Maybe they did, but the toy soldier stopped them from progressing with it.
It's one of the few things he has left of his former life.
Or maybe the dwarves did. They clearly idolise him and likely wouldn't like it removed.

In the OP world we have special fruits that can make you do incredibly ridiculous and powerful things, but with the offset of the sea hating on you.
Why can't people like Whitebeard just be tall lol
Genetic engineering, bloody hell.
Hey, Oda is the one who introduced genetics and genetic manipulation in One Piece. The possibility of all kinds of weird crap happening during Void Century is still there. Devil fruits could also be remnants of that period.
@Light:
Yeah tall people are just tall. It's not any different from all the other odd features they have, like sharp teeth, horns and stuff. It's how Oda makes his characters disnictive.
What I said was possible is that there's a reason why there are all those different features. Oda can joke around as much as he likes but the PH arc opened some weird possibilities. Especially when there's an unknown ancient civilization in OP which was arguably more technologically advanced than current world. I don't see no warships capable of destroying entire world sailing around.
We already saw children being artificially enlarged and devil fruits being produced artificially. Who among you can claim with 100% certainty that people in the void century didn't do the same?
Thought so.

I seriously doubt Oda is going to explain something inconsequential, like Edward Newgate's height, with genetic engineering.
I seriously doubt Oda is going to explain something inconsequential, like Edward Newgate's height, with genetic engineering.
How do we know it's inconsequential? With all the different races in OP and all the weird looking people. I don't need to go into great lengths into explaining how good Oda is with world building. That should extend to the history of that same world, as well. Maybe big people are just big, and monkey looking people are just monkey looking people, but maybe there's a reason for that. It it was some other author, I wouldn't really think about it much, but with all the details Oda puts into the story, I can't not think about it.
I'm sure of one thing, though. Something nasty had to have happened in that Void Century, to make people destroy it and any information about it. Maybe they went over the line with technology, as Ancient Weapons thing implied. Maybe it was the same with genetics. Rayleigh said everyone should make their own conlusions, which could mean Ancient Kingdom could be considered a villain, depending on who reads Poneglyphs. It probably had a dark side, like WG.
I seriously doubt Oda is going to explain something inconsequential, like Edward Newgate's height, with genetic engineering.
esp when there is no need to explain it. In OP we have giants and dwarves, who are …what something like 1/10th scale of height compared to humans? Dwarves>humans>giants.
ODa has so far mde these differences seem normal. I see no reason why very tall humans like Whitebeard or Blenhiem (9th div. commander) need an excuse for their height.
Lets face it if they did, then it opens a can of worms that can ruin you enjoyment of the manga.
Need a 'real reason' why humans like Whitebeard is so tall? Well theen so does Usopp's nose ... don't forget the round red nose of Buggy. Or Kaku's square nose that is almost as long as Usopp's! Why does Bellamy have that barrel chest, big arms but teeny tiny - toothpick thin - legs?? Why is green, or even pink, hair? That not normal either.
and on and on and on and on and on and on
This is a manga, we-the readers- are expected to suspend disbelief at the seemingly bizarre stuff.
Because if we don't then the entire story falls apart.
So yeah, I agree with Robzilla, no need for genetic experiments to explain some random physical traits.

There a lot of freakishly proportioned and size people in OP.
It's a diverse world, it doesn't need an explanation.
That's why I think Whitebeard's size is inconsequential.
Of course something dark happened during the void century, I doubt it impacted on people's size though.

Cheers Katzztar.
You expressed it well as a can of worms.
Also , let's be honest scientific explanations for things that can just be left alone usually completely ruins mystique and/or coolness.
Just look at the midichlorian explanation for The Force in Star Wars.
The different sizes are obviously part of Oda's art direction.
I'm sure he doesn't want stuff like proportions limiting his creative vision.

Yes, this is a manga, in which we already had a scientist experiment on making humans bigger. I'm not pulling it out of my ass, you know.
Don't see why we couldn't have both people who have big noses or shrooms growing out of their chins for no reason but also people who are ridiculously big for a reason.
Anyway, don't really care about human sizes, got used to that a long time ago. This genetic tampering thing is just a theory that's been inhabiting my mind for quite a while now. When I follow a story, I think about it a lot. I don't just read it and take it for granted. There really is nobody here who can convince me it's impossible that humans started becoming weirder right after the Void Century.
I agree, though, it could take away from the story. It's a different cathegory than midichlorians. If Oda were to explain Haki scientifically, that would be a different pair of shoes, though.
All this talk made me remember devil fruits. It always puzzled me how Paramecia fruits were different than other fruits. Logia and Zoan contain an essence of a creature or a substance that are found in nature. But Paramecia give ability to transform into artificially made objects, like springs or wheels and even to turn people into toys. Someone explain that. And keep in mind, with how scientific Oda went about SMILES, it will hardly be explained with "it's just like that".

Of course, but maybe there's more to that.
I repeat, maybe. It's not like I'm convinced I'm right about this. So there's no need to try to convince me otherwise.
I think the biggest evidence of weird face- and body types being just design choices is the fact that we saw them so rarely at the beginning. Of course there were some bizarre features like Buggy's and Usopp's noses but they were far in between. One would possibly argue that it's because it was set in East Blue instead of Grand Line but take a look at people like Porchemy, Dadan or Bartolomeo! They came from East Blue too and they look still just as bizarre as any current OP character!

Since we have artificial Devil Fruits now, I for one believe that Devil Fruits in general are some advanced scientific innovation from that ancient kingdom. So there could be easily some man-made-stuff involving powers too.

I started thinking like that around the time we found out about ancient civilization and how advanced it was.
I could buy that Logia and Zoan are natural occurences, maybe, but Paramecia? Not a chance.
I guess Zoans are the easiest to make artificially, since it's easier to put in a DNA of a living creature into the fruit's genetic code. How the fuck do you put light or magma into a fruit? Or an obscure ability to turn people into toys and make them obey your commands? That's just crazy.
Part of me doesn't want it ever being explained.
Randomly looking through the wiki and noticed this quote by Bellamy:
**"**The Lost city of Gold!? The Emerald city!? The great Treasure of "One Piece"!? The fools who go looking for their "dream treasure" cannot notice what's in front of them! In this era of the sea the ones that do not have real strength… are the ones that are killed by their own imaginations! "
(too lazy to search for the chapter it was said in)
In the same way that Ussop's lies are an Oracle prediction, what and where is this Emerald City? and when (if at all) we might come across it? Were there any more hints of such a thing?

Well it was theorised before when we saw some of Kaido's subordinates looking a lot like The Scarecrow, Tin Woodsman and Cowardly Lion that Kaido might have a Wizard of Oz theme in some way.
So the "Emerald City" would probably fit into that if it's correct.

There was a emerald city in the magical Oz!!!!
The subordinates fitting The Scarecrow, Tin Woodsman and Cowardly Lion would be Scotch and who else?

It is quite of a stretch for the lion, but the other two are more possible.

Good idea, While Buggy's nose hasn't changed at all, Usopp's has. Usopp is the best candidate to show that these bizzare body proportions are an artistic choice.
He has changed from what he first introduced as = nose wasn't as long, was thinner and the tip was more pointed than round!
And it was not over a long period Oda changed Usopp's nose, Usopp classic look was cemented long before ch.100.Other thing that would change over time were still the same.
Doubtless, Usopp's nose was the first artistic style change he did, making it clear it was a design choice.
[hide]CH.e 23

By CHe ee41 Usopp's nose tip was start to round out and be less pointy. It often looked the length wee are accustomed with but was often seen as still really thin.

CH. 43, the nose tip often is still leans to pointy
[hide] [/hide]
it looks the classic Usopp nose. So it only took nearly 25 chapters and by the 50th chapter that Oda fully changed Usopp's nose.

Recently i was looking at this particular arc depicted in the pic above and realize that Ussop nose resembled is mother. Sometimes reading over the manga you realize somethings you never see before like for example king Riku mentioning the name of the king of prudence in is thought bubble while on the ground when is name was mention in the arena, if i was reading deeper then maybe it would have cross my mind that they knew each other just saying.

Yeah, I don't think some other fans realize that because they start with watching the anime, then read the manga and some people miss the eearly chapters.
At first Usopp looked like he only had an inch or two longer nose than his momma's but had same shape. Over time it was lengthened and rounded out. Makes me wonder what Banchina would look like in Oda's current style.
Also Banchina looked a lot like Kiwi & Mozu, wonder if she would like an older version of them with straight hair??
When they first met Franky the Sisters had their hair in an afro steyle but in the current square style se see that Mozu's hair isn't as curly as Kiwi's. Theere is a pic form the anime of them young and Mozu really looks like Banchina.

Tougher bodies, improved AI, stronger lasers, etc.
Maybe more devil fruit power is incorporated just like Kizaro fruit
Am I the only one who thinks it's wrong for the dwarves to just steal stuff from the citizens? If I lived on Dressrosa and had to deal with that, I'd enslave the little fuckers too. I'd hit them with a spiked whip infested with AIDS. And when they need food and water, I would piss on it before giving it to them. Hell, maybe I'd feed them to each other.

The king was the one to say they could do so. If you want to blame someone blame the king. Since the Dressrossians don't care I don't care either. They are way too stupid to survive proper interactions with humans so the deal seems pretty fair to me.

This is even coming from a guy who's avatar character specialises in flaying people alive.

Even if that's little harsh I kinda agree. Dwarfs can easily plant any food they need so there's no need to steal any useless knicknacks. Especially since Dressrosa used to be so poor before Doffy came! :getlost: Besides if any annoying midget stole my video games I would feed them do my dog!
Then again, this is a pirate manga. Not the first time "heroes" have done something morally ambiguous.
I want the number of the chapter when Sanji’s group last appeared
Chapter 730! I miss Pekoms as well…
So, I was wondering…
We know that the opposite element can hurt Logia. But... do they make them tangible?
I mean, for example... If we set Aokiji sleeve on fire, could he simply cut his arm of, with it falling down along with the fire, then growing back, or would he actually lost it if doing so?

What do you mean by the opposite element?
I mean when have we seen an example of the opposite element hurting a logia (I'm probably overlooking something really obvious).
Anyway, moving past that, no, it wouldn't make the person receiving the blow tangible, it would just hurt them regardless of the form they were in.
ie Sakazuki's powers "burn even fire", as such they harmed Ace even when he was in flame form, they didn't make him tangible and hurt his "real" body.
There should be some advantages/disadvantages among logias. Like Enel being able to hurt Crocodile, Aokiji being able to hurt Caribou, Ace being able to hurt Aokiji or Monet, stuff like that.
But it comes down to Oda and how he portrays it. For example Aokiji fought Akainu for 10 days even though he had an obvious elemental disadvantage. There isn't an example good enough to give an answer to Darth's question. Aokiji's hand might be hurt, or he could avoid the damage if he reacts fast enough.
No, I think we have a couple good examples already. Luffy was able to force Croc into tangibility by getting him wet. He also forced Enel into tangibility with his rubber fists.
I say that in the case you mention, Aokiji would lose the arm. It is probably why he lost his leg to Akainu.
Perhaps just setting the sleeve on fire isn't enough, but I imagine actually cutting the arm off with like a flaming sword would probably do the trick.
My 2c, anyway.
Yeah Croc's case is a bit misleading in that sand, when wet, becomes somewhat solid. I can't think of another Logia that would behave similarly.
Well, here's kind of an opposite case: I imagine that drying Caribou out would make him tangible. Almost like he and Croc are opposite elements.
Perhaps the reason Aokiji and Akainu were so evenly matched is because Aokiji is sort of Akainu's weakness in that cooling him off should make him solidify/become tangible. And vice versa, Akainu would be able to hurt Aokiji by melting his ice or whatever.
Yeah, actually, Aokiji is a really weird case where his element is already solid, so it's a little hard to think about how melting his ice would make him MORE tangible. I dunno.
There's also that Magma beats Fire thing.
There's also that Magma beats Fire thing.
I always thought that made a lot of sense, actually. The magma could be smothering the fire, forcing Ace into tangibility, then burning the shit out of him.
Yeah Croc's case is a bit misleading in that sand, when wet, becomes somewhat solid. I can't think of another Logia that would behave similarly.
Isn't Enel's case the same? His body becomes solid when in contact with Luffy's rubber body that prevents eletricity from being conducted. Or do you mean something else?
ie Sakazuki's powers "burn even fire", as such they harmed Ace even when he was in flame form, they didn't make him tangible and hurt his "real" body.
Well, in that case I imagine as the magma smothers the fire, the "real" body comes back and gets burned by the magma all the same. Like Benjamminbrown said.
Why do people assume that Aokiji is weak to magma and thus fought against Akainu with a disadvantage? Akainu can melt ice, but Kuzan could freeze his magma as well. Ace, on the other hand, is a completely different matchup with his intangible flames.
On top of that it's really hard to believe that they were fighting equally for 10 days while one is handicapped with an elemental weakness. Especially when Punk Hazard looks like this:
!
50:50, none of them could overwhelm the climate with their Logia.
I agree, Jabra. I think they were evenly matched because each is sort of the other's weakness.
Isn't Enel's case the same? His body becomes solid when in contact with Luffy's rubber body that prevents eletricity from being conducted. Or do you mean something else?
Basically with Croc you could drench him in water and then chop his arm off with an axe, whereas with Enel only the place the rubber is touching becomes tangible. Well, no, OK I guess if you put a rubber band on his arm and then cut perfectly down the middle of that rubber band you'd have the same effect. Rubber is just generally more difficult to constrain or cover someone with, I guess.

When pure physical strength is concerned Zoro might even be above Fujitora. But the latter probably beats him in Haki and experience, not to mention that nasty devil fruit. Strength doesn't always win.
I think the difference is not as big as Luffy vs Aokiji was back then.
Why is Drum Island called the island without a name when its name is Drum Island?
@Medical:
Why is Drum Island called the island without a name when its name is Drum Island?
It was Drum Island until Blackbeard destroyed it and drove Wapol out. The Kingdom lost its ruler and its name.
@Medical:
Why is Drum Island called the island without a name when its name is Drum Island?
It was the country without a name not the island without a name.
It did not have a political name, the island still had a name though.
Like how we have the island of Ireland.
But politically there are two governments on it.
The Republic of Ireland covers most of the island, and the United Kingdom territory of Northern Ireland covers part of the north.
Also the island of Taiwan exists, but the political government that rules it is the Republic of China.
And there's the land called the Korean peninsula, with two governments on it. The Republic of Korea and Peoples Republic of Korea.
So Drum Island is Drum Island. No matter who or what is running it or even if all the people leave. It's still Drum Island.
The Drum Kingdom though was ruled by Wapol's dynasty. That dynasty fled and the political future of the country was up in the air so it didn't have a name anymore, the country that is.
Eventually they settled on a new government that seems to be an electoral monarchy called the Sakura Kingdom.
For another OP example, Alabasta is the kingdom, but the island of Alabasta is actually called Sandy Island.
