ha. that's a great argument. sometimes science needs some blind faith too. :P
Do you believe in god?
-
-
hmmm, religion is a dangerous thing to discuss, things can turn into quite the turmoil but the question at hand, believing in God is a though one. I myself don't see myself as a believer of god and actually an atheist but questions do arise. If in the beginning there was nothing and evidently at some point this must have been the case, where did everything come from, what was the big bang and what caused it and even it it where an other dimension that exploded, creating our world, where did that come from then??? The universe also keeps expanding because a the gigantic blow that occured so many billions of years ago but shouldn't a shockwave, because that is actually the movement of the universe, stop at some point? I mean, if you throw a rock in water, there will be rinkles expanding but if you throw it in a big lake or something the rinkles on the water will not go over the entire surface and what will happen when it stops expanding and. . . .
So I just think that there must've been something that caused our universe to start from scratch, perhaps an other universe that imploded creating o time bend or a white hole that spit everything to here because you can't get something from nothing (unless there really would be a god)…... perhaps I read to much science fiction :DIn the beginning I wrote "there must have been nothing" but perhaps thi might not be the case since we have so little knowledge about the concept of space and time that there simply doens't exist a nothing just the startpoint of time or something????
SO many questions... AAAHHHRRGGGG, where's my pills....
I do believe in Eneru though :DI support the theory that the universe will eventually be pulled back together by gravity, and implode back into a minuscule ball, which will then reignite and become a new big bang.

That is indeed what I meant :D

Religious people tend to answer things that noone can explain atm with it must be gods touch. Back then the moon and the sun were gods etc… even the sky!
-
Of course!
Worship the divine one! -
"Faith is where we sweep away all the challenges to our intellect, and say that God did it".
-
Let me guess.. You are one of those people that think religion and science can't go together?
You do know that there are religious scientists? -
I don't believe in any gods, but my dad always led me to believe that his parents were very devout, creepy and kind of fanatic Christians.
Turns out they just go to church every Sunday and my grandmother's the type of woman that'll say to her husband, "Just what do you plan to do after I kill you?" (for planning to secretly sell off her doll collection)
You just got to learn they're not all like that and who really is fanatic when it comes down to it.
-
I do believe though, that anti-religion fanatics are just as annoying as the religious ones.
So true. So true. Honestly, sometimes they even manages to be more annoying :ermm:.
-
Let me guess.. You are one of those people that think religion and science can't go together?
You do know that there are religious scientists?Nope. I am saying religion, or rather "god created this", is a substitute for things science has not been able to explain yet.
And about "religious" scientists - religion has a record of being a hindrance to science, taking the excuse of blasphemy at every opportune moment. Yet, scientists would continue to hold on to their religion due to a various factors, that may or may not have anything to do with either science or God.
-
I believe religion represents hope and nothing more.
True, because religion tells us that we are special, everything we do is not in vain and there will be an ultimate justice at the end, even if you don´t get it right here, right now.
It takes a pessimistic (or rather realistic) view to not believe in God…
I myself believe in sth like a God ,I admit, maybe because I'm afraid that there is nothing after I die... but I wouldn't call myself religious because I can´t and won´t cope with the "sideeffects" connected to religion. Of course religion has brought progress to the world but a book that tells me to hate gays is not my thing... Nontheless I'm very interested in every religion, no matter if it's Buddhism, Islam or Judaism.
And I would encourage everybody to do the same cause only by learning about the others religion you can understand why they act how they act. -
I believe there must be something out there but not God as in many of you might think of.
In general I'm somewhat respectful when it comes to the beliefs of someone else.
-

If you're busy trying lead a good life for what's to come after - heaven or whatever, then you miss out on the entire experience. Life is only in vain if you feel like it is, your life is as meaningful as you want. What happens when you die isn't really in your control, so why worry about it?
Religion without a doubt teaches many great principles. The Bible for example, I feel like people can gain a lot of wisdom from reading it and interpreting it. The problem is there are too many people who are trying to live the Bible, versus applying it. Religion serves as logic for those who lack it.
-
I feel similar to what Greg spoke.
I however feel that I do not have the right to say whether God does or does not exist. I, being one of the strangest people I know, don't have that authority or right. If God truly does exist, I believe only he deserves that authority.
In the end, only kindness matters.
At least that's my opinion.
-
I completely believe in GOD…And we should be very faithful to him since he gave us the body we use and the soul that moves the body.
Every beginning have an End, And there is always someone who started the beginning...Nothing starts from no where. So God created us and one day he will end us.

I find it almost ridiculous how most religious people don't believe in the Darwin theory. I've asked people and they say, "Do you REALLY think we just evolved from apes?" How can you not believe in evolution? It's pretty damn obvious there's a connection between the fact that humans and monkeys share like 90-something percent of their genes.
Also, I think religion was made by very early people in hard times when they needed some sort of hope. The bible WAS written by men, and they say they were told those teachings from god. Who's to say these men didn't make them up? I also strongly disagree in how people say "How did the universe start?" I respond with "Well, you can't be sure…" and then the other person responds with "Exactly. God made it?" Wait WHAT? Did I miss something there? Also, not saying all religious people make those wide and vague generalizations, just saying its common, and extremely biased and downright annoying. A lot of the stuff in the Bible just seems ridiculous (ex. Jonah in the whale, Moses parting the Red Sea), I mean, it just seems highly unplausible with how the world works today. Some people say that God doesn't perform any miracles after Jesus' birth. Yes, that somewhat explains it I suppose, but who found this out? Were they told by God? And who's to say THEY didn't make that up. I just find a lot of it so hard to believe.
And I hate people who are not tolerant of other religions. I don't believe in any gods, but I just find that terrible. And I really don't see the link between how so many people all claimed to get a message from God, thus creating books like the Bible, The Vedas, etc. Are any of them real? Are there multiple gods? Is only one real? If so which one? There's almost no evidence to backup what people say.
I was talking mostly about Christianity and Catholicism in the beginning of this post, but if once again, I didn't mean to offend anyone, just stating some of my views and confusion with the belief in God.
-
how often do you folks bring up religion in your daily lives anyway?
-

How can you not believe in evolution? It's pretty damn obvious there's a connection between the fact that humans and monkeys share like 90-something percent of their genes.
This is something we recently discussed in my biology class and that's actually a very common misconception about evolution. Humans did not, in fact, evolve from apes, but rather humans and apes evolved from a common ancestor.
Anyway, as an agnostic I don't totally disapprove of religion. There are things about it I like and things about it I don't like. I'm reminded of a Fire Emblem quote (of all things) where they said something along the lines of "though humans may not have much need for gods, they give us something to aspire to".
I also think it's good for people to believe in something. Now of course, I'm not sure that I believe in god, but if nothing else I do believe in the good of mankind. I think ultimately we, as a whole, will do the right thing and in the end we will find what we're looking for, or, more importantly, what we need. And if we already have what we need, we will eventually realize it.
-
Moria I completly agree with you 110%.
Mister Anbu you asked a very good question, if God is the Creator then who creates the Creator.
and XMURADX my question to you is who created your god and when will your god end?
Oh and about the bible, break it down for a second- bi-ble
bi as in "buy"
ble as in "bull"
"buy bull" as in buying bullshit. The bibles main falters is that it is nothing more than an over extended game of telephone. The Bible was penned FOUR GENERATIONS AFTER JESUS.
Also The four Gospels are way out there. Orginally there where 20 something gospels out there. Pope Innocent the I choose the four that had the most in common (matthew, mark, luk and john) and had the rest burned. So what was in those other Gospels?
and another arguement that I have againist the bible is the tale of Jesus, who remarkably has the exact same story as the Eygptian God Horus. The Only faulting detail is the number of disciples Horus had differs while Jesus had his 12.
-
I don't but if I had to pick a religion, I'd pick Pastafarianism because Flying Spaghetti Monster is awesome(and yes I know it's not a real religion but it should be). Anyway, I believe that the idea of a god just doesn't make sense and brings the world nothing but hurt. All people do is use religion and the idea of a god to oppress other people and carry out their agendas. I think it's nice to tell our kids about a magical god and heaven but once they grow up they should be told that it's probably not true. I used to believe but I grew up and realized I didn't need to believe.
-
one thing i have about evolution, if we evolved from apes, how come there are still apes? and since we have apes still, why aren't they still evolving into humans? and what did apes evolve from? and what did those things evolve from? and so on, it eventually would probably trace down to bacteria, but what did they evolve from? either way, something had to start out of nothing, and as for the thread topic, i do believe there is a god, the proof for me is that i pray for him to help me with certain things, and it always turns out fine, maybe I just do better because i think god's got my back, but its worked so far, so i'm gonna keep going with it.
-
Lol at the post above mine.
''That's right, keep your eyes closed, little lamb. Ask no questions'' -
You know… evolution doesn't happen in a lifetime... it takes millions upon millions of years. expecting to see an ape evolve into a human in such a short amount of time is ridiculous.
@SombreroDPaja:
I believe there must be something out there but not God as in many of you might think of.
as for this, i definitely believe in this. Drake's Theorem is one of the those points that I strongly stand beside. Considering the large vastness and infinite proportion of the universe, it's literally impossible that we are the only form of living existence.
oh yeah, and I hate it how some religious people say the universe isn't infinite. what… it's constantly expanding and is immeasurable. I ask them if its measurable and they say yes. I then ask them how big is it, and they say they don't know (wtf?).
-
Let me put it this way:
By choice, I'm the only Pagan in a family of mostly Catholics. My parents and our side of the family were brought up Catholic (and still go by a few of the beliefs) but they aren't fans of organized religion and all of the rules. So, technically, they're Unitarians, but just refer to themselves as Christains and nothing more. I'm just as interested in the Creationist theories as I am Darwin's theories of evolution, but i'm not a firm believer or either one
I'm a Pagan with Wiccan leanings, so i believe that the universe is God, the moon and sun are the Lord and Lady (god and goddess) which control everything under the All (the universe), and everything in nature and the natural world (including humans, since technically we are animals) is sacred and divine.
As for everyone else, you can believe what you want, and i'll believe what i want. I'm very open minded about anyone's opinions on religion and God
@SombreroDPaja:
how often do you folks bring up religion in your daily lives anyway?
i do it quite a bit, actually. i think it's fun to talk about! is that weird? ….. probably :D
-
You have to be mentally hill to believe in god.
-
Oh god( that i don't believe in), Tenryuken is here.
-

I guess you didn't read my post. This is one of the most common misconceptions about evolution. Humans did NOT evolve from apes. Actually, humans AND apes evolved from a common ancestor, which has now died out.
-
I completely believe in GOD…And we should be very faithful to him since he gave us the body we use and the soul that moves the body.
Every beginning have an End, And there is always someone who started the beginning...Nothing starts from no where. So God created us and one day he will end us.
Bullshit.

yep.
@SombreroDPaja:
how often do you folks bring up religion in your daily lives anyway?
ZERO.
I don't believe any humans know God, I think the Bible and whatever spawned it is utter fictional bullshit which was an attempt for a writer to get the #1 spot in highest selling books of all time list.
I believe there's a God, I don't believe in serving God tho. Cause if God intended us to serve God, we would have had that built into our bodies, and thus I wouldn't be rejecting that idea right now. Whatever God is doing, God's doing a fine job, and that's what matters. We are all still here, ain't we?
Someone's looking after our dumbasses.
I don't agree with that there is a god but your post is the best of this tread.
-
Nothing starts from no where. So God created us and one day he will end us.
I think your missing a step in this investigation.
-
one thing i have about evolution, if we evolved from apes, how come there are still apes?
We evolved from a different primate species than the monkeys around today. The species branching off from a common ancestor.
and since we have apes still, why aren't they still evolving into humans?
Why do you expect them to be evolving at a similar rate or in a similar way?
You really don't get evolution huh.and what did apes evolve from?
Earlier forms of apes.
and what did those things evolve from?
A simpler life form than themselves.
and so on, it eventually would probably trace down to bacteria, but what did they evolve from?
Who knows.
Do you think this means the theory falls apart because lol.
either way, something had to start out of nothing, and as for the thread topic, i do believe there is a god, the proof for me is that i pray for him to help me with certain things, and it always turns out fine,
That's not proof of anything.
-
Yes. More Deltron will balance out the idiocy of Tenryuken.

I'm not religious in a traditional sense. I take pieces from Paganism and Buddhism: I believe in an ethos out there that when you die, your soul goes to. It consists of all things natural (elements of nature, like trees, as well as animals, humans included).
Your conscience, in this ethos, dictates where your soul should go to at that point. If you feel you can do the best good as a human again, then you're reborn as human; feel like giving shade? Then you're a tree.
Things like that. I don't really follow 'God' in the monotheistic sense, but I believe that there are deities of the sort that dictate nature and the course of it throughout history. But as for a divine creator? No.
Oh, and I'm watching this thread very, very closely. If it explodes into a wildfire of a flame war, it's locked.
-
"I dont know whether god exists or not,but it'd be better for his reputation if he didnt."-Woody Allen
FTR, I am an atheist,too.
Sorry Jesus. -
But there's also a lot about it which doesn't fly.
How does this counter anything I've brought up?
I specifically said:
I believe anyone who interprets the Christian Bible literally is a fool.
and
If you think some dude walked on water you`re as big a fool.
and oh yeah
I say this as a Christian who gasp doesn`t believe in the Resurrection.
I'm not sure which of those sentences don't confirm that I don't believe that everything happened exactly as documented.
And it's not just the Bible. I've said this before here but I also don't believe some dude sat under a tree just meditating for 40 days.
I don't believe that some dude swirled a spear in the ocean and the shit that dribbled off became a series of islands in the Pacific.
I think every religion as a man-made tool is an imperfect way to describe a perfect being.
But one of the surest signs that exist that prove there is a perfect being is that we collectively understand the word itself, perfect, yet none of us can EVER aspire to it. It is an innate understanding shared among all humans.
Call this being what you will, I've chosen one way to accept its description but I have no issue with any other way of describing it that aspires to improve the way we relate to each other and work together for a better more peaceful world.
It's when idealogues get in the way that shit like the Crusades transpire.

Varies from culture to culture.
Yes? It does. And?
Are not all interpretation strange and weird?
You're not reading my post as a whole. I said there are many strange and different (not weird) interpretations, but the strangest belief being that nothing exists greater than yourself. So yes, much variety exists. But the most out-there belief is that you are the greatest being in the universe.
If there does exist a God, what would He be thinking?
I have no clue what you're trying to say here.
I don't think we're meant to know if there is or is not a god
If we were it wouldn't be called 'faith'.

Oh, and I'm watching this thread very, very closely. If it explodes into a wildfire of a flame war, it's locked.
THANK GOD WE HAVE DAD AT THE PARTY.

I believe that if there is a god, it isn't anything like the concept of god in any religion. We have know way of knowing or understanding at this point, so I consider religion mere speculation.
Now there very well could be an omniscient fellow in the sky who will send me to hell for my blasphemy, but I think that if there is a god, it is a being beyond the grasp of human comprehension, as opposed to the "humanized" Christian god.
I don't believe any human can claim to completely understand the world's nature, its creation, or what created it, which is why I dislike the whole concept of most religions.

"buy bull" as in buying bullshit.Although by itself this is a relatively harmless message on a message board, it's this form of thought that's not only problematic, it's dangerous.
Individuals who make statements like this clearly have never taken time to understand the Bible. I don't care if you were raised Catholic, Methodist, Episcopal, whatever. This shows that you not only reject respecting those around you, but you reject working towards a positively cooperative and sharing community that works for a more peaceful world.
Going to Church or Mass or whatever means bullshit.
If you think sitting your ass in a pew for an hour once a week makes you a better person or a Christian, you're dead wrong.
If you went to Sunday School and think you understand the Bible, you have no clue what's written in the Bible.
In fact, let me just say that the entire concept of Sunday School is FUCKING RIDICULOUS.
Not because of what they strive to teach, but because of HOW they teach it. Instead of looking at the stories and teaching life lessons, they repeat the stories which are freaking kuh-razy! If they looked at the point of these stories, emphasized THAT first, then went back and said, "Look, this is how this idea is presented here.", the entire concept and goal of Sunday School would be much easier for small minds to put in order.
That said, as an adult, if you throw the Bible away without really understanding it, you are a fool. That's not to say everyone should read it or everyone needs to study it. But if you're going to bash it, understand what you're bashing. If you do understand it, there's no way you can say things like the above.
You can criticize it.
You can weed the truthes out from between the fairy tales.
But when you understand what it says, unless you're a wicked human being, you can't say its worthless. And believe me, this doesn't just apply to Christianity. When you look at many other religious documents or texts, despite the fantasy-world crap you'll find strewn across their pages, their goal is to give humanity much needed strength and humility from which great things may be accomplished.

I love how this topic is de-generating into more and more people being asses. Not you, Greg.

These threads are magnets for douchebaggery.
Personally, I think western civilization as a whole, particularly Christians, fail at spirituality and faith. We've become so analytical and prone to believing everything has a logical explanation that few people really care to believe in the extraordinary and supernatural. That is something that's deeply embedded into my life. I've experienced enough crazy stuff. -

and to say that religion has done more good than evil is completely idiotic showing that you have no understanding of religion in the anceint to medivel era. Look at all the wars ever fought in the name of religion. Look at all the money taken from people while guarenting them a place in heaven. Until the 19th religion stopped being this evil supressor and started doing more good in the world. Up until that point religion was only did a small part in doing good (this is inregards to Christianity above other)

thats how i feel, my family is christian. But no one is all super christian like those who are always protesting against dumbshit. My family doesnt hardly even go to church. In the end its all about being a pretty decent person, being kind to others and stuff. You dont need church for that. Now if you like church, go to it. If you dont, you dont have to go.
My grandpa has NEVER gone to church since ive been alive, except for marrages and funerals. And i know hes going to heaven, because hes a good person
Personally the only church ive ever liked moderately is the one in another state where i used to live. Somedays i didnt wanna go, but for the most part it was coo when i was there. The one we go to now (hardly) i dont like at all.
3 hours of the preacher saying the same thing OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Its like i got it the first time you said it 2 hours and 55 mins ago
Then i hate when people are like "you dont like church so your going to hell"
I believe in Jesus and God, so why would i go to hell?

You've assigned the extraordinary to having to be unexplainable or supernatural.
Why can't the logical and explainable be extraordinary?
What about a beautiful landscape? What about a beautiful painting? Tears of joy? A black man with a funny name becoming the president of the united states of america?
What your showing here is a ridiculous intellectual bias toward needing something to be enigmatic or unearthly to be spiritual/amazing.
You're not very spiritual if you can't appreciate the things right in front of your face. The view your showing is actually incredibly western. Incredibly common of the monotheistic religions and their offshoots.
