Okay last one I promise but I have completed the set and have some more thoughts. To start with, Vergo sounds awesome! He is really smooth and calm, and on the deeper end as well. As for who plays him, they're not credited BUT comparing Vergos voice to him, I am 99.9% sure it is Hunter Scott like I had hoped. I am super glad, for those who don't remember him he voiced Macro as his first role, and was featured in a commentary and featurette in S7 V1. He has a military backround and left to pursue voice acting. In the commentary he demonstrated incredibly impressive range, so me nd a few others figured he would be perfect for someone like Vergo. He still hasn't gotten any named roles, so this is really big for him and I am incredibly happy he was cast. Not only that, but his acting has improved a bunch as well, he has been practically perfect as Vergo so far. It just makes me even more angry that he isn't credited because some one like him especially needs that exposure, I am unimaginabley frustrated with Toei.

Speaking of Vergo, the pronounce it "VAIR-go" as apposed to "VIR-go" which I here more commonly. Another pronunciation I found weird was when Vergo referred to a sad tanker as "S.A.D" as if it's an acronym, when as far as I know it is just pronounced like the word. Oh and Smoker is mistakenly referred to as "Admiral" once, thats about it in the "Extreme nerdy nitpick" department. This set all and all was great, I would say its better than the first. Everyone sounds great here. Jerry Jewell is really knocking it out of the park as Caesar, Law continues to be one of the best and most obvious casting choices ever, I have even enjoyed Brownbeard more than I expected. Sure there are scenes I could nitpick, off the top of my head the Robin and Franky-Chopper interactions were kind of disaapointing, but its over all really solid. I've been enjoying punk hazard more than ever, I'm really looking forward to the next set.

Hmm really? I should've made myself more clear, I was not neccesarily saying the Vergo pronunciation was incorrect, just that I usually heard it pronounced like Virgo. Listening to the sub though it does sound more like Vairgo so yeah thats fine. As for sad, I just didn't know that. Interesting.

It was only once, I think they cut "vice" for lip flaps and didnt realize the implications at the time. Still though yeah pretty big mistake. As for Momonosuke, "suke" in names usually doesn't pronounce the U I've noticed. Like in Jojo it's "Jo-Skay" not "Jo-Su-Kay". Understandable if you have primarily read the name though.

When FUNimation first started replacing the on-screen Japanese text with English words at the beginning of Thriller Bark, it was very inconsistently applied for the first two DVD sets. Maybe their production team goofed here.

The only thing I really dislike about their use of the gold logo during the openings is that it forces them to ruin whatever "special effects" the blue logo had when appearing on screen. Openings 2 and 4 were particularly bad, I recall.

They tend to be better with recreating the animations now, hands ups one looked perfectly fine to me.

I think Jerry has been getting better with the laugh as time goes on, last set he did it with very hard Rs but in this one theyre more soft which is closer to how Nakao did it, since its more so in between an L and an R

Watched the first two episodes and the scene with Vergo’s reveal to the navy. Not crazy about Vergo’s acting so far; the articulation and lack of contractions feels very forced and unnatural. The actor wasn’t able to find a way for the formality to sound authentic to the character, imo; it just sounds put-on. But maybe I’ll like it more the more I hear it or the more he gets into the role. Not a big deal either way since he’s only in a handful of episodes. Always expected him to return in DR and was surprised when he didn’t.

And for the first two episodes, they were fine except for typical Joel directing. Kinemon didn’t match the mouth flaps at one point where his face took up the whole screen (probably more of an engineer criticism), and Brownbeard’s exposition dump was pretty poorly acted and dry, even though he’s supposed to be emotional about Cesar saving him. That actor’s performance is generally very bland. Oh well. That’s what happens with OP. They need new actors, so they try out newbies and we get middling or barely serviceable performances. Man, I miss Scott McNeil as Shiki. Wish they could bring that guy back for another big role.

On Twitter, Joel admitted he’s an alcoholic and going through detox, which definitely explains his narcissistic, devil-may-care personality a ton to me. I’ve had alcoholics in my family, and it can definitely affect your work even when you’re sober; would be unsurprised if that played a factor in his quality of directing (hard to be detail oriented, I imagine). Really curious if his directing or his alcoholism played a direct factor in his leaving funimation.

Hmm to me tonally I actually rather liked it. Especially in the first law scene, it feels like its forced a bit because he is talking down to him imo. Regardless though he hasnt gotten many scenes, and assuming its Hunter Scott he doesnt have a whole ton of experience either. Pretty impressed personally.

I’ve come around on Kinemon. The guy grew into his role more, and I grew used to it. He’s also a good actor, which helps a ton. Just a few lines here and there I’d have improved on, were I the director. He’s a great example of formality that doesn’t sound too forced; way more natural to the character than Vergo’s.

I was randomly looking back at a caesar clip with dubtitles on, and they actually romanize the laugh as "Shurororo" instead of "Shirororo". It doesn't matter much to me, I think in both versions it sometimes sounds like both but I think someone mentioned it being shirororo so there you go lol

I didn’t say he directed drunk. I said I have family who are alcoholics and it affects you even when sober. It wasn’t meant to be so mean a comment as how you guys are taking it. And I’m not “starting rumors.” I was just wondering if that had something to do with him suddenly leaving the company he’d worked at for years. Some of my close family members were alcoholics; you can’t keep that shit entirely at home and aren’t recovered from it even when you’re sober. Honestly that comment was just wondering out loud, but I guess I shouldn’t have even speculated publicly since everyone is assuming it’s just spreading rumors and attacks. If you all had the experience with alcoholism I’ve had, maybe you’d better understand how I’m connecting the dots here.

But yeah, publicly and privately connecting the dots and speculating are two different things, and the reactions above make it clear I should’ve privately speculated about this one. I hadn’t really meant it in the cruel way you guys took it, though.

Well, after checking this morning and still not seeing Voyage 2 on Prime Video yet, I decided to just use Amazon Customer Service's chat feature to ask if they know why it's not there yet and when it will be. As I told them, I would prefer to use Amazon because I have a Prime membership and Prime Video is installed on both of my TVs, making it easier to watch with Prime. I don't have an XBox or Playstation that would make Microsoft or Sony convenient. Also, at least with Microsoft, it doesn't look like you can buy episodes individually, meaning I can't just buy the first couple to tide me over until Amazon adds them and buy the rest from them; it's all or nothing. (Not sure about Sony TV, tho.)

Here's what they gave me:

sometimes Prime video team may take 24-48 hours to add the content on website. I will send this feedback to prime video team so that they will work work with content provider and will add the content on priority. Your every feedback is valuable to use and please be assured it will be added very soon.

So I guess if it's not there by tomorrow, I'll just give up and buy it from one of the other two. Still pretty annoying, tho.

I don't recommend Sony. I have to fight with error messages and slow loading times every time I want to watch the episode. Their server is awful.

Yeah, it's fair that that was a "potshot" and gave a more negative context to the bits about alcoholism. I've just been following him on Twitter for the last year and find his personality obnoxious. Listen, I feel bad for the guy and really hope he gets the detox and help he needs; it's great he's getting it fixed, and I'm hopeful he can become a better director in the future with that under control. But am I going to wonder how it affected his job and his work on our favorite show? Sure I am. Should I have kept that speculation private instead of wondering aloud on a forum? Yeah, you're right. I should've. That's more something to speculate on with a friend in private (though I have 0 friends who watch the dub besides my fiance, hence why I'm always posting here). Isn't it kind of a pretty big jump anyway to assume he is an alcoholic just because he mentioned doing a 30 day-detoxing from alcohol? Like, I know quite a lot of people who decide to go without alcohol for a month or so to 'detox' because it's good for their health/bodies, not because they are addicted. Maybe he felt that he has just been drinking a little too much lately annd is trying to live a little healthier. I can't remember the last time I haven't had a single drop of alcohol for a whole month either. I just looked through some of his twitter posts and that's the only thing I could find regarding the topic. If that is your only source of information, it's really incredibly shitty to immediately go "well, guess him being an alcoholic explains his shoddy work and why he was let go" based on that.

Its also worth mentioning that it is HIGHLY unlikely Joel was "let go". He has directed video games since his departure, I would be surprised if he didnt move on to those due to higher pay. Not to mention he still does voice work for them, so its not like there's any bad blood. In fact Joel seems very beloved.

You’re really going to claim you don’t particularly harp on Joel in a post where you insult him personally for random tweets he made (which has nothing to do with his directing) and are continuing to double down on those terrible comments you clearly made to attack him personally (regardless of what you claim)? Also other people who have complained about issues they have with the dub don’t bring up his name or attack his character anywhere near as much as you do (or at all) nor do they do stuff like, I don’t know, blaming him for issues with content not even related to him:

That's not what I said. I've also clearly stated several times that it was speculation and wonder, not confirmation or solid assumption. Reread the original post. I never said it was definitely that, just that I was wondering if there was a connection. You're taking my speculation and wonder as absolute.

You're really reaching there. I've become accustomed to Joel being the weaker director at Funi–the director who consistently allows for inconsistencies and sloppy performances. When I saw a film that happened to have several inconsistencies or sloppy takes, I assumed it was directed by the director who is known for that. It's a fair statement and a fair assumption; the direction felt more like Joel than McFarland. I understand that I frequently criticize the guy's directing and you've heard it a lot by now and are personally tired of hearing it. But my criticisms were always founded and amongst praise and criticism for other aspects of the dub. It's not as if I only harp on Joel, but yeah, his name is going to pop up a good bit in my criticism when he's the primary director for 100+ episodes. In any case, we'll be done with his episodes soon, so I won't have cause to criticize him. If anything, criticizing McFarland shows I'm not so biased that I blindly praise or criticize whomever I generally like or dislike.

But we're not making any more progress here. I already said I should've kept my speculation to myself, and it was all clearly posited as speculation from the get-go–not accusations or certainties. If you want to keep beating on me at this point, it's just overkill.

Nah they have a different script writer credited for each episode so Joel was definitely still the ADR Director for these episodes

I’m really not reaching much at all. There was absolutely no reason to bring up Joel when your criticisms should have been squarely aimed at Mike. And it’s not a “fair assumption” when you could have easily checked the credits and figured out who was really at “fault”. But no, you chose to assume it was him because it wouldn’t fit your narrative of Mike being a “perfectionist” or “detail-oriented” (which were often your main justifications for always criticizing Joel’s work in comparison) if he directed a special which you considered sloppy. And when you say you’re “accustomed to Joel being the weaker director” you mean you “have a very strong bias to just assume Joel is the one screwing up direction”. So yeah, “biased”. Also it doesn’t really count as “criticizing McFarland” when you divert the blame to Joel.

Nothing in your posts have really disproved what I said. You proved the point yourself that you were biased against Joel for me. And rumors can spread just by putting information like that out there, so it’s not any stretch to refer to that as “starting rumors” (even if that wasn't your intention). Also I fail to see much of a difference between “drunken directing” and “directing affected by alcoholism”; both are bad implications meant to belittle him. Frankly, you trying to force a discussion about him being an “alcoholic” and a “narcissist” is worse than me calling out your opinions.

And rumors can spread just by putting information like that out there, so it’s not any stretch to refer to that as “starting rumors” (even if that wasn't your intention). Also I fail to see much of a difference between “drunken directing” and “directing affected by alcoholism”; both are bad implications meant to belittle him. Frankly, you trying to force a discussion about him being an “alcoholic” and a “narcissist” is worse than me calling out your opinions.

Just realized we'll get quite a few new characters next set, and returning ones. We'll finally get another Doflamingo scene, where we will hear Giolla, Machvisem and Baby 5 for the first time. Momonosuke obviously and hell, even Vegapunk technically. I know it will change when he properly appears, but I'm really interested in what his like, 1 line will sound like. And then finally we'll hear Kid, Hawkins and Apoo again, which I'm excited to see.

Huh, cool. It always bugs me when the closed captions don't match the dubbed dialogue. Funi used have both sub and dubtitles on all their releases, but then randomly decided to drop the latter a while back for whatever reason.

Probably looking too much into things, but for whatever reason on all the digital platforms both voyages so far have all the episodes listed as August 2nd 2014. Obviously that isn't true, but episode 655 aired on August 2nd (In the US anyway, the 3rd in japan due to time zones). So perhaps thats where they were dubbing wise when these were scheduled, which wouldn't be too far off from what Matt Shipman said.

I caved and bought them on Microsoft last night. Until a couple of days ago, I wouldn't have had what I needed to watch those, either, but luckily, I just got a new laptop that has Windows on it. Seeing as it was actually a dollar cheaper on Microsoft than Amazon is (at least in SD quality, which is what I go for; no need to bother spending $9 more just for it to look a little bit better), and that the episodes still aren't on Amazon as of this morning, I think it was the right decision. Got through the first two episodes last night.

I don't think I ever watched Punk Hazard all the way through in the Japanese anime; there were quite a few things about it in the manga that bored me or that I was "meh" about, so I ended up skipping through most of the anime and only watching a few select parts that I liked. But since I spent the money on the dubbed episodes now, I'm actually watching them all the way through, and there are quite a few moments where I'm like "Oh yeah, that happened" and "Ah, right, that was a thing." Lulz.

As far as VAs go, Matt Mercer is an excellent Law as always. I'm still getting used to Caesar, but I'm mostly used to Kin'emon by now, and Monet's voice seems to fit. I'll have to see what I think of Vergo once I get there.

Agreed. I'm used to Kinemon by now too–already. I've grown to like him. Still struggling with Caesar, though Jewel is a good actor. Monet works great, and Mercer nails every line as law as flawlessly as the Straw Hats do. Vergo's intro scene with Law is actually pretty good; I'm just not crazy about his performance later on, though I've only seen the two scenes with him so far. It's Brownbeard's performance that's the stand-out weak one here, for me--the actor doesn't emote enough. But he just had a big monologue in the episode I watched, so he'll be more tolerable when he's not speaking so much; that actor seems to be more serviceable with his quicker, reactionary lines in voyage one.

Skipped ahead to check out the next theme song; bummer they spoil Fujitora's allegiances. Will have to consider whether that mild spoiler is worth skipping the theme song for my dub-only fiance's sake. Cool that we're getting a new one so soon--only three sets away.

Solicits will probably go up on Monday. Fingers crossed. That'll also give me an indication of how much to ration the episodes.

Yeah, like I said earlier it seems that throughout this set his laugh sounds more and more like Nakaos. I will say that there was one that dissapointed be though, the laugh before the eye catcher on 597. It wasn't bad, but in the sub it was one of my favorites, its probably my favorite one from Nakao, it sounds absolutely insane. Jewells just sounds weak in comparison, I think he could've done it better with another take or 2.

Thats… very dissapointing. Of course one piece solicits could come out a month late like they did previously but I'm really hoping for bi-monthly releases, and at the very least this isnt a great sign. But of course, they are doing yet another terrible dbz rerelease lmao.
