You know, I'd be lying if I said Oda was not one of the first individual people I hoped was okay. The first I thought about was my best friend, who was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, with the marines. I was very happy to find out he was fine. It's natural to think of those who you do care about for whatever reason, individually. I hope Oda's fine, I hope Kishi's fine, I hope Kubo's fine. Not because of their writing, but because they are people. I hope Random Person A and B are fine as well.
I would love to hear that there would be no casualties, but it's not going to happen. I do hope that as many people as possible can survive the disaster, and continue on living. I hope the people are okay, not solely because of the fact that they would be fine, but also because of the people in their families who care about them, and the people and friends who care about them.
There are going to be families and friends who are hurt by the loss of their friends and family members. Panicking, relaxing, or whatever, it cannot stop a disaster from happening, nor can it save the people of the world. I can always say however, that I pray for their families and hope that they will be able to get through this with as little harm and difficulty as possible.
Will I be glad to hear Oda's fine? Of course. I'll be glad to hear anyone's fine. Is Oda going to be someone I think of? Of course, it's only natural to hope for those you care about. I just hope that after all is said and done, those that remain can continue on, and flourish. That the country of Japan, can rebuild itself, and that the countries around the world will show their compassion by helping in whatever way they can.
The fact that anyone could think solely about themselves or the idea of 2012 is appalling to say the least. 2012, is not going to happen, based on predictions. It definitely won't happen on December 21st, 2012 by predictions. It's still 2011, look toward the present, forget the future. Lest ye be lost in the chambers of self righteousness and greed. These are real people, with real hopes, dreams, and ambitions. Real people who are loved and cared about by their friends and families.
I do not base this on my beliefs as a Christian but on my heart as a human.

I'm 40 miles away from the nearest beach, but I must admit that I am still worried about it.
It doesn't help that I've often wondered how a tsunami might affect my state and that I don' really know how far those big waves can reach.
And the bodies washing ashore is pretty god damn horrible.
EDIT: In retrospect, 40 miles is a decent enough distance, but still it would suck to get hit.

I'm sure this sort of thing has been said before time and time again, but it still holds true: I'm glad that this age of mass electronic communication allows us to follow events like these as they unfold in real-time. It's easy to remain apathetic when something is removed from you. I myself have never been through a major natural disaster, but seeing these news reports and footage that's being circulated, it really puts things into prespective and how small we really are. Praises to all the folks who are doing the best they can to assist their fellow man during this crisis.

The USA dispatched several cargo planes with cooling agents in order to get the reactor at Fukushima under control. Here's hoping they will be able to prevent any further damage, a meltdown would be a disaster on a whole another level.
Germany also sent troops from the THW (the local disaster relief organisation) to Japan. I just hope those people will receive help soon enough and the death toll will stay low, their crisis management is already amazing enough.

Also the number of dead keeps rising... its just so sad, 2 trains are missing, 300 dead more than 500 missing and many injured. Japan is "lucky" to have such a history with earthquakes and that their buildings are built to widthstand it, otherwise i can't evne imagine the amount of damages that would have done.

I think this is it.
I just came home and through a series of mentionings on random newslines and image board posts learned about that catastrophe. Watched the news and what can I say… I'm saddened. Usually I'm not really touched by tragedies, I'm like: "That's sad, sad, but well, I can't help them - I am on the other side of the world." But that time I got touched by their tragedy. I felt that they are humans too, just like me. And they got that challenge for survival...
Long and confused thoughts short - I felt feelings for total strangers. And that is unusual.
And I will not lie - the first person I thought about was Oda. I hope he is okay. That's not because comics and bla-bla. No. For me he is like a close relative.
Perhaps I care about Japan through him, I don't know.

Guys, calm down. There's not going to be a nuclear disaster. Contrary to what alarmists and Hollywood and the Simpsons try to make you believe, nuclear reactors aren't these monstrous uncontrollable things that need to be calmed down at every moment. The reactor's probably (as in 99% likely) been "turned off" (as in filled to the brim with boron and disconnected from the turbines) whilst maintenance and repairs occur. The core hasn't been damaged at all. It is literally impossible for nuclear melt-down to occur at this point.

A magnitude 6.6 quake has now struck in central Japan, AP news agency reports, causing Tokyo buildings to sway. It is not clear if this is connected to the earlier quake and aftershocks.
