Still, Garp wanted Ace and Luffy to become upstanding marines. But that would face the same parentage problems so that might not have been an issue but perhaps Garp just left them with Dadan and the mountain bandits to toughen them up some more. In line with how he treated Luffy in the first place (throwing him in the forest and stuff).

Despite how they act towards each other I'm sure Garp and Sengoku are tight and being that he's the highest ranked marine period, I'm sure he'd make an exception. All Garp really had to do was raise them up right and bam, that would have been the end of that story.

luffy could have been an exeption for sengoku cause he`s rly related with garp but in the end i think garp decided that it would be better to leave luffy in a place nobody knows about and where he and ace could be togeather..i mean garp knew how hard it is for ace and so i think he just wanted that even ace could have a friend. -
This chapter got me thinking a bit. What relationship could Mayor Whoopslap possibly have to Dadan? There's got to be some reason for him to ask "Does Dadan know about this," as if Dadan actually cares, and Whoopslap knows about it.

This chapter got me thinking a bit. What relationship could Mayor Whoopslap possibly have to Dadan? There's got to be some reason for him to ask "Does Dadan know about this," as if Dadan actually cares, and Whoopslap knows about it.
I believe once the flashbacks are over, it will be shown that Dadan begins to actually view Ace and Luffy as her children and comes to care about them but may be one of those people who has a peculiar way of showing it..
Ace mentioned her right before he died, so he definitely has a high level of respect, although he may have not even realized it until he was about to die.

Ace've changed since his meeting with Luffy, probably because of Sabo's death. I don't see why wouldn't Dadan change during the past 10 years.

I can understand how some could be frustrated with the crew not being back together again.
However, people have to understand this is the only place where an Ace flashback would work. It would be odd to have an Ace and Luffy flashback long after Ace's death, it has to be done right now.
As far as this chapter, one thing that stood out was just how big of a punk Ace was when he first met Luffy.
Another thing that stands out, is even though Luffy gets put in extremely dangerous situations, he never mentions who his Grandfather is to get out of those situations.

I don't know if you are really disagreeing with my previous post there, but i most certainly disagree with yours. Luffy is the guy with the most potential and probably even the strongest in his crew even if Jinbei joins. After they both recovered i'd guess Jinbei won't go completely unscathed from Akainu's almost lethal hit, so i think he'd be past his prime from now on. How the others have improved till now is most uncertain, but Zoro will always be the first mate and he'll always find a way to be almost equal to Luffy's fighting powers… and Sanji won't let his rival just get ahead of him unanswered.
I just want Hancock to get pregnant so that she'd shut up and stay at Amazon Lily without dying from love sickness (No offenses meant dear ladies, this is just a plotdevice that has little to do with my real attitude towards women) and Margaret is still my favorite to join the crew anyway...

It seems he left Ace with bandits, because any ordinary citizen would have turned him in to the WG. Better for Garp to have leverage against bandits and secure the life of Ace and Luffy than have them be executed, I guess.

No. Ace died because he lost his temper when Akainu insulted WB when he should've just ran like the old guy said. If anything, Luffy will probably blame his own weakness for not being able to deal with Akainu. His carefree nature has nothing to do with Ace's death

I personally think that is the gist of it. Dadan owed Garp a favor and also, Garp probably knew that even though Dadan was a bandit, she probably wasn't someone who committed heinous crimes.
Also, another reason would be what alternative did Garp have? Even if Luffy's mother is alive, she probably wouldn't be strong enough to keep Luffy from being a Pirate.
Also, by having bandits raise his grandsons, maybe Garp wanted to show Luffy and Ace that being an outlaw wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Garp probably knew Dadan would be hard on both of them and maybe they wouldn't like it.
It would be very interesting to know just when did Sengoku know of Ace's existence and more importantly, when he found out that he was under Garp's protection.

He even wanted to kill Shirohige for unknown reasons but it's most likely because of the rivalry w/ Roger.

Oda-sensei is probably going to get more into that in future chapters, but my theory is that Ace sees it as, it's the only option for him. He's angry at the world, the marines would probably somehow find out who he is if he tries to join (and even if he didn't), the people who raised him hates him, so he probably thinks the only way to survive when he grows up is to become a pirate. There's probably more, but I'm gonna leave the rest to Oda-sensei.

i'm guessing Ace wanted to be pirate to do the typical thing you see where somenoe hates their father yet for some reason do the same profession as their dad but want to become better.
but if ace and luffy became marines I believe the wg would have allowed it. i mean woudlnt' it be good to announce that the former pirate kings son is a great marine? I would think tha twould be like a blow to pirate moral or something right? or at least make civilians think, even roger's own flesh and blood knew his dad was evil and pirates are bad, or something like that.
and luffy was a shoe in. even if the uppers knew of his dad, then same as above for ace, but then also can say we have Garp the Hero's grandson as a great marine as well.
hmm i wonder what one piece would be like if they were marines. it would be like watching smoker i bet. We would have slowly gained rank by taking out many of the same guys, then met blackbeard and gotten a whole "chase him for sure, he is final boss vibe" we would have gotten celebrated for our events and in newspapers as heroes though.

I don't understand why people want explanations for the least important details of the plot.
Why Ace wants to be a pirate? Maybe because he want to surpass his dad, or because he wants the freedom of the seas, where he can do as he will? Who cares!
That goes in the same cathegory as wanting to see Ace's funeral.
While some details would be cool to see, they're far from required reading. They are not essential do the plot.

He ALWAYS is hella cute, especially as a kid, but damn … this chapter really is something else.Garr, but now we've gotta wait way too long for the next chapter! Darn. I'm really interested in that whole Sabo&Ace story, I wonder if Sabo really did die as a kid ... I kinda doubt it. Don't know why, my guess is as good as yours, but I sort of think that he is still around. I don't believe he turned into a marine, I think he got into a fight with Ace, causing them to split up, but Sabo still became a pirate by himself.
