Okay folks, as spoilers should be dropping any time now, I'm going to close this thread for the time being, because it seems like it would be veeeery easy for things to go badly in a hurry.
I'll reopen it tomorrow after the chapter has been out for a few hours bit, and there can then be discussion about whatever Gear 4 actually is, though I imagine it'll be pretty hectic in the actual chapter thread.
Okay, chapter's out now and people have had a chance to see the real deal. Feel free to talk about it now.
Okay, chapter's out now and people have had a chance to see the real deal. Feel free to talk about it now.
This probably isn't the thread to ask this, but why haven't your posts merged together? Normally, consecutive posts are merged right?
If theres enough hours between posts they won't auto-merge. Auto-merge is mostly in place to avoid spamming.
Always wondered why post merge system was there in the first place. It all makes sense now.
He kinda reminds me of a Super Robot, to be honest. What with the whole retractable arms and legs and whatnot.
I couldn't help, but remember this guy:

Really? Just because defeated zombie Oars? Remember, Doffy cutted a leg to another giant effortlessly :)…
You're misremembering that fight.
Nightmare Luffy was able to tank Oars' hits, but didn't actually do any damage or win the fight in any way. (Remember, Oars wa sa zombie, so the attack didn't tire or wound in any way.) Hit Moria a bit, but Oars wasn't affected at all.
It only provided a reprieve for the strawhats to gets back up and then do a coordinated group attack.
I'll just put it here:
Not sure if it was already mentioned but, you know how Luffy goes gear 4th and says: "Gear 4th… Bounceman" (or Poundman or whatever)?
I've seen comments (mainly on youtube) wondering if he has different forms while in gear 4th.
In my opinion that would be repetitive (because of Chopper), but pretty beast nonetheless.
Sorry if this as been mentioned already.
Posted this in chapter Thread, but also wanted it to be in here.
Gear 4:
Gear 4 is a very, very impressive gear. It doesn't look bad when in it is in action.
Of course, this is Gear 4's chapter, it was the title. People seem to jump straight to Gear 4 > Dofla. It isn't the case. What is the case however is that the Gear 4 is very versatile and we have only the tip of the iceberg as to what it can do.
IT WILL NOT DOWNPLAY GEAR 2. Gear 2 still has its purpose, and that is to be manoeuvrable. Luffy has a ton of speed but not as much power, Luffy will also be able to move normally.
IT WILL NOT DOWNPLAY GEAR 3. Gear 3 is the destructive large scale attack used for destruction e.g. Noah.
How does Gear 4's attacks work? It's focussed on concentrated or redirected power.
The Python attack is simply a Geppou, By Luffy having his punch hit the air hard enough, it will bounce of it. This has the same mechanics as the Geppou. Luffy uses his Haki will still remaining Rubber and direct his Python through Geppou.
The reason why Doflamingo was asking why the attack did not retract is because Luffy is rubber, and naturally it would retract. However in this case, the Geppou used to redirect the punches maintains the punches original strength whilst bouncing off the air not resulting in a contraction.
Gear 4's Defense. Gear 4 is also a defensive ability with the aid of Haki.
The reason is because it NEEDS to be, Gear 4 is actually not as manoeuvrable as we might see. Luffy can't stand still and keeps bouncing.
Doflamingo mentioned this and said "you can barely stand on your feet".
Luffy moves in a straight line. Luffy in Gear 4 directs his "geppou" and charges in that direction. You cannot control a bounce and make it move by will. Naturally it would have to bounce off something and it will go in ONE DIRECTION
This is shown in the chapter as Luffy charges in one direction, even when Doflamingo flies into the sky.
This is Luffy's Drawback but it's also where the defence side comes in. Even Though Luffy's attacks are powerful in Gear 4 he lacks manoeuvrability as he can only bounce in one direction. Thus needing a defence capability
Doflamingo displayed how Luffy was wide open by attacking Luffy with the Hamstring. However, this was going to be the case being a bounce man, as it causes a loss in manoeuvrability This is why Gear 4 won't leave Gear second out. GEAR SECOND IS NOT JUST SORU, THERE'S A LOT MORE TO IT AND DOES SERVE A CRUCIAL ROLE.
So to compensate for this, Luffy uses Haki and the rubbers properties to be able to bounce off attacks unscathed. This had to be the case since Luffy is going to be wide open at times, so it has to support him defensively.
Whilst it's not as destructive and Massive as Gear third, It is less powerful with a much lessened AOE as it is concentrated. But unlike Gear third, Luffy can afford to be less manoeuvrable as he has that beastly defence with Rubber + Haki.
Whereas Luffy in Gear third cannot afford to be non manoeuvrable as he would get tossed around and be countered easily as displayed Last chapter.
This chapter didn't touch on the Drawbacks yet for plot purposes. However Doflamingos displayed that he can easily counter it, but needs to change his plan of attack.
The drawbacks don't necessarily need to be "exhausting" but fight costly such as manoeuvrability but can be compensated with the use of a defensive perk
Luffy will NOT rely on Gear 4 all the time.
As this is Gear 4's first appearance, there was a slow activation to show what was going on (just like the first transformations to Super Saiyan).
Luffy will be Switching from Gears 2-4 efficiently as the story progresses. Whether or not he will in this fight, I am not sure.
Luffy can handle G2 and G3, but I believe after using G4, he will have a drawback that'll make him somehow motionless like after the battles before the timeskip.
He heavily overuses his muscles with this technique, so I'd put my money on either his whole body is going stiff and you can lean Luffy on a wall for a few hours like some frozen trousers, or his body will get all jiggly-wiggly lying on the ground, unable to move his stretched arms and legs, like a man without bones

He also has a bit of loading time with his attacks since they require compression.
There might even be more vulnerability to piercing attacks in a balloon form.

I just posted without reading your post/wall of text, sry. I actually agree with everything you say, but I liked the sleep eating and chibi-Luffy back then. I want something like that for G4.

Yeah i was calling on that too! Chibi Luffy and it would be like candified vegeto fighting Buu.
Although i did predict defence earlier in the thread before the release. And it was damn accurate. Doflamingo was treating Luffy as if he was attracted to the ground, now it won't happen because of Gear 4.
@DHL:
Luffy seems to be attracted to walls and the floor in the fight against Doflamingo.
It might be an "all round" up in power but might be more on a defensive level too.
I never said it would purely be defensive. He can't be "pure strength", he's gotta have some defensive attributes to him at least.
It's gonna be an "all round" gear IMO
@DHL:
You know "muscle" really doesn't make you stronger in hitting. If anything it'll probably be defendive if muscle.
It's form that makes the punch.
Luffy having a new fighting style would be great because styles make fights.
@DHL:
I mentioned a drawback.
The drawback is actually maneuverability but it is compensated with defence. Luffy can only bounce and move in one direction.
i saw your full explanation but dont think i agree with maneuverability being the drawback. because this form allows him to use geppou this should actually compensate for that. you mention he needs to bounce off something but with geppou all you need is air. imagine luffy zig zagging across the battle field because of it, his maneuverability should be fine.
i agree with gear 3 still being important, but its hard to see it for gear 2. i know its hard to tell for certain, but for him to be surprising doffy means he's pretty fast.

Luffy hasn't been shown changing directions whilst in this gear. He's even having to bounce to go towards dofla. Once he can straighten himself towards his target. He can go for a leap towards the target.
But then again, we'll see as the next chapters come out.

we see him change directions with his fist
!
and we see him move through the air so fast he surprised doffy
!
shouldn't it be just as possible to move through the air?
if you're not convinced, look at how they used geppou and its maneuverability (start at 40 secs)

Luffy redirecting his fist would be needed to compensate for the lack of manoeuvrability.
He did use Soru on that situation and he basically turned up to the side of Dofla.
Has Luffy hasn't been shown using Geoppou in a zig zag motion with Luffy.
! >! Luffy here is shown barely being able to stand on the ground, and basically jumps straight towards Doflamingo.
Doflamingo easily countered Luffy and landed a hit on Luffy here.
!
Luffy relies on the defence so he doesn't require speedy reflexes needed in situations like this.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
At the bottom of this panel;
!
Luffy is seen to have to bounce to get towards his target. A miss timed bounce can be costly
@DHL:
stuff
1.) in boxing, unless you're a heavy weight, youre told to not be heavy(planted) on your feet and move about. the fact that luffy is bouncing around is more helpful in terms of being maneuverable, not the opposite. if an opponent attacks luffy, he can leap in the air and move about using geppou, something luffy has done with his fist, which mind you would be harder to do than your feet, so again… this doesn't hinder his maneuverability.
2.) easily countered? luffy saw the kick coming and knew it wouldn't affect him, he applied haki to the area and took it head on... whether you agree with this or not is fine, no biggie if you dont, BUT, IF YOU DONT, you implied luffy used soru above, he should have been able to use it again to escape as he saw the kick coming... still doesn't hinder maneuverability. (i dont believe he used or can use soru outside of gear 2, but thats for another discussion)
3.) a missed timed bounce can undoubtedly be costly, so can a miss timed step, a slip, trip or fall, its really not a major point but even so if you still believe it is, he still has geppou which we've seen its actual uses before in maneuverability.
4.) you also mention, luffy has never been shown zig zagging with geppou... youre right, but up until chapter 784, we've never seen luffy able to suck his punch in and release it like a piston. the absence of evidence isn't the evidence of absence. what we do know is that, luffy is able to zig zag his punches, and we've seen geppou being used, zig zagging with even the lowest member of cp9 (nero) so its MORE LIKELY to being able to be used by luffy to zig zag through the air.
Luffy was still mid punch and was already kicked. Regardless of whether he sawit in time, Luffy has been outclassed in speed and seen the attack coming.
Of course witha new gear we would have never seen stuff like it before. That's a bad parallel IMO.
I'm sure it will be touched up upon next chapter.

outclassed!?
!
outclassed by the same guy who barely managed to put up haki to defend himself?
luffy threw a punch and doffy dodged and countered. outclassed is way too extreme
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
if i come off as aggressive and seem to be attacking you, i apologize, as my only aim is to show you that i disagree with his weakness of maneuverability. the gear has only been shown for 1 chapter so of course a lot more is to be shown, but with the current display, i dont think its enough to warrant maneuverability as its weakness yet. infact the opposite holds true through previous situations.
Luffy came up with gear 4 at ruskhaina so unlike gear 3 and 2 (at the time he first used them)it's a technique he might already be used to.So the drawback effect might be minimal.
I'll just put it here:

I'm here to be challenged and get different view points.
But yes. We haven't seen much at all bro.
Probably thought of earlier, but what if Gear Fourth Luffy is believe to be a completely different person, and gets a separate bounty for beating Doflamingo?
I just love the technique in the center! So much inspiring…
It's always hard to predict where a car goes on Neutral :D
Honestly, this gear is a bit weird and uses a small amount of bullshit, but it also makes a quite interesting use of physics (the increased elasticity of his body is, as far as I can tell, what lets him use Python, because he can use his haki to "reflect" his arm at perfectly-arranged angles without losing velocity. This is only possible with an extremely high spring coefficient, which he now has). I think most importantly, the increased acceleration potential of his extremities makes it fit the feel I wanted from a "Gia Foosu", which sounds like both Gear Fourth and Gear Force.
I would absolutely love it if the reason Luffy doesn't use Gear 4th more often is because he might lose his thongs, he flicks them off quite obviously.
Thinking process that lead to Gear 4:
"Dude, I wrote myself into the corner again. To solve this, I need a really clever twist or another super say… errr mode. Ok, super mode then. What shall it be? I already did heating up and inflation. What else can you do with rubber? Whatever, I will just slap something together from old stuff. "
Posted this in the chapter thread too but,
The form may have been inspired by Eneru.
http://mangafox.me/manga/one_piece/v32/c298/5.html
The pose and body proportions are identical. Plus in universe this makes sense since Luffy recalled skypieans having mantra just before he started his training…so he'd likely recall eneru too.
Plus Sky Island callbacks this arc with bellamy.

exact same pose, very nice catch !
I am 140% sure that we will see different styles of Gear 4th.
Why he then called Gear 4 with a name, Bound Man.
2 to go!

I don't think this is a Deus Ex Machina
We had a two year timeskip, foreshadows that Luffy would have learned something. Otherwise I think Oda would just overpower Luffy and have him beat Doffy without a 4th gear.
The form may have been inspired by Eneru.
The pose and body proportions are identical.
While it could be possible that Luffy got the idea from seeing Eneru do it, I highly doubt it. As far as I read in the spoiler thread, it seems to be a known pose in those traditional kabuki thingies (don't ask me, that's all I know about it, just google it). As people have pointed out, Kumadori has done the same pose (couldn't find an actual page from the manga and didn't really bother to look too deep into it, so here's a volume cover instead):
[hide][/hide]
So it might be an actual tradition within the One Piece universe or maybe there isn't even a proper in-world explanation for it.
Hey… Could I ask why I can't seem to go on Mangafox without the words otter out the phrase. "Sorry it's licensed and not A bailable!" Is it just me?

Because Mangafox blocked all United States IPs for that manga due to it being licensed.
The same thing happens with One Piece and other licensed series too.

Well that's stupid of them to do. Do I have to create another IP from another Country just to read there stuff? Lame. If that's the case, wouldn't scanlesions like Mangapanda and other sites have the same thing as well? And isn't there also a Viz Media in Europe? (In the UK?) It just seems like there's no end to this madness. And I'm on my iPhone no less. LOL

Yeah, if you use a VPN or a proxy in a region where the series isn't licensed, it shows up just fine. But there's no need, since there are plenty of other sites that have these series if you really want to read scans.
I can't remember the details, but I'm pretty sure they were almost shut down, so they had to enact a policy where licensed manga in certain
A lot of the other Manga reader sites (Mangapanda, for example) are hosted in China, so they're harder to take down in comparison.

Isn't mangastream also in America? At least from what I can gather. But least with there doing it for promotion of the official release. So they basically tell you to buy the official manga before they remove their posts online. lol
Also I don't remember Lolicon manga ever being license in America before? XD So basically America fuck no! lol

Mangastream was also targeted, but was apparently able to bypass it by only hosting 2 chapters at a time (and releasing only after another site has released).

Well there smarter than the average bear. XD Unlike MangaFox! LOL
I also heard that they have like a manga section simply for Hentai byproducts. They also said that offline and it's currently license in America…. XD
I guess Boku No Pico is Quality material for us Americans! XD
But I'll stop with the jokes for now.

Kumadori is open handed in that picture though… and as far as I remember luffy only saw him during the bit where the two groups faced each other. i'm not sure how much attention he gave to Kumadori.
On the other hand we know luffy paid attention to Eneru.
People keep comparing this arc to Alabasta. but to the same degree could be compared to Skypiea.
Exposition to Warlords before the main ark/ other big characters.
Jaya: Warlords, Sengoku(marines), Whitebeard. Dresserosa: Warlords, Akainu(marines) Supernovas, former warlords.
The nature of other strong characters who help out i.e Gan Fall and wiper. plus non conventional matchups
Skypiea: ordeals being multiple fighters against each other, the other characters getting KO's. Dresserosa: Coliseum, fights agains Dofla's family.
Jaya: Bellamy, Dofla, Blackbeard. Desserosa: Bellamy, Dofla, Blackbeard.
Ganfall is supposedly based on Don Quixote of La Mancha.
Stuff
Actually, this arc is not only drawback to those two sagas, but to Water 7 & Thriller Bark too.
