I personally still think the biggest issue with Yamato joining is how little thought was put onto the character's conclusion at the end of Wano.
Oda's burnout on Wano was incredibly clear, and not just where Yamato was concerned. He rushed the final moment of the battle and squeezed into one chapter what really should have been two, skimped out on showing us a lot of things (like Ryuma's grave and Jinbe's join the crew toast), introduced AND dealt with the final admiral in a pretty lackluster way, threw in a random SHanks cameo to tie into the new movie, took a month break before the arc was even done... even the farewell to Momo and Kinemon was super rushed and they'd been in the story for over a decade... (and then two chapters later he shoehorned in the two Yamato pages he should have had earlier)
Given that audiences didn't go super crazy for the arc he thought they'd go super crazy for, and just how long it was... he was TIRED of the arc after four years and everything in that section was sloppy and beholden to his need to have surprise cliffhangers every 14 pages.
He had a million big interesting world shaking dramatic things he wanted to get to and the last 10 chapters of Wano all suffered for it.
Yep, and goes to show how much better Alabasta’s ending is. I refuse to see Chapter 1057 as a proper ending, especially in light of how Oda brought back Wano into play in Chapter 1115, about 60 chapters later.
As for Yamato, Oda can be keen to further develop as we move along like with the cover story. I actually feel worse for Momo and Kinemon fans, since they were developed for about 10 years, and were still mostly given the shaft in 1057 until the very last moment.
