I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. I get that Oda is intentionally mirroring big events from the first half of the Grand line and that this is the same position that Nico Robin was during Water 7 but I think that worked because the crew and the audience didn't know Robin that well. It was believable that she may have betrayed the straw hats at that time. We know why Sanji is doing this, Luffy doesn't know but he know it is bull, Nami should know better….. It just feels like spinning wheels. I'm hoping that while Luffy is on his hunger strike we see whats going on with Brook and Chopper and that it doesn't drag out that long.
Chapter 844: Luffy vs. Sanji
-
-
I wonder if Big Mom will threaten to kill Luffy's mom like how she is threatening to kill Zeff. With her vast resources, Big Mom might have figured out who Luffy's mom is…I doubt Luffy's mom is a weakling tho..but since Luffy did say he doesn't look a bit like his dad...then maybe he looks really similar to his mom and Big Mom was able to find someone that looked like Luffy and deduced her to be Luffy's mom...it could be her last card to use against Luffy after she has exhausted all her other sources. or maybe she has her imprisoned or something.
It would be a good way to introduce Luffy's mom.
-
Luffy's reaction to Sanji's cover story made his first encounter with Bellamy on Jaya, and his refusal to give up on Nami being his navigator during the events of Arlong Park spring to my mind. Those were some of my favorite moments in the series, so I enjoyed being reminded of them. That said, Nami's reaction this chapter was interesting, since she was basically in Sanji's shoes once for a very long time.
The emphasis placed on Sanji's significance within the Straw Hat Crew through Luffy's hunger strike, juxtaposed with his convenience as a pawn within the Vinsmoke Family was a really nice touch too. Finally, while it's portrayed to be at an all time low, I thought the chapter actually reinforced and refreshed the relationship between Luffy and Sanji effectively.
-
I keep wondering if Big Mom will actually be an enemy by the end of this. Capone is planning something, maybe Luffy comes to her aid and gains her support?
-
I do understand why people may not like this chapter. Yes, Luffy should have known something was up when Sanji started speaking/acting differently and thusly should have acted differently likewise. But I think there is one aspect to consider, and that is - Luffy's character… Wanting to be the most free person in the world - "The Pirate King", he should be able to roam and do whatever he wants, whenever he wants. In that regard, Sanji's problems, regardless of what's happening to him, I can understand Luffy's disposition. That being, to simply cut the shit, and get Sanji back from that island, and back to the crew. Luffy is simplistic in character. He jumps on the carriage, disregarding the family, the little army, and even Big Mom's crew which is nearby. He does what he wants. He's not the type to play it low, hide, or be stealthy for that matter, because in doing so in one aspect illustrates that such character has fear, or low ambition, which is the opposite of Luffy's character. And Luffy obviously wants his crew to be the same along with him - to fear nothing, because there will be nothing to stop where the go or what they do. And the only time Luffy actually does hide his identity is when he's told to by his friends/crew. Otherwise, he wouldn't do it.
Sanji on the other hand has some faith issues (being with what he's threatened with) he is still clinging onto some pseudo responsibilities of keeping his ol' master Zeff safe. So he's placing his logic first, which is in his character. Big Mom and his family are two giants that will ensure Zeff's death. And it's probably true, but the point is, Sanji is going to need to learn to let go of even those close to him in the past for him to move forward in his adventures.
So I foresee, Sanji letting go of his past and returning to Luffy, as Big Mom's rage increases over 1. the bomb, 2. Cracker's defeat, 3. the failed hunt for Luffy and 4. Jinbe's betrayal. Big Mom will want the destruction of Fishman Island - which will probably be the turning point for Sanji.
-
Sanji needs out of the handcuffs and needs to get over his fear of Zeff dying
the latter shouldn't be a problem but he'll need some help with the former. He's also going to need a miracle to get out Big Mom's castle and help luffy before she gets to him
-
I do understand why people may not like this chapter.
Not just the chapter mate, the Sanji storyline from Zou till date makes me want to puke.
-
So why aren't you just skipping the Sanji stuff?
Everyone got that you dislike him
-

Not many people really think, most just judge.
Really mate, Sanjis arc is not even half as repulsing as you try to picture it. Bend your perspective and try to find things you can enjoy, you started to sound like broken record lately.
I get you are unhappy with storyline but you are making arguments that are very close one to another.. -
I want to see mr prince make a plan to steal the cuffs key from big mom's neck when she is sleeping or something. Or just try it now at the meeting?
-

Do you want people to start the debate about how Oda is sexist again?!
-
@uniaka:

or she will value his cooking so much that she will not want to take the risk to lose such talent and remove the handcuffs by herself
-
Did I just see people going full retard suggesting Sanji let go of Zeff's life. Did Luffy just let go when Ace's execution was due?
-
Perhaps these titles are coincidence,
Chapter 41 "To the Sea" (Viz translation about Usopp)
Chapter 841 "To East Blue"Chapter 43 "Sanji" (Viz translation)
Chapter 843 "Vinsmoke Sanji"Hmmm…
By the way, next chapter will be leaked one day earlier than usual due to holiday in Japan, but spoiler summary day will not change.

And we know Big Mom has weather fruit and Nami's got her stuff going on.
845: The Storm (probably not this since it's much too similar to 49: Storm)
845: The Storm Bringer
845: Big Mom, Big Storm -
Everyone's forgetting about Pekoms too, I'm sure he's alive and going to be an X-factor at some point in this arc.
One way or another, everyone will play an important role in this arc. That's how it goes in most to all arcs in One Piece, no character is left out of their time in the spotlight.

@Count:
Now now, let's not pretend this type of pacing for Oda is somehow different than usual. I would love to see more of Jimbei, but we FINALLY came this far to the arc where he's going to join after declaring his promise at Fishman Island. After trudging through all of the naysayers who ignorantly claimed that Jimbei would die purely for shock value or that he will just be another Vivi.
Don't forget, that blue goomba's not gonna fit through Sunny's doors by himself ya know. There's no way he can join the crew knowing this. His only choice is to die for our amusement. There's no other way…:ninja:

Only thing I despise about this chapter is how Sanji did Skywalk and a few DJ kicks and there was no reaction from his brothers and papa, l would have assumed that they'll be like WTF is going on here.

They should've at least been surprised that Sanji isn't weakling anymore, maybe not impressed by Sanji's display, but still impressed.

Considering that Judge fought Sanji I wouldn't expect him to be that impressed since he's seen DJ before.
And I'm sure there'll be reaction shots galore in the anime.

Judge can be understanable to an extent but Skywalk is a feet that should be mentioned by them since it's a feature that can be seen even on the comic and it seems sort of iconic at this point, but we'll probably see reactions at the wedding or something.
I don't really care about the anime!

@The:
I'm sure Luffy can say the exact same thing to any other straw hat: "without you, I can't become Pirate King".
True, but no one can cook and prepare food like Sanji can.:ninja:
False. He could do the same thing with Usopp and in the Sanji' situation he could just leave.
I don't care what Sanji fans will say, taking a jab and Luffy's pirate king potential is below the belt. At this point, he's crossed the line. The is the downside of having a crew where everyone is friends.
It's even worse man, the others think it as a family and for Luffy is just friends.
Just look how Oda plays goofy with the Heart - Strawhat alliance, there you can see something very obviously since the beginning, this ain't a pirate crew. Luffy claims to defend the poor and being hero while saying he plays pirate but he's has no respect for himself. In an arc without Zoro you have it being stupid with these matters.

There's also still Lola granting a favour.
I rewatched thriller bark with my brother on the weekend since he got into One Piece.
-

Was literally going to type this exact sentence.
Luffy has never claimed to defend the poor, he had to be talked into helping Fishman Island because "heroes share their meat, pirates don't share their meat"
-

I think it would be the other way around.

I think it would be the other way around.
Considering how Pekoms has become an ally to the Straw Hats, Capone being willing to backstab his teammates, Capone being the one to blackmail Sanji in the first place, and how Capone's consigliere is a Germa 66 fanboy, I beg to disagree.

Eh? The only people Luffy will defend is his friends and family (and/or people that feed him), not to mention Luffy's not a fan of being a hero because no one wants to share their food.
-
Only way for Sanji to redeem himself in my book is to do a Dogeza in front of all the SHs. Anything less is unacceptable.

Luffy will only do what he thinks it's right. If that makes him a hero or not, he doesn't care and he never wants to be a hero. I understand where you're coming from tho, Sanji took advantage of Luffy here. If Luffy was a captain that makes his crew tremble in fear, Sanji will not do such a thing. But that's why we all love the Strawhats so, let's see how this one plays out.

Don'y you worry buddy. Oda would not have a SH sink so low to not have them be redeemed and change for the better
-
Considering the SHs don't know about Pekoms, it could work like a five minute truce until they know the truth,
But Pekoms falling into the ocean most likely means the Sun Pirates will save him, thus probably getting Jimbei to get a heads up on Capone's activities as fellow Big Mom allies, I doubt that a team-up against Big Mom is likely. Especially since I personally don't find Big Mom going down this arc, and the Straw Hats need SOME sort of leverage to call some sort of truce or negotiation since Big Mom's into that. Like alleviating her illness, saving her from Capone, whatever happens with the Fishman Island explosives, or any combination of those. And Pekoms is very likely to vouch for the Straw Hats to gain Big Mom's favor, as he is most likely still loyal to her despite being left in the dust.
Also, both Sanji and Brook know about how Capone operates in those pages I posted, so they're not going to condone working with him if we take example from how the Straw Hats constantly criticize and belittle Caesar for his behavior and misdeeds after he got beaten. And Chopper and Nami were in the general vicinity where Pekoms got shot due to following Sanji and Brook, and they were also present for Sanji getting blackmailed. AND Pekoms briefly talked about how Bege backstabbed them on Zou to Luffy and the others. Also, we're going to learn about Pekoms and Pedro's backstory at some point for relevancy after how Pedro teased about it. So Pekoms is most likely going to be active and with the other "heroes" during this arc's climax of fights and tension.
!
!Not knowing about the second time Pekoms got shot still doesn't change things. Capone is going to get his ass kicked in some shape or form. At least Big Mom, as homicidal, power hungry and mentally ill as she is, has multiple merits under her belt like being negotiable, giving her citizens a choice to leave or stay, respecting Luffy's conviction, establishing a kingdom of racial harmony, and her dream being to eat with a giant-sized family. Not that she's going to become a complete buddy or anything as if Luffy would say "she was the coolest gal!", I'm just talking a truce/negotiation of some form that lets the Straw Hats walk out of this with Sanji and Jimbei in tow. But after the Vinsmokes, Capone is the biggest douche that Oda has been emphasizing the corrupt the nature of with little-to-no redeemability at this stage of the story. He's gotta have his ambitions crushed before we can even consider a team-up in some form.

Looking at those pictures, it's like Capone really wants this Germa and Big Mom merger to happen. It looks to me that he's even desperate for it. If he's really plotting a coup against Big Mom, he'll be at a disadvantage if this merger pulls through. So what makes sense is that Capone is actually working with the Vinsmokes and/or someone who wants to drag the SH in the situation. The former is easy to formulate since the Germa are known to be assassins. Capone's faction could have hired them to do it. Reiju would be very effective as she's known to use poisons and Big Mom loves to eat. The problem of getting close to Big Mom is alleviated by the prospect of wedding Sanji to her daughter. However, this scenario is pretty shaky because as of now there is no indication that the Vinsmokes doesn't genuinely want this Big Mom alliance. It has to come as surprise, which I wouldn't mind. The later will have to involve someone who knows Mugiwara on a personal level coughsCrocodilecoughs that knows how relentless Luffy is when it comes to the interest of his crewmates.
Well I think Big Mom is also another tricky to kill boss so the assassination attempt will fail if there's any. Those black things that collect souls from townspeople, Pound describe them as a fragment of Big Mom's own soul. It would not surprise me if they act like Big Mom's "Horcruxes". Any uprising that can go after that will meet its death instantly, unless of course the Strawhats helps. I really think Big Mom will view getting help from someone like Luffy is beneath her. That's why I don't see any form of truces from the two. She took his cook and won't let Jimbei go. They must fight. The story is already hyping it by slowly showing off Big Mom's capability.

Did you all forget about Water 7/Enies Lobby/CP9? We got similar circumstances:
- loved ones being threatened
- ultimatum ; come with us or they die
- 'hostage' believes those threatening them are a genuine threat and would do anything to protect their loved ones even if that means sacrificing their life and pushing their crew away

Yeah me too… Some people speculate that Diable Jambe is cuz of the genetic modifications but I doubt it.
I bet Ichiji and Co are using for their elements technology as Judge has shown.
I think the gene modifications are just for super human strenght and such + exoskeleton
That's what's awesome about Sanji the "human" being able to do stuff they are doing with his own strenght

You would be surprised by how much people get humbled by having their lives saved in one way or another. Like from a bomb in a gift. Or from an assassination attempt. Or having a mysterious illness while your sworn enemy has a great doctor on their side. You could argue Big Mom not getting offed by the first two (and I would agree with you), but that third point is unavoidable. Big Mom's probably going to start up crazy stuff like a huge storm after that weather manipulation hype, but it still doesn't change anything besides being this arc's doomsday plot device at most.
Just because the Straw Hats and Big Mom got off on the wrong foot doesn't mean that the animosity can't be remedied. This is going to at least be a Ounk Hazard-length arc, and there a LOT of factions and built-up story elements at play here. More than enough complimented by Linlin's ethically complex characterization to allow her to not go down. And if Luffy is definitely going to fight and defeat Kaido, then Oda is not going to ruin the series' familiar dynamic of Luffy always being treated as the underdog by having him play a major hand in defeating another Yonko in the previous arc or two. It's just not how he rolls.

It's Feels Comparison time.
- Sanji's speech to Luffy asking what he means by "drive [him] off" has its differences:
"Get lost. What other meaning do you need?! I don't know what got into your head, but I appreciate that you came all this way to see me. Here's the thing, though. If you really care about me, aren't you going about this all backward? Aligning myself with the rich and powerful Big Mom Pirates can bring me much more happiness than sticking around with your tiny, poor crew. If I'm being honest, I don't even know if you have what it takes to be King of the Pirates. It's just common sense. If you want to win the race, you have to choose the right horse."
- When Luffy asks if Sanji has been lying to him, Sanji's words in reply (as he activates Diable Jambe) are also a little different: "Yeah, that's right! I've been looking down on you on the inside. I realize it's probably hard to accept reality when it comes so suddenly. So I'll beat it into you instead. Put up your fists!"
- After kicking Luffy around a little, instead of the "Go…and don't come back" that he says in MS, VIZ has him repeat, "Put up your fists."
- When Luffy refuses to fight Sanji and also refuses to disappear, Sanji replies with, "You always insist on getting your own way!"
- Luffy shuts down Nami's protests (which say basically the same thing in both versions) with "Enough, Nami! Don't interfere…this is a duel." and Sanji answers with "You call this a duel?" (MS was "Whatever happens here, I'm fine with it." "You're fine with it?!")
- As Mangastream noted, in the original Japanese, Nami dropped the "-kun" honorific that she usually uses with Sanji after he was done beating up Luffy. Obviously, this sadly does not carry over into the VIZ English version. Her words to him are "Hang on! Sanji! Slap Goodbye. Sorry for overstepping our bounds."
- Yonji's words after Nami slaps Sanji: "Whoa! That chick is brutal! Awesome!" (Instead of "She's the fiery type! I'm so into that!")
- Luffy's words to Sanji as he drives off also have several differences:
@Monkey:
"Wait, Sanji! What do you mean, 'inferior pirates'?! You know you don't mean that! Stop lying! Do you really think you can drive me off like this?! Don't be stupid! You can kick me all you want, but you're the one feeling the pain!"
(Nami interjects with, "Why would he do this, Luffy?! What reason could he have to…" and Luffy replies with "Shut up!")
"This voyage...isn't over yet! I'll be waiting right here! And if you don't come back, I'll just sit here and starve! I mean, you're the cook for my ship! I won't eat anyone's food but yours anymore! I'll just stand here and starve, out in the rain and the snow, waiting for you to come back! Come back, Sanji! Without your help, I can't become the King of the Pirates!" -

Yonji's words after Nami slaps Sanji: "Whoa! That chick is brutal! Awesome!" (Instead of "She's the fiery type! I'm so into that!")
-
Luffy's words to Sanji as he drives off also have several differences:
