So anyone besides me is excited about this movie. If you don't know about this movie. Its basically about these girls trying to escape from a mental insituation.
Here is the trailer.

Yea, it looks enjoyable.
It looks like it'll either be really fun or really stupid. But I don't think it will be genuinely good.
Will be there on opening night.
I'm feeling unsure about this movie. I really hope it's good.
Fingers crossed.
I too am unsure. The visuals, Japanese elements, and concept of fighting through a fantasy world of your own mind is all very appealing… but 300 was only good really the first time, and Watchmen was meh.
Could be a mindless fun. but I don't know, looks sink or swim.
I do want to see this, but it most likely won't be in theaters.
This looks like a good, WEIRD flick to watch with my sister. I'll definitely have fun with it, but I have a hunch that…
! …the ending will be rather depressing.
Forgive my ignorance, but was this movie based or adapted off of something? I mean entirely, not in inspiration.
From what I know, the movie isn't based on anything.
Just saw the trailer on T.V. think I might actually go to the theatres to see this one.
I really dig the visual style of Zack's movies.
When I saw the first trailer like a month or so ago, the visuals for the movie is one of the main reason that I wanted to see it.
At first I thought this WAS base don something, because I had heard of it before. Couldn't place where, but I knew I heard of this.
Then I remembered where; this shit has been in development for-fuggin'-ever. 2007 is the earliest I can remember, might be earlier.
Think it looks awful as fuck but that's just me
I just really don't like this dude's style
I saw the trailers and it looks… like fun. But that usually goes away when you see that 75% of the movie is wasted on brooding and overly drawn out conversations about nothing(just to tease you while you wait for action).
Supposedly the whole movie takes place in an insane girl's mind, and is her metaphorical struggle to escape the asylum she's in and come back to reality. Or something like that.
Make of that what you will.
Girls journey through her mind to become the ultimate sex object

Couldn't help it.
!
! SOOOOOOOO AWESOOOOOME!
When I saw the first trailer like a month or so ago, the visuals for the movie is one of the main reason that I wanted to see it.
I remember when the first trailer came out, my Organic and Hard Surfaces Modeling instructor (Maya, 3D Modeling) said it was loosely based off Through the Looking Glass.
Which at first I didn't see it at all, but the whole in your mind and the metal robot rabbit is making me see it a little.
It looks…interesting. I don't think it'll be worth a second see, but fuck, I'll watch it.
I'm pretty let down. I was hoping for more, but it at least had good action. The opening segment with no dialogue was excellent, but it fell apart for me after that and just became something to watch for the pretty effects.
@Syan:

That's about the only thing I expected when I saw all of the advertisements for this movie.
20% on rotten tomatoes last time I checked.

Hey. It's not the worst rated anyway. Red Riding Hood is doing worse….unsurprisingly.
This is getting ripped apart, some saying it's an embodiment of everything that's wrong with cinema today. Can't say I'm surprised.
bummer…was hoping this would be fun in a 'worth watching once' sort of way. Now I am doubting my instincts. Damn you Snyder!
I think it's definitely something you should see at least once. I went in expecting a bad movie and was pleasantly surprised with what I got. My friends and I had a lot of fun with it.

Critics are being a little too elitist about the film, they don't seem to understand that Zach Synder is just aiming for style, not substance he isn't trying to make a deep movie. If anything Synder is just making a shallow action film with a visually pleasing style to it and nothing more and it should be viewed as just that. Mindless, styled fun films–guilty pleasures.
Now I have been critical about Zack's style, especially when he adapts something like Watchmen(which has substance) he adheres too much to the source and fuses his style of film-making it becomes bloated; otherwise I think this film is alright, purely on being visually creative and having some nice action choreography(which is Synder's forte).
I predict Synder will surprise his critics with the new Superman reboot coming up.
Are you trying to fit Superman into your aesthetic, or change your approach to fit the Superman mythos?
I feel like, I mean I've said to the studio that this will probably be the most realistic Superman movie ever made. It takes place in the real world much more than [my previous films]… I mean, I've just never had the subject matter that needed that, you know what I mean? Like everything I've done up to this point really has the benefit of existing in a stylized world. It's fun for me that the most realistic movie, the movie that I'd say I'm making in the most realistic way of any movie I've ever done is a movie called Superman! That's kinda fun!
"Style, not substance" is a defense I often hear for films that are just "supposed to be popcorn films, turn off your brain!"
But I don't think these people realize how awful a film can still be and that "style" can be horribly done, just as it was here. Like I say about 300, there are so many ways to do it wrong and Zack Snyder just knows how to do it. I am also pretty sure right now that he's kind of an asshole, or at least makes asshole movies, because his films are just all around 100% "man cave" and represent so many lame, backwards concepts
Earlier I jokingly said this film was a girl's quest in her mind to become the ultimate objectified sex fantasy or something I forget how I worded it
I was kind of right???
Sucker Punch more like
… Fucker.... Dumb
That's what it should be called

The premise is pretty stupid, but I like Zach's style now of course It could be argued if he took the right approach but I knew what I was going to see when I saw the trailer and knew what Synder was doing, and I kinda went for it because of it's visual aesthetic. I kept my expectations really low so that helped a lot.
Like I said its really a guilty pleasure….
Also what part of Zach's style you don't like Holy Heil?
I have gripes with his style like when he is adapting something with substance like Watchmen and he damages the adaption with his bloated and downright ridiculous cartoony hyper violence on what supposed to be an adaption on a gritty work.
Are we really THAT surprised that the movie is bombing critically?
It's not like he has good source material this time around.
I can only HOPE the Superman story he adapts is decent, otherwise Supes is going to be gone from the movies for a looong time.
A lot of critics are saying stuff like "It's basically five video game bosses rolled into one".
Question for those who've seen it: Is that a bad thing, for nerds such as ourselves?
I was reading Empire magazine ( I think that was the one… it's the same one where Bill got the quote from), and I couldn't help but facepalm at one of Snyder's comments:
(Not an exact word for word quote, but it went along the lines of this)
"I would watch a movie and think 'This is boring, when do we get to see the sex and action?' which is why in Sucker Punch, I intend to make it come fairly soon in the movie!"
@Holy:
Like I say about 300, there are so many ways to do it wrong and Zack Snyder just knows how to do it.
300 was perfect, after watching horrible representations of ancient Greek myth/story like Troy, Hercules the legendary journey, DTV The Iliad and The Odyssey; 300 was the first film of its kind that didn't leave me bored or regretting the past 2 hours of my life. It actually made history fun rather than the typical boring Elizabethan theatrics that have taken over any story predating Jesus.
It's looks monumentally fucking stupid on every level, and sounds even stupider when you read what the plot is.
There's a point where appealing to your lowest common denominators reaches a level of it just being the equivalent of having the director creepily try to get to second base with you.

I have a monumental urge to kill you right now like none I've ever felt before.
What's your opinion on Synder as a director Jerk?
He's an idiot who others should use as the visual tool he is.
I still can't get over that Reffii post. It's like he wanted to create the ultimate "piss Zephos off' post.
Hey yall let's make something insanely infuriating for people with backgrounds in creative writing and history.
He's an idiot who others should use as the visual tool he is.
I might killed for this, but I still think Watchmen is his worst film. Look at my critique in 'overrated movies' thread for my reasons..
im not surprised at the reviews

much better movie

It's funny that someone as shallow as this guy was the director of one of the deepest comics ever.
Zach Synder has no talent as an actual storyteller, why is anyone surprised that his first work without an exisitng comic book or movie to follow isn't any good? He's a decent visual guy, but even then he only has a couple tricks in his arsenal.
Look at how completely he missed the entire point of Watchmen. Sure he got the look right, but, everything else?

Yeah yeah, Gi Joe was great popcorn, we get it. And Transformers 2 absolutely deserved the gillions of dollars it made, and Jurassic Park 3 is fantastic.
I HATE THAT EXCUSE WITH A PASSION.
"Lol, its just a popcorn movie" or a "guilty pleasure" isn't any excuse for a movie being terrible and having no narrative or substance whatsoever. You SHOULD feel guilty for supporting it. It tells Hollywood its okay to make more just like it.

I would have wanted Paul Greengrass to direct, or Terry Gilliam…
Then I realized they would diverge from the comic(which several fans would have bitched about endlessly.
Look at what Watchmen could have become if Paul directed it.

The thing is, ONLY Snyder could have made Watchmen. I'm not saying others couldn't have done it better, because others could have. Easily. But the man came off the success of 300, a comic adaption, and Sin City had hit recently, and thats why he was given the go ahead do do a 150 million dollar R rated movie. Its pretty amazing it didn't get knocked down to PG-13. The clout of one bad movie let him make the next. I
The biggest flaw for me in Watchmen, aside from the crappy new ending and the omission of most of Rorschach's origin (strongest part of the whole book), was how Snyder just plain didn't "get" the material. (I didn't care that the pirate comic book was missing, that only worked in the comic, and having it in the extended edition was just wierd.)
These were supposed to be (physically) ordinary people putting on tights, endangering themselves, and beating people up for no sensible reason. It was meant to be a "realistic" deconstruction of vigilantes and superheroes, yet Snyder has them effortlessly shattering bones, moving at superspeed, and knocking people 20-30 feet with a punch or a kick as if they have superpowers just because it looked cooler that way.
Then there's the ending that just "feels" wrong and the "Nothing ever ends" quote being spoken to the wrong person at the wrong time by the wrong character to totally rob it of meaning.
By going for the cool visuals in spite of the story, the meaning got butchered. It was all surface. Once you get past the novelty of the shot for shot recreations, the depth that made the book resonate just wasn't there.
This guy is a SFX guy. I give him credit in that he makes some pretty visually arresting stuff. The problem is that he is lacking in the "everything else it takes to be a good director" department.

I agree and say that it isn't a complete argument to excuse a terrible film, but I feel the critics have been railing to the ground a lot(it's a really easy film to bash)
. But I kinda enjoyed it for what it was, and turned my brain off and enjoyed Zach's interesting visual style and even if he attempting to tell a plot it would end up not being very good. …It's really a film you can just view once, also from the start when I watched the trailer I knew what I was expecting.

The best Watchmen view yet in this thread.
Here's my view, if anyone is interested.

While I agree that that's not that much of an excuse, sometimes it's good to just watch a movie for style only. I think there are too many of those types of movies out these days but the occasional one I like.

Hey. If you turn your brain off, watching paint dry is pretty awesome.
Its a horrible excuse, stop using it.

Same for me. There are certain movies that go for style alone and can be incredibly fun to watch(Dead Leaves is my recent animated example). Then there those that aren't as fun… like Avatar. There's nothing worse than falling asleep during action sequences, or scenes that try to portray a emotional connection with the characters. Maybe I was expecting that film to be more about the adventure rather than a boring interracial conflict.
