9.0 earthquake hits Japan

Well, casualty count is amazingly low considering it's been reported to become one of the largest earthquake to hit populated area in history.

We're used to this shit.
If this was another part of the world, casualty count would be ten fold.

Yes, as I said before, I'm amazed at Japan's awareness. Half of this would mean end of the world here and I mean it; whenever we're hit by an earthquake, you can count on the horrible news on TV because of the mistakes people do during the shock.

I just hope and pray it doesn't get any worse in Japan and other areas.

Edit: Just saw that breaking news. Hope the people there are alright…

This has had such a big effect on me. I feel devastated for them. I actually cried at that Disneyland Tokyo image.

8.9 quake hits two of Japan's prefectures, Miyagi and Fukushima, and submerges Sendai Airport. And then an Oil Refinery explodes. We saw the great ball of fire it caused on TV; it was harrowing. Then you get Hawaii struck, and now everywhere from Ecuador, to California Bay to Southern Alaska on Tsunami watch.

Only on Tuesday, we had our final lesson of Japanese. If we had more, it would have been a very awkward experience. I hope my Teacher isn't affected too much. I don't know if she still has relatives in Japan.

I've even heard people saying the Mayan 2012 prediction is coming true from this. Sure as hell don't believe it, but the thought is creepy.

Wow... I can't even imagine such a horrible earthquake. I experienced an earthquake myself, in 1992, when I was a little girl. It was a 5,5 eartquake and as far as I'm concerned, nobody died here in Gemany.

But an 8,9 earthquake is something completely different.

The latest I heard was that the plant had been shut down and anybody within 3km of it were being urged to evacuate. Updates throughout the country have been ok but coverage about the plant situation have been pretty vague for me.

First my condolence for the families in japan. I'm in indonesia and right now i'm still wondering will the tsunami hit here. Although the warning only says east indonesia only.
Second, i hope Oda is allright and well. Also to Kishimoto and Kubo.
Third, I can understand if all mags will postpone indefinetly, Just not too long i hope.

I've been following the news about this tragedy since this morning. Really really scary to see what's going on in Japan and I'm hoping that the nation gets through this.

I don't even care if the upcoming spring anime season gets delayed because of this tragedy. The lives of the people of Japan come first before their pop culture.

This is a real tragedy. 8.9 is absolutely monstrous. I am very glad Japan has the technology and security codes and responses in place to handle this (as well as any country could) though. Stay safe!

Good news regarding the fate of Japan's nuclear reactors: the World Nuclear Association says it understands the cooling problems at the damaged Fukushima plant is "under control".

Things turn out for the better. Fukushima's nuclear plant had the more serious problem, while in Onagawa was a fire in turbine hall which isn't as dangerous.

Nuclear reactors are built to withstand massive earthquakes, floods and even airplane slammings. Wouldn't want another Chernobyl on top of everything else after all.

This is really terrible and truly something to be afraid of.

I really hope things will get better over there and that I wish for safety of those affected by it.

This is nasty of an event and quite honestly, my words are what I kind of wanted to say but let's face it, saying that kind of stuff is not going to fill up what you intended to express as something awful as this is happening because it's been used so many times.

It's still gives you a bit of comfort to know help from others is coming.

However, the shindo scale varies in number depending where you are, whereas with the Richter scale, a given earthquake is assigned a single number.
