If they do make Blue-Rays, I hope they're region free. I only have my PS3 for BRs and I don't think it can play all regions.
Funimation dvd discussion II ( UPDATED 8/4/12, FIRST POST FOR F.A.Q)

Quite noticeable, though it does depend on the size of your telly. Just download both versions of yibis's fansubs (400p & 720p) for a quick & dirty comparison.
The difference should be even greater then that though, since presumably toei are making these with 1080p in mind. Not much of an av expert myself though.
Can't download in college. They aren't on youtube, by chance?
-
Type in High Definition on Wikipedia and there's a comparison pic with a dog in 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080p or something. That's a pretty good comparison

DBZK BRs are region-free, so if that's any indication…

Yeah, but that isn't animation. Thanks, but there's a big difference.
-

I don't have any One Piece comparisons, but I do have the Hellsing Blu-rays. I've been putting together some stuff on this subject for my Hellsing website, so I have some stuff handy. (Some shots from the users at the Forums I co-run too)
(Top Image is HD, Bottom is SD upsized to the same size, so that's what it looks like upscaled on an HD Display)
Rip Van Winkle 1
Rip Van Winkle 2
Rip Van Winkle 3(this one has the Blu-ray Image on the bottom)
The Wild Geese
(this is a good one for comparison's sake, look at how Blurry the faces are on the top, SD image. They're much clearer on the bottom)(Yes, it's not One Piece, but it's all I have on me and illustrates the point I think)
-
Thanks for the pictures, Demon.
I don't think I will be purchasing the Blu-Rays. I will only purchase the DVDs if they are under $15 New on amazon. There was some difference in those images. I just want the episodes to support 16.9 with no black bars, cropping, or stretching. I will then be happy.
Thanks for the pictures though.

I'm… speechless as to just how much better these look compared to the original DVDs I have. I sincerely hope those are brought to the states...

Thanks, perfect.
Not sure I feel that that difference is worth an extra 10 bucks though. Maybe I'm just stingy.
EDIT: having now compared top to bottom in both zoom mode and normal mode, I've determined that DVDs are better for small tvs, and bluray for bigger.

Here's an OP comparison

http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/4066/78147266.jpgAnd bear in mind the final difference would be a bit bigger then this.
Edit - photobucket resized the HD one. Switched to imageshack.

Wow, bad comparison shots…
When you're comparing SD to HD, they kinda need to be presented at full size...
-
I know. PB screwed it up. Will redo.

We're comparing rips?
Let's try something that has a Blu-ray source. I have toms of screens from
Movie 8 and 10, lossless and from the disc. If anyone has the DVD for either… -

You post Screens, I'll rip the same screens from My DVD. -
Thanks for the comparisons, this should be interesting. The animation was a
little different in the movies, but it won't make that much difference in a comparison.
It will give us an idea of the difference in the anime if they choose to launch Bluray. -

Ok, made some Comparisons using J-Sack's Screens placed with DVD shots from my DVD. (J-Sack, if you're not cool with this, just say so and I'll remove them)
The DVD screens are all upscaled to the same size as the BD Screens. Basically, that is how they'll look on an HD Display. The best area to pay attention to for differences is the quality of the lines and the blurriness

Thanks Demon.
You could tell some difference on those images. I wish I had a 1080P monitor and all.
But that being a movie with even higher details than the anime, I think that the difference would be a little less than that. I am guessing. Really appreciate the images. -
pretty interesting stuff here, and it does help my decision if weather or not i want to get them in blu-ray, if the option is ever given to us

I'm glad I inspired this topic. Its much better than the argument before it. :]

Even on those still shots the quality difference is dramatic.
In motion it would be even more aparent. -
Austurlia fans, dvd set 6 is up for preorder.
http://www.madman.com.au/catalogue/view/14454/one-piece-uncut-collection-6-eps-6778
-
Oh nice to see the Australia fans are up to that set. By the chance are there anything different between these sets and the American ones?
-

There are a few differences to point out between the madman (AU ones) and the American sets.
-
The packaging in the Aussie ones come in a double disc plastic case (like the singles in America) instead of the cardboard packaging the voyages come in.
-
Changed the "Voyage" to "Collection" (As you can see in the madman listing :p)
-
The main menu differs a little from the American voyages
-
They don't keep the trailers from the American release on there, The Aussie release replaces them with their own trailers for different products they are selling
-
The cover layout is kept the same for both season 1 and 2 at the moment (As you can see by the picture on the madman site) and the back cover is a tad different aswell. And the disc labels are also different.
But other than that. it is pretty much the same as the American release.

Okay. I was wondering if there was any extras that you guys did or didn't get.

All that was kept the same with the extras was the textless songs.

Does AU have its own dub? I want to hear how terrible it is. lol
-
It's Funimation's dub…
-
@Joe:

It is the same awesome dub with the awesome voice actors that work on the Funimation dub.
-
-
So no commentaries?
Oh That's right, I forgot to mention, the collections do contain the commentaries.
-
Looks like the Amazon deals are gone now, so those who did not purchase them, you are out of luck now for awesome sells. But don't give the "it's too much money" excuse now.
-
I'm waiting to see if the right stuff daily deals hits season three.
-
Got the last three season 2 sets from Amazon. Hope season 2 goes on sale sooner or later.

Fixed it for you.

I'm getting S2V6-S3V3 for Christmas ^^ I'm kind of excited.
But, the Skypia arc is still the same dub as 200 err..7? Right? Is it very noticeable?

Some of the rougher stuff has been touched up, and 99% of the 4kids mandated names are gone, I think there was just one slip up.
So while it's weaker then the east blue and Baroque works dubbing, it is better then the 2007 version.
It's fine, basically. Plus of course, enel's VA still sounds as great as he did back then.

Did they go with Eneru or Enel? I forget.
-
I think someone mentioned that the word "gravity blue rider" slipped in somewhere.
I believe they went with Eneru.
Yes, Pagaya says "Gravity Blue Rider" once.
Every other time tho, it's "blue sea dweller" or Blue Sea People"
-
so im guessing funimation might get to the water 7 arc early to mid 2011?

IF they actually decide to actually pick up passed the episodes they originally ordered (through 205, presumably).

We're playing pessimist again?
-
Ah man, if Funi were to drop the series, it would literally be the end of the "It'll get as big as DBZ/ Naruto someday" dream some of us have.
._.
'Hope they keep going with it. Heck, with Dubbing Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, The DBZ movies, Dragon Box (I'm guessing that they redid the dubbing in that?) and now Kai, that's alot of material to dub (and redub,) so I don't think another long running series would be too hard to keep going…unless money was an issue I guess
.. .. ...
-
@Badass:
We're playing pessimist again?
More like realist.
There's really no point in finding out what FUNimation is dubbing right now. It's not going to come any quicker than it has been.
-
This post is deleted!
-
I have to be a bit pessimistic too… It is a bit strange that they haven't even announced that they're dubbing it when its only four months till the date it should be released. Unless it is just to torture us, of course.
Oh yes, that must be it.
-
If they aren't going to be dubbing it, why are they releasing Fourth and fifth Voyages three weeks apart?
