I completely agree with Refii. At this point, FFVII is one of the most over-hated games ever. Why's that? Because it's popular?
I might be alone on this, but the way I see it, whenever it becomes more popular to bash an "overrated" game than to praise it, it's no longer overrated. To me, "overrated" is when fanboys easily outnumber haters, or when something gets so much praise that the fanbase cries blasphemy if you say anything against it.
SQUARE ENIX - Single Player RPGs are dead?

-
Well for one thing it helped introduce the real Final Fantasy games to the US ;)
No it didn't. :P
All it really did for that aspect was make people realize that RPGs were worth trying out, seeing as how the genre had a small market outside of Japan.
The reason we didn't see FF2, FF3 or FF5 in the US was mainly due to the time it would take to translate them, as well as releasing them on a platform that was relevant at the time. FF2 and 3 had both issues, and by the time they could release a new one, Nintendo was shifting focus on the SNES, so other companies followed suit as they felt they wouldn't profit from releasing main franchises on what was basically an obsolete console (which is why Nintendo didn't release the first Mother title as well as Capcom not releasing Mega Man 6 both in the US).

The experience, at the time, was amazing.
bullshit, greg. i played the game less than a year after initial release and was bored stupid almost immediately. and it wasn't the transition from action games to rpg since i had moved from super mario rpg, to ff vi, to ff vii. i kept waiting for it to take off and enthrall me and once they left midgar, i expected it to happen…only the game went downhill completely after that.
i remember getting that saturday morning monster hunt feel even as a 12 yr old! the guy nailed it. the gameplay wasn't anything near revolutionary or amazing and even the battle system felt like a step back from theprevious one. so all that was left is the cg cutscenes, which i didn't care about because they were completely superfluous to the overall story and just action scene wanks, and the 'story' which was convoluted scifi garbage the likes of which would make a scifi tv movie blush.
it felt like a totally forgettable and disappointing experience less than halfway through. i actually remember feeling like i was playing some half-assed annoying anime series and ignoring the game for nearly a year before having the will to complete it. low and behold, years later HERALDED AS A FUCKING CLASSIC. still, it's an opinion and obviously subjective. i'm definitely not the only one who felt this way. and the reviewer even says that ffvii was his first ff and favorite rpg of all time...until he picked up anthology and played better rpgs in the series and better rpgs in general. so 'for the time' is a moot point. you can play ffvi today and it holds up in every aspect except graphics.
hell, i played ffiv a year or two ago and it became my 2nd favorite in the series! the original mgs still holds up and feels superior to subsequent games imho.
I dislike how all these self proclaimed "exxxperts of gaming" have annoying nerd voices.
Fucking gay nerdfheg with his ghey voice i judge opinions based on whether or not the reviwer sounz liek james bond or knot
what the hell does someone's voice have to do with jack shit? also…the title is misleading. i apologize if it confused you, but it isnt a series review and break down of the game. it's a 'calling fanboys out on this mediocre, overhyped bullshit video'. it's pointing out the flaws and misconceptions(intelligently) and nothing more.
also JOKE! also, LUL he didnt claim to be a 'gaming expert'. did it hurt when you pulled that shit out of your ass? lighten up.any sports game fan can quickly turn around and say "I don't want to play that kiddy bullshit Xenogears, what am I 4?"
and what a valid argument that would be. i really hate those fucking philosophical, well-written, religion questioning games involving graphic deaths, brutality, complex narratives and characters…FOR FOUR YEAR OLDS. god, when fei fong wong slaughters the love of his life because the church is manipulating them it reminded me of that same scene from sesame street...
or anything else that ends up revolutionizing the world into change
now you're just a foaming fanboy. i wont even argue past this point. 'revolutionized the world into change'??? holy shit…it was the same as the games that came before it, with shittier writing, anime archtypes, and flashy cg sequences. NOTHING MORE. people bought it because of the mediahype thrown behind it upon release. i knew so many people who bought it AND NEVER PLAYED IT for more than an hour because they were brainwashed by the commercials as children. if you enjoyed it, fine. but it was nothing special in any aspect other than introducing cg movies and bishounen into the rpg world..which was a detriment if you ask me. but it's a teasing video pointing out flaws. dont take it so damn seriously.
y;know screw it. you're right. ffvii is a classic. transformers 2 is a triumph of cinematic genius.
bleach is the shit. She tried slitting her wrists.
did she really? what the hell happened there?
SE ruined the franchise by sticking its claws into the series' heart and raping it repeatedly for self-gratification.
because it wasn't a shameless amalgamation of every teeny-bopper trend to begin with? yeah, shallow bishies posing with giant weapons and crying in corners was gripping, poignant experience. the video is totally biased towards storytelling, clearly. and it's hard not to be with ffvii because the gameplay was nothing stellar or unique unless you've never played an rpg before it.
i can totally respect saying that it's not that great or perfect or it does have TONS OF FLAWS,but i like it. the characters and stories are about as unique and compelling as a current bleach chapter. i can respect bleach fans that just admit to liking melodramatic wanking or just posing with giant weapons and that shit than people who claim IT'S A REVOLUTION or GENIUS or something. whenever i ask ffvii to explain the story to me, they can't. whenever i ask them to explain why ffvii is so great, they either say 'omg the cgs were so fucking cool at the time' or 'well, everyone says it's the best, right?" it's always the same empty answers. people who bash it can always seem to eloquently POINT OUT all its flaws and explain why this dislike it and give reasons of substance to like other rpgs.
-
^ Wow… This is a joke, right?
-
^nope, FF7 is serious business.
-
i honestly haven't seen tons of ffvii bashing.
i still see people raving about what an amazing fucking classic it is and biting your head off if you say different. i have no problem with a popular game of some level of quality. but i dont feel like it was unique at the time for anything besides introducing cg cutscenes, because i've seen every single other thing in ffvii done in previous game and rpgs done a LOT fucking better.i never once liked the game back when i played it in 1998 and at the time i ONLY played rpgs. i didnt find it fun, because what i liked about rpgs was the story and characters and that's what ffvii is lacking more than anything else. also, fanboys seem to thing cloud is the cool, badass simply because he has the phallic blade, but bash characters like sasuke in naruto WHEN THEY'RE THE EXACT SAME CHARACTER.
Wow… This is a joke, right?
…no?
people keep smirking and going 'come on, guy. didnt you love it AT THE TIME? come on..when you FIRST played it, wasn't it amazing tho?" well, no. i hated it and bashed it in 98 and people would get so enraged they'd scream over you or just dismiss everything you say with clever retorts like 'cloud iz fuking cool. he could kick your asz wit dat sword, man'. if people are bashing it more now, it's because enough time has finally passed for you not to be labeled a lunatic for not wanking to it. -
I probably didn't play as many RPGs as you back when I first played ff7, so it was pretty unique for me. The only other RPG i'd played before that was Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG.
And don't say "You went from Chrono Trigger to FF7 and didn't see how crappy it was?!!!"
nope, back then I was younger and I never really compared and criticized everything like I do now. The thought of NOT playing the game because there were better RPGs NEVER crossed my mind. Yeah, I was exposed to it through the mainstream advertising, but through that I then developed a stronger love of RPGs and that began my search for more. And through that search, I found one of my favorite classics, yup, Xenogears (some of the finest RPG story telling).
I liked Cloud. To me, he was more of an Anti-hero who kicked butt rather than an Emo kid. To be honest, I just didn't look for the negative like most people do nowadays.
Simply put. Yeah it's overrated, but I had a LOT of fun with it back when I was a kid.
-
let me blow your mind by also saying…"i dont see what the big deal with chrono trigger is'.
it honestly seemed like the less annoying ffvii of its time - mostly popular based on graphics and a unique fighting engine. both of which, didn't age as well. i mean, i like the 2d art and I LOVE the music, but it didn't stand out as particularly memorable. nice concept that didn't really add much to the gameplay in the end. characters were cute, but a bit shallow imho, too.also, like i said, this is a rant video. and there is a followup explaining some of the replies gotten from the first video.

LOL, I thought you were going to say something like that.

I actually realized this after I recently beat the game on DS. All the characters are maxed out and I haven't touched the game since. But like my earlier point, it was fun when I was younger. So I give it that credit.
@Ao:
also, like i said, this is a rant video. and there is a followup explaining some of the replies gotten from the first video.
The follow up does make his cause more plausible. He should have made some of those points in the first vid. I think I myself was an FF7 fanboy for about two years too… youch!
Also I will give him props for mentioning Mischief Makers. (which was ruined by one of my older brother's friends when they used the cartridge for a fucking coaster!)
-
Part of Chrono Trigger's charm was its replayability in terms of getting multiple endings. Not to mention, the battle system was pretty damn awesome considering not many RPGs allowed you to learn techniques depending on who you had in your team.
Also, the whole character death thing being shown in more than just sprites has been done before via the Phantasy Star series, which used pixel art/comic book-style panels to illustrate everything occuring.
dE_jI1_xDF8
Skip over to 5:46 for an example. Another surprising thing is to see "Damn you" in an RPG around that time.
And for the death scene itself…

that one girl i mentioned in the bad day thread is OBSESSED with mischief makers - her favorite game actually. i still have my n64. i guess i should check it out, eventually.

(which is why Nintendo didn't release the first Mother title as well as Capcom not releasing Mega Man 6 both in the US).
Uh…they did release Mega Man 6 in the US, my cousins bought it on the first day it came out.
-
Capcom didn't publish it in the US like they did with the previous five; Nintendo did. That's why there's no Capcom logo on the boxart.
-
tsukento, are you surreptitiously just trying to get more ppl to play phantasy star IV?
because you convinced me. i'll play phantasy star IV -
It was fun. The plot was dire, but the materia system was quite good. Not a fan of all the tedious chocobo breeding necessary to get the strongest materia though. IX is better, as are a few others(IV, VI, VIII). A lot of people overrated it at the time, and quite a few underrate it now.
I much prefer stuff like Dragon Quest V, Shining force III and Panzer Dragoon Saga, but it was a nice 50 hour diversion back in the day.

Sounds like FFVII to me.
Case in point
-
I don't know if I have a valid opinion about FFVII, since it was the last 3D FF I played… and, maybe cause of that, it was the only one I didn't finish...
The first one was FFVIII, and till' this day, it was one of the most memorable games of my life, then FFIX, X and XII....all of which I kept coming for more, till my characters were at max level...then I decided I needed to play FFVII
FFVII was a burden to me, I tried to like it, I really tried...
-
Sounds like FFVII to me.

Lately, I've seen far more haters than fans, many of which are even more rabid. Case in point: post #15.
-
UNCONVENTIONAL OPINIONS MAKE YOU COOL AND SMART!
Wait… No they don't...
-
I'm not a big fan of FF7, but not because I'm joining the band wagon. I played it when it first came out. I was all excited. oh boy oh boy, a new FF after 6. this is gonna be great! and it has new 3D graphics. exciting.
It wasn't terrible, but it left me with a desire for more. At times it felt more like a chore to play. I was rather disappointed. then to see all these FF Narutard boys go gaga over it, like it's the best game in existence, is a little annoying.
-
Personally, I loved 7. The story was engaging, I liked the cast (MAH BOI CID), and it had a shit-ton of fun sidequests and things to do. Minigames were great (I'd often make return trips to the Gold Saucer to replay the bike chase and snowboarding moments), soundtrack was brilliant, it had it all. Except graphics… But hell, it's old, I can forgive it for that.
-
Whether you like ff7 or not, you cannot deny that Cid Highwind was THE BEST CID hands down!
-
ANyone who does deny it is a fool, or some kind of anti-fanboy desperate to diminish FF7 for the purposes of their ego trip. Otherwise they would know Cid Highwind was the fuckin' man!
Seriously, a FF protagonist that smokes, cusses like a sailor, is too old to be some prissy pretty-boy, tells everyone around him to shut the fuck up, already has himself a woman, and has a MAN'S dream!

It's clear Aokiji just doesn't LIKE the Game. Even something that's really good and gets deserving praise will have those who don't like it.
I don't like Stanley Kubric's 2001: A Space Oddysey. When I tell people, they tell me I'm crazy. I think the movie is really slow. Is it a bad movie? No, it's one of the greatest films ever made.
Now, is Final Fantasy VII the greatest game ever? No, that's just it's fanbase expressing how much they really love it. I think if anything, that designation belongs more to Zelda Ocarina of Time. But it's by no means Terrible, at all. It was a really good game, and it was the first game I'd ever played that was so long it took three CDs!
Does it have it's faults? Yes, of course, nobody and nothing's perfect. But it was a good game.I think anything else I could possibly said has already been said by Greg. Go back and read his post, he hit the nail directly on the head.
-
Aokiji fucks up another thread.
It's like his shtick.

lol attacking me for criticizing an overrated game you like.
clearly YOU are the unbiased voice of reason here.NOOO… Because you went batshit crazy.
-
Meh, I played FF7 and didn't really like it :ninja: . I had been hearing for years that it was the best game ever made and when I finally got around to play it I was severely dissapointed. Maybe I would've liked it more had my expectations not been so high :ermm: . Maybe it's because I usually don't like RPGs, though I do like some like Golden Sun. And I usually don't care about graphics, but for some reason FF7's graphics bugged me  . Please don't kill me.
-
NOOO… Because you went batshit crazy.
if that was batshit crazy then deltron is ritually sociopathic on this forum.
-
I think FFVII is kinda overrated. Like they say, Cloud is a bit emo, the story creates an interesting world and fairly interesting characters, and is a nice RPG but not much else. But that kinda "review" where youu call people who don't agree with you "fucking faggots" and such aren't… really credible. And I haven't heard of any of the games he said had amazing stories, but the story doesn't make the game either. This guy gave a really one sided commentary.
But I haven't played all of FFVII so, maybe I'm wrong. Crisis Core I played all the way through and really liked that story, though it doesn't go deep into a lotta other stuff in the original.
I don't think FFVII is a "fanboy" kinda game, just a bit overhyped. It's not like a crap game that people just decided they liked because of the name. It did have an interesting and fairly deep story despite its flaws. OOT had flaws, just harder to think of. Maybe because the main character doesn't have a personality, makes the story less "clearly one way".
This review though was way biased... Though he is right there ARE some really good games that never get much credit. Like The World Ends With You, though it has had a pretty fair following and sales. But hasn't had any word of a sequel, while Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy have had so many, though they're made by the same staff.
-
FF7 IS a good game.
FF7 does have an okay storyline.
FF7 is a lot of fun.
FF7 was one of several dozens of reasons PS1 was awesome. But not THE reason…However...I like hundreds of other games than FF7, including a few other FF games.
I really hate the 'emo' term.
-
FF7 is overrated
That's not to say it's not an excellent game.
-
I was about 14 when FF7 was released, played it till the end, but i honestly can't remember most of the stuff. I even got confused watching Advent Children.
In other hand, i played FF6 two years earlier - and it left an easily bigger impression on me. I recall even minor details of the game. I guess that says a lot. It's funny..back then, most people i knew used to say 7 was pretty good, but not as much as 6. Its popularity clearly grew up over the years, unlike the predecessor's.
-
7's been my favorite FF thus far. Fun to play, for starters, and I really liked the story. One of the biggest reasons, though, is the cast. Best cast in FF yet. I mean, for god's sake, it's got a big burly Mr. T-like black guy with a huge gun for an arm, a genetically altered pseudo-vampire who blows enemies away with a shotgun and turns into monsters, and CID FUGGIN' HIGHWIND! And don't forget the huge remote controlled plush doll!
-
I really should get around to playing FF7 some day, to see what all the fuzz is about.
-
your right man. can't knock it till you try it.
give it a try and see why people complain about it. XD -
Whether you like ff7 or not, you cannot deny that Cid Highwind was THE BEST CID hands down!
I dunno…the Cid in FFIV had a big red beard and was man enough to blow himself up with the intent of burying himself under tons of earthly rubble.
But yeah, it's definitely all in the beard.
Speaking of IV, is it just me or was Tellah the only one to bite the dust? And after he delivered such a performance (we will never forget that spoony bard). -
Pretty much. Though you wouldn't have thought so until the very near end of the game. It was assumed through the game that Rydia, the twins and Cid had all died until later on.
-
I like Final Fantasy VII but I never understood why it was hyped up in the first place so I thought it has something to do with the story. When I played it, the story was fine but not hype-worthy. I guess some people think the game is perfect and decided to bash it but I gotta say that these guys ar idiots because the game is not perfect.
For me my only gripping about this game is there is no secret challaging dungeons and some stronger weapons but the rest of the pie is still good.
-
Pretty much. Though you wouldn't have thought so until the very near end of the game. It was assumed through the game that Rydia, the twins and Cid had all died until later on.
Yeah, I mean IV's Cid was their equivalent of Pell and the twins just…got better?
Anyway, since this is a VII thread, I'll add my own opinion to it.
I bought it just to see what the big deal was. I thought it started off strong, especially the part where you're in the building and Jenova somehow breaks out of her chamber (I found that part to be really creepy). After Midgar, though, the game was still good, but it didn't really absorb me too much after that. I liked the Turk's part in the story and the theme park as well. For some reason, one part that really sticks out in my mind was the sequence where you have to get Tifa out of the gas chamber while the gas is still running. It just seemed really…intense. After a while, though, I got bored with leveling up and just went after Sephiroth after getting to level 70 something. The ending managed to confuse me a little, actually.
And yeah, to contradict myself somewhat, Cid was awesome. Plus he was a dragoon, and for some reason I tend to like those characters more than anything.
EDIT: I mean dragoon fighting style, not a dragoon warrior or anything. -
The ending should have been vincent turning into a monster and eating everyone.
-
Yeah, those random clips where they would show Jenova's body always freaked me out.
She's so nasty looking.
Sadly, her boss battles never looked as creepy.
-
Quick question: I've played the PS version of FFIV (the first re-release) after having so much trouble with an SNES cartridge, and I gotta say that I loved it. However, I bought the game just in time for the DS release to be announced (crap…). I have to ask--as a guy who loved the original version as it is, am I missing out on much with the DS added content? Also, is the After Years story as a whole good or just okay in your opinion?
With that out of the way, I feel compelled to state that there's not enough Zeromus love out there (I mean Sephiroth is cool and all, but come on, he looked a lot more cooler than some guy with three angel wings and a superhalo.) -
I always was confused at how they look at Jenova's body in the cutscenes (both in Shinra Tower and in the Nibelheim flashback) and she was roughly human size, but you fight her pieces and they become enormous monstrosities.
-
Zeromus was alright, but he came out of nowhere and his existance made no sense. One of the best fight musics in FF history, though.
Sephiroth's "final" form was awesome, though, because it was godly and angelic, yet dark and bizarre. Very slick aesthetic touch with that.
-
Simple; the pieces you fight were not Jenova. By that time, Sephiroth had essentially become Jenova, and those monstrosities were creatures made from Jenova's cells by him to fight you. Kinda like how all the times you see Sephiroth throughout the game, it's not him, but remote puppets made out of Jenova.
