Yeah, Super 17 did feel like a movie. Maybe like Super 13 redux.
I haven't seen many of the movies, but my favorite is The World's Strongest, and Metal Cooler is the worst.

Another World's Strongest lover I see. Man I gotta burn a DVD of that kickass movie just to see Roshi & Goku own bitches again. I still haven't seen all the DBZ movie (probably missed about 6 or 7 of em).
Dragon Ball is widely regarded as the king of mangas.
Enough said.
Like everyone else, I loved Dragonball.
Like some of you, I loved all of DBZ.
But I appear to be the only one here who liked GT. I thought that Bebi and Super 17 were both really cool villains. Yes, you read correctly, I like Bebi. I like how his origins dated back to a time before the whole Saiyan/Frieza conflict. Long ago, the Saiyans used to share their planet with a physically smaller, but much more intelligent race known as the Tuffles. But with the aid of a full moon, the Saiyans wiped out the entire Tuffles race in a single night. This was clearly a window of opportunity that Toriyama never took. As brilliant as a man that he was, he didn't use the Tuffles extinction to his advantage. Thus, the creator of GT used this to his advantage to extend the franchise.
Honestly, I didn't think the Bebi saga was all that bad either. I wasn't great to me by any means, but it was passable. But still, as a whole, I didn't like GT (just couldn't get into it).
The tuffle thing was anime filler, so… he couldn't use it since he never made it to begin with.
@Cap'n:
Metal Cooler is the worst.
Movie 4 (Slug) is MUCH MUCH worse. By FAR. Movie 3 (Tree of Might), Movie 9 (Bojack), and Movie 11 (BioBroly) were also pretty bad.
Movie 7 (Android 13)is my fave, followed by 12 (Janenba), and then 5 (Cooler). 13 (Tapion) is also fucking awesome. I liked Deadzone a lot too, and the dub for Movie 2 was EXCELLENT, if nothing else solely based on Goku's "KAIO KEEEEEEEEEEEEN!" Actually, I enjoy watching the first two dubbed IMMENSELY.
If you take a step back and look, from beginning to end, it has very severe flaws. But hey, it's a lot of fun and is almost definitely the king of all shonen, so I wouldn't say it's over or underrated.
Yeah. And I admit that there's a lot of things I could complain about DB but I still don't. For example slowness (in anime), the not so great plot and so on.
It's still very funny to watch ad unlike some people I love its animation style because (like in One Piece) it's original and unique. And I also prefer that males look like males and females like females. I have seen so many animes where I can't even see the difference between men and women (except breasts) because they are all so god damn feminine.
I don't think Dragonball is underrated. I like Dragonball from the beginning to the Frieza arc, the Cell arc was okay but the Majin Buu arc was dry so theofore the Majin Buu arc is the weakest arc of the series.
Just like Star Trek TOS, it was great in season 1 and 2 but season 3 was labeled "turd season" so Majin Buu is the turd arc so I dislike that arc.
Theres also the entire Goku being reverted back to a child like he was in the begining of the series.
I personally found that to be a fantastic concept, ironic of all things for the strongest "man" in the world. It's only a pity GT didn't play out the idea to its fullest.
I agree, GT was awful although I did enjoy the Super 17 arc (I in the minority on this)
I liked it too, I think Super C17 is one of the coolest villains, but yeah as others said it'd probably have been better for an OAV and they could have scrapped the rest of GT.
They made it to milk it for every possible reason, why would they shettle for an OVA?
Wasn't the only reason GT was continued past Bebi was because of the Final Bout video game? Either way, episodes 63-64 especially the montage at the end of 64 almost makes up for all the nonsense that was GT.
When it comes to GT, I guess I'm one that can't stand what a lot of people liked. As interesting as having a rival race try to get revenge on the Saiya-jins, Bebi was a dumb villain and the whole thing was a build up to another SSJ form we never needed. I didn't like how #17 was tampered with the Super 17 saga (not to mention all those villains coming back just to be barely tapped and killed by even the weakest of characters…), and as interesting as the negative effects of the Dragon Balls was, I didn't like a lot of the stuff in that saga either. (great, lets have Vegeta get another power up for another stupid fusion) Though I do admit: I like the ending with Goku just leaving the world to itself and going off with the dragon...
Did anyone other than me notice that GT should have never began? How can the Dark Star Dragonballs exist if Kami doesn't exist anymore?
I thought the Black Star DBs were created when Piccolo and Kami were one. Because Piccolo re-fused with Kami, that life form was "revived", reviving the DragonBalls.
@The:

Like I said, I haven't seen that many. But, when I saw parts of Tree of Might a while ago, I remember it being really boring and godawful. I never saw a lot of Slug, but i don't think I minded it that much (maybe because it was more or less a throwback to Piccolo Daimao). I've never dared to see Bio Brolly, but it's definitely terrible. Any movie starring Goten and Trunks has to be shit.
As for Bebi, no matter how interesting the "tuffle" thing might be, he still felt like a shitty attempt to make another Boo, to me at least.

Weren't they created by Piccolo after he split off from Kami?
If that's right, then they should have turned to stone with the death of the original Piccolo.
In the event that Ma, Jr. being alive was enough to keep them from turning to stone, then they still should have turned to stone when Piccolo fused with Kami like the regular Dragon Balls did. Piccolo was the template for the fused Kamiccolo (or whatever you want to call him), but neither of them really exists anymore. Dende had to recharge the originals, remember? So the BS (how appropriate) Balls should have turned to stone as well.
Ultimately, the whole concept is stupid. How in the hell did people even know how the Black Star Dragon Balls even worked in the first place? If I recall, they're supposed to be more powerful than the originals. How does that work when the original Piccolo was apparently weaker than Kami?

haha you gotta admit, Bio Broly was pretty damn funny, despite how bad it was XD The fact that chibi Trunks moons him and flips him the bird XD that was always amusing
Yeah, Bio Brolly was just one big craptastic movie with comedy thrown everywhere.
Dragonball ruled!
The reason Dragonball Z is hated is because of the dragged on fighting scenes and the repeating plots.
Dragonball GT was made purely for money and the aim was to make Goku the strongest again. At the end of DBZ, you were left to think Uub trained to be stronger and Goku but when GT came along his ass was kicked in EVERY fight he was in.
@pirateneko:

BioBroly was indeed damn hilarious. But that was about it, unfortunately.
DragonBall GT was AWFUL! I hated the part where Goku and Vegeta became enemies again, and when I found out that even Bulma had turned out against Goku i stopped watching the damn anime.
Would I be correct in stating that the chance of Toriyama doing a new one-shot DBZ manga is 001.00% (one can dream)?
Anyways, most people are in agreement here, GT= BAD (with very few redeeming qualites).
what was so bad about Bojack? i thought it was one of the better movies, i mean that, brolly 1 and the future trunks special (along with maybe brolly 2 and the rebirth of fusion) were the only ones worth seeing.
I always thought the Trunks OVA was really dull. Then again, that's how I feel about Trunks in general.
That's funny, because the only time i ever felt any emotion other than "wow, that attack was awesome" (well, its not really an emotion but you guys know what i mean) was in that OVA. Gohan dying was actually sad, as opposed to Krillin's death or vegeta's or piccolo's or whomever
If it were about a character other than Trunks, and with more interesting villains, then I might agree.
yeah, i guess. I mean trucks really has little impact on the series other than as a warning from the future. I was more sad about the situation and how close gohan was to trucks and stuff. Im sure if you had another character in there, then it would be more universal
I liked movie 9 a lot if I remember (but I haven't seen it in many years - old VHS fansub). But then again, I also liked movie 3, so what do I know. Yeah, it dragged, but I liked the hencmen, despite how minor they were. And Tenshinhan was in movie 3 and 9.
those old VHS fansubs were gold back in the day. What became of that/those group(s)?
@gilrules2000:

I dunno. I just know that every single comic book shop ever sold them. Also, that's how I first saw the JoJo OVA's. The local comic book store had a whole rack full of VHS fansubs for all kinds of stuff.
You know with recent manga revelations (not saying what for those that don't want spoilers), it sort of made me think: as many times as Dragon Ball had villains that wanted to "take over the world". While Toriyama used the old standby several times, I do find it interesting that he's able to adjust it each and every time he did making it "slightly" fresh:
-Pilaf: Amazingly, he's the only one that wants to rule the world just for the sake of his own "world ruling" ego. He never said why…probably since the series was just starting and he was just the generic villain of the moment
-Red Ribbon: Now here's an arc I liked: find the Dragon Balls, tell your subordinates of various powers and strength this is a world ruling operation..then reveal your true intentions as something silly or with nothing to do with the plot (Red wants to be taller). Those were the good old days.
-Piccolo: While he seemed a bit more conventional and more wanted revenge at first, I liked his style when he did take over: force everyone into his rule...and if they didn't like it, he or his subordinates would kill them/destroy their land. Not to mention that prior to the insanities of the powers and such to come, he actually succeeded in his world conquest bid...in a way.
-Saiyans/Frieza: While we all know this is where things get more galactic, I did like Raditz's explanation of Frieza's operation: find planets with the right "resources and such", eliminate all resistance (AKA: kill any current inhabitents), then sell said planet to the highest bidder. With this matter on a much more universal scale, Toriyama is able to show how more devastating the battle has become by the time of the Vegeta battle..and later with Frieza, who does something similar to Namek..but more for the Dragonballs than for any use to anyone who would want this planet.
-Cell: I think it was just an afterthought to him after becoming so powerful: why not rule the world since I am the greatest being?
-Buu: Well...Buu is so chaotic and destructive that who cares at this point.
I thought Cell wanted to destroy the planet.
@Cap'n:
I thought Cell wanted to destroy the planet.
I'm pretty sure that he was planning on destroying the planet after the Cell Games ended. I seem to recall that he was planning to wander around afterwards and slaughter everything in the entire universe since killing Goku would have left him without a purpose.
That might just be my imagination though because Toriyama followed up the Cell Saga with Majin Buu, who had come quite close to doing just that…
Still, it seems like something that Cell would do. He was a bit of a prick after all.

Yeah, its sort of tough to figure out Cell's ultimate motive. He was so obsessed with an ultimate opponent that destroying the Earth was merely an afterthought.
Cell's big plan was to travel through the universe to strike fear into people's hearts and blow shit up. He didn't really care about world domination at all.

That was merely an afterthought though. He sort of decided on it towards the end after seeing how easy everyone on Earth (even Goku and Gohan…well prior to SSJ2) were. But of course, Toriyama had to build him up as a bigger threat than Frieza...so that's why he probably added on the "blowing up planets" part.
Best manga ever. The comedy in the begninning was GOLD.
There was no Dragonball z part in the manga. The anime just changed its name after Goku grew up but the manga did no drag on at all. I was suprised how quick everything happend.
Little Trunks and Gotenks were the best characters ever. And them fighting the android while standing on each other was very funny to me.
Gohan became a pansy when he grew up.
The series died when frieza did
=(
The series should've ended when Cell was beaten, since like… it was pass to torch to Gohan to ensure the earth was safe.
This will probably cause some unnamed DB fans to track down my computer and to hack it for good but whatever: I don't like DragonBall and actually think it's overrated instead of underrated. DON!!!
The comic has it's merits though but it hasn't stood the test of time nearly as well as, for example, Akira has.
true, but dragonball z set a precedent for all of the shounen manga to come out since in shounen jump. In other words, its not the actual story or what not that should be appreciated but the kind of manga that it is.
Personally I don't know if "Akira" stands a test of time. If we're talking about the movie, its status as a "classic" and pretty good animation are all it has.
Yeah, I actually saw Akira a while back and all I could think was, "This is supposed to be the penultimate in anime?" It's sorely overrated; I think it merely stands out because for most people it was their first exposure to anime. While there's nothing wrong with that, it's far from the best anime out there, and I would say aside from its status as an "intro anime" it doesn't really stand the test of time at all.
Then again, my first exposure to anime was Ninja Scroll, so there you go. XP
Anyway, yes, back on topic, I echo many other sentiments here. The show is quite good, but the fights are a bit long, and I was disappointed the whole plot thing of Gohan having the potential to be the strongest character was more or less abandoned. It isn't by any means bad, I think that it's just people have moved on to bigger and better things, and somehow it's just become the "in" thing for newer fans to bash DBZ I suppose (the same is true of Pokemon).

And that's why I do agree with Yoska about it being overrated, to an extent, and that the Akira manga holds up much better, since it gets by on what it has more than what it means.
It's a shame Barnes & Noble only did the first volume in hardcover, because it was a hell of a deal….
@Cap'n:

I don't remember the movie all that well anymore but the comic, which I was speaking of, can still twenty years later beat a good half of it's modern day counterparts. The story stays coherent all the way through and it actually feels like the author had planned everything before starting to draw the series which is rather rare (this is largly thanks to it's short length, I guess). When it comes to cyberpunk, something like Eden: It's an Endless World just can't do a better job with the genre than what Akira already did. Bucc already said it better than I ever could, but that's what I feel Dragon Ball is missing.
I've always wanted to read Akira, but I don't want to buy 10 or however many phone book sized volumes..
Akira's one of my favourite manga, but I'll never praise it for the storytelling, as I have to say that on a whole was just pretty poorly done. The plot was great, the storytelling wasn't. Distorted and uneven as hell, in my opinion. I can think of a whole bunch of modern titles better handled, with a great deal more of consistency to boast. Then again, I don't think quality is bound by age. I don't see the point in the phrase ''standing the test of time''. A good story is a good story.
Ontopic, I love Dragon Ball. I can't honestly say its ''good'', but like many said, with the right mindset it can be enjoyable as hell, and that's all it needs. The main reason I love the series so much though, I admit, is pure simple nostalgia. When I was a kid, the series was godlike. I'm not liable to forget that anytime soon. A simple picture of Goku can be overwhelmingly nostalgic, and that's a pretty special thing.
If you want to read a great cyberpunk manga give Gunnm a shot. It blows Akira out of the water, and it's shorter.
