Florida can't get any breaks can they? :/
2017 Hurricane/Winter Storm/Weather Thread

Maria reached Category 5 several hours ago as it made landfall at Dominica and is heading towards Puerto Rico.
Lee has been downgraded to a tropical depression with the expectation that Norma and Otis will be as well tomorrow.
-
So it looks like there is a Hurricane Maria heading the same path Irma did so Florida may not be done yet
Nah bro. We're done. We've met our hurricane quota for the next 5 years.
-
Dominica was hit hard by Maria, and it's expected hit Puerto Rico as cat 5 next.
-
Climate change was predicted to cause fewer hurricanes, but make the remaining ones more powerful.
We're getting the worst of both worlds here.I remember reading, back when I studied the IPCC's report, that all climate cataclisms would get more intense, and more prevalent. So yeah. More, stronger hurricanes, harsher, dryer summers, colder, snowier winters, and just generally horrid climates throughout the world.
And apparently italy will become a desert. Oh joy.

Yikes >.<
So…. Venice will lose its canals too if that happens :/

Venice will be fucked by rising sea levels.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Rising sea levels will most immediately fuck up Egypt and the Netherlands from what I can see, of course the Dutch are kind of historically used to this.
Egypt losing a chunk of the Nile delta on the other hand uh...and we thought they were unstable and crowded now!--- Update From New Post Merge ---
New Orleans is also mega fucked.
The Connecticut coast is largely unscathed except my home town will split a bit and develop an island on the south end lol.
Though fuck that snobby part of town, you want to be considered separate from the rest of us? Yeah shouldn't have used that monkey's paw bitches!11!! -
100% of Puerto Rico is without power, and the majority of the island is also without running water.
It's pretty much a worst case scenario.

Sheesh, so that means…. that city might disappear off the map.

Oh, wow. This I did not know. What do you mean the Dutch are used to it? -curious-

Yeah, that makes sense to me. Another city off the map T.T

A separate island does sound cool though! o:
Anyways, I do remember watching one video, where Florida disappears off the map from what I remember. So…. losing an entire state is even worse than just a city or two! :(

Wow, this is like the first time I have ever heard of a nation or a state losing 100% of their electricity….. And the no running water bit is even worse :/
And so much damage, and plus there will be floods... and according to the article, lives might be lost because of it. Hopefully, things can get better soon with aid from the United States (hopefully), and other nations.
-

I think at first its more that a lot of surrounding land would sink and it would become more isolated from the mainland (its already an island)
Oh, wow. This I did not know. What do you mean the Dutch are used to it? -curious-
That part of Europe is very very low (literally they call it the Low Countries), some areas already are below sea level. The Dutch are famous for building sea walls and things like that, and all sorts of things that control the water levels. They've even created whole areas from where there used to be just water. So its not like they're totally unprepared or surprised by facing an issue like…more of the same. Also they're a rich and super stable first world country, unlike Egypt.
Sad that we now have to specify whether a first world country is super stable or not now, welcome to 2017!
lol XD

I mean its already kind of like that, only two roads connect the rest of town to down there. One of which goes through a protected marsh area, the other which nearly does the same. Which now that I think of it isn't so different from New Orleans. These types of places, nearly islands out in the middle of salt water swamps, may soon become literal islands.

Oh, I did not know Venice was an island at all. And I see what you mean.

Oh, something else I did not know lol XD
Yay for more knowledge! ^^
Anyways, that is interesting about the Netherlands. At least from what you are saying, they should be safe in the long run since they are used to this type of situation. Reminds me of Japan and its earthquakes.
And yeah, it sucks that you have to be a first world country to even save your own nation. Hopefully, it will change in the future of the statuses of different countries.

Oh, wow. That is pretty interesting. So, from what you saying, these marshes will disappear off the map, along with any of the wildlife that lives in these regions as well.
Regardless, hopefully, things can change soon with how climate change is handled in the future to prevent at least some of these things from happening.

I guess it's a good time for someone to create Rapture or Columbia.
-
A number of meteorologists and news outlets are predicting that Maria has a strong chance of hitting the Long Island/New England area. The models don't extend that far north yet, but there's enough information to be worried.
-
It would almost be weird to have all these hurricanes and for us to not get hit at some point.
-
I know we have a thread for hurricanes and a thread for snowstorms but is there a thread in general for weather? OR one for the heat????
I'd love to make some complaints how its 87F here in Madison WI with heat index making it 91F . Having 90+ heat is more around Aug. temps here than late Sept. I am currently refusing to get out even fro just a 5 min walk to convenience store for food. I'd rather waste $20 for fast food than get out in this heat.
REally damn it! This high heat is the reason I left Texas! Its not simply whining at how uncomfortable I am, its my health, I don't want to have a bronchio-spasam (asthma-like symptoms) which is why I left Texas for. Its been nearly a decade since I've had one but I still remember the misery of having to have paramedics be called because I was breathing so shallowly I nearly faint.70s is the normal average here. In fact I think we've almost broke the record high which was 88F and that was back in 1984. But we still have a few hours, it may rise another degree …or 3. Yesterday it reached 90f!
-
I'm up for turning this into a general weather/climate thread. It'd be a good place to discuss whatever hazards are happening and maybe climate in general since it's interesting.
-
Sure, as long as the hurricane updates don't get lost in the discussion.
-
Well considering the hurricanes usually are big headlines and usually lasts for days, I find a bit hard that the hurricane updates would get lost among the rather normal weather events to complain about.
Speaking of that…..
How long does the hurricane season usually last? It usually ends around time snowstorms right? Save for a few rare storms that happen near each other.... wasn't Sandy (think it was the storm I'm thinking of) a rarity that it was a hurricane that happened after a snowstorm?
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
The snowstorm thread still exists right? Just inactive, but not closed? So once winter starts up it'd be the main weather thread right?

Hurricane season can last through January, but the latest hurricanes to make landfall were in November iirc. Maybe we should close this thread at the end of the season and open a new one in 2018?

New thread called Weather 2018 and topic is weather in general, whether its intense heat, floods, droughts, snow storms or hurricanes?

Sure, that sounds good. I changed the title to reflect the general weather theme.
September 2017 was the most active month in recorded history for Atlantic hurricanes.
-
Winter Storm Aiden was just named, and is expected to hit Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nebraska over the next two days.
-
The Virgin Islands were hit by Hurricanes Maria and Irma. The damage left behind is comparable to Puerto Rico.

Figured this is as good a place as any for this.
A series of wildfires have sprung up basically overnight in the Napa/Sonoma area north of San Francisco. About 60,000 acres have already burned and over 1,000 homes have been destroyed in maybe the past 12 hours. A state of emergency has been declared in three counties by the governor and it's already being called one of the worst firestorms in state history. 0% containment as emergency responders are scrambling to evacuate hospitals and senior citizens.
My grandmother has already evacuated to my aunt's house and they're preparing to evacuate again if the fire travels closer to them. Hope no one else here is being affected by it.

Ireland and Britain are getting their hurricane now

Pretty late, but I'm sorry to hear this. I hope your family is doing okay.

Yeah, they're ok but they've been on high alert in case they need to evacuate. But all safe so far!

This storm in Maine is definitely the worst storm I've been through since I moved here 10 years ago. Several trees blocked the only path out of our road. I was pissed when I arrived at work 3 hours late via taxi, and I found it closed. I never got a notice of my shift being canceled. Well the taxi driver and myself shared some stories on what damage we saw. There were some houses that lost a few shingles, and one house in a condo complex lost most of its roof. We lost all power in our town. My taxi driver saw an overturned shed in the next town over. I'm just glad I'm safe and I had no property damage. A lot of trees got uprooted due to a combination of wind and a very saturated ground. There still one broken tree that's hanging on a powerline.

Well its taken some time for the cold weather to hit but it has and its hitting my area with a vengeance.
At first it doesn't sound so bad, "it's only -1 F" but it feels like -15 F! I had to go look to convert that to Celsius … and wish I didn't, that's -26 C.
And that's just the beginning. Later today it will stay that cold, feeling like -20s. But by 10 pm its expected to feel -30 C!!Suddenly the idea of going to the store to see if any eggnog is left has left my brain.
I shall be staying inside ALL day today.
And Tomorrow don't look any better.I am so glad free heat comes with this shitty apartment , I'm cranking it up.
