I don't think oda will involve luffy directly in rescue ace, not to mention in only two weeks his execution is set. we don't expect luffy to be in the level of whitebeard and blackbeard in mere two weeks. but i'm getting signals from the whole slavery and tenryuubito situation. somehow luffy will cause a disturbance in shabondy archipilago ( basically more tenryuubito asskicking and freeing of slaves) that will strain world governments fight against whitebeard pirates.
Chapter 521 "The Hoofs of the Heavenly Dragon" Discussion

for "purposes of entertainment"?
I wonder what Hancock meant by that. Perhaps the nobles pit their slaves against the ones of other nobles.

Very nice chapter, I knew the scan would have way more info than the trans.
I love how Oda connected SA, Kuja Island, and The Fishmen in this one powerful chapter!
Quick question for clarification.
Wasn't it stated that Boa does NOT have the same Haki type Luffy does? I thought that was an error in translation that was fixed?
Anyway,
Looks like Boa is lending Luffy HER ship which means she will most likely sail with him to wherever he wants to go. I am assuming he is going back to SA….why? I don't know since the other SH are probably not there anyway. I wonder what will happen when Hachi meets Boa....although it has not been stated that Hachi was a slave....in the scan it mentioned that not everyone with the Pirates of the Sun mark were slaves, and you can never tell unless they tell you.
Luffy being compared to Tiger Fisher, to me, is a foreshadowing of whats about to happen in the next 15 chapters.
Very very interesting chapter!
-
I like the story going on here, but I can't help but feel that Hancock's change of heart was far too immediate. She kicks a kitten and throws an old lady out the window and suddenly we just forgive her because she used to be a slave? I don't buy it.
Glad it's over though, WHERE IS MY MERMAN ISLANDS EGGMAN, we're 8 chapters overdue!
I'm tempted to join the Fisher-Tiger-Is-Still-Alive bandwagon, but I actually have another stronger feeling that he's going to be related to some future character's backstory.
-
Obviously the Kuja know that Hancock has the power to petrify people - they saw her do it to Margaret and the rest right before their eyes. It stands to reason that she unpetrified them.
They think that if she exposes her back then EVERYONE will be petrified, as part of the "Gorgon's Curse."
Again, this is my point. Everyone on Kuja fears being petrified (turned to stone). If the process can be reversed so easily, why does everyone fear it so much. I'll have to re-read the chapters, but I thought the Kuja stated that once petrified, you were dead essentially. So, if they believe this, why were they not surprised when the three kuja warriors were unpetrified.
-

IMO, I think this transition was just fine. I believe that Boa was lost in her conceitedness until Luffy gave her the reminder of her old slave life which sparked her TRUE emotion, as Elder Nyon said, she was afraid that Boa had turned cold. Boa has personality issues but she is still very much human.
Luffy mentioning the Sun mark and Nyon informing Boa of Luffy's face-breakathon with the Teren is probably what made Boa way more at ease with Luffy. Boa herself mentioned that she cannot trust ANYONE regarding her slave mark because she has tried so so hard NOT to EVER go back to being controlled again, so naturally after a horrible experience like that, she would become the controller rather than the controlled.
What I don't like about Boa at this point is that she is ungrateful towards Nyon when Nyon saved her ass when she escaped the slave encampment…Nyon seems like a Yoda-esque character whom Luffy could very well learn alot from, including Haki.
Sidenote
I wonder what else is in that newspaper that Nyon was reading.....
-
Boa, Luffy and Margaret set sail back to SA im guessing
Boa is gonna go so they dont get buster called or whatever
Margaret because of Luffy and probably debtmy guess
-

I'll have to re-read the chapters, but I thought the Kuja stated that once petrified, you were dead essentially. So, if they believe this, why were they not surprised when the three kuja warriors were unpetrified.
Because the petrification that comes from the "Gorgon Curse" was said to be irreversible. Boa petrified Marg and Co. with her Mero Mero powers which IS irreversible.
Now we know the Gorgon curse is a lie so any petrification done on that island by Boa is irreversible, the Gorgon Sisters do not have this power.
-
Again, this is my point. Everyone on Kuja fears being petrified (turned to stone). If the process can be reversed so easily, why does everyone fear it so much.
What's scary is that Hancock doesn't have to turn you back to normal. And I'd guess that petrification, or more specifically the complete loss of awareness it seems to bring, is as good as being dead as far as the person on the receiving end is concerned.
Not to mention that if someone's careless and knocks you over and a good chunk of you shatters, you'd probably die when brought back anyway.
…
Other than that, while the backstory is appreciated, I too don't care for the 180 on Hancock's part. You have a massive ego, you cross the Moral Event Horizon, fill the protagonist with righteous fury, and then turn a new leaf and are forgiven because you had a crappy past. Right. Even if you're trying to be tough, it does not excuse you from acting like a dick for no apparent reason other than that you can. I think Oda should've spent more time on her defrosting, like another chapter or more.
-
luffy's amazing to see a similarity between those 2 marks, the only thing similar was a circle.
-
not yet but eventualy…
No eventuality. He's already stated that he's not going after Ace, and he's stated his reasons why he's not going to rescue him.
TRUE STORY
-
The curse is feared since Boa doesn't have to change you back if she doesn't want to. Was it actually said in the manga that is was irreversible?
As for Boa's 180. Are people surprised by this. OP is all about redemption and forgiveness at one point. Look at Franky. He stole their money which lead to the Ussop vs. Luffy fight after Ussop eneded up quitting the crew. After the W7/EL fight he's a part of the crew and all is forgiven. Or Robin who was Croc's right hand. Yeah she helped Luffy twice during the Croc fight but that wasn't revealed to the crew when she joined. Aside from Zoro everyone basically welcomed her into the crew the same chapter she wanted to join.
I, for one, actually like how it turned out. I'm not really into the whole Luffy or the SH have to fight every single Shichibukai. Instead this works out better since they now have one thats their ally. It's also not the last we've seen of her. She still has to either fight in the Whitebeard battle or to take part in the World Noble destruction. So her fighting skill can still be shown. It's not like she will never have to fight ever again in the manga since she now allied with Luffy. Anyways like I said in the 520 spoiler thread. By becoming ally with Luffy, she would be alot more forthcoming with information. I don't she how she would've offered backstory on Fish Tiger and the mark if Luffy kicked her ass like everyone wanted. It's also a tidier ending to the arc than say Luffy beating up Boa and stealing her ship.
-

Dude, the girl was ravaged and abused since she was a young girl, what do you expect her to turn out like? Mother Goose?
Like I mentioned before, when going through such a horrible experience, especially dealing with the REAL assholes (The Teren), its natural for one to be the controller rather than the controlled…
-
who are the Teren
-
I don't think Hancock is going to do a complete reversal; just with Luffy. I think she'll still be a bitch and still expect to be excused for her actions because of her beauty. She'll probably just be nicer to Luffy.
Also, how Hancock treats Nyon is actually one of the reasons I don't see her joining the Straw Hats. Hancock can't seem to get beyond the fact Nyon abandoned her country, Nyon who was a leader at one point. Hancock would probably see joining another pirate crew as defecting from her country which is something that should be scorned and cancel out anything positive they might have done.
-

What i ask myself is, do the Kuja-people think that the gorgon curse and Hancocks's ability are the same thing. And do they believe that she can reverse the status either way?
-
i dont think Hancock will Join but her chances of joining have just went up alot for showng a sensitive side
also for being topless in front of Luffy
i hope the anime gets a better angle -
@dirt:
who are the Teren
Tenryuubito, I should have said Tenryu for short but I like Teren…wtvr.
-
@dirt:
who are the Teren
pretty sure he's talking about the Tenryuubito, although because that actually translates to something (sky dragon people? or am I mistaken), any abbreviation should probably retain the actual syllables…
Anyway, my immediate thoughts from this chapter concern two interesting points:
-
How the hell did Marigold gain all that weight, and why? It might seem trivial, but then why would Oda so explicitly create such a noticeable disparity?
-
The idea that the Tenryuubito have high enough quantities of devil fruits that they throw them at their slaves is an exciting prospect. I'm just imagining the crew owning the Marine/CP defense forces in Mariejoa, when all of a sudden said defense forces are passed a box of fruits and transform into an army of terrifying animals/element people.

Spends weeks moaning about wanting to know what's on Boas back
Being a slave is such a small thing, OMG this is going to fast for me stop, couldn't we have had a few chapters with nothing much happening before this backstory?

Well considering the Gorgon curse is based on Medusa. If you saw someone turning to stone you would think it was Gorgon curse related. Espeically since the island is totally in the dark about the Tenryuubito slave mark on their backs. They're completed fooled by it.
They don't seem to be surprised by the 3 girls turning back to normal. Ran even said that the fuzzyness and memory loses is expected. So it looks like the stone reversals have been done before.

Yeah she'll still act the same. She is putting up a front to not look weak and be a total bitch so she won't show her true personality to any other than her sisters or Luffy. A true 180 would be if she basically just stopped acting the way she did pre Luffy. Since that would total destroy her character and ruin her backstory. Only way I could see her dropping her evil act entirely and would be believable is if the Amazon's found out the marks true meaning and didn't care.

1- i think there are 2 reasons
a- Marygold gained an eating disorder problem due the trauma of being slave, remember she is the younger sister
b-must probably the same reason why Sonia is so tall and have a bifid tongue and snake like eyes, the DF, they most be on a half snake half human state and on that pic mary just changed to the full human state to run faster cause she is slim on that way2- there are very few Logias lefts so no element army
and they maybe do have a full animal army
they must have thought, hey snakes are weak and this thing just works on hot ppl so lets give it to them -

@Pirate_King_Sage:

The translation error was on the mastery of the Haki. Some translations mistranslated Hancock by saying that she hadn't even mastered the "King" Haki yet. But actually, the real translation was Hancock saying that Luffy has no control over it.

Considering Kuma has already mentioned Luffy as "The son of Dragon" back in 485. It is actually a really high possibility, in fact I am almost willing to bet he is affiliated with Dragon in some way, whether as an ally or something like how Mihawk was a sparring rival to Shanks at one point. His actions just wreak of ambiguous intentions, and he clearly does not have what is best for the WG in mind or he would have killed all the Strawhats back at Thriller Bark like he was asked.
Why would he have tried to kill Luffy if he is working with Dragon? Think people, think!
-
Pretty nice little chapter. Gave us some background on the Boa sisters and slavery and showed us once again just how nasty the Tenryubito are. I like how Hancock had the little back-and-forth with Nyon, kept her from seeming too soft. Marigold sure put on the weight, guess she got too accustomed to living in luxury after they got back. I also think Fisher King was introduced because we've got Fishman Island coming up at some point in the future and he's probably some sort of legend there, so hopefully we'll get more background on him. I don't think he's really still alive, but I guess you never can be too sure of anything with this manga. I sure do hope the SHs reunite soon.
-
Why would he have tried to kill Luffy if he is working with Dragon? Think people, think!
Maybe you should try thinking for once. If Kuma wanted them too die why on gods green earth did he save them from certian death?
-
Maybe you should try thinking for once. If Kuma wanted them too die why on gods green earth did he save them from certian death?
Not once but twice. Could of killed them all on TB or on SI. SI is a true mystery since Kuma had no reason to be there at all.

Holy shit. I just noticed that.

Indeed, this was a nice chapter. Lots of info on how everything works in the innermost, and darkest corners of the World Government.

Thank you PK Sage. You understood where I was coming from. Now it makes sense.

I think the correct word is "simple" and not amazing as to luffy seeing the similarities. I think luffy saw a circle with stuff around it. LOL!
No rookies will replace any shichibukai. one of the big points of the SA arc was to show the massive difference in levels between rookies and pros… err... pirates :)
-
It's official-Luffy's gay.
He's aged 17-18, seeing one of the most beautiful beings in the world naked, and no response?

He so had a response. Tell me, when you're a male that age, you try to play it cool like it's nothing new. I know I'd do that same thing, I'd be all like, why are you all naked? put some clothes on, but in the back of my head… censored!!
-
He did have a rather…focused look on his face.
-
I remember someone saying, way back when the amazon arc started, that if Luffy didn't get a single "heart eye" moment, it means Luffy's gay.
And it came true.
An entire island full of women, and he's a teenager with a rubber dick+he got a handjob even!
And yet Look at that. Nothing.
-
It's official-Luffy's gay.

Luffy does not agree with your sense of what's beautiful and what's not.

Even in the bathtub scene, luffy's face is covered by the dialogue.
He feels absolutely no attraction to any women, at an age where raging hormones are only natural.
Even in an all-women island… where "that doesn't mean you can't find the odd beauty here"... Even when Oda himself described them as being beautiful, Luffy gave no response.
Luffy is gay.

Luffy is gay.
Or just focused on things he considers more important.
Only true way you can call him gay is if he responds to the sight of a naked man.
-
Kind of disappointed with Boa Hancock. I preferred her character more when she was a heartless bitch who did bad things and got away with them because she was beautiful.
Strangely, I am completely satisfied with how Oda did this. I was really trying to think how this chapter would turn out without making Hancock look weak or making Luffy look like a loser again. Meaning: Either Hancock loses and was a waste, or Hancock kicks Luffy's ass or makes him run away or something. I really like how Hancock was crying last chapter because she was almost found out and the memories hurt, then she recovers and tests Luffy – being a man and all -- and is shocked at his answer, then she hesitantly gives him a chance to explain himself and the likes, then even more hesitantly explains her horrible background. It built up really nice, without really ruining her character. I mean her past alone makes her actions up until this point completely understandable; especially with the additional comment from Nyon, "I was beginning to think your heart was made of ice." It helped us understand that for the past XX years she has been putting on a front of a cold-hearted Empress in order to instill fear in people so she can remain in control of the situation, while at the same time empathizing with her character for the pains she experienced from (likely) the most hated group of people in the series. Mind, she still does have that spoiled controlling attitude with her demands that Luffy hurry up and that Nyon shut up and such. And she is still presumably powerful.
Something I found a little strange: Marguerite, Sweetpea and Alphelandra were released and sent back to the Kuja. For some reason, I thought the Kuja believed the process was irreversible, yet the Kuja didn't seem the least bit surprised about it. Did I miss something?
My take on this is that the Kuja all recognize that the three sisters were "cursed" and now have an eye on their back that, if seen, will permanently turn you into stone. Another side effect of the "curse" is strange powers that they gained: Marigold turning into a snake, Sandersonia turning into a snake, and Hancock freely turning people into stone. Since the Kuja know they each also have a special power from the curse that they can control, I find it understandable that Hancock can – from their perspective -- control and reverse what she herself has done to someone, while the eye on the back would have been a forced and irreversible action any of the sisters might cause given exposure.
Edit: I see someone has touched on this already. Oh well.
He did have a rather…focused look on his face.
Not to mention we all know he was intentionally delaying his answer to where he saw the mark on her back.
-

Luffy is gay.
well he never had a crush on a guy netheir, so I don't think yet that he is gay, plus he didn't like to wear clothes with a girly touch…
-
Now that we got that cleared…
We know that
1. Boa Hancock is beautiful in every sense of the word
2. She was sold as a slave to the world nobles
3. Direct quote from Boa: "The first man I ever saw in my life… To me he was an embodiment of terror itself"***ual abuse... Poor girl.
-
Basicly,I dont think the people on the island would care. But I have a feeling it would interest someone ELSE in comming there. She even states that she wont let anyone see it,and directly after that, without any sidetracking:"Im never gonna be controlled like that again."So theres a chance that if someone like Charloss, always acustomed to having his own way, would demand she be returned to him,THEY would just have to listen to him and try to capture her.
Because, well,it depends on the owner-if hes stil alive-people die and he could have even died during the Siege on Mariejoa. Also, this chapter is nice-I bet Tiger Fisher will play a major part as one of the high tiers of the past-though were not even sure when the Siege ocured,I believe,I mean,6 years after Hancock was 12,that isnt exactely helpfull, considering that
A:Women in OP get to remain the same way for a long time-case in point, Shakky.
B:Her DF could have a hand in altering/conserving her apearance, see Alvida
C:The other sisters dont realy look like we can estimate how old THEY apear.I also think Fisher King was introduced because we've got Fishman Island coming up at some point in the future and he's probably some sort of legend there, so hopefully we'll get more background on him. I don't think he's really still alive, but I guess you never can be too sure of anything with this manga. I sure do hope the SHs reunite soon.
Ad1:We thought that THRICE already:
*After Post E.Lobby
*After Thriller Barl
*During Sabaody (I kinda miss "Shabondy"-I actualy prefered that to the new one, even if its a real referenced word)So who nows how many years were gonna have to wait.Just like with Jimbei.

Looks like Boa is lending Luffy HER ship which means she will most likely sail with him to wherever he wants to go. I am assuming he is going back to SA….why? I don't know since the other SH are probably not there anyway.

I like the story going on here, but I can't help but feel that Hancock's change of heart was far too immediate. She kicks a kitten and throws an old lady out the window and suddenly we just forgive her because she used to be a slave? I don't buy it.
Look at Luffy and Garp-he threw his grandson into pits and jungles as a litle kid.He tried to kill him on orders (though I asume he didnt go anywhere near all out) ,but he stil smiled when they got away.Nyon is a Kuja warior, like she said herself and Hancock probably knows her too well-so when seeing how she bickered with her THIS chapter-it wasnt a "deathly confrontation" bickering, but more of a "piss her off" thing. So I think she just did that to keep up her act KNOWING that she would easily manage, just to piss her off-we were just SUPOSED to get that impression. But note,im not a Hancock fanboy, even when I say this.
Plus, peops, this is the first time we get a definite backstory of sorts for a Shichibukai-we only know Moria had hiss ass handed to him by Kaidou and thats it-be thankfull.
luffy's amazing to see a similarity between those 2 marks, the only thing similar was a circle.
That may be EXACTELY why he noticed it.It isnt "a mystery" (= completely and utterly obvious to everyone and their mother) you know.
