Super Mario Bros. is a series dear to my heart, and I'm sure it is to many people here at Arlong Park. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the original game, and Nintendo is going to release…..SUPER....MARIO....MAKER!

What is it?
-Ever wanted to make your own Mario levels? This is the game for you. Yes I know it's been an internet thing for years, but hey, at least Ninty is on board with you.

Is that all there is to it?
-Not quite, as it is possible to play levels others have made. So if you're not so good at making levels in other games, you can still get some usage. There's something called the "100 Mario Challenge" as well.

Does the platform give you a lot of things to use?
-You bet! Doors, fireballs, cannons, classic enemies, power-ups….you can use assets from Super Mario Bros. (1985), Super Mario Bros 3. (1988), Super Mario World (1990), and New Super Mario Bros U (2012)

What if I want to use some assets that didn't exist in a certain game?
-Never fear! You can add some things that a player didn't see back then. There's stuff like an 8-bit Bowser Jr, underwater Yoshi….the combinations are endless. A cannon can shoot out coins, or maybe enemies are stacked?

Is there amiibo support?
-Yes! Regular amiibo can be scanned to turn Mario into whatever character it is. e3 2015 showed off 8-bit Marth, Wii Fit Trainer, Luigi….oh the irony if one were to use a Sonic amiibo. The new 8-bit Mario amiibo can be used as well.

I look forward to trying this game out at Best Buy tomorrow, and playing the full game in September, especially the levels from the Championships, which Miyamoto and Tezuka are adding to the full game. Those two Treehouse guys that made them were pretty stoked about the news, and rightfully so.

I like the idea but I'd never personally get around to desigining more than a level or two i fmy experience with other level editors is any indication… and I already don't play the infinite levels available to Little Big Planet.

Price point will be key.

If Nintendo really wanted to be cool, they would make this free. I know they've spent a lot of time and effort of this, but it would be a great way to celebrate Mario and inspire community creativity. A Package like this, limitless though its options are, isn't worth a whole lot of money. It's a very limited assembly kit. Granted it's a good-looking one, it might as well be worth less than a box of legos. Making it free to Wii U owners, though, would add a bit more incentive to buying the Wii U, make a lot of fans happy and unleash the full potential of Mario Maker.

Yes please Nintendo release this "literally better than any ROM hack" machine for free for everyone because it will obviously inspire people to buy Wii Us and not make levels shaped like penises or swastikas.

I mean, duh, that will happen, too, but do you think the game being a paid thing will make that different? Maybe less people making cock swastikas, but just less people overall.

Also, as a creative tool, it isn't better than any ROM hack. It's easier to use, yes, but at the cost of freedoms with the coding and assets. Not only that, but people have been doing this since Mario started getting popular. I wouldn't be surprised if you could find more than a handful of free Mario level editors online. Granted, they'd be shitty, Nintendo was hardly filling a niche. As it is, this is kind of a cold cash grab.

I see no Mario ROM hacks that let you ride a giant boot inside Bowser Jr.'s clown car in Super Mario World graphics while fighting off Giant Kamek.

Watching videos it seems the enemy options aren't that varied. Or rather, we don't have the full breadth of Mario enemies at our fingertips. Also, it seems as if Koopalings are not able to be placed, willy nilly, all over stages. Hell it doesn't even look like you can organize a proper boss fight.

I'm a little disappointed that the variations of level types is limited as well. (Forest, Snow, Desert? Wherefore art thou?)

Hopefully this is just because we're seeing a E3-gimped version of the full game.

Bowser seems to have pre-made behaviors programmed in. I saw one in a clown car, duck into and and chuck some Bob-ombs.

Also, I don't think there's mid-points.

Customizable backgrounds and a large variety of textures are highly important to a level editor. All I see in the gameplay videos are the generic Mario backgrounds. I want to make a level where Mario visits Planet Zebes man. Or really get creative thinking up my own crazy world. But I haven't been paying too close attention to this, maybe I missed something.

Boss fights are too complicated to be part of that kind of editor. It would need some kind of AI scripting if you want to be able to create your own attack patterns.

We've had AI scripting in these kinds of games for a long time now

I'm a big fan of romhacks. But custom tilesets, music, and mechanics are a big part of that. Oh, and the overworlds. You won't be making anything like VIP 3 or Hyper V in this. Or hell, even SMWC's Vanilla Contests with all their palette and sprite swapping.

Still, it might be cool? Maybe it'll get more people into the romhacking scene, idk. kind of like a gateway drug.

While neat, I am incredibly turned off at the idea of putting down $60 for something like this unless Nintendo changes the MSRP that's currently being listed on retailer sites

Yeah, $60 seems pretty steep for me, someone who's interested in this kind of thing but doesn't like doing it on PC.
I'm hoping it'll go down to $20-$30, and I hope it just doesn't end up like a Poke'mon game where it stays at it's initial price forever.

Yeeeeah, 60$ is waaay to high for a do it yourself game, unless it comes with a crapload of pre-made levels, something close to the equivalent of a normal Mario game.

At least a reasonable chunk of the old levels from the Mario games being shown. (Not all, I can understand not including all, but…)

Captain Toad was def $40 initially because I def remember that being a potential issue being sidestepped by setting the price lower than a full priced game. Same with Kirby and the Rainbow Curse.

! – Was decided to make it only a single-player game early on
– Online functionality was also decided early on
– Nintendo was worried about the servers being flooded with levels and being unable to find them, so a lot of work was put in to make sure players can find the great ones admist so-so levels
– Can’t download a level, edit it, and reupload; done to avoid copycat levels
– Can only upload 1 level at a time, not full-scale Mario adventures
– Hard cap on the number of objects you can have in a level, but you probably won’t ever notice it
– Nintendo will be able to distribute courses to players
– No DLC plans for things like enemies and objects
– Once again, no Koopalings
– Different amiibo suits only change the sound effects/different animations for clearing the course
– Nintendo has more stuff to reveal for Super Mario Maker
– Tezuka’s favorite Mario game is Super Mario Bros. 3
– Oshino’s favorite Mario game is Super Mario World

Nintendo representative Julie Gagnon says that the original Super Mario Bros for the Nintendo Entertainment system was released in Japan back in September 13th, 1985. She then went on to explain that the 11th of September was the closest Friday that would commemorate the 30th anniversary.

99 different amiibos can be used, and you don't need to keep using the amiibo to play the character. You can save 120 stages, and the Wiimote, Classic Controller, and Pro Controller are all useful if you just want to play through a stage.

I can't wait for the 8-bit adventures with WFT, Inkling Girl, and Ness. Holy crap…..Sonic could be in this too! :D

120 stages? That's really not that many. Why is there a limit? It should be as many as you can fit without running out of memory.

No we can't. The level-world mechanic is done like super mario bros 1 with 4 levels per world

Yeah it's about that more than anything. If I got the game I'd just be downloading stages from all my friends, or ones suggested on forums like this, and the game's listings of top custom stages (they DID say they would have that right?). So it just feels silly that at a certain point you have to start deleting old stages to play new ones.

So apparently it is not 100 pre-made levels but in fact 60. 100 was a mistake by nintendo UK. Although 1 of these stages is being made by the man who made Rayman, Michel Ancel.

So that is pretty cool. Maybe down the line we will get special stages sent to us by other famous developers kind of like how Warioware DIY sent people mini games made by famous people.
