut out of the original. thankfully funi came around and picked it up after post allabasta.
-
I read the first chapter and it was hilarious! started reading somemore and now always reading one peice. And I started to search for a One peice fansite and here I am now.
-
There was a book fair at my school and there was an issue of Jump there (I don't think they sell them anymore in book fairs). I picked it up and flipped through it and stopped on the page where Zoro sliced himself open while fighting Cabaji. So I started reading it and thought it was awesome.
-
zoro vs mihawk EPIC
-
At some point when I was working on costumes it came on tv after something else I had been watching. I glanced up from what I was working on to see a character who looked EXACTLY like Schala from Chrono Trigger. Same hair, same earrings, same purple cloak. Dumbfounded, I had to find out what the hell I was watching. I was only able to find out that the show was called One Piece and the character's name was Vivi before the episode ended, but soon after that I noticed the comic at Borders and picked up the first couple volumes. And then I was hooked. ^_^
-
Hmmm… friend referrals I guess... XD
I was hooked to SLAM DUNK and DBZ before... then friends just told me to check it out... hehe... I skipped the manga chapters and just watched the anime, a faster way to catch up... then I was curious if the story was the same in the manga... and thats where it all began... the OP manga obsession... woot woot... XD
-
I waited for Yu-Gi-Oh to start.
Before that there was One Piece. I didn't realy pay attention, but Luffy's fight with Crocodile is what really caught my attention.
I forgot about it.
One day I remembered.
I watched a few episodes. More. Got even more interested.
And here I am. I love it.
-
Around 5 years ago, I was on holiday in America. I was a DB nut then and I bought the Shonen Jump there cos of the DBZ characters on the cover. In there somewhere was a chapter or two of Luffy vs Buggy. I wasn't bothered about that and forgot all about it completely until last year, when I discovered the wonders of manga online. I first got into Naruto, then I saw something famillar…
@Suzume - You lucky bastard. Over here, we're bordering on the release of the 21st volume...
-
As much as it pains me to say it, I used to watch the 4kids dub when it was still on FoxBox Saturday mornings, along with Shaman King and Sonic the Hedgehog. Then it came on Toonami, after Toonami stopped being weekday afternoons, with Yu Yu Hakusho and Ruroni Kenshin, and started being Saturday nights with Naruto and Dragonball. I was fine with the English dub until they decided to JUST STOP in the middle of the Alabasta arc…so I discovered the subbed version online, then the manga, and fell in love.
Now I look forward to getting a new chapter every week.
The End. -
i started off reading the first volume at a barnes and nobels and fell in love with it on the first chapter (no lie) and it's been my favorite manga since
-
Oh wow… Can't remember how many years ago it was, 2004 probably, when I first started reading that Shounen Jump magazine and it was in the Usopp/Kuro/Kana business, it was really interesting. I really liked when I would read random chapters in the magazine and then when the 4Kids dub came on FoxBox I watched it but, it was progressing really slowly and so not holding my interest as much as Shaman King was at the time.
I always sort of liked it but I kind of forgot about it because I couldn't get into it, then someone turned me on to Dub Piece about 3 years later which was epicly hilarious, so that got me interested in seeing some of the episodes, though I never really made it that far I read more of the manga starting with Water 7 and it was like <3 <3 <3
Though then it stayed dormant again until last month, I mentioned something about the series to a friend and how I wanted to cosplay Kaku a couple of years ago and I had no idea she was really into the series, so I got into reading/watching W7/Enies Lobby arc and I missed a bunch of stuff from just reading spoilers the first time and I was totally hooked again. And now I'm actually reading/watching other arcs besides that.
Its alot slower paced then what I would like but it's just so full of win. It's seriously strange how much more I like this the older I get, rather then most things that are the opposite way around o.o;;
-
I'm with choperman. I read the first volume and fell in love. It was also the first manga I've ever read in my life.
-
hm, i knew of it for a while but the art creeped me out (now i love it!). I had read a lot of other SJ titles, and finally i was going through a really bad break-up and wanted to get my mind off of it so i read 20 volumes of one piece in a few days and have been hooked ever since.
-
I was looking for similar mangas to DBZ and seeing authors who were influenced by Toriyama. I started reading Naruto first.
Then started to read One Piece and after the first volume I was pretty hooked.
