So while discussing things with my friend, I considered something I had previously considered about the ongoing arc. First things first: We still don't know for sure what 'Haki' is or entails. That said, the subject is Haki and Magellan/Luffy.
Alright; so when people were discussing the possibility of Magellan being a logia, I thought that the one thing they (people arguing this) had going for them was that it would give (force) Luffy to fight an opponent he could only beat if he somehow figured out he could make contact by…for lack of better terms, "imbuing his hands" with Haki. Another topic that this covered (in my head) was the danger factor Magellan possessed, and whether or not his assumed temporary-defeat this chapter was acceptable or not. See, Magellan's Poison powers make him almost the same as a Logia in the sense that he is invulnerable to a degree. Swords, projectiles, etc. are still a threat to him of course, so I expect him to still be strong, but to people like Luffy who fight hand-to-hand he is as good as a Logia due to the fact that you cannot touch him (unless you want to die). This works well for Magellan since most prisoners don't have weapons (especially projectile ones). This makes his temp-defeat acceptable to me since his abilities' large defensive bonus made Luffy's action all the more dramatic and powerful. SO! Back to Haki. When Sentoumaru started hurting Luffy (along with his phrase), I began wondering how he was suppressing Luffy's Rubber Defense without a Devil's Fruit. When Rayleigh vs. Kizaru first appeared, I began speculating as to how he (Rayleigh) was able to fight Kizaru at all; perhaps Haki had something to do with it? When we saw Margaret imbue an arrow, I was almost sure (99%, that is) that Oda had some interesting plans for Haki, and among them were suppressing the defense a given Devil's Fruit* supplies. Then there was Boa Sisters vs. Luffy, and I was as sure as I can be. Strangely enough, despite people arguing with me about this forever, it seems to be accepted as fact now…?? Oh well, moving on.
Back to Magellan and Luffy. If Oda is using this...saga [Duval, Saboady, Amazon, ID, Etc.] as a means to making Haki Luffy's next step up the ladder, then how and where will it manifest itself next? First we had Motobaro, then we had the Arena, and now…? I think Magellan would be the next best bet, and his being a Paramecia (vulnerable, yet invulnerable to a degree) would make it the perfect opportunity to make its first practical appearance. To clarify, I am suggesting that Luffy somehow manages to "imbue his fists" with Haki in order to bypass or work around the defense (and counter-attack) that Magellan's poison gives. See, the reason I think this would work so well is because, while it would showcase Luffy using Haki, it wouldn't be showing Haki to its full extent, leaving room for growth. Essentially, it would only serve the purpose of allowing Luffy to avoid death (or loss of arms) upon touching (attacking) Magellan. While he would still be forced to fight, dodge, defend, etc. against Magellan, the lethality of simply touching Magellan could be removed (to a degree). Hard to explain exactly, but I think this gets my initial thought and point across. Of course, I won't even try to predict how Oda will unveil or use all of this (if he did), but I think the possibility is decent that this is the route he will go. It could, of course, include something like a reaction from Magellan – ex: "How are your arms unaffected!?" -- and a flashback-thought from Luffy -- ex: "Just like how that snake lady and tub-o-lard from Saboady hit me...?" -- to get the reaction and surprise across while showing Luffy only beginning to understand it.
* This made me think about how Devil's Fruits work; though unexplained completely, Haki could simply be suppressing part of the power that the fruit itself provides.
