Pixar movies

Having seen it again with adjusted expectations I have to say that they did play a large part in my dissapointment. Decent second viewing. Four things though:
- The triplets are insufferable to me, and their transformation detracts drama from the mothers.
- Mordu is MIA way too much
- Where the hell did the witch and her raven go? They were fun!
- What exactly is the movies title referring to? I can't think of Merida doing anything particularly Brave.
-
I always thought the part where Merida was willing to throw away her pride for the sakes of her family's tradition was brave of her. Because I kind of thought that was something she'd never let go due to her rebellions and yet, daringly adventurous nature. Then agian, that scene meant a whole lot to me personally. And I don't think I'll give much if it didn't for other viewers.
-
@The:

I thought they were fun. But yes, them ALSO being bears detracted.
- Mordu is MIA way too much
Practically a non-entity, really.
Where the hell did the witch and her raven go? They were fun!
The end credits.
What exactly is the movies title referring to? I can't think of Merida doing anything particularly Brave.
The Bear and the Bow? I think the title speaks for itself.
…Oh. You mean the changed title? Meh.
There weren't a whole lot of tangles in Rapunzel either!
But Frozen will surely... something something.
-
Actually, if you exchange the titles of Brave and Tangled, you get MUCH MORE honest titles for BOTH FILMS.
-
I don't quite understand the hate for Brave. I liked it just fine. (Yes, yes, it could be better, but I still think it's a good movie)
Guess it's just that curse of being in the Pixar canon and if it's not GREAT, it's dirt.
-
I like it too. But Im super mad that Pixar did not do their best for their first and(Thanks to the bad reception) probably last female protagonist.
-
God. I hate anyone that hyped the movie for that particular reason. A character is a freaking character. Putting too much emphasis into what traits makes an "amazing female character" just rubs me off as pandering and creepy.
-
I didnt want an "amazing female character". I just wanted a movie starring a girl THAT DIDNT SUCK.
-
-
Wow. That was nice of you. No, really. Its uplifting to see you just go "okay".
…..Weird.

Dude, she's totally got HUGE traits.
-
I love you guys. I really do.
-
Merida wasn't a bad character per se. She was just boring, derivative and underwhelming, not really any different from the rest of the Disney princesses. Instead of a fascinating, engaging, unique princess character, we got the same old same old right down to the "I want more" motivation.

Women always get shafted when it comes to being protagonists. When they do get a leading role, they're done terribly because the screenwriters have no idea how to write strong women (and this can go both for male and female screenwriters, either that or they're conforming to a Hollywood standard). Due to whatever odd circumstances, we've had a rat, a robot and an 80 year old man as the leads in a Pixar movie before a female (and yes, we've had two leads in WALL-E and whatnot, that's not the same) got the show all to herself so forgive us if we were hoping for something special from Pixar's vault of creativity. Yet what we got was pretty generic.
I mean it's fine to say "a character's a character, who cares about the gender" but when characters of aforementioned gender are never given a chance to take the lead and when they do they're usually done poorly either because the writer's idea of strong and empowering is to make them "dark and tortured" or perfect angels or just boring and bland for whatever reason, it becomes very frustrating. I can't speak for anyone else but for me personally, i don't want a female lead to jack off too, I want a female lead because I'm dying for a good one because it shouldn't be this hard to give.
-
I love you Thousand Lion Chan.
And Remy Could have been female, and it would have not changed A THING.
-
I didnt want an "amazing female character". I just wanted a movie starring a girl THAT DIDNT SUCK.
You need to watch more movies if you're gonna make a blanket statement like that.
-
Ok I'll rephrase.
I wanted a movie from Pixar about a girl THAT DIDNT SUCK.
EDIT: Okay, now that Herodotus was so kind to remind me of Movies Starring Girls That Dont Suck. I will now create a thread based on this principle.
EDIT: Darn! I cant make threads… Just watch this clip from Sailor Moon R:The Promise of The Rose instead.

Probably already exists, if you want to dig around.
I find Brave to be less of a "disappointing female lead" and more of a "disappointing movie in general". Even if the character was slightly more interesting, the plot buries any chance of her growing as a character as it is. If it was some reckless scottish guy as the lead, he'd still just be a bland blank slate of a character like Merida.
Plus, I still don't get why people think Brave sucks. It was pretty good; slightly disappointing, yes, but it was still enjoyable.
-
I COULD take the Incredibles if the Mom was the main focus, but sadly she isnt.
And Dory was more of a "Awesome female character who overshadows(But isnt) the main character"
So no.
And its sad, you cant even defend Brave.
-
I could like the Incredibles if the Mom was the main focus, but sadly she isnt. And I dont like the Incredibles.
Isn't the focus of the Incredibles the dynamic between the whole family? The stuff with Mr. Incredible is all build up to the actual story. I would say that Mrs. Incredible is just as much a star as Mr. Incredible, even if he gets half a movie.
And why don't you like the Incredibles? Honest question, by the way, not trying to push your buttons.
-
I dont like the dad. Something about him just irks me.
And thanks for asking nicely and kindly. ;) Not OMG Y U NO LIKE THE INCREDIBLES.
I think I got too steamy here. Sorry if I did, everyone. Didnt mean to be mean.
-
All the hate towards Merida just shows what expectations we have for a Pixar movie..which is kind of good but also ruins decent movies for some of us.
Its definitely not their strongest work, but i don
t see a problem why it cant be enjoyed because of that fact. The animation was stunning..but i would have loved to see even more of those beautiful landscapes. Felt like they put it all in the beginning and forgot about it later, which is a shame. The story about daughter mother relation isn
t as used for me as some seem to think it is or which movies am i forgetting?
That the mother was turning more and more to a real bear was a cool twist, but somehow that didn`t get enough attention in my eyes.
The side story was the best part in my eyes, but to be honest a bit rushed and so easy to forget(how the "villain" turned to a bear)^^About Merida as a character..i guess most memorable she will be for her hair what isn
t the best sign^^ I had no problem with her in particular, but seeing so many great characters from Pixar before, she definitely lacks 2-3 layers to make her an rly interesting character. Same problem from beginning to end and beside that i don
t think i know much about her after watching the whole movie :)
Best character for me was the father, who was rly funny..also that one "special" son made me laugh.
Merida`s brothers were the most annoying characters for me to be honest but oh well, guess some kids might have enjoyed them non the less.So in conclusion it still should be mentioned under the "better animated movies out there", but the potential wasn`t reached even when we put aside the false hopes some had for this movie.
The animation alone should be worth to at least give it a second viewing in the future for me. -
arguing about female leads is what got me in trouble last time in this thread!!
God. I hate anyone that hyped the movie for that particular reason. A character is a freaking character. Putting too much emphasis into what traits makes an "amazing female character" just rubs me off as pandering and creepy.
okay so how come Pixar has one generic Disney Princess and Miyazaki has a dozen really interesting female leads?
because he actually creates female leads
i enjoy good films as much as the next person (lord only knows i do) but i do miss that connection i feel with strong female leads like Dana Scully or Cake and Fiona. it's not a crime to want leads that have the same life experience you do.
-
@Don:

The animation alone should be worth to at least give it a second viewing in the future for me.I don't buy that. I think there have been tons of much better animated films within the last 4 or 5 years. I think Pixar dropped the ball in many ways and just didn't make a compelling movie for a lot of people.
-
On the one hand, Disney has been making films with female leads for eight decades now and it took them until the '80s to really start coming up with female leads that actually have distinct personalities and even those tended to have storylines revolving around marriage one way or the other. So Pixar is ahead of the curve on that note.
On the other hand, Pixar has existed entirely within that last timeframe and really shouldn't have a problem creating female leads since Disney and Miyazaki have already shown how to do it.
-
arguing about female leads is what got me in trouble last time in this thread!!
okay so how come Pixar has one generic Disney Princess and Miyazaki has a dozen really interesting female leads?
Because Brave was the first? And not among dozens of them that were made over the span of many years? If Pixar breaks its current trend and makes more female characters in thier movies, then I don't think it would matter much at all if one or two of them happen to be princesses in different kinds of stories.
I mean, I personally feel it's somewhat silly and selfish to put so much pressure of Pixar's first attempt. An attempt that I personally never saw as bad. It was surely standard, but really. Pixar's first female lead could have been thousands of other possible leads. Maybe I'm too optimistic here. Some of ya'll are acting like this is the last time we'll see a girl lead, and seeing this as a missed opportunity(amoung thousands, like I said). Me? I don't really see, or care for that.

can we just move on please

Kay. I kind of wanted to stop after Mono's leg humping anyway.

Have they even provided a release date for King of the Elves yet?

They do a deluxe Ferngully version ^^
-
-
There's also the umbrella thing that's going to be the "photorealistic" short in front of Monsters Inc.

First thought:
They don't look like characters who would spout fart/burp/poop jokes. Not original, but serviceable to me.
Color me hopeful. -
Is King of Elves 2D or CGI?
-
Have they even provided a release date for King of the Elves yet?
…obviously that didn't happen.
Is King of Elves 2D or CGI?
3D is what it was originally announced as.
Given that Snow Queen was going to be 2D, then switched to 3D… it'll probably be a long time before we get another 2D film... since P&tF didn't do so well, and no one even knew Pooh had a new movie.
The Paperman short gives me hope of hybrids though.
-
Someone, for some reason… using stop motion and marionette technology, did a live action shot-for-shot remake of Toy Story.
All of it.
And yes, that includes the car chase at the end.
Crazy.
-
Wow someone had A LOT of time on their hands, but my god it's awesome. I wonder how many takes it took to get the props falling the right direction. I'm sure it was a pain in the ass to film. Regardless, the creativity and the cheap special effects are awesome. Reminds me of the good ol' days when CG wasn't the cop out solution for special effects: just strings, blue screen, stop motion, models, and a few other classic tricks.
-
Oh geez. There's even a blooper reel.
-
Will start a fandom that will re-shoot each Pixar movie in live action form…ohhh yeah.

Imagine trying to do Bug's Life and Finding Nemo with actual bugs and fishes.

I hate these kind of comments. People can use their time as much as they want, though you wouldnt prioritize your time for this kind of thing, dont be envying others.

Surprised this hadn't been posted yet:
-
…The more I see, the less I get how this warrants its own movie.
I know we're missing some big chunks of the story propably (that flying things role, for instance), but whats there just seems...anemic.
-
It doesn't really show much of the plot, other than "Mike and Sully are rivals." I'm sure there's more to it. Something that turns them from rivals into best friends.
But I just love the dynamic between the two anyway, so I'm all set.
-
@The:

Pixar usually refrains from putting footage into their trailers from past the opening 20 minutes, (exception of Up where they showed nothing of the first twenty minutes) and their earliest trailers are completely made up new footage that appears nowhere in the movie. They're really conscious about not spoiling much of anything about the twists, turns, and actual plot of their movies.
We haven't seen anything yet.
-
Yeaaaah if Brave is a testament to anything, one shouldn't make any quality based judgments on the movie based on strictly the trailer. Hahah…yeah, learned that the hard way about Brave.
I'm pretty sure they're pulling a "Wreck-It-Ralph" with this trailer as in revealing the overall premise, but concealing the major conflict within it.
