I'm apparently the only one that doesn't mind the slight downtoning of the completely over the top stuff Murai puts into his work.
Guts slices an attacking wolf in half, okay, got it. Don't really need to see the wolf's snout specifically cut off. That just makes me queesy.
Guts bashes a guy's face in with his giant sword, got it. Don't need to see the flying eyeballs and brain matter.
Griffith has been horribly tortured and messed up. Heavy shadows, super emaciated thinness, the locked on helmet and a missing tongue get that across just fine, I don't also need to see his exposed muscle tendons.
The king of Midland sees his daughter's virginal blood and decides to rape her and… wait, what?
So the horse has been possessed by a demon and is trying to rape Caska. Well, um... you know, I really don't need that imagry at all.
I'm fine with the franchise being bloody and violent and full of bare breasts, thats part of the world and part of the appeal and it sets the mood and tone, but sometimes less is more. A hint of something, someone just saying what they see, a silhouette or a far away shot can lend more to the imagination than a gore filled close up. Especially when the story, art and mood of Berserk are so high quality.
Muira's a fantastic storyteller, but he has some crazy excesses... at least partly because he's expected to I suppose.
