The Robin part really hit me. Good god. AND THEN THEY STARTED PLAYING BINKS.

and there are people calling this episode perfect? amazing…
My thoughts exactly Igalsfy.
It'd be alright if they re-animated them but that was just lazy. For some reason, and I don't know what it is so don't ask, I just didn't find the shots of the crew disappearing right … I thought it needed something, more punchy (maybe like an after image, Kuma's hand at the end of his swipe then the image disappears completely or something??).
On the plus side the voice acting was really quite special and even though they took some liberty's with the story it was "over all" a good episode, but by no means the best or perfect.
So more pro's than cons, but the cons are relativity large ones
Man if Tate had done this …..
word of advice captain, have tissues on the ready when watching.
I got through the final episode of Cowboy Bebop without crying. I'll be fine. ;)
Why so much complaining for the animation? Sure it isn't like G8 or anything, but come on…
I felt that the art picked up after Luffy went Gear Second. The animation team really went out of their way during the second half. That was about as fluid as you can get without Tate at the helm.
I mean, the art was no 312, 377, or even 192, but it was much, much better than I expected from Takagi, and while I would have appreciated if they had actually shown the Straw Hats vanishing instead of cutting to black, this episode was very intense and well directed.
I'd say it's perfect in terms of story, soundtrack and voice acting but not in animation. It could have been a lot better with animation, but it deserves a 10/10 just for the story, IMO.
Well they probably had to tone it down at least in terms of art because had this been done by Tate, we all would have fainted at our computers. But yeah, some awkward drawings were not enough to take away from the impact of this episode for me, and for me, art is usually a HUGE deal. That's how good it was.
I'm not the biggest fan of the specials but perfect way to leave the anime only people on a cliff hanger. The cannonical preview for an episode after that would have shit on the entire episode in my mind.

they can't waste that type of budget on small things when its a weekly series they have to keep animating. my god you people will bitch about anything.
Is this HD raw any good?
ONE PIECE 405 Raw (1280x720 x264 ac3 24fps).avi

To be fair joe I hardly ever bitch and moan about stuff and i've probably posted more posts in this one episode thread then all the others combined - but lets face it, budget or not this should have been a big episode, and since the art was not the best in the world, reanimating it shouldn't have cost too much to worry about because i'm sure "Lily" will have a few sub par episodes.
I understand that it's a weekly show and cutting corners saves time and money, but this episode is supposed to be a big deal.
(And i didnt even rise to an argument - not even mentioning the funi dvd thread … wow, you see 'internet' ?? arguments on you are like bountys in one piece ....)
Like I said I enjoyed the episode but some bits weren't top my tastes, I actually thought the art was horrible but i'm sure loads of people loved it, it's not a syle I like , to each thier own eh?
And as per my previous post, I gave it a 9/10 even though It had lots of bits I didn't like.
i'm going to leave it there - but thanks for the discussion, nice to hear others views on things.

I think the bitching about the flashbacks is valid; although it was extremely heartwrenching, it would be even nicer to see everything reanimated like in 312. That's really rare for a long running anime though.
Now..nitpick about Sentoumaru's mouth in an episode like this, that's just hilarious.
Oh my god…that episode had me in tears...:cwy: They did a really good job with it.
And the next oyabun episode looks like fun!
Wow seriously…I never came that close to crying in an anime. Like seriously...I dont think I've ever came that close to crying off anything. That damn violin, and the emotional flashbacks...ugh god...See? This is where One Piece rapes most other shonen. It's got so much emotion....
Umm, I didn't mind them not reanimating the flashbacks but why were the Brooke/Franky/Robin flashbacks (as well as the remade Ussop ones I think) in 4:3?
Wasn't there a 16:9 version of those scenes? Or did they think that it'll be better not to flip between aspect ratios every ten seconds?
The only thing in this episode that I didn't love completly was the one second where Robin was so thin it was freaky! The rest was pure gold, the raw emotion of Nami and Robin calling to Luffy before they vanished was brilliant. And Luffy banging his head on the floor was so emotional.
Im assuming they didn't keep flipping the ratio's of the flashbacks as that would have been rubbish and I'm assuming it would have cost to much to reanimate them (although that would have been awesome!)
Anyways, shall give the filler a miss as I never really like these 'specials', but am still glad they're not jumping straight into Amazon Lily
This next filler looks like it either be really good, or utter trash. I'm hoping for the former.
This has been a great week for One Piece, an awesome chapter (although technically in some places that was last week) and an awesome episode. Both were really amazing, the anime especially compared to last weeks. The only part I didn't like was when Sentomaru was explaining Kuma's ability and Luffy was frozen for like 30 seconds with his mouth hanging open.
OMG this episode was so sad :( I remember reading the chapter and getting all worked up, but it's different to see it in moving pictures and hear the voices in my opinion. My favorite parts include: Just before Usopp was sent away, Nami and Robin calling out to Luffy, Luffy first starting to cry right before Robin was sent away, and Luffy banging his head on the ground and just laying there to cry and remember his friends. This probably would've made be start bawling if I hadn't already known what was going to happen.
I loved the animation for this as well. It's probably one of the best episodes made so far. Out of 5 stars I give it a 6 :)
Heartbreaking
I Don't Care The Animation I Don`t Care Anything This Episode Make Me Cry Like A Girl I Can't Beleive What I Saw
It Was Perfect And Heartbreaking CLAP CLAP TOEI ANIMATION
I know a lot of people are complaining about the flashbacks near the end of the episode, not only on this board but every where else it seems. Maybe I'm just crazy, but this is the only episode where I actually enjoyed watching the flashbacks. It just fits in my opinion. It could have been much worse. Water Seven arc rings a bell to anyone?
Also someone mentioned that this episode was just as tragic as the "death of Going Merry" ep. I'm sorry, but no matter how hard the writers tried, I could care less about that darn ship. In fact I was over joyed when they finally burned it. When comes to the most depressing episode, was the fight between Luffy and Usopp. It killed me to see two of my favorite characters fight. And for what? Going Merry? Damn that ship and it's sentimental values!
Agreed. I liked the flashbacks and thought it was a nice touch that they had Bink's Sake playing in the background.
Scarz, your avatar looks like Luffy is riding a giant penis…

I know but it's actually a baguette. Seriously.
I enjoyed the episode a lot. The animation was pretty good, it definitely had its really good moments and its bad moments. But the episode was done rather well. Some of my only small gripes with it are what some have already stated. I personally didn't like the whole "go to black" as soon as someone was hit by Kuma. Idk, I would've prefered it to have been done like how it was done with Zoro. Everything else was really solid. Though this episode didn't make me tear up (like Luffy vs. Usopp or Merry's Funeral), it did make me sympathize greatly with Luffy, especially with Bink's Sake playing. I look forward to the filler episode because we get some Thriller Bark characters this time! X3
Saw the episode and i felt that the part where Kuma repelled Luffy and Sanji's attack could be improved.Especially when he repelled Sanji's attack.
binks sake is always the killer
Well when i originally read the chapter when Kuma sends everyone away, I was completely shocked. In fact, i had to reread the chapter just to make sure i caught everything that happened. My reaction was surprised and shocked.
However, after watching 405, i got an entirely different reaction. Maybe it was because i knew what was going to happen. But During that whole flashback sequence, i actually began to tear up. The whole episode was beautifully done, with the music, to the animation, to the voice's delivery.
What i realized though is that the pacing of the episode in comparison to the chapter gave me a completely different reaction. The chapter, being fast and rapid, made me surprised and shocked at how quickly and easily the strawhats were defeated. I was under the impression that Luffy or anybody didn't have Time to save anyone because Kuma was so fast.
In the episode, I was sad and emotional. Luffy was much more desperate and in the end hopeless. It was a completely different feeling watching each individual member get defeated with the distressed look on their face. And then the flashback sequence was just amazing and finished off beautifully.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else felt the same way?

I feel EXACTLY the same way
amazing episode. i am speechless…
:cwy:
Wow, what an episode. I had got spoiled what was going to happen beforehand, which is sad… But I had it coming, I guess.
Poor Luffy. I liked the way they handled his reactions to this. It really made me connect with him losing all of his nakama and not being able to do a thing. All of the hopelessness, a new level of hopelessness that has never been touched upon in One Piece before. Something that Luffy surely isn't used to.
The facial expressions and voice acting was all done really well, too. Just incredibly depressing and hopeless altogether. Even though I know this isn't the end, it still feels really hopeless. It would have been so much neater if I didn't know that the series actually went on after this, though! But that's the price I pay for staying with the anime and not reading the manga.
I can't wait for the next canon episodes!
It was a really good episode that was executed very good. Very emotional and sad. The nami part was the part the got to me the most followed by the nico part. That nami scene almost had me tearing up like a little girl.
Well I finally got to watch the episode! Gotta say, I was disappointed. Maybe I just expected too much, but it just wasn't hitting me as much as the series' big cramatic moments have in the past. The big Binks Sake flashback felt way too easy and cheap, and this episode seemed to have a fetish for cutaways. It's like the director couldn't bare to see the moment where Kuma UPS'd half the Straw Hats. Though I like the moment where Robin was Pimp Slapped, Franky and Nami's slaps seemed ruined by the unseen nature of it, and those damn repeated cutaways to the bubbles. Worst part is that Nami's Pimp Slap was originally one of my favorites. That moment really could've been better if the camera had been kept on Nami, much like it was in the manga. Having her call out for Luffy to help her, only to have her immediately vanish as Kuma descends on her… That would've been sweet. But no, we had to have those damn "dramatic" cutaways to the bubbles popping...
In fact, I think Oda "directed" this episode way better than the anime director did. The way he displayed the action on the panels did a much better job. Maybe this episode was just too overhyped... Maybe I got my expectations too high... All in all, sadly, I was disappointed. I wanted to feel those goosebumps I've gotten before at the sad stuff, but it just wasn't there. I was more moved by the Brook flashback than this, and I hoped I wouldn't say that...
If there was a light at the end of this tunnel, it's that Bartholomew Kuma was as retardely badass as he's always been. Love that guy…! Speaking of which, one of the biggest disappointments about this episode was how Kuma's reflections were depicted. The anime needs to stop doing daramatic time slows every time Kuma blocks something. We can get a much better impression of just how perfectly those pads reflect things if you stop pausing and cutting when they hit the pads. The manga really gave the impression of how he perfectly deflects Sanji and Luffy's attacks, and how they retain their momentum (which goes toward hurting them like it does). The anime, not so much. Sanji's reflected kick looked kinda crappy, and Luffy's reflected attack was a let-down as well.
Next time Kuma blocks an attack in the anime, I don't want a camera cut, or time to stop. I wanna see the reflected attack(er) ricochet perfectly like they're supposed to, so we can get that visceral feel for Kuma's power to reflect. These cheesy time stops and crap are kinda ruining the feel of that.
Personal I thought a really ecellent touch was the eyecatches were silent going into and coming back from the commercial break, instead of the usual musical cue. that really added to the mood and tone that something ominous and beyond the usual was up.
And Luffy grieving and smacking his head into the ground, over and over, hit way harder than in the manga. just… damn. that was somethin.
The episode would have been better without the cheesy symbolism with the bubbles.

I agree with this, this made way more of an impact for me too!
The episode would have been better without the cheesy symbolism with the bubbles.
The symbolism itself wasn't that much of a problem for me, it was when they'd decide to cut to them. It's like they were over-excited about it. Like they loved the idea and thought it was super-profound, so they were excited and over-anxious to use it.

Totally agree with this. Pissed me off. If it weren't for that, I would have enjoyed the episode more than the manga.
Oh! I forgot to mention that I was pretty pissed when we didn't get that awesome "Kuma looming over Luffy just before Pimp Slapping him" shot… That image was awesome in the manga, why did they ditch it?!
Edit: Epic Fail is Epic
Nevermind
@__Jadosra__
lol that's Usopp Sanji and Brook. The one in front of kuma is usopp. Look at the bag.
OMG, It was so great, sad but great! Just can't wait to see what happens next.
BTW, I loved luffy's voice in this episode. It was I don't know I can't even find the word. I mean she can't help it since she's an actress!
Now that I've finally seen it subbed and with decent quality I take everything back I've said about being medicore. This episode just plain sucked.
I wouldn't say it sucked, but it certainly didn't do the original chapter justice.
Eh, my only gripe was was how they kept refusing to show the Straw Hats actually vanishing and cutting to black. The bubbles, fine, but the urgency to jump to them at the cost of the disappearances wasn't so hot.
Other than that, I thought the episode did a decent job. If it had followed the manga panel by panel, it would have been over after seven minutes.
I just find that the chose BGM totally didn't do the animation justice. The only part that actually created a tense feeling was when Kuma took care of PX-1. Everything else was rather a poor choice of BGM or it sucked because there wasn't any BGM's at all (like Kizaru fighting Rayleigh). For instance just try running the part right after the Binks Sake thing with running this theme and you should get what I mean.
Btw, I am aware that this isn't a OP theme. I'm mainly trying to show how different a scene can be with another BGM choice. Somebody who does that for a living should have no problems chosing something better then me.
Well the major issue is that this episode was overhyped. I personally enjoyed the episode very much, and I think the bubbles thing was a very nice touch. Now, that doesn't mean they didn't overuse it, but it was a good choice. The flashback itself was great, but I think Binks Sake was a poor BGM to get the mood across…
Anyway, the episode was great for me. That's the point I was making here. The manga felt alot more epic the first time I read it though, admittedly. But that's usually the case.
Yeah, I thought Bink's Sake was an odd choice for the cheap memory flashback… I think the use of it would've been a bit more impactful if I wasn't so sick of hearing it after Thriller Bark...
I pretty much loved everything about the episode. Nothing to gripe about from me. Probably one of the most heart wrenching episodes of One Piece.
Cutting to the bubbles did bother me a little but i got used to it halfway through the ep. Plus the animation and scenes were top notch and the coloring of Shabody during a sunset was beautiful.
