So birdboy was an Endy fan hum. Nice way to end the chapter.
Hope Hori enjoys his rest at the SDCC, i know he will have plenty fangasms.

Friendly reminder Endeavor is a monster who bred his children and abused his family to the point of making his wife physically scar their son all for his obsession with surpassing All Might. This chapter has now framed that obsession as something positive and noble and inspiring.
Nice to see Endeavor not only living up to his name, but also getting recognized by Hawks as the only one who actually tried encroaching on All Might's Number 1 spot. Also the way it was presented with Endeavor getting actual in-fight support from Hawks during his inner monoloque, leading up to that sick last panel. Imho a good chapter, even though I'm still not entirely sure where exactly Hori intends to take Endeavor and his current position of Number 1, considering his past due to which he should not get recognized as a "pure" symbol of justice and/or pillar of society.

The chapter already has a reminder. You're just being the dumbass of always. (And yes, I called you a "dumbass" because that's how you've behaving for a long time. I have no respect for people who post in bad faith).
Endeavor is at least doing something to sorta redeem himself. He's saving millions right now while being mostly unconscious. That goes beyond his family, which is an issue that has to be solved separately.
So yeah Endeavor's not getting out of this alive.

So wanting complex, highly sensitive issues of family abuse being handled with a modicum of subtlety is posting in bad faith, is it?
Here's what's going to happen, Endeavour is going to have a heroic death beating the Noumu, his past of abusing his family is never going to be revealed in public and Todoroki is going to his grave to forgive him.
Because apparently, him doing his job is enough to redeem his decades long torture of his family. Never mind writing a more interesting, complex story where his actions are revealed to the public BEFORE his big heroic fight and having chapters where he struggles in vain to make amends with his family (who rightfully reject him) and deal with the public fallout of everyone hating him. But that's too much of a drag in this cool action series of cool action. I dunno, I guess maybe it's posting in bad faith to suggest Horikoshi shouldn't write complex, familial abuse stories if he's not going to resolve them in complex, layered ways. Just punch the bad monster and everything is water under the bridge.
And if Endeavour does survive this fight and his actions are revealed to the public and we actually see him deal with those consequences, I will personally apologize in this thread.

Hey man, you're the one who said Horikoshi had the worst planning and writing of all currently Shonen writers. That's the typical hyperbolic stance of one who posts in bad faith.
Plus the fact that you love getting ahead of yourself.
Can we wait till this arc is over before we start calling character focus trash or whatever? We don't know what Horikoshi is actually planning with Endeavor. There's still the issue of the other kid missing from all of this. Dabi rumors or not that kid is a wild card.
Horikoshi has proven before that he can subvert usual tropes. All Might didn't die on his feet. Bakugo didn't become a Sasuke. The girls in the series haven't become overly sexualized. Consequences and fight damage has stuck for more than a arc and not been fully undone.

You say that but with statements like "Friendly reminder Endeavor is a monster who bred his children and abused his family to the point of making his wife physically scar their son all for his obsession with surpassing All Might", your stance seems to boil down to "ENDEAVOR BAD!!!!!"
Leaves me thinking you'd be looking for something to complain no matter what Horikoshi did.
Characters aren't allowed to be flawed unless every panel where they are in there is an arrow pointing at them saying "he is an abusive husband and father". Every other chapter like Hoshikori does isn't enough.
Just to be clear, are y'all saying Endeavours obsession with surpassing All Might isn't being framed as admirable and inspiring this chapter?

My stance is if you're going to make a redemption arc for familial abuse, don't have characters admire the traits of the abuser that directly led to his abuse.

See above. The redemption should be nuanced, there is nothing morally grey about what Endeavour did. Having characters comment on how his drive is a good thing suggests it's a good thing he horribly tortured his family for decades.
I think what the story is doing is saying that Endevour's stubborness has a good part to it that is useful for hero work, not that everything horrible he's done is suddenly excusable.
Giving him nuance. This is a situation for survival and upholding order in society. His stubborness is useful here and he kinda has to succeed for not everything to go (even more) to shit.
Considering the societal scope, everyone is kinda justified in rooting for him and hoping for his stubborness let him succeed.
He's not suddenly a great guy, he's a neccesity that needs to stay prominent.
But I get the feeling that's not gonna happen. The current system might just fall into pieces before it could be properly changed.
Wait.
Who is admiring Endeavour traits that lead to the abuse?
Am I misreading something here because all I see is PTSD re-surfacing.
How is anyone seeing him as being heroic?
All Birdmen and abused family is saying is that he's a stubborn prideful guy.
The interesting thing is that this conversation here is roughly what someone who is fundamentally flawed trying to change should engender. Does the act of any level of good ever offset the bad they have already carried out. It is the fundamental building block of an anti-hero. In this case his base wrong is mental, physical, and emotional abuse which likely hits very close to home with some readers, so the fallout whether he succeeds or fails is very likely going to be divisive.
Most authors take the style of having the anti-hero unapologetic about their past, but still using their previously negative traits for some greater good. I am not sure that Endeavor can get that treatment, simply because he is trying to be a symbol. He can't be unapologetic. He has to be something people can look up to.
It will be fun to watch how it progresses.
How about
-Endeavor beats High-End and dies immediately, choking on his own blood
-Everyone's like woo Endeavor was so cool, praise be his name, what a downright decent man
-No longer fearing violent retribution, Shoto and Rei hold a press conference and describe the years of abuse in detail, with doctor's records/X-rays ("No, Rei did not keep walking into doors"), evidence of payoffs and purchased silence, testimony about the forced marriage and eugenics efforts, etc. Natsuo backs them up.
-Dabi is revealed to be a product of Endeavor's moral lacking. LoV hijacks the airwaves for 5 minutes so he can tell the world his side of the story.
-Everyone's like wow that guy actually fucking sucked. Great that he saved Fukuoka from the monster, but yeeeesh hard to separate art from artist, y'know?
-Heroes Public Safety Commission and related licensing agencies vow to have higher vetting standards for heroes going forward, when it comes to domestic violence and problematic personal lives. Society realizes that blind admiration of heroes isn't a good thing. Stain was partially right. League of Villains drives the wedge deeper. The doomsday clock ticks forward a bit towards chaos and collapse. Meaningful long-term implications.
-These widespread changes force U.A. to reconsider their own standards for personal integrity; Mineta is immediately expelled on principle and replaced by Shinso in class 1-A
What will probably happen:
The first two bullet points, followed by "the Todoroki family thereby vowed to keep the patriarch's dark and violent secrets under wraps, for the good of society."
Plus Birdman has no idea of his home life so it's make sense he'd idolize that, especially when it seemed like nobody else even bothered to try.
Which also reinforced the flaws of all might's system and strengthen stain's views about complacency. Anyone can try hard during the game but the best always prepare beforehand.

Endeavor doesn't have to die for the secret to get out. In fact it'd be much more interesting if he lived and the current No. 1. was an abuser.
@Long:

That's fair! There are a few decent ways it could all go down.
It just seems unlikely that the wife and kids would go public while he's still alive, out of fear. Abuse has that effect on people. Maybe Dabi has to be the one to deliver the message? Which would really muddy the waters, since his hands are plenty dirty.
Reminds me of Tiger and Bunny, as the no 1 Superhero in that was an Abusive Dad too.
I really felt uncomfortable at people cheering for him, even if they dont know.
And yeah I feel it'll get out. Because Endevour is literally everything that Stain was against.
@CCC:
"the Todoroki family thereby vowed to keep the patriarch's dark and violent secrets under wraps, for the good of society."
That reminds me of the Watchmen movie.
As someone who was unfamiliar with the source material, I really did enjoy myself for most of it.
I dug the style they went for, and appreciated the grittier than normal fare for hero movies.
It was something different, in a way that felt like a good thing at the time.
But the ending upset me greatly. Which of course may have been the point,
but it was still really sad to see Rorschach have to be killed for the sake of his integrity.
I could really feel and empathise with his rage towards the suppression of the truth.
All rise for our new No. 1 Hero, Birdman.
Birrr~dman! I'm really digging him.
Endeavor is kind of boring.
Also… I don't really seem to be enjoying the action in the last few chapters. I think that Horikoshi really struggles with conveying motion in the choreography. Unlike with Oda's action sequences, I really have difficulty in perceiving how Horikoshi is trying to show the fighters' moves. Also, the impacts don't seem to be all that... impactful, and I think these two problems are related.
lol.

This chapter just reminded me how out of nowhere the situation is. That Nomu should have been destroying citizens and then Hawk and Endevor recieve an alert to come to the rescue.
There are steps missing in thiis whole thing. The first act is, probably even the first part of the second act. It's just strange to go directly into the fight where endeveor have to struggle without any real setup.
I loved the pathetic little bridge of endeavor.
Nice. I didn't notice the bridge at first.

Thankfully I expect nothing from the Flamebeard drama and my hope are as low as Rei and him not getting back together.
I guess I'm the only one here who thinks Endeavor isn't going to die by the end of this.
Horikoshi is not really good at leading to the action. Pretty much every arc has the good guys just randomly stumbling at the bad guys and then FIGHT or then we just cut to sudden action.
As for Endeavor, I will wait until the arc is over. I am pretty sure I know where this is going, but I can wait (and hopefully be wrong).
I guess I'm the only one here who thinks Endeavor isn't going to die by the end of this.
I don't picture him dying now either.
I don't got much choice other than to wait to see how this whole thing with Endeavor and his family plays out. Hope I'm pleasantly surprised.

Yea, one of my gripes with this series is how sloppy it is when it comes to getting the heroes and villains to interact with each other. There's just no finesse to it, it just randomly happens. Which is fine on occasion, but it's become clear that it's an ongoing trend of his.

I'm totally on board with Endeavor's abuse coming to light, until I see fans advocating to the irrational wish fulfilment "press conference" or some contrived public dissavowal, or headcanons members of the Todoroki family into things they've shown themselves not to be on multiple occasions.
Also Endeavor is not dying, he hasn't even met Rei again or dealt with Shouto, he's going to have to live with the scars inflicted on him, and in recovery he'll have to struggle with weakness in a way he hasn't before (or has, in his inner weakness which he abused and used his family to cover for, as addressed in last week's chapter).
Edit:Hopefully he loses his license and maybe faces prosecution though, but it's likely people will try to brush it under the rug and it's unlikely that he would submit to that.
Edit: Shinso memeing is wack too
wack memeing? lol
If you think big things aren't happening for Shinso, you aren't paying attention.
No one saying anything about Hawk being about to get hit to the head (prolly the eyes) while all his feathers are used to support Endeavour?
Guy is gonna get scarred.
@CCC:

No Shinso is an important character, he's one of my go to examples when I argue for characters that are as prominent as Class A character A regardless of total screen time.
Shinso memeing too me is his character being distilled to the Mineta replacer or the Mineta patroller.
Live or die, Endeavor has to beat High End. If he escapes the public will lose their minds. Dislike the Todoroki's keeping Endeavor's deeds a secret (don't see them revealing anything at this point) but that's why we got Dabi.
Well Flamebeard is effective at his job so I don't mind it that they never felt like making him no longer a hero. I'm still unsure of what the abuse is supposed to have been. It always seems to me it was psychological and MAaaybe physical with Icelady, the older kids got basically ignored by their dad and I&F got more training and focus than he should. And the kids mostly have problems/hate him for how badly he scarred their mother.
I think the Todoroki´s may not end making public Endeavor´s actions mostly because of the effect it would have in society, something like "I hate your guts, but seeing your ass in jail can wait for now if you manage to keep public order from breaking down, so my kids don´t have to live in a dystopia full of villains, criminals and topless braindead zombies"
I liked that Hawks is actually a fan of Endeavor and admires his dedication, even if it´s only because he doesn´t know of what happened when the number two hero actually gave up and broke. For me all Endeavor´s problematic would end if in the end he actually accepts the punishment for his actions that his family considers aproppiate and that at least some people of his family don´t forgive him just because he is sorry.
Also I couldn´t really root for Endeavor this chapter, I was basically thinking "Being a hero is your only good quality so don´t go and lose now"

The single prominent flashback has Endeavor punching 5 y.o. Shoto in the gut so hard that he vomits, and then a giant SLAP sfx when Rei tries defending Shoto. She fears her husband so much that the mere sight of Shoto's red hair triggers her.
There's no ambiguity about the extensive physical abuse in addition to the emotional side.
Regarding the general action of the manga, I recently saw this video which really helped put things into perspective.
"My Hero Academia is NOT, first and foremost, a shounen battle series."
"These are not fights. These are climaxes to narrative or character arcs which happen to be concluded with a punch,
which is why the series doesn't need overly complex or unique action.
The fight itself doesn't matter, it's how it serves its purpose in the grander scheme of things.
And this is why it certainly doesn't feel like the shounen battle series we are used to seeing.""It's a character drama."
One of my friends says he hates shounen anime, but MHA is one of his favourite anime.
He claims to feel like it finally does shounen "right".
This video helps me understand what might be clicking with him.
There is no doubt that Endeavor is a terrible and abusive father and husband (all for that little bridge trying to catch up to All Might).
The questions that are being asked is if that kind of person is able to mantain the feeling of safety and stability. the whole "Pilar of Justice" thing, that All Might could? Or even that he should?
Would it be better for society for Todoroki to expose Endeavor, or to stay put? How the general population would react if their new security blanked was taken away so soon? Or borderline villains that see the way that might made right for so long?
Or if the coverup continues, how it will affect Todoroki whenever someone asks him about what he thinks of his father? How hard would he work to keep up the lie?
This fake Japan filled with star wars references has to get a lot worse so when Midoriya and his peers rebuild the pilar of justice thing, it's not just replacing a figurehead with another.
I'm really excited for the likelihood of them establishing some kind of Justice League near the end, with Deku as the leader.
Rather than focusing on a sole pillar at the top, they all stand together as one unyielding force.

I should probably track down that flashback since it's our window to the past. I had totally forgot about the slap. The punch to I&F doesn't really surprised since I suppose that's how he trained him. The part I am most curious about is how he treated the older children that were failures. Physical abuse?Constant reminder they are failures? Ignoring them?
I think hawk brings up a good point though in that no one else tried to match up to all might which resulted in the current chaos when all might is gone. Heros who followed all mights morals had the bark but idolized him so much they never thought he would fall or try to match up to him and hence had no bite. Endeavor was all bite no bark instead since he never idolized all mights heroics but merely his strength.

That's one reason I think Edge Shot will be number one. He's pretty much the face of hero teams right now. Him getting the top spot will turn the trend into a standard course of action. Well, that and fear of more High Ends.
"Just Another Hero" really is a great theme.

This is what I've been saying for months. It would make sense that Deku would be Superman-ish. But with the dialogue from the police and all the emphasis on how having one guy be the backbone to society not crumbling has backfired. Having an ultimate team would make more sense. Or in general be the better solution.
Almost all the pros have sidekicks and it seems a lot stay sidekicks for life or don't amount to much on their own. Also Deku is already on the verge of being crippled for life. He'd be an idiot thinking he could have a long career like All Might.
Even if the Justice Avengers become a thing in My Hero Academia, which I agree with happening, I still expect Midoriya to hog most of the spotlight by the end of series and be the de facto Symbol Justice that isn't the No. 1 Pro-Hero but is totally the No. 1 Pro-Hero. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I expect the final arc of this series to end up exactly like how the Yakuza Raid went down. Everyone is powerless and has to put their hopes onto Deku so that he can overcome the impossible. That had all the makings to be a great team-up fight finale against a giant Kaiju, but nope, Deku needs a convenient contrivance piggybacking on him to go 100% and save the day solo. And while he's gotten injured a lot, it never actually amounts to any long-term consequences aside from power-up inspiration and getting more acclimated to kicking, although he's still punching people almost as much as he used to.
I'm fine with having Deku still basically be the coolest guy ever, but I'm just wondering if Horikoshi's going to give the whole teamwork aspect the respect and effectiveness it deserves in balance with obviously propping up Deku on a pedestal simultaneously. Team fights are sort of recurring in this series though, most notably in the Stain fight, Final Exams, and Kirishima/Fatgum vs. Rappa. So that getting more prominence wouldn't be out of the blue.
As far as Endeavor goes with this chapter, my thought is that while he is being shown in a bit more positive light since his stubbornness is being useful, I'm not quite down with the idea that the series is trying to absolve him of everything he has done in the past. As readers who know the whole story, it does make sense for us to be uncomfortable having people cheer on for a person who did some horrible things and hasn't made amends for it. There's a disconnect with the characters in story who don't know the whole picture and can cheer on no problem. I am interested to see what direction it goes, as abuse is a topic that if not done properly can really hurt the story.
As for what will happen next, I don't expect Endeavor to die, but not sure what to think will happen next. The most obvious one being the truth gets out and he falls from his short lived grace and more chaos ensues from there with what will happen with the hero society. However, I want to propose a different possibility that is more akin to what we have seen in real life, though I doubt it will happen as series don't want to have implications this deep. So let's go with the family comes out and gives their story, fully expecting to finally air their grievances and have something be done. In all rights Endeavor should be punished for his actions, but society has time and again shown its bad side. Endeavor just became the number 1 hero and saved a bunch of people, and all of the abuse happened years ago. In societies mind, a victim would've come out faster and the fact they came out at such a time in the abusers life seems way too coincidental and calls them liars. While we the readers know the reason behind it, things are muddied when it's revealed that she gave Shouto his face burn, and society deems her untrustworthy because of that. While you do have those who side with the victims, society as a whole who depend on Super Hero's will take the hero's words over others, and Endeavor ends up continuing to be number one, while society is content with it.
I liked this week's episode. It was nice seeing the rooms in color. Tsuyu's moment was well done.

That would be interesting but I doubt this could work. It would need people to believe Flamebeard is a trustworthy person but we know most people know him as an extremely effective asshole. He doesn't a beloved image. Even the kid that admire was disappointed when he showed an hint of caring for supporters that's how much he has the image of an asshole. He is a badass figure he is not a beloved figure.
This might be the first time people actually complain about the MC fighting a villain by himself. :getlost:
