It's such a refreshing One Piece experience to me. After being stuck on Onigashima for 2 years with battles after battles, I get to enjoy a fun music-centered movie that has a lot of heart in it with minimal action. I really appreciate that.

I echo your sentiment as the last film had the Strawhat crew, the supernova and their allies take on a former member of Roger's crew who still carries immense strength and power. In the manga/TV series Luffy has fought his toughest opponent yet who's had stamina for days and was only defeated through a team effort and Luffy experiencing another power up (one I was happy to see). Its about time that a One Piece film had a different type of antagonist that wasn't a case of "I'm incredibly strong and powerful, come at me".

Let's face it. Chances are the next OP film will have an antagonist that has links to one of the series' great pirates and will be mega strong in order to satisfy the shounen hordes once more. On this occasion I'm glad that film Red went down a different path (I'll make the arguement that the film's title should have been One Piece film: Uta though).

One Piece Film Red will finally end in japanese cinemas next Sunday January 29th, 2023!! One Piece Film Red has earned over 18.8 billion ¥ (more than 143 million $) and has sold over 13 million tickets!!

Its interesting that they have announced when the film will be leaving theaters (is it to encourage audiences to see it one more time before said date?) Hitting that 20b yen figure by then would be a nice achievement.

Regardless of how fans feel about film Red its success means there will be another OP film in the future (and provides a chance for it to be even more successful and widely regarded).

Film Red comes to DVD & Blu-Ray July 11th.

That's great for the US. Any signs of a UK release date yet? I know I can watch it online but its nice to own the physical version and you support the creators that way too.

One Piece Film Red will arrive to Amazon Prime Video Japan next 8th March 2023!! Not sure yet if the film will arrive to other countries.

It'd be good if this becomes available on Amazon Video in the West as well. I'd be happy to watch this again at home as I enjoyed it at the cinema even though I didn't expect it to be as much of a musical as it turned out to be.

I'm glad to see the home version will be getting a 4K release which I'll end up buying so I can enjoy watching the film in the highest resolution (it looked decent in the cinema but it'll be nice to have that at home too).

One Piece Film Red has earned over 31.9 billion ¥ (around 245.27 million $) worldwide!!! It's the #4 highest-earning anime film globally!! Eiichiro Oda drew a new poster to celebrate it.

      1. Kimetsu no Yaiba: Infinite Train (2020): 506.52 million $
      2. Spirited Away (2001): 395.58 million $
      3. Your Name (2016): 380.14 million $
      4. One Piece Film Red (2022): 245.27 million $
      5. Howl's Moving Castle (2004): 236.32 million $

One Piece Film Red has earned over 19.7 billion ¥ (around 151.6 million $) in Japan with 14.27 million tickets in 177 days. It's the #8 highest-earning film of all time in Japan.

      https://www.oricon.co.jp/news/2265633/full/

      And more information!!

      • #4 highest-earning Anime film globally.
      • #8 highest-earning film of all time in Japan.
      • #5 highest-earning japanese film of all time in Japan.
      • #11 most attended film of all time in Japan.
      • #1 highest-earning film in 2022 in Japan.
      • #1 highest-earning film in Toei Animation history.
      • #2 highest-earning Opening Weekend of all time in Japan.
      • #6 most weekends at #1 of all time in Japan (13 weeks, 11-consecutive).
      • #7 most overall weeks in the Top 5 of all time in Japan (19 weeks, 17-consecutive).
      • #6 most overall weekends in the Top 10 of all time in Japan (24 weeks, 20-consecutive).

Those are some pretty impressive stats. Its made great box office in its home country and I imagine if it ever returns to Japanese theatres (or they do a special live version of it with Ado and a band/orchestra) it will pass that 20b¥ amount.

I think I'll get this when it comes to Blu-ray or 4K if we're lucky. Hopefully by then we start hearing murmurings of when the next One Piece film is expected (I'm guessing Summer 2025) or that its entered production which could be this year.

    • RE: What's next for OP movies?

@MetaMario said in What's next for OP movies?:

it's interesting to see the string of recent OP movies having a major character that in someway IS canon, but due to time constraints or just manga flow they'll never appear, at the best you get some easter egg references like Shiki. Although you start questioning logistics.

actually without looking it up do i even know the movies (i have not watched them all)

      movie 1 - standard adventure
movie 2 - also standard adventure
      movie 3 - ?
movie 4 - chopper and the animals, but robin is not there
movie 5 - zoro has a sword rival or something
movie 6 - the experimental art style one
movie 7 - jiggling tits every 5 seconds
movie 8 - alabasta abridged (first one dubbed!)
movie 9 - drum ft. robin, franky, and sunny
      movie 10 - strong world
      movie 11 - Z
      movie 12 - stampede i think?
      movie 13 - gold
      movie 14 - red

Its a shame there was quite a gap between the early film where the antagonist had ties to Zoro and the next film where that happened again being five films later (Shiki being a rival pirate to Gold Roger). The recent run of films where a new character has connections to a crewmate or organisation have been some of the most enjoyable so I honestly don't mind if they do it again when the next one gets announced (perhaps have the character be tied to the Lunarians, celestial dragons, the Five Elder Stars or similar to vary it from being Robin/Franky/Brook/Jinbei's long lost friend, for example).

    • RE: What's next for OP movies?

Having a think about the next film its likely they will confirm a new one is in production next year (clearly they're riding the wave of success for Film Red still and won't say anything until months after its home release date is confirmed). Hopefully by then more is revealed about some of OP's longest running mysteries (I think its time for Oda to reveal what the significance of D in characters' names is unless its tied to the series ending and would prove to be a spoiler for that).

Mainly joking but watch it be that its the middle letter of the clan/family name which turns out to be Oda (I can already see fans frothing at the mouth over how throwaway that would be for a cheap laugh. It would be funny if that turned it to be the case though).

    • RE: Chapter 1071: The Hero Deploys

I checked online to confirm what chapter Wano ended and that was 1057. To say the current arc has only been 14 chapters no wonder it feels fast-paced in comparison given how much has been covered or revealed (Oda is perfectly able to move things along if needed).

I'm guessing this arc will come to a close around March/April time as it ties into the end of the academic/working year in Japan. At its current pace there should be enough chapters to wrap what's happening now and move the story to its next destination (I prefer this way of storytelling that Oda seems to have adopted since Wano where he intersperses what's happening in the series' wider world with the current arc).

Funny how we've had two fairly lengthy arcs (Dressrosa and Wano) followed by shorter arcs that have been packed with essential details on the OP world. I guess its Oda's way of thanking fans for sticking with the series for so long and realising that he has to answer at least some of the lingering questions or mysteries he has set up throughout the series.

    • RE: What's next for OP movies?

@King-Cannon said in What's next for OP movies?:

So we just had news that Film RED has surpassed Film Z to become the most successful OP film ever. The reason for this success, from what I see, can be attributed to the following:

      • Granting Shanks, a long-established character, primary focus and revealing some major info about him, which likely attracted older fans. Older movies, while they did include canon characters as well, it was never to the point of tying them so much to the movie's plot.

      • Uta ended up being a massive marketing icon herself, being directly related to Shanks, voiced by Ado and something different from the usual OP Film villain. If Shanks brought in the older crowd, then Uta was a hit with the younger one.

      • Oda's bigger involvement, something that wasn't seen since Strong World. As a result, Oda ended up promoting the film heavily, drawing some Uta-dedicated pages and even showcasing more of Shanks in the actual story.

So I'm thinking how next OP films could replicate such success. Will they attempt to focus in another established character like Shanks and reveal some of their background? Will we get another female character similar to Uta? Will Oda be greatly involved once more?

This is me coming off the back of having seen the newest film in IMAX twice. I get the distinct feeling the last few films are getting closer and closer to becoming cannon material and if still not the case, not so far away. Its in the hands of the next director and production crew to come up with something interesting and perhaps they can go with an entirely new setting a la film Gold which worked pretty well thinking back on that film (that antagonist doesn't need to be linked to someone mighty in the series and can just be a threat of their own accord).

As long as the budgets increase and the cinematic experience is an enjoyable one I'll continue to go to the cinema to see these films.

    • RE: New One Piece Movie: RED (6th August 2022) !!

I saw it in IMAX and found the sound to be almost an assault at times (quite impactful but still). I'm going to see it again with a friend if he's available and hopefully the sound is dialled back just enough for me to be able to appreciate it a little more. As it stands I like that they did something different rather than just have another strong antagonist who can take on all our favourite characters with ease until they unlock their most powerful form.

In some ways I felt it mimicked earlier OP films (i.e Gold) where characters are caught and have to think their way out of the situation rather than just kick, punch and slash their way free (for those expecting action there is that as well).

I think your enjoyment of the film will depend on whether you're okay with a One Piece film having elements of a musical which Red unapologetically does. Time will tell if its remembered as a decent entry in the series but I give the production team props for trying something different at least this once (for those who want a traditional One Piece film you're going to have to wait for the inevitable next one which given Red's financial success will already be in the early planning stages).
