Honestly, I think that Masayuki Sato is better than both of them but out of the two I'd have to choose Koizumi because he really got Oda's style down even during Thriller Bark with his designs for Brook and the others. Hisada is a good character designer as well and he does get Oda's style down too (his current artstyle) but it follows it 100% while Koizumi's took some liberties so it looked more unique. I still think that Koizumi can design the characters to look like Oda's new art style while being unique which is evident in his Key Animation for Heart of Gold. What do you guys think?
Noboru Koizumi VS Kazuya Hisada, Who's the better character designer?

Can you post some comparison images from each?

I like half of one, half of the other. Unless there are better comparisons it seems unreasonable to pick a favorite. You've gotta consider the timeskip changes, character design sheets and Oda's style evolution over 10 years.

I don't think kozumi did thriller bark the last episode he worked on was mid way through enis lobby(last being the opening), I think that was kazuya hisada. oda art keeps changing over time, kozumi art more closer to early oda art but kazuya hisda more closer to mordern. Masayuki Sato has 2+ years of production time, a mega movie budget and other animation directors behind him so I don't think it's fair to compare.
-
Personally, I think I prefer Hisada overall because his designs are closer now to Oda's art style and he's improved quite a bit as an animator during Dressrosa. I've come to kinda dislike Koizumi's angularness as being a bit ugly, though it does do a good job of looking distinct. I should rewatch some of his episodes some time, since I didn't really start to really really pay attention to One Piece's animation until the Hisada era.
Of course, if we're bringing Sato into the mix it's not even a contest; he absolutely destroys them both, and I would absolutely love to see him step into the animation director's chair for the TV series in some capacity to see what he'd do there. That Red Hawk he did in Dressrosa was a tantalizing preview.

I would say I perefer each in a certain area. as an animation director = I would choose nobru kozumi cartoon like style his episode tend to have a lot frames in it's action scenes and strong object scenario(check that super good looking table ware & knifes) and his character are expersive. Key Animation = kazuya hisada loved his action scenes in marine ford character design = Masayuki Sato strongly follows oda current art the most.

I mean in terms of character designs, it doesn't take Sato 2+ years to design characters for the movies. Also, Koizumi was the character designer up until Sabaody when he was succeeded by Hisada so he did do the character designs for Thriller Bark which is what I was referring to in this thread, not animation because that's a completely different can of worms.

I thought they were mostly following oda's designs because it's not like his stayed the same over the years. got a comparison to them during the same time as the manga?

Hisada does a lot closer to Oda's style. Koizumi's was fine, but it had an over the top cartoonish touch that made anime and manga look a lot more distinct from each other than they are these days.
-
Going by the pictures, Hisada is definitely closer to Oda's style. Neither are great, in my opinion, though. Sato is the best. I wish he'd work on the series.

Hisada over Koizumi by miles. Although the samples seem to only be pre-timeskip stuff. Does Galaxy or anyone have post-TS comparisons between the two?
-
I only meant this to be a fun thread, not like a serious competition, just a way for people to express their opinion. Also, I swear that during Thriller Bark it credits Koizumi as the Character Designer, I'll have to check my DVDs later to confirm.

Ah, so Koizumi designed the Strawhats for TB but others did everyone else? And thank you :)

Gun to my head I'd say Noboru Koizumi. I don't dislike Hisada but I suppose I prefer Kazuya Koizumi.
-
I don't think I know enough about their individual styles, but as far as I know, Hisada took over as Character Designer around the end of Sabaody, which coincidentally is the point where Luffy starts looking like a 14 year old boy instead of a 17 year old, which I heavily dislike to this day. Again, I have no idea if this is connected to the change, all I know is that I prefer Luffy's character design pre-Amazon Lily by miles.

That's on Oda and the manga, not Hisada, who just follows Oda's designs as closely as possible. Luffy even looks shorter these days.

The fact that Koizumi kept Oda's designs closer what they were earlier in the series during Water Seven/Enies Lobby is something that makes me favor him over Hisada. I'd be lying if I said I preferred Oda's artstyle now vs back then.
-
I prefer Koizumi, because the characters looked cooler.

Since I've been critical of Hisada on multiple occasions, let me go into more depth about why I dislike his Luffy design. It's his proportions.
Here I've positioned his Nami and Luffy character design next two each other with correct height parameters. Notice how fucked up Luffy's proportions are? He's like a little oompa-loompa. Giant body with small stumpy legs and a giant head compared to the size of his body. -
Isnt that more an issue with nami's legs being way too long
-
She's wearing heels so they appear longer, but yeah, they are pretty friggin long.

Ay, I regret making this thread
