One Piece 721 : Rebecca and Mr. Soldier

! chapter 721: Rebecca and the toy soldier
coverstory: Caribou enters scotch's mouth, making him swallow (and choke on?) part of his swamp-self
! rebecca cries the toy soldier will surely die.
She explains to luffy that they are no different than humans, they become friends to friendless, brothers to brotherless, and lovers to the loveless.
Ever since she lost her only family, her mother, the soldier has been with her, he's like a parent to her.
! Luffy scoops up the food he dropped to eat, while rebecca looks at him speechless.
He tells her she doesn't look like a prisoner, and she tells him they'll meet again at the championship finals.
The ring is repaired and the d block is starting, rebecca leaves luffy and heads for the ring…
! Flashback starts
rebecca lives with her mother, who gather flowers and sells them.
Meanwhile in dressrosa, apparently the king has gone mad and set fire on a village.
The kingdom is set aflame (likely due to revolts from losing the trusts of the citizens)
group of rebels attack rebecca ad her mother, as a citizen cries out to scarlet, the mother, to run.
The man leading the chase seems to be young diamante.
! Scarlet and rebecca are on the run, but they are starved from not eating for two days in a row..
Scarlet goes back to the town to buy food for her daughter, but is killed in the process.
The toy soldier comes running back to rebecca, carrying the corpse of her mother.
As rebecca eats the food her mother brought her with her life, the soldier explains that there's a new king in dressrosa,
and they're looking to capture anyone related to the old king, including her mother.
He vows to always be by her side, and to protect her even if costs him his life.
Rebecca rejects him, and runs away crying, blaming the soldier for not being able to protect scarlet.
! Meanwhile in dressrosa, doflamingo takes the throne, blaming the former king for turning on his people.
He promises the citizens of wealth.
! As the toy soldier and rebecca spends time together, she develops affections for him, and opens up to him.
He finds a home for rebecca to stay in as he work for her living. He cannot enter the house, so he tells her he'll leave a petal of flower through the window every morning to remind her he's always near by
! some days pass, and rebecca gradually grows up.
The soldier acts as a guardian, fending off bullies from her as well as boys who wants to date her.
But one day, group of thieves enter the house thinking there's only a little girl living there alone.
As the thugs tie up rebecca, the toy soldier comes rushing in, shooting them with guns.
! The soldier is now a wanted man, and rebecca leaves the house with him.
As they travel together, the soldier teaches her how to fight. How to keep herself from any harm.
! End of flashback
! as block d starts and rebecca enters the ring, the crowd boos at the sight of her.
Because she is a linage of the riku royal family, she is hated by the whole island.
They tell her to go die, and wishes to finally see her cut to pieces...
Hearing this luffy snaps and enrages at the crowd.
The prisoners explains him her royal linage and the reason why she's hated...

IDK if this was already brought up in the spoiler thread, but there was the argument of Doffy succeeded in taking over a kingdom and Croc didn't. IMO thats a lil unfair cause Doffy was in a better position from the start cause he has relations to tenryuubito at least. Croc on the other hand would have needed the Pluton because the WG wouldn't have sit calm if a former pirate took over a WG-ally-kingdom.
We don't know if the former DR-king was a WG-ally, but what we know from the dwarves, at least the dwarves had beef with the Donquixotes since 900 yrs.
So even if the SHs haven't been, it would have been much harder for Croc to keep the throne. I only wanted to point that out.

From what we can see kohza is nothing like the toy soldier in terms of story role .

Cover story was the best thing this week. Some of the panels of the flashback were cute, but besides that the whole thing was pretty meh. Maybe the worst chapter of the arc until now.

Wow! This chapter! Well, somehow, I found the most emotional thing to be Luffy eating food off the floor, but anyway . . .

That panel of Luffy eating the food he dropped off the floor because Rebecca spent all her money on it … harks all the way back to Zoro in volume 1. It wasn't given proper attention in this case, but somehow managed to be brilliant all the same.

The flashback was concise, but showed quite a lot. I'm thinking that the former king was actually a rubbish king who Doflamingo usurped. Well, it would certainly be more interesting that way.

It feels like Scarlet ought to be related to Violet, although that might mean Violet is a royal (but she might not be . . . ) In any caase, that relation would explain why Violet is working for Doffy against her will, unlike most of Doffy's subordinates.

Looks to me like it was Diamante hunting down Scarlet … now that was interesting.

The story all in all was pretty nice. From Rebecca dropping her shield, I assume she was taught that fighting style with one sword? Like Kyros and Ricky. Which leads even more to believe that the Soldier was the gladiator Kyros until 20 years ago, somehow … ?

The final revelation kinda suggests this arc's resolution will make Rebecca queen, I think. But it's interesting how little she knows - although she's supposedly a royal, she wasn't around the palace in her youth; it seems she lived kinda alone-ish with her mother, and she wasn't really aware of her position. Also, even now, she knows so little about the guy she's trying to take down. She doesn't seem to know about the fact that Doflamingo turns people into toys for one . . .

That panel with Doflamingo standing on a pile of boxes (?) with his subordinates on the ones below, that was awesome.

Most likelly, it has been like that for other blocks plus it keeps the suspense.

Still going with Cavendish as the winner of this block, unless we get a surprise candidate, Rebecca doesn't seem capable of beating him on her own.

i have a feeling all the connections that the humans make with the toys are because each toy themselves had a prior connection to their human friend. that's why there is no questions asked, its just they know that toy/human, they may not remember entirely, but they know.

as much as i like cabbage and i dont really care about rebecca, i still want rebecca to win. she said she want to protect instead of being protected all the time. if she lose then it will be a bad development. i want her to at least make halfway through her plan by winning the block and defeat a family member. she can then be defeated by diamante or dofla himself. luffy then can take over. if she loses already and luffy needs to do all the work from the start, i wont like it.

there's a chance cabbage miss his match because he's too busy searching for lucy. or luffy distract cabbage's attention during the match and give rebecca a chance (it's kinda low though).

I dont think its absurd that Caribou looks like beating Scotch. First of we have never acutally seen how strong Scotch is. We dont even know if he is part of Kaidos main crew. Even if we go by his number there are at least 17 stronger fighter amongst Kaidos crew without counting Kaido himself.
Secondly the investment in the fight is way different with Scotch and Caribou. Caribou lost his shit cause off the grandma and stuff. Scotch isnt even emotionally invested in the fight. He doesnt give a shit about the granny or Caribou. He has no other reason to fight Caribou except the fact that Caribou attacked him.
Already 5 or 6 people mentioned that they find it strange that Caribou is winning. Someone even said absurd. The only thing that is absurd, is the fact that people hype a charcter like Scotch only cause of his affiliation with someone powerfull. This is One Piece. First half of the Grandline Luffy always got into fights with stronger oppenents and kicked their ass. Mainly because he was emotionally invested in the fight. Even Drake didnt resprect Scotch one bit and attacked him right away. Caribous bounty is at the same level or even higher than Drakes. Why in the world should Caribou not have a chance to win against Scotch, esprecially with his whole crew around and a way higher motivation than Scotch. A character we know almost nothing about. Not a bounty or even any indication to his powerlevel. People who find this strange or absurd havent understood One Piece AT ALL. What about Rayleigh a gambling drunk hobo? Appearance doesnt mean shit in One Piece most of the time and the person with the strong will or spirit almost always wins the fight.

I think Caribou is just a really bad match up for Scotch. I don't believe that being swamped by Caribou is indicative of his true strength. I'm sure Drake won, but he probably had a harder time simply because he is not a Logia.

How could Ricky even be considered as the King? You'd think Gatz or someone watching the tournament would say something about the Ex-King being in the tournament?
My guess is Toy Soldier is her father, and Ricky was just someone else who helped train her into being a Gladiator.
As for the rest of the chapter it was really good. To me it looks like Diamante could be the man who can change the people into toys…
And I love the fact that Caribou is absolutely destroying Scotch now.
Great chapter. But still, I really don't think Ricky is the ex-king otherwise everyone would of completely boo'd him and would of been explained then as him being the ex-king...

Dofla sent undercover people to Dressrosa before the attack to turn all the man able to fight into toys and erase as many minds as possible.
Then he found a way to blame the Riku army for the attack.

The Riku army is the dwarf army.

Theory about Ricky and Kyros so far:

Ricky is Rebeccas grandpa King Riku. He was not a bad king but very proud, traditional and honorable. Rebeccas mom was his daughter. She fell in Love with Dressrosas hero at the time. Kyros the mighty Gladiator. She fell in love with him got pregnant. Father expelled her from the palace asked DoFlamingo to help him punish Kyros. He couldnt by himself since Kyros was the strongest fighter on Dressrosa at that time. Flamingo comes in with his crew, cuts of Kyros leg and has someone in his crew make him into a toy. After that King Riku notices Flamingos bad character. With Kyros out of the picture Flamingo finds a way to take over Dressrosa.
In the flashback Toy Soldier says that through Rebeccas vains flows the same royal blood as in her mothers. We see that Rebecca and her mother live in a house and not the palace. Ricky during B Block makes a comment about the Prodense king as if he had running with his father Elisabello the first. This, his name, attitude, the short flashback in the catacombes and todays flshback pretty much confirm that he is old King Riku form my point of view. He doesnt have an injury, like Kyros is supposed to and he was to weak.
Soldier San has all the markers to be Kyros. Injury, strong fighter, relationship with Rebeccas mother, explains why the Rebecca and mom didnt live in the palace and so on.
