Volume 88 Predictions/Discussion
-
We're still two or three (probably two) chapters from the end of the volume, and no chapter titles stand out as the volume name just yet.
The one problem with villain covers is that there's never much to predict or anticipate for the next one. We know exactly how it's going to be arranged and can make educated guesses at 90% of the characters who'll be on there already.

I think that Zero Escape or Beyond the Yonko's Expectations can work. But yes, none of them are particularly great.
All I want is for Jinbe to be up-front. In either Oven or Perospero's position.
-
If we're looking at near parallels, I'd put Sanji kicking the cake in Big Mom's spot with Jinbe, Luffy, and Bege down front, left to right.
-
Carrot will be where Galette was
We've a couple chapters more to go but so far Beyond the Yonko's Expectations or Way of Life sounds the best for volume title
-
Pedro exploding will be all the way in the back replacing Pekoms.
-
march 2
so this means only 3 volume will be released next year for one piece -
At a glance, chapter 889 feels like it could be the final page of this volume. It hits the minimum pagecount, and "be prepared to abandon ship" is a fairly good cliffhanger, but I'll honestly be pretty disappointed if that's where it leaves off. See, volume 88 starts with Luffy facing off against Katakuri alone, Sanji running off to cook and Big Mom bearing down on the Sunny and ends… well, exactly the same way at this point. Just one more chapter feels needed here, either to confirm the loss of the Sunny, for the cake to arrive, or for a surefire sign Luffy's turned the tables in his bout.
We need one big forward movement so the volume readers don't feel like they've run around for 200 pages and ended right back where they started. Though, it could kinda work to name the volume for chapter 880, so the content works with the title to emphasise there being no way to escape. But I'd still rather see another chapter in there and proper development to wrap on.

I have to completely agree with you here. This feels like a volume ender, but not a good one. It just goes to show how long this chase part of the arc has lasted. An entire volume and we've barely moved from how it began. I have been liking this arc a lot, but the pacing has fallen so damn low. We started off so fast until the wedding, but ever since it has been slow as hell. Get the cake into Mama's mouth already. I still feel like we will be out of Totto Land by chapter 900, so volume 89 should be the last one.

I agree that things have been slow, and the last 10 chapters or so have been a definite low point compared to everything from the infiltration to the wedding especially for this storyline. The main cast have quite literally been stalling for time for the last 200 pages.
However I wanna make it clear I'm not the kind of poster who goes "nothing happened" every week. Even though Luffy and the Sunny have been essentially trapped in limbo, their stalling has given Oda time to wrap up the Sun Pirates and Pound's subplots, have the actual baking of the cake take a reasonable amount of time and face a few challenges, give us some good character interactions between Sanji, Pudding and Bege in that area of the plot, and even set up some nice moments for Jinbe and Carrot in the main plot. Those are all good things that needed to happen, but finding the time to get them in there has made for some awkward pacing in the broader scheme of things. (perhaps not dissimilar to the way in early arcs Luffy would get stuck in a rock or eaten by a snake so the crew could finish their 1v1s independently)
Isolating the last 10 chapters into a volume will make the issue doubly obvious for readers who use that format. Adding one more chapter with a legitimate forward movement for the main plot at the end will make it seem a lot more worthwhile and build the hype for the next volume that much more than what we have now.

It's true that starting a volume with a chapter named "No escape" and having it go full circle would be something (though that something wouldn't be good writing), but I'm pretty sure the volume isn't ending here. Why? Look at what actually happens in chapter 880: the cake baking starts. As of 889 it's almost finished and we see Sanji is on his way to meet up with Sunny. So the logical thing to do would be for the cake team to arrive at the end of the next chapter. It's like when we started volume 83 by introducing Ichiji and Niji and concluded it by making them arrive on WCI, or actually even better because chapter 880 (and by extension volume 88) opens with Pudding arriving to start cooking. Oda made some weird choices in regards to volume enders in the past, but he's been rather good with them lately. And that would be partial explanation to the sloppy pacing (aside of Oda remembering he has fuckton of unresolved stuff and no place to include it naturally).
-
Again, I have to completely agree with the last 2 comments. Despite this chapter having the potential of being a volume finisher, it does feel like the next chapter might have a decisive breakthrough moment and it could be the completion of the cake and maybe its arrival in sight of the Thousand Sunny and pursuers. It would give another impetus and a fitting end to such a volume. I also agree that the "main" storyline having ground to a halt is not the same as "nothing happening". There have been many good action moments between Luffy and Katakuri, including the reveal of his secret with the donuts gag, the cake cooking and escape to sea at the expense of Oven, Pound's big moment, Praline and the Sun Pirates hypnotizing the sea slugs… Quite a few nice story moments. But the scenes of the pursuit have just been feeling so repetitive, I don't know. I think Oda could just stop focusing on that side for some time and speed things up a bit. But maybe he is making it on purpose to end the volume on a specific scene, who knows.
Actually I just reread the last 10 chapters at fast speed and it all flowed much more nicely than I expected.
-
Are there even that many pursuit scenes in this volume? Brulee's cohort attacking, the wave escape, and the past two chapters are all I can remember. Otherwise the focus of the volume is the Katakuri fight, with the Sunny escape and the cake baking coming in at various intervals.

Looking over the chapters so far, I'd say it's a pretty even split between the baking saga and the Katakuri fight with the Sunny escape weaving in and out. First half of the volume emphasises the fight, but it's dropped off hard after Luffy escapes with Brulee, only really showing that he's come back for round 2 after that. The baking is definitely the strongest through line for the volume, since it's where we start and should be, as Koliber suggested, where we end.
The pursuit is a definite minority of screentime, and I certainly don't hate it as part of the story, but my stance is it would be bad for volume 88 as a book to leave it unresolved in a state so close to how it started. If the release dates really do align to give us only 3 volumes next year, we want them all to be as good as possible.
It would be nice if the four month gap between this volume and the last one guaranteed more chapters buuuuuut there's just not a consistent precedent to work with on that front…

Now that I'm thinking, in my last post I was quite sure the next chapter would be Sanji's big arrival, but I noticed that I'm assuming a big role for Vinsmokes in the climax of this arc. If it's not the case then "Mama on the ship" might be this one-chapter-threat specifically designed to be their moment to shine (like the ones Pedro, Bege, Pound, Jinbe and recently Carrot got). In this case, Sanji's arrival/cake being finished might be delayed and only happen in 891. But what we often forgot is that 12 chapters in a volume is a thing post-timeskip; the volumes when it happened are 63, 69, and 77, there's obviously no pattern here, but it shows that making one long volume in 2-3 years is something Oda/Shueisha/whoever-else-that-is-responsible decided won't hurt their business too much, so in particular, it wouldn't hurt to make 88 into such. So my current guess is: the volume finisher is either 890 or 891 whichever has a major (concluding) cake development; if both have one (so 890 - cake being finished, 891 - cake being delivered), then I'm leaning toward 890.

How's it feel to have prettymuch called the title of chapter 890 days in advance?
I've learned not to count on 12 chapters being a thing just because it is so damn rare. I'd personally hoped vol 84 would go that far, to end on the Pudding reveal instead of the 'farewell' cliffhanger but Oda shot me down there. Chapter 890 is no more a volume ender than 889 was, as much as I enjoyed the actual chapter. Hell between the two I'd predict 889. But if 891 gives us either the cake arriving or the Vinsmoke cavalry riding in, it'll probably be that.
And if it's worth anything to the possibility of 12 chapters, volumes 69 and 77 were also preceded by a 4 month gap. (but so was the ten chapter long volume 73, and volume 63 had the usual 3 months so there's no reason to take that as a guarantee of a longer volume)
-
How's it feel to have prettymuch called the title of chapter 890 days in advance?
Well, what can I do, I'm just that good:ninja:.
Anyway, even less has happened this chapter than what I predicted (doesn't make it bad), and yes, it's even worse for a volume-ender than 889 was. So my current guess is: concluding cake development in 891 and 891 being a volume ender. If there's nothing like this in 891 that means Oda screwed up with the pacing (well, he still sorta did regardless, but not necessarily as bad).
-
Yeah, so as I predicted we have cake finally finished and (almost) arriving this chapter. So now I'm pretty sure the volume 88 is chapters 880-891, title likely "No escape" though honestly like half of them would be quite fitting and they sometimes seem to be chosen at random (I don't know what's with th trend of calling volumes after the chapters). As for the cover, I guess what most people are expecting:
*Sanji, Pudding (maybe with nitro) and Chiffon on Rabiyan in place of BM and homies
*Luffy in center with Jinbe and Bege on his sides
*rest of SHs directly behind them and maybe Fietanks and minor chefs even further
*no Vinsmokes or the cake, they're for the next volume -
Yeah this looks like a volume ender and arent there less pages compared to normal or was there just a few more doble spreads this week, I read ot super quick
-
It was the normal 17 pages, nothing different to the usual.
But yeah, this is a good spot to end it. The cake pursuit is at an end. We've got Luffy on the ropes but starting to figure out how to get ahead for some suspense on the other end of the spectrum. It feels like more of a complete chunk of story than it would to wrap on Big Mom boarding the Sunny in 889. That's just a bit too easy a cliffhanger.
That said, 890 starts with that one page where we zoom out from BM's landing and we just have her crew expositing about her being thinner and nimbler than before. Basically the same things are said by the same characters on page 15 of chapter 889. Put the two chapters back to back in a volume and it's almost the same lines being repeated 6 pages apart, which is kind of awkward. Put 890 at the start of a new volume, however, and it feels more naturally like we're reminding a returning reader what's going to ease them back into the action. Plus, ending there could mean that volume 89 ends on chapter 900, which I'm sure Oda would love to do.
Don't get me wrong, I'd much prefer 12 chapters in vol 88, but it's these little things, plus the general rarity of 12 chapter books, that make me not want to hold my breath for it.
"Zero Escape" for volume title, and we basically know how the cover will look already. And if 10 chapters does happen, hopefully that means either a shorter wait or higher pagecount for vol 89 instead. God knows we'd have enough loose chapters to swing it by the time vol 88 is out.

Shueisha's website shows 200 pages, looks like just the usual 10 chapters.

Good find. So it looks like, unfortunately, chapters 880 - 889 confirmed.
Volume 89 is going to be half finished or more before 88 comes out at this rate (might have been even further along if not for christmas) so maybe we can hope it's only two months after the next one, since 88 took an extra month but only has the usual number of pages.

One Piece Volume 88 cover, tittle is "Lion"!!
-
W-wow. I just… That is impressive. That friggin cover is a-f'ing-mazing. Wow. But the title, man. The titles are always so damn wrong haha
-
Oh that's gorgeous! And a much more interesting layout than I'd have expected. This one will definitely be a fave going forward.
-
That's a cool cover. I love the Strawhats reflected in the broken mirror shards, with the allies in the back.
-
Given how cluttered some of the volume covers can be, especially some of the recent ones I really appreciate the clean composition here. Definitely a keeper.
-
Good cover.
Worth mentioning it did not mirror 87's design, but was still a "only allies" one. And even though Carrot was already there in the back, she is also placed among the SH in the mirrors (I'm just teasing, don't mind me)
-
Holy crap! That's some amazing composition for the broken mirror motif! Combined with Sulong Carrot in the background and the moon overlapping the border.
Already in my top 10 favorite OP covers.
-
Great aesthetic.
Ironic that three-eyed Pudding is on the heroes cover
-
I imagine Oda is absolutely kicking himself over this volume coming out the same day as Colour Walk 8. If he hadn't gone and wasted "Lion" on titling Colour Walk 3 they could have matched!
-
Why isn't Pudding on Sanji's side
-

Great cover for the volume

Yeah, that's a gorgeous cover.

::james brown voice:: Say it loud and proud, im bl..
I meant, carrots joining the strawhats!!!!
-
That's an amazing cover!! I'm really really impressed with the composition, color contrast and everything
-
This might be one of my favorite volume covers post-timeskip alongside 61, 64, 82, and 87.
-
Phewww, that's a great cover. One of the best in a while. Really creative with the mirror and colors. Nice Carrot spotlight too.
-
That is one eye-catching cover. I do wonder where Oda gets the energy from to keep drawing this series after two decades of illustrating it already (I imagine continuing to be the most popular shounen manga in Japan plus being exceedingly rich and continuing to earn good money from strong sales are all positive reasons why).

Jump scan.

According to preview, Amande is the 3rd daughter.

[/hide] -
She is older than Brulee?!
-
Damn brulee got saddled with the shitty genes something fierce
-
We already knew she was older than Brulee, but being the 3rd she is pretty much older than everybody else. How she keeps that skin? Must be all the smoking. And taking life slowly.
-
Interesting that she's been romanized as Amande when it's written as "Amando" (referencing Almonds I guess).

The boys were born in a higher rate than the girls it seems.
<brings out="" the="" charlotte="" family="" tree="">Compote and Peros are the 1st and 2th born, order or if they are twins unknown, then 3rd 4th and 5th are Katakuri, Oven and Daifuku, after that we know that Brulee was younger than both Amande (3rd daugther just revealed) and Cracker (10th son), as the daughters before Smoothie we have only 3 out of.. 15? and the sons after Cracker but before Moscatto are also unknown, it is in the realm of posibility that Amande is as young as the 12th child or so.
At the very least, Brulee is the 18th child, asuming she was born before the 11th son. If conditions are meet, and let's say Compote and Peros are twins, and Cracker and Amande were part of another multi birth with the rest of the 2th, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th daughter, then Brulee might have been at least the (1 pregnancy, Peros and Compote, 2th P: Katakuri and co, 3rd P: Amande and some girls, 4th P: Opera and Co., 5th P: Cracker and some girls, 6th P: Brulee) 6th Pregnancy of big mom.
Granted, until Mascarpone and Joscarpone we don't have any other "touchstone" between boys and girls, but as Galette and Mont'dor have been seen together 7so much there might be other hints around.
I should really make a chart.</brings>
-
Considering Amande's placement in the list, she was likely born between the Katakuri trio and the Opera bros.
-
Oh!, the character presentation page brings another interesting tidbit, the only solid hint is that it puts Compote before Katakuri, thing that we know thanks to Flampe, but then it puts the rest of the kids: Amande (3rd Daugther), Opera (5th Son), Brulee (8th Daughter), Mont'dor (19th son), Smoothie, Galette and Pudding (14th, 18th and 35th dauhgters). Meaning that I have more clues! YAY!
Considering the other characters, it puts Pedro in dark, but keeps Pound and Opera in clear, I can accept Pound becuase that happened THIS volume, but Opera should also be "dead".
