Chapter 1130: The Accursed Prince
-
-
"Another official child". Is this saying that both are official or that just Loki is official?
It feels like it is saying both are.
-
Them talking about how Loki absolutely cannot be released and then cutting over to Luffy right in front of him made me laugh. Of course he would be. Oh, Luffy...
-
-
Yamato's cover story is still going slow. So far we have mostly got updates on several Wano characters, but I feel things are about to start happening now.
-
Last chapter I was questioning the choice of Oda making characters question if they were in Elbaf too often. I thought it would diminish the reveal, but this chapter handled it very well by slowly building up to the island's full view, instead of showing it right away.
-
It's really cool to finally see Goldberg and Gerd in the main story. Interesting that Oda kept Hajrudin and Stansen, the two members the crew already was familiar with. I'm looking forward to seeing Stansen meeting the crew again.
-
I was sure the crew wouldn't get updated bounties. First, because it's too soon after Wano. Second, because they did nothing in Egghead that wasn't fit of their current status. At best, only Luffy should get an update. The Giant Warrior Pirates, however, do deserve the raise.
-
And Vivi manages to slip a secret message to the crew. I wonder if there's more in the paper to give them any tasks to do. Robin thinks it's familiar because she was hidden in the Merry when the crew showed the marks to proper send their goodbyes to Vivi.
-
Loki is revealed and... have we seen "him" before? Back when OP reached its 100th chapter, Oda drew four future villains' concepts for Jump. So far, we only had Boa Hancock identified as one of them. But there's also a giant with a horned helmet and an axe... hmmm...
- Anyway, we can finally say Elbaph arc has started, after two decades of waiting! And it's starting strong, the story can go several ways from here. So much potential!
-

It feels like it is saying both are.
Yeah, having the full line now, the "legitimate king's child" is just continuing from the previous balloon with the "Elbaf's other" (エルバフにもう一人正式な王の子), so it seems Hajrudin is a true/official/legitimate son as well.
-
Glad that more Elbaf women are finally starting to enter the Elbaf arc. Gerd is a nice start to that.
-
Vivi is totally sending the Straw Hats a message
Also Loki’s silhouette back at Whole Cake Island made me think his character design would be goofy like Moria or Weevil but I’ll take this bad ass design any day
Also his eyes are covered make me think his devil fruit has something to do with his eyes, never trust covered eyes in anime
Also I hope Urouge shows up this arc
And yeah with Loki here as a villain I totally expect some doomsday threat called Ragnarok
And Dorry and Broggy getting bounty increases is awesome, now there’s 23 characters with a billion or over bounties I believe (obviously more we don’t know about yet)
I still think this is the arc where the event the narrator mentioned the grand fleet would be part of that would shake the world will happen
-
As it was established in W7, Luffy has a keen eye for the final villain of the arc, he always knows who he has to fight. In two weeks we’ll see if he trusts Loki or not. I don’t see him releasing him if he suspects Loki can threaten his friends. On the other hand, Loki is the god of deception, so he can always dupe Luffy into freeing him.
-
I have to applaud Oda. Just a few months ago, I felt pretty indifferent towards the prospect of an upcoming Elbaf arc. Now, after the last few chapters and this one in particular, I'm fucking hyped! This is how you build up anticipation! And those amazing two doublespreads at the end of the chapter...wow is all I can say.
Vivi using the friendship X sign all the way back from the Alabasta arc to contact the crew gave me goosebumps as well. One Piece must seriously be the most rewarding case of long-term storytelling ever.
-
@Chams-0 I can be wrong and it is about what you're saying, but I don't think it is just about if Loki is a good person.
I think this may come down to if Luffy thinks some should be free to do as they please.
As weird as Road was, Luffy still seen his treasure (his block country) as something Road put effort into and thought enough to tell the cat to be careful to not destroy it too much.
If Luffy passed by Kaido as he was about to jump off the cloud island, he would probably just see him as insane.
I just don't think Loki has to trick or dupe Luffy here. Luffy can either just talk to him and leave him be or consider Loki being detained as unnecessary and free him.
-
-
I see a lot of people comparing Loki’s situation to Zoro’s introduction, but they forget Luffy didn’t free Zoro immediately, he first judged Zoro’s character. It was only after talking to Zoro, seeing Zoro eat Rika’s riceball and finally learning the truth from Rika and Helmeppo that Luffy decided to free him.
-
What an amazing chapter. The "pre-arc" is over and we've entered the real one (I suppose the next chapter will be called "Adventure in the Land of the Giants").
Good to know that Rodo is an outlier in Elbaph (really funny that this spelling is canon, I do like the other spelling more, however I always found the Elbaf - Fable thing a bit stupid, so I'll take it).
Piper is cute! (although it's obviously still gonna be huge compared to humans).Chopper callback to the rope ways used back in Drum Island is good stuff, feel like Oda's been getting really good at naturally inserting these recently.
Of all the theories I cannot believe that bounty inflation ended up becoming true. It's of course a simple way to adjust their perceived strength to current levels, but I still would've never thought we'd get inflation in One Piece.
Vivi using the X to send a message to the Straw Hats through the papers is genius. It's the kinda thing you don't see coming (well, at least I didn't), but it makes so much sense. Also explains why Oda split the Straw Hats into those specific groups.
The one thing that's a bit weird in this chapter is Brogy's line about Hajrudin being a part of their crew. Hajrudin is 81 years old and Dorry and Brogy were obviously on Little Garden for a 100 years, so unless i'm misunderstanding this seems like a mistake.
The Loki-spread looks great, and his backstory is already very intriguing, but the highlight of the chapter is definitely the Elbaph spread. Absolutely stunning, one of the coolest looking locations in the series. The gigantic sword, the rainbow (bifröst?), cannons in all directions, the waterfalls...and it's so fucking huge. I hope Oda utilizes this setting better Onigashima, which also looked great during the intro spread, but then all of it took place on the barren rooftop or the boring inside. Wano I would say he did okay, Kibi and Hakumai were underutilized for sure, but the others were fine I guess
One thing I'll say though, I'm already a bit annoyed by people in other spaces trying to predict the arc by reading Norse mythology lol. Reminds me of Kabuki/Momotaro during Wano and Alice in Wonderland for WCI. Oda takes inspiration obviously, but he most likely won't copy something one-to-one. That being said, if you are in Germany or France (maybe it's available in other countries too idk) there is a really cool documentary series on arte.tv on the viking myths right now. I think looking at Oda's references as inspiration to educate ourselves about subjects we'd maybe otherwise not have any interest in is more productive than using them to predict the story.
-
For six years I've imagined Loki as fat chubby majestic royal giant with a crown on his head
This is such a radical departure from his silhouette & his original concept early on for Jump's
his design is good, but quite unoriginal, someone took a lot of existing characters and smashed them in a blender
I really wanted the one in my head with the most odd physical proportions possible rather than this
making him thin is a betrayal, we did not agree to this. unless he's been starved due to imprisonment thus it's acceptable
I really wanted Elbaph to look unique as an island but as predicted it's heavily inspired and unoriginal
The size of that sword has to be an error, I know Oda is unreliable when it comes to this matter but it has to be a mistake
Look at the size of the castle below which is probably 10x taller than the giants at its doors, the same castle is like 50x smaller than the colossal sword impaled on the island
Maybe it's not a mistake, if so then I'd like to predict the special DF that is passed down to the royal family has something to do with it
It makes no sense that all giant warriors unite together against a youngster, He must be abusing the shit outta the legendary fruit to cause them all trouble just to detain him!
Now to think his brother got one shotted by Luffy's pre TS move is sad to think about. the gap between them is too big.
Obviously Oda will try to patch it up and make Hajrudin stronger but it doesn't change the fact that he's a weak giant.
Also working for Buggy of all people, this character is beyond repair.
I'm excited for the upcoming releases, as for the new arc i guess not much is new, new arc = new tyrant. It's the One Piece usual.
It certainly gives the feeling of a long arc shaping up, I hope for 30-45 length instead of 65+
two week break is gonna be rough, I hope it'd be worth it. btw I'm very happy that Jarul is still alive!
-
There's probably more to Vivi's message than just the picture. The picture works to send an "I'm here, I'm alive" message, but is she saying "I'm fine, no need to worry" or "I'm in danger, need rescue"? Vivi likely left some clues in the news' text as well.

This has crossed my mind as well. I think it would be awesome if Loki escapes, proves to be super-strong but he's actually starving. So at some point he has a big feast and gets chubby but also 100 times stronger.
-
My impression was the roar Luffy heard was Loki's stomach, so there's something that could relate to that.
On an unrelated not, for those finding new excitement with One Piece after this chapter, I really suggest watching this week's anime special episode (One Piece Fan Letter). It's pretty much a love letter to the series and the SH.
-
I agree with Hideous. For now, Loki is boring in design and looks like a mashup of existing characters.
On Twitter, someone posted Loki, Kata, Enel, Kaido etc as great designs. While I see some as okay, I prefer Queen, Wapol, Teach, and Orochi type designs. They feel more like One Piece.
-
I was also surprised he wasn’t fat and goofy looking
But honestly the characters design is bad ass enough that I give it a pass
That introduction was pretty damn cool too
-
Kalifa was right, all those years ago: Nami does have gigantification powers!
If we are complaining about character designs I think we should talk about Gerd and Nami-face syndrome. It doesn’t help that Oda gave Nami the exact same braids as Gerd. -

Come to think about it, it's not even the crew part. They really shouldn't be talking about Hajrudin like they know him. They've probably barely interacted with Dorry and Broggy being gone for so long and Hajrudin being an active pirate.
-
@Sengokusgoat The line about the crew is the only one that's said by Brogy, Kashi says the part about him being the son of a king and he and Oimo would've been in Elbaph for the first the 30 years of Hajrudin's life. We don't see them interact, but they are in the village together during Big Mom's flashback.
-
What a place to leave off before a two week break. As expected, we have actually arrived in Elbaph and man, the art is worth the years of build-up. This is also the ninth chapter of volume 111, making it the book's first possible stopping point. It would be a short volume, with a number of reduced page count chapters, but wouldn't this make an impression to go out on? I'd definitely want to get the next book after seeing it. And it would be nice and neat on Oda's end to finish a volume then take the break to plan out the next few.
I'm glad to get a little bit more of the other half of the crew's post-Egghead outfits as we establish they'll be joining the main plot on Elbaph soon. The cutaways to this group also reveal the purpose of splitting the crew the way Oda did - building tension over Vivi's status a little longer by keeping the group that would recognise her message from reading the paper. It's interesting the acknowledgement of how drastically Luffy's appearance changes in Gear Five that there's even a question of whether he usually has a mark on his arm (and it only takes a cursory review of any Egghead chapter to be absolutely sure he does not) but Robin gives us the info we need to fill in the gaps. I feel like Oda could have gone a little further in emphasising the blur on the arm against the clarity of the mark in his illustrations, but the point still gets across.
And I do love the Alabasta callback (and a 3D2Y one) all these years later, making such an iconic moment important to the plot in a way that feels really natural rather than a pure nostalgia shoutout.
It's also fun officially getting inflation as a justification for the extreme bounty inflation you see with the old generations vs the new. That's the kind of thing you usually see pitched as a headcanon to fill in the gaps, but here it is.
Getting back to the main group, we're introduced to the real Elbaph and it impresses on every front. The scale and ideas - the island built up in the tiers of Yggdrasil, the non-lego version of Bigstein Castle, that steep, enormous rope bridge. The worldbuilding detail of the slats being too far apart for human travellers (Luffy proves he's a Crash Bandicoot 1 vet by walking on the railing instead) and the artistic detail in the braided ropes holding it up. Finding out the apparent columns seen in the sky in previous glimpses of the island are waterfalls trailing from the higher branches. This is beautiful. We don't even see the top of the tree, so it's possible there's more above. But there are no waterfalls cascading down into the highest level we can see, so it's unlikely a hypothetical third tier would be as densely (if at all) populated as the ones below. Oh, and there's also the name, I guess. I was never much of a believer in the theory that it was meant to be 'fable' spelled backwards for some story reason - it's just never been Oda's style of wordplay, especially being in English, and I think if it was an intended reading Oda would have provided the romanisation earlier so both Japanese and English readers could figure it out, and if it was that important the correct spelling would probably have been provided to translators and merch producers so we wouldn't have a replica log pose that reads 'Elbuff' - but I did always think the Elbaf spelling was more aesthetically appealing. But canon marches on.
The Elbaph lore and culture is starting to build. The land perhaps stands rudderless - we know that King Harald is dead and neither of his two known official sons has been able to ascend to the throne. Loki for obvious reasons. Hadjurdin for less obvious ones, but he was talking on Dressrosa about wanting to be king of the giants. Is there a third son, official or otherwise, who's taken charge? An usurper? A queen regent? Or are either the warriors or Elder Jarul simply keeping the peace until the issue of succession can be resolved?
Then there's Loki himself. Very, very cool design on this one, and I have no idea whether I want to see it put to use more as an ally or as a villain. The ambitious assassination of his father, false Sun God angle and talk of the end of the world sure give off a villainous vibe (and that Doflamingo tongue has a bad association) but that's only what we've been told. There may be more to the story about Harald, more to the role of Sun God and the idea that it will destroy the world (remember the double meaning of Luffy's Fishman Island prophecy?) and layers to Loki's personality not yet shown. When he gets free (because obviously he has to) I'll be waiting to see if his actions back up or contract what we've been told.
To fixate on one little part of his appearance, what's with the blindfold? And the rendering in the last panel revealing the shape of his eye? I would put down a reasonable bet that the devil fruit he stole gives a power somehow related to or activated via the eyes. On the other hand, the loss of an eye is a very Norse mythology thing to include. The missing rendering gives the feeling of an empty socket, and we are still due an important character with an eyepatch. Or it could just be intended to imply Loki is using Observation Haki or some some other advanced sense to "look" at Luffy through his blindfold. I can never be sure how far to overthink these kinds of small details.
This is a great chapter that sets the tone for a great arc, and I can't wait to see what's in store when Oda comes back from his well-earned research break. Full arc Egghead review for real next week.
-
@cavendishsama I think the matter of Hajrudin being in "Dorry and Brogy's crew" is just semantics. Jarul and the other elder were once the captains of the Giant Warrior Pirates. Dorry and Brogy took command at some point, and with them gone and the crew disbanded Hajrudin was forming a new Giant Warrior crew to replace the old one, so it's a generational thing (they are all "the same crew" because one suceeds the other) and not really Hajrudin being even once a crewmate of Dorry and Brogy.

Hmmm, I was also thinking about the covered eyes and questioning if Loki may be the fabled eyepatch character we'd meet near the end of the story. I had not noticed the faint eye shape behind the blind fold, but now that you mentioned it, I think the eyepatch hypothesis may have been strengthed.
-
@Deicide its covering both eyes though isn’t it? Not exactly an eye patch if it covers both eyes? I’m still dying to meet this fabled eye patch character, he or she is obviously very important to Oda
-
@Shiebs Yes, both his eyes are covered, but he may have lost only one eye, so when the blindfold is removed he puts on an eyepatch.
Why the blindfold over an empty socket? Same reason Garp used to have a dog hat or Yamato had a hanya mask: for a reveal.
As for something interesting: in mythology, Odin sacrificed one of his eyes to drink of a spring of cosmic knowledge. Maybe Loki did something similar in One Piece.
-
@Deicide I guess we will see, for some reason I always assumed the eye patch character would be an ally to the Straw Hats, idk why but that’s always how Oda’s comments on the subject made me feel, which I don’t think Loki is
-
Loki does feel like a character Oda had in mind for a long time (all the way back to Little Garden at least).
-
@King-Cannon I feel the entire Final Saga (Egghead onwards) will be based on very old ideas Oda has been reiterating, maturing and toying with since the beginning, since before he decided to make the Warlords.
Loki feels like a villain that Oda has been itching to write for decades.
-
I freaking love Loki's design. That was such a cool reveal.
-
This post is deleted!
-
What do you guys think about theories about the legendary devil fruit actually being Nika's fruit (hence why Loki believes he's the sun god) but due to some shenenigans it was secretly switched with some other fruit and somehow ended up in Who's Who's hands? And Shanks got this fruit because he knew who took it since he has some connections with Elbaf.
-
Most topics have already been discussed at length but just wanted to drop in and share my excitement as well. Last chapter's reveal of the "Sun God" being Rodo was pretty disappointing to me and it felt like the opportunity of having a Sun God vs. Sun God conflict was kind of wasted. So getting ANOTHER Sun God this chapter with an amazing, threatening design and huge potential made up for it tenfold. Loki's design and his few lines of dialog instantly gave me Doffy vibes, which makes me real giddy because Doffy was my favourite villain if not character in general for the longest time.
I was expecting to get the Elbaph introduction double spread this chapter and the design was destined to be based on Yggdrasil, but Oda still managed to wow the hell out of me with the way the reveal was structured and the artwork drawn. My expectations for Elbaph were always high. I'm glad to say that Oda has met, if not exceeded these expectations, with the first few chapters so far.
Vivi's message to me implies that we will very likely see her during this arc. Maybe only towards the end but my gut is telling me that Oda wants to reunite the Grand Fleet this arc to set the groundwork for the final war.
Regarding the legendary Devil Fruit Loki's after (which is probably just the Nika fruit); The wording of the fruit being passed down throughout the royal family could mean that the fruit was never actually eaten, just preserved for the time when the true Sun God rises again. Loki killing his father would imply that he got his hands on the fruit afterwards and ate it, but I think it'd be very interesting if the preserved fruit was a fake. Maybe this fake fruit led to Loki being blinded and served as punishment for his greed.
-
@Chams-0 I'm definitely not a fan of most women having a similar facial design as Nami but for this particular instance I think it's actually somewhat intentional from Oda. Gerd seems to be loosely based on Oda's original idea for Nami's design with the big axe and the Vikingish look. So them having the same braided hairstyle for now looks to be on purpose to me.
-
I had to reread the ending of last chapter because the transition from breaking the mirror(?) to being outside in Elbaf confused me.
Going back to post-Alabasta Vivi scenes brought me to the clip of her analyzing Luffy's tattoo after the war. I love that now she's the one doing the same tactic!

That was my original impression and I was already trying to match things in my mind to see how it could work, but I'm not sure the timeline works. Assuming Loki has been a prisoner since this event, that would mean everything that happened in Lola's life (being proposed, being the Minister of Chocolate, leaving WCI as a pirate) happened when she was 13 at most.
You would also think the giants who already had contact with Luffy would have recognized the rubber powers if that was a the power their king always had. -
@Dahaka
I've considered it. On one hand, it would be interesting if the Devil Fruit was Nika's, and Loki ended up not getting it despite killing his father. On the other hand, Loki deserves some kickass legendary power to be as epic as he must be, so the fruit not being Nika's also has interesting possibilities (more than one Sun God, each representing something different?).
Also, if the legendary DF was Nika's, shouldn't Hajrudin have noticed Luffy has it when they fought in Dressrosa? He should be aware of the fruit's powers.
-
Elbaf seems to have wildly different weathers depending on the “level” of the giant tree. Lower side is freezing cold. The middle level looks more amenable, and it’s probably where Linlin lived with Mother Carmel (since during the fasting of the winter solstice it wasn’t snowing).
-
@Deicide I think Loki's fruit is very likely a Mythical Zoan which let's him become a serpent.
I personally like this idea alot because back then in Little Garden when Dorry and Broggy were going to cut the Island Eater then they mention something about "snake with blood" and how they can't cut it.
Back in the day, I always thought that this was a mention of Red line but now it very well can be Loki himself which they are unable to cut.
-
@blueinthespace That's interesting, I considered that "serpent soaked in blood" was the Red Line as well, but never considered it could be a legendary devil fruit. Loki turning into a serpent also fits as a paralel to Jormungandr the world serpent. However, I wonder what kind of powers this mythic serpent could also have beyond the obvious physical transformations.
-
Oh god, no. Enough with Zoans. Mythicals in particular.
Between Kaido, his entire crew, Orochi, CP9 and the Elders, we are coming out from two arcs where nearly every enemy was a Zoan (the only exceptions being BM, Perospero, Apoo, Hawkins and Borsalino).

Dorry and Brogy could have never met Loki before though, since again, they've ben outside Elbaf for the last century and Loki was born in that period.
I also do not see Oda reusing the World Serpent since Road's pet snake was already a reference to it. He could try using the Nidhogg which makes more thematic sense, but I'm not sure if Oda will be interested in making another dragon antagonist.

Considering we had an Yggdrasil there and its own Sun God, Rodo had his own mini Elbaf. I wouldn't exclude the possibility that his pets were also just playing the part of other bigger entities we'll see later. Rodo's costume could even carry some hints itself of what to expect from Loki.
-
Well, if we're going Norse mythology, the most obvious one is Fenrir, right? It's one of the most famous and a lot of the context regarding OP Loki fits the myth somewhat. Is Chopper's line of 'there's only wolves down there' literal?
-
@King-Cannon Dorry and Brogy never met or heard of Loki before, but we are talking about a power passed down the royal line for generations. They’d know of it for sure.
Plus, we are just speculating here. I have no idea of what the power is, but a new snake fruit could be different and interesting, provided it has some more mythical powers to it. The Boa sisters’ snake fruits had some cool visuals, I wouldn’t mind seeing a much stronger version of those.

Fenrir is Loki's kid in the myths. Would be fun and awkward.
-
@King-Cannon Jormungandr is also Loki's child.
Myth Loki has a very weird family.
(Plus, came here because I saw someone in Twitter remembering that in Jaya they worshipped a snake as the Sun God...)

A giant with a Mythical DF is too much. A Giant with a Ancient DF is too much as well. Give him a Paramecia and make it creative.
Might be only 2 known Giants with DFs.
Luffy in front of Loki reminds me of this scene from a movie my teacher showed in 7th grade. The giant cyclops was like "nobody blinded me". Loki already has his eyes covered tho.
-
His eyes are covered, I wonder if his df powers have to do with his eyes
Never trust an anime character with their eyes covered

Even though Paramecia is where the creativity lies, I want to see at least one Giant with a Logia DF. Hajrudin asking the people in the Colosseum if they ever saw a Logia Giant made me think how imposing it would be a 15~20 meters tall warrior suddenly turning into a giant mass of sentient [element].
