@The:
I actually didn't mind it that much. It may be because I've read a few light-shedding theories and quotes that foreshadow Necron…
See, I didn't think that it was that much of a shock really either. There seemed to be plenty of hints to me that Kuja was getting his ideas, powers, and that army of dark monsters from somewhere else.
I'm also pretty sure that the various elemental bosses made several indirect references to Necron.
It was nowhere near as idiotic as the revelation that the entire cast happened to know each other in the past, but forgot. I admit, my loathing of this plot twist is likely exaggerated because I hated the wussified nature of FF8, which was way, waaaay too easy for it's own good.
I mean, Kuja doesn't live up to the tradition of the final boss being a huge, twisted monster.
Agreed. Kuja was way too much of a pushover to be a final boss, especially if you'd beaten Ozma or had even had a random encounter with the Yans. Shock and a fully leveled Dragon Crest alone made Kuja their bitch, tossing a high level Zidane and any other character in there made the battle a complete joke. Necron was at least enough of a bastard with his status changing magic that I barely beat him.
