I find it funny that people are still clinging to the hope that someone new will join. My feeling is this: Oda was playing with you.
Merry is one of the crew. Thus, merry is obviously the crewman leaving.
Sogeking is the new one that joins.
It doesn't make sense any other way. Pauly won't leave iceburg and Franky won't leave his franky family. Let the dream die. You guys are worse than Usopp.

Realy great chapter and a worthy farewell to the flying lamb, something I was realy missing. The only thing I can't see is why they burned the jolly Roger with it. Isn't it supposed to be more worth to a pirate than the own life? I'm waiting for translation now.

Fairly illogical for Franky….an incredibly wanted criminal right now....to return to his group who have just escaped government scrutiny by being reported as dead, especially when he already thinks thier dead.
This isn't about dreams, its about basic common sense setting the character up for this departure ahead of time.

Now the speculation about the new ship can truly begun, since now it's 100% sure Merry wont come back again.
I was also happy about when they explained how Merry came back..And damn you Oda for taking a break now.

Yeah, let's conveniently forget the fact one of the most important themes of this saga was that they needed a real shipwright because Usopp wasn't one, and their lack of a quality shipwright was responsible of one of their friends' "death" (spare us). They're on the island with the best shipwrights in the world, it's perfectly logical for them to leave without one!!!!

Otherwise I agree. With the strawhats he will have a new home, a possibility of realising his dream for a ship to sail around the world (or something like that) and he's bonded pretty well with them already. So the possibility is very real.
But after this chapter I just got some strong wibes that says "Iceburg might join." Can't explain why, though.

I'm gonna call Merry a "she" for now, since boats are usually referred to in the feminine. She uses "boku" for a pronoun, but "boku" is often used as a genderless pronoun, even though it's technically male.
sniffle It's been a while since manga brought tears to my eyes. But this . . . . was absolutely beautiful. In that sad way. In the last pages there Merry apologizes for not being able to carry them further, how it wanted to go on more adventures with them. Luffy says that they're the ones who are sorry, for putting Merry through all the stupid stuff they did to it. But Merry says that she was happy. As she burns away she thanks them for treasuring their time together, and that she was truly happy.
Can there BE a better send-off for a ship? I dare anyone to complain how OP has no death in it now.

This chapter ranks along with Robin's escape from Ohara as one of the saddest of this arc.
It would probably be in their best interests to burn the Jolly Roger since they're wanted by the World Government now. They could probably use a new flag as a new identity.
Franky's a champ. Real men aren't afraid to cry. XD
Hopefully Usopp will grow the balls to ditch the damn mask. I'm tired of seeing Aldrich slam him. I'm not a fanboy of his, but I would like to see him own a person or two. Hopefully the new ship will have some nice ranged devices inside it he can use to practice. He'll need it against Van Auger.
I called it wrong, so long ago. I guess this needs to be changed.

So it was Iceburg who repaired GM a bit, and somehow GM moved by itself towards Enies Lobby, right? The Klabauterman (spelling?) is more alive than I thought!

And no chapter next week? It's going to be a boring week then...
And lastly, Full Moon Day is around the corner, so I think Oda made Eneru's mini story now means he is celebrating it also!

You know, the snow effect was perfect, but I thought about it, and what would make it even more tragic is if something happened similar to when Bon-chan gave his "Okama Way" speech just before his ship started burning. When the Sakura bloom, it's a sign life has begun again…
Not to say this ending wasn't great, but still... Sakura petals falling from the sky would have been amazing.
And uh, Elric, do you know anything about Horses? A broken leg cannot heal on a horse. Period. End of story. If a horse breaks its leg, you put it down.
It mainly has to do with the fact that a horse cannot rest in a position where the leg will heal properly. Horses sleep standing up, they eat standing up, they pretty much do everything in an upright position. A horse breaking leg is like a ship breaking a keel. It's unfortunate, but it's impossible to fix.
They are, however, working on artificial limbs for horses. That's pretty much the only solution. There's little muscle in a horses's leg, and the horse WILL NOT sit still long enough for it to heal.

Damn! and this was a serious chapter, this post made me laugh. Anyway I was waiting for this moment for GM to Finally get her well deserved rest beyond the blue seas. I agree that when this chapter gets animated It would make grown men cry. I mean the ep 277-78 almost made me teary eyed.

You're absolutely right. A fracture has a chance of healing. But completely broken? The horse is done, pretty much.

HA! I called it! Merry's finest moment and what a way to go, helping its crew out of danger one last time. I bet Ussop is regretting what he said to Luffy now especially after Luffy apologized to Merry for what they put her through, am glad she went out happy and it kinda makes sense they burned the Jolly Roger along with her, as a true member of the crew rather just go out like a regular ship. Still -sniff- it was fun while it lasted for ol Merry Go, she shall be missed.
