So nobody in an English speaking country then?
-
I finished Zelda, I'll ignore nintendo for the rest of the year then. Good luck. See ya on E3.

I feel genuinely bad about it, but me too. If Nintendo can't provide entertainment, there's plenty of it elsewhere (retro games, Game of Thrones/Samurai Jack/Invader Zim/MST3K/Rick and Morty coming back, etc…).
Time to hit the backlog.
-
Um, do you guys mean the rest of the fiscal year? Because E3 is in just a bit over a month.
For my part I know Splatoon 2 should deliver, Mario game looks interesting, and we'll see if they have anything else cooked up to reveal in June.
-
SNES Mini coming this year's christmas.

If true, that explains the mystery. "Guys we have to discontinue the NES Mini or nobody will buy the SNES Mini!!!!!"
Wonder if they'll learn from the hardware shortcomings of the last one (like giving it a usable controller). And oh what I'd give to be a fly on the wall at the meeting where they decide the game selection. "We've got to give them SOME good games, but not too many. Otherwise nobody will buy them on VC for $10 each."
-
Hopefully it'll have Act Raiser and/or Top Gear.
-
Personally I feel like if anything can make this type of glorified emulator even close to worthwhile, it's a focus on multiplayer games, where you can sit on the couch and play with people as opposed to the general hassle of doing that on your computer.
-
SNES mini? Sounds cool, I can't wait to go and buy ahhahahahahahahahahasahahahahahahaha

Well we know they'll have the essentials such as Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, Yoshi's Island, Link To The Past, F-Zero, The DKC Trilogy, Kirby, Super Contra 3, Suoer Castlevania 4, Breath Of Fire 2, All three versions of Street Fighter 2
And then Earthbound.
All the while people go for the pitchforks and torches because stuff like Turtles In Time is missing.
-
Well we know they'll have the essentials such as Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, Yoshi's Island (Depending on hardware), Link To The Past, F-Zero, DKC1 (Maybe 2…NOT 3), Kirby Super Star (and probably not Dreamland 3 due to hardware), Super Contra 3, Suoer Castlevania 4, Breath Of Fi....(Capcom: NOPE! Have Ghosts and Goblins instead or something), All three versions of Street Fighter 2
Fixed
As..it is questionable whether they will try to accomodate games with those goofy chips like Star Fox which is still up in the air as well as Super Mario RPG which in itself is questionable for the following reason among others. All the while people go for the pitchforks and torches because stuff like Earthbound is missing.
And fixed again.Though pitchforkes and torches is an understatement here but still…

That's exactly what an Everdrive is for, though. The NES and SNES mini are for people who want that original hardware feel but are too cheap to actually invest the time/energy/moderate level of cash that getting an original console with spare controller(s) working on a CRT requires.

Not really. There's a difference between emulating games and actually paying for illegal hardware to enable that emulation in a particular way. You could just as easily build a cheap, compact media PC to hook up to your TV as well. The point would be for something cheap and convenient that's ALSO official. But it's just a bad ripoff in its current form with no real advantage over ANY other form of emulation.
But yes LMFAO at the idea of wanting to rig an entire setup just for original hardware AND paying for a flashcart.

Why does that matter? Most of the people who originally worked on those games aren't getting paid a dime for the NES or SNES classic editions.

Oh Earthbound will be on there….it's Mother 3 still being in the wind that gives people "certain" feelings.

You really don't see the value in Nintendo selling an official product that they have every right to sell? You really don't see why some people might like to support the official product or just own an official product in general?
-

I get that it's a cool-looking piece of plastic with some neat functionality, but I don't see any moral advantage to buying an NES classic (which you're now going to have to get from a scalper, ensuring that Nintendo gets none of the money anyway) over emulating decades old games for free.
These cultural artifacts are important pieces of our history, and would be shared freely if we'd kept copyright law as it was originally intended.
-
Yeah, and in 1790 Women couldn't vote. Also, Slavery was still a thing. Laws change, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse but always for a reason.
Also, we're talking about an SNES-Mini at this point.
The SNES was released in 1992 in America (can't apply an American law to Japan)
That means the SNES is 25 years old.
According to the link that you shared, Copyright was originally "for a term of 14 years, with the right to renew for one additional 14-year term should the copyright holder still be alive."
Nintendo definitely would have renewed.
So even by Slavery-day standards, Nintendo would still own the copyright on this system and its games and be perfectly within their rights here.
-
It's not about morals, though, Robo.
Some people don't know enough about alternatives to trust them, so they default to buying official products. Some people don't even know there are alternatives and only trust their brand name recognition. Some people just find stock in buying 'canon' things, and the fact that it's an official Nintendo product by itself adds value.
I agree with the mentality of emulating everything, especially to spit in Nintendo's face for their shitty practices regarding their IPs, but you can't ignore the large audience that exists that wants the official products that Nintendo is screwing over.
-
If people want to buy hardware that Nintendo make, that's on them and Nintendo has every right to sell it.
When it comes to paying for old software titles, I agree that for the most part they should be freely accessible to the public, especially older titles that you can now run anywhere and most people have bought them somewhere already. Perhaps small fees for titles that require update of licenses and w.e.
That said, regarding the historical concern, most of these successful games likely to be in a SNES classic and the like are probably already easy to archive and store, both in physical format and in digital formats that allow for preservation.
The historical concern is more for games limited to rare hardware, games with limited releases and availability, and things that we don't see due to localization issues or development hell/cancellation. -
I still can't believe my comment about how the SNES Mini could possibly be given some utility (make it multiplayer-centric) turned into a discussion about the morality of piracy or Nintendo's rights to sell their own IPs.
-
Well, you did mention the word emulator…
-
Yeah but I was talking about what could make the official product more convenient or useful than emulation. Not morally superior.
-

It's not what you said, it's Robo seeming to be utterly perplexed that anybody might actually want to buy an SNES Mini when emulation exists lol.
-

I'm not sure how 'it's a cool thing and I can understand why people would want it' came across that way. I was talking about the morality of emulation and Nintendo's rereleases not properly compensating the people who made the game, not bashing people who wanted to buy it because it was cool.
RoboBlue: @DemonRin I'm not against Nintendo re-releasing their stuff and people buying it RoboBlue: they make cool stuff
RoboBlue: I just don't like the idea of measuring how good of a person someone is by how much stuff they buy__When you said people want to support the official product, I assumed you meant for moral reasons and not purely because they wanted the item. I'm also really bitter that the SNES classic will now be much harder to get than the NES classic was, since I really want some of those controllers. :(
-
I hope they have special weapons! :O
Using Simon's whip to knock bombs away would be awesome. -
For anyone who still wants one, Best Buy will have the last NES classics in stores tomorrow and Switches on Friday. Of course, you could always keep this guy's advice in mind:
-
Damn. I'm actually going to make an attempt for them.
-
I'll try for some of those neat controllers.
-
I'll try for some of those neat controllers.
I've mostly given up on getting the official one. The Insignia brand works quite well, with an extra 4 inches in the cable. And since the innards are the exact shape of the original controllers, it gave me a chance to do a little modification:
!

Apparently I got pretty uncharacteristically lucky with my Best Buy compared to other stories I'm hearing since I got home. I stopped by yesterday and was told they'd be handing out reservation tickets to people in line at around 8:30 this morning. I got there around 7:45, was only the third person in line, and was able to go kill time elsewhere and just waltz back into the store when it opened at 10 to pick up my reserved unit.
I'm honestly surprised that it went so well and that my usually dirt-broke self was able to snatch one up during this last chance.

AWESOME!
I wasn't able to get there in time, but hopefully the scalpers didn't get too many.

Not familiar with it but it's pretty cool

If this works as advertised, and Nintendo doesn't do anything to gimp it, then the Switch may have just become best console in one fell swoop.

It's also coming to Xbox One. This part is interesting:
"Rainway's signature feature is that it's available on any device with a web browser. You'll simply visit play.rainway.io, log in, and kick back with your favorite games.
Could the Switch be getting a browser?
-
yeah, but the Switch is portable. If I'm at home, I'll just play PC games… on my PC... if the Switch can play any of my PC games anywhere I have internet? Hell yes.
-
Game streaming is an overall terrible experience. There's a reason it's not taking off in any capacity on PS4.
-

I'm pretty sure that's not how it works. You're going to be able to play some PC games supplied by the site, not any game streamed from your PC.
The Switch would become an emulation paradise overnight if that happened. -
It's not emulation though. It's what they call "remote play." Which is why it has so many performance issues. It's closer to a remote desktop client than an emulator. I mean I don't know if it will be a fixed library but from a technical perspective I wanted to clear that up.

What I meant was, you're not going to be able to run DOSbox or MAME on the switch, not that the switch is going to emulate a PC.

Gamestop has Switch in again (for now)

Just a heads up: a number of websites are inaccurately reporting that Best Buy will have more NES classics in tomorrow. They're citing the announcement from this past monday.
-
If you have Amazon Prime, the Switch is currently in stock.

Aaaaaand Nintendo decides to randomly announce yet another 3DS revision. Introducing the "New 2DS XL."

It looks soooo pretty.
But why does it exist? I'm confused.
