Decided to start watching the anime, and just finished episode three of the first season.
For some reason whenever I think of Dio, I think of Aizen done right, or basically, Aizen is a poor mans Dio. Sure, he has the supposed brains, but Dio gets to show it off and show that plans don't always go the way you want to. He's much more interesting because despite his intellect, he has the bad side of his father of drinking and bursts of anger. He a great villain because of those flaws.
I sometimes feel that Dio dying the first time would've been perfect. You have the idea of Dio being immortal, but Jonathan uses his smart to get past his ability to regenerate. Wouldn't have been very long, but I feel it would've been perfect up to that point. I still love the first part, but after this part it gets into the problems I have with the first part. Mainly Jonathon being the only one to really do anything. While the Ripple technique was cool, I feel the first part would've been better without it, by Dio dying a different way, and the ripple being learned about for part 2. Still, the Dio v Jonathon part at the end is still quite great.
I feel the anime did a superb job with the first three episodes. You got Dio built up as a scumbag, but you somehow can't completely hate him. Jonathon is a bit too much of a goody toosho, but he's likable and his inherent trust of people is a nice little flaw. I always love how Jonathon went from being below Dio in every way, to overpowering him in a fight, to Dio becoming dominant again, but guts and some brain pull through. I feel this is why I didn't care for part 3 and 5 as much since
! It's through gaining a hax power that the day is won. Sure, part two had the occurrence which the person was flung into space, but there was some strategy and some fighting against the two for a bit. In part three, Dio loses because Jotaro all of a sudden gets the time stop ability and does it better, and in Part 5, it's only a hax power coming from a plot device allowing for a win
Now on to the next episode.
