Original score, weird choices on translation but otherwise intact (goku was never a hero of justice, but they call flying "flying throughout the skies" every time), and memorable and cool voices, they changed goku and gohan once grown up but left the original goku voice for gohan and goten, chanted krilin and bulma only because the originals died, and just plain seemed like they had fun doing their work.
Dragonball Discussion Kai: Broly but this time it's not Broly

@Cyan:
Nozawa Goku is fine. Hell, Nozawa Goten is fine.
Nozawa Gohan and Bardock are just terrible.
For me, Nozawa is the best as Goku but the effect really starts to dilute when she voices Goku's whole family. I prefer Kyle Hebert to Nozawa when it comes to (adult) Gohan.

@Long:
I feel theres a big view of english goku gap between milennials and the older milennials I guess.
Do sub fans really alright with goku havong the same VA as a 50 year old man as when he was 10
The seiyuu is good at changing her voice around enough but still…
I'm fine with Goku's high pitched japanese voice. But that's not the issue.
It's that Sean Schemmel is terrible in the role. He doesn't get the fun at all, he doesn't do the yells very well, and his overall line delivery is just…bad. The Mexican dub is manly and is fantastic. (As is the entire Mexican cast. They also left in the original music and didn't edit anything.) And the Abridged voice nails the actual personality and gets Goku right.
It's mostly that Sean Schemmel is bad. ANd as bad as his Goku is, his King Kai is even worse.
And also Abridged Goku is perfect.
-
King Kai speaks with a weird lisp, Krillin is nasaly despite having no nose, Buu sounds like someone inhaled too much helium, Vegeta sounds like he screwed up his throat being perpetually pissed
-
Eh I kinda think he improved with Kai, but that's just me. I can go either way, Schemmel or Nozawa.
Now his King Kai, I wish Kai replaced him for Doc Morgan, the narrator, considering in the Japanese version, the narrator and Kaio have the same VA, so it's like he himself is telling the story to everyone. That being said, Yanami's performance sadly got stiffer and stiffer with age.
@Green_vs_Red:Krillin is nasaly despite having no nose
Kai Krillin is not NEARLY as nasally.
, Buu sounds like someone inhaled too much helium
YMMV. I think it fits his jolly exterior.

@Long:

English Goku is objectively fucking horrible, and sounds absolutely nothing like the character. Even if Sean Schemmel could even do cheesy acting well, he'd still be terribly terribly miscast.
Older millennials are the ones who watched the dub when it was on Toonami way back around when 9-11 happened. So I'm not even sure what imagined generational gap there is, or why its relevant.–- Update From New Post Merge ---
@The:
Eh, I'm more of an English dub guy anyway. I'll take the cheesy Schemmel Goku with an awesome screaming voice
Ah yes, the awesome screaming voice that launched a almost decades long running joke about Dragonball being a series about constipation.
And yeah none of this has anything to do with Japanese Goku, who I am indifferent to. Because generally I'm indifferent to the original anime to begin with (I'm about the manga).
Even if Sean Schemmel was the only Goku voice actor in the world he would suck shit and be miscast. -
YMMV. I think it fits his jolly exterior.
Can't unhear the grown manbaby aggressively trying to roleplay.
-
I don't mind ether English or Japanese versions of the Z era. Yeah, I grew up with both the original dub and Funimation. Looking back at early days of the Funimation dub it wasn't that good. But they have a improved a lot since the days of Captain Ginyu: Assault and Captain Ginyu: Double Cross (Yes, I did I collected the DBZ vhs tapes.). In my opinion, the Funimation dub really picks up around about the Cell Games and the early parts of the Buu Saga (around the 25th World Tournament). DBZ Kai dub is probably is the best way to watch the Funimation dub of the Z era of the story, mostly for how much the cast improved since the early days.
I only started watching the Japanese version of the show through the season boxsets in the last couple of years (I think I'm up in the beginning of the Cell stuff), I'm enjoying the Japanese version, but I still enjoy the English dub a little bit more.
-
So much Sean Schemmel hate around here, lol. I think he's fantasitic for the most part. Started off a little bland, but really grew into the character as time went on. He does a good job at capturing the intense emotions of combat and his Kamehameha': are second only to Nozawa's.

I like said the dub as it went along it got better. Sean improved a lot since the days of DBZ Season 3. I'm really enjoying his performance as Goku in DBZ Kai: The Final Chapters and Dragon Ball Super so far.

Ehhh i guess its been too ingrained into me then
Watching the sub for the 1st time was kind of like seeing arnold schwartzeneggar dubbed over by jeff goldblum, it just felt like it didnt fit by so much that I was like ok sure ill deal with it but even if sean is cheesy and sounds like a dopey superhero version of the original I still prefer it

Funi improved a lot. And even in retrospect Sabat's cheeseball performances are more eye rollingly charming at worst.
Schemmel is exception to both of these. He never improved, and has only gotten worse in retrospect.–- Update From New Post Merge ---

You say this like the character of Goku is supposed to sound like a deeper voiced whiny Superman.
It's almost like thinking Schemmel is good is connected to somehow not actually knowing what kind of character Goku is at all.Do you guys not like…get that Luffy is heavily influenced by Goku? That he's a scrappy airhead?
So much so that Toriyama even complained about the original anime making him sound too heroic, and yet Sean Schemmel's patented "manboy trying to sound like an earnest superhero" thing fits to you? Instead of being even more off than child voiced adult Goku?But of course right, yeah. Unlike One Piece and every other thing from Japan, Dragonball is not to be regarded the same. Watch a low quality dub, and never even touch the actual version made by the creator. This is different because nostalgia.
-
Dameon Clarke is like 95% of Perfect Cell's character and it's great.
-
Mentioned this before in this thread, but when I was at a Q&A panel last year at Indiana Comic Con, Schemmel was just constantly whining about how Goku is a lame dumbass who only cares about food and fighting and screaming. Felt really bizarre to say that at a panel, especially since Sabat was the complete opposite and being excited about everything related to Vegeta.
-
Schemmel also apparently isn't too fond of TFS.
-

Further proving he's the wrong guy to be playing the character.
especially since Sabat was the complete opposite and being excited about everything related to Vegeta.
Further proof that the rest of Funi is fine and has improved over the years. But Schemmel still sucks.
Like dude. Its been a super steady paycheck for you for 20 years and is no doubt your most well known role. Appreciate it a little.

That's hardly fair to Goku; he's also just awful at being a father. Now that Super has rolled around, you can also add terrible husband to that list.
-
Super is just toriyama's true goku slipping out after the Z anime dolled him up
even in the japanese version, he's less of an asshole than classic manga goku in the Z anime -
Since I know 75% of the dub nostalgia zombies have never actually watched/read pre-Saiyens Dragonball, and think it's an entire series of Roshi stealing panties and Goku grinning while riding on a cloud. This one might be an obscure thing to bring up.
But the best proof of Schemmel being terrible is watching him as 23rd Budokai Goku, and hearing the completely embarrassing attempt to make himself sound more teenaged.Also good job Funimation for fanfiction scripts like this:
. Yeah folks, it probably helps that you think Constipato the Wonder Hero fits the character when they make up bullshit lines where he talks like he's in a chick flick, rather than y'know….an innocent doofus: . -

But wow. That dialgue is about as unfitting and made up as "I need a can of tomato sauce so Yamcha can win!"
Except here they were editing over Goku being Goku rather than Roshi perving.
That's just… eww. That's not Goku at all. It in fact entirely misses the point AND the comedy of the scene and everything about Goku's character?
-
I'm almost willing to bet Schemmel complained that the original line was too "stupid", and wanted to do it "right" and made them change it.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
It is genuinely starting to dawn on me that a not insignificant amount of people don't understand that Goku and Luffy are extremely similar characters.
-
Personally I havent seen dragonball in any serious amount in 4 years (and that was the kai one)
I liked the dubbed because most of the other characters I think we can agree are good and if the cast is alright its just easier than reading subtitles even though I can do it easily anyway
Yeah when I was younger and saw it in the early mid 2000's I didnt know goku wasnt a superman rip off, although I never watched any superhero cartoons so I just thought ahhh he's a good guy
Even upon rewatching 4 years ago, I really didnt give a damn either about comedy tbh I dont think dbz at least, dragonball is more lighter in tone, but I think dbz is "edgy (and god that sounds like an insult but I cant think of anything else besides gritty) enough that you can completely ignore the humor and hijinks, "man up on the fighting" and still get a good experience from it
Tbh maybe if you gave me clips of goku compared to the original and I looked into them id see more of this "john mayer blandness" in his regular talking because his serious voice was the only thing I really remembered.
And furthermore didnt you (or maybe im confusing you with one of the 3+ star mods) wrote a lengthy disssertion on how luffy was a much better protangonist than goku. I mean I see the base of his personality as being goku inspired but its so much more than a goku clone
-
Luffy is Goku as written by a writer with the benefit of hindsight.
-
@Monkey:
Of course you do lol. I mean I'd only expect consistency.
Do you have to be rude regarding absolutely everything? My goodness… Lol. There's no need to be so snarky and condescending towards people all of the time. I mean, we're talking about a cartoon. It would do you well to try and learn to be a little more pleasant.
Anyway, there's a lot to criticize about Schemmel's voice acting in the earlier adaptations of of DBZ (most of it on Namek) when it was clear he didn't know much about Dragon ball or Goku's character at that point. But I don't see why anyone has a problem with his work in Kai, BoG/RoF or the re-dub of the Namek and Vegeta saga's.
-
"Forgot my tractor" was an outtake that Sabat decided to use as the real take because he thought it was hilarious and made the scene funnier, confirmed by the man himself

You shouldn't expect that out of any dub. The American audience has a different set of values and different sense of humor. They have to take certain liberties to make sure their product resonates well with the intended audience. Also, Goku is behaving like a doofus throughout most of that clip. How exactly is he out of character?

Blame the anime, and online-depiction of what DB "is" for that. Despite the series being so popular, i highly doubt majority of the people have even heard about the manga, or at least read it enough to understand the difference between the original, and it's (crappy) adaptations. And DB's community emphasis on the anime more than the manga doesn't help either.
I ,myself, thought that Goku was a dumb-whiny character that only knew how to scream all the time, until i read manga few months ago, and saw the very different portrayal that makes the anime's interpretation as dull, lifeless, and completely off-the-mark.
-

Yes, that's actually what a good translation is supposed to do, and good dubs do it all the time.
Mix it up a little to match lip flaps or adjust for things that might be culturally confusing like name suffixes, but otherwise, they should always strive to match the tone, intent, and wording of the original as close as possible.
Good dubs do it ALL THE TIME. Look at Cowboy Bebop or FLCL or Modoka or any of the Ghibli films. Hell, even the Monster Rancher dub from 20 years ago of all things was almost line for line exact to the Japanese version.
-
@Cyan:
Dameon Clarke is like 95% of Perfect Cell's character and it's great.
Clarke as Cell in my opinion was one of the major highlights of the dub. His version of Cell keeps getting more awesome. Especially you compare the original Z dub to the Kai. Those episodes of Z, when Cell was in his imperfect form always was always spooky to me.

How accurate is the translation for Dragonball from VIZ now? Thinking of picking it up, but I would hate to purchase a translation that isn't faithful to the original.

The manga had a couple translators along the way, so it varies a little (mostly in the way Piccollo speaks and Chichi and Goku's accents) but its generally pretty accurate. Depending on the printing theres some minor random censorship though.
-
Viz split the manga in half and ran it as Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z concurrently.
At first, everything was uncensored but parental complaints lead to Viz editing out nudity in Dragon Ball around the time of the Red Ribbon Saga and reprints of the first few volumes were censored as well. I think they even eventually altered artwork for violence in some of the later chapters of Dragon Ball Z as well.
-
ANd then the later reprints uncensored them, and then the later later reprints accidentally re-censored them.
Because how dare people have nipples.

The Spanish translators are weird, they left the "Chinese names" of the dragon balls. Why would you leave the sichilongongbao or whatever instead of "7 stars dragon ball"

It's still a better translation than "King Kai" "Nibmus" "Spirit Bomb".
Though they do eventually screw up Vegetto by not calling Goku "Kakkarotto" from the outset, which leaves them with the way worse sounding "Vegerot".
-
Thanks for the heads up guys. I'll definitely purchase the Db manga sooner or later.

Well if you want to.be.technical that was already displayed in the original anime when he went upside Chi-Chi's head.and sent her flying.
-
There was a time in the anime that it lost me, around the first tournament that goku participated, between the introduction of Krillin and the bacterian fight, and then from the end of the tournament to Tao Pai Pai that I didn't care for Dragon Ball. The same thing happened with the manga.

I love the insinuation that the United States of America required Goku's character to be rewritten because it has no cultural concept …of naive country bumpkins. The United States.

Do you have a link to the sub? I can only find the dub on YouTube.
Edit: never mind, the channel I posted just got all of its DB(Z) moments removed by Toei.
